The Best Darn Book on DSL you'll ever read.

The authors have a done a nice job of presenting the case for DSL. I live in an area where the RBOCS have bruised out the CLECS with flying elbow tactics. Armed with this book, I will now call up those bastards and demand that they install DSL in my neighborhood. Will you have a Chinese version coming out? Best consumed with prodigious amounts of durian...

This is a very wordy book which dwells more on history than necessary. The technichal information presented is poorly written and lacks depth.
The best part of this book is I bought it used ..., so I didn't loose as much as I could have.

Not for engineers

This book is not good for technical people (they should read Thomas Starr "Understanding Digital Subscriber Line Technology" as the best technical reference book), but this may be a good one for marketing and management people, and for general reading.

This book takes you from ground zero to explain how the many protocols and technologies work. There are plenty of diagrams with extensive explanations on each variant with their advantages and disadvantages.
Much of the information in this book is how the basic telephone system is structures and can apply to many areas besides DSL.

There is way too much detail to scratch the surface with this review so I will just cover some of the highlights.

He covers the emergence of the internet and web sites with information about ISP's. From there the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is covered well enough to actually use. Loops and Trunks are covered. This is the mystery boxes in the phone room at work. The differences between analog and digital trunks are described. ISDN and DAML are covered along with the "Law of Large Numbers". Alright now he moves in to the world of Circuit use and Packet Switching. MODEMs yep all kinds 56K, Cable, MMDS, KMDS, and Satellite Systems. DSL's and T1's and so on and so on.

This book is packed with diagrams and statistics. Want to delve deeper then
Appendix A Case studies
Appendix B Sources of Standards and Specification Information

Don't ask me how all this can be packed in one book but it is and I use most of this technologies at work and could not fins any slipups.

This book is more of a general introductory Telecom book to different access solutions, and does so in a hasty manner and in a not so well organized manner.

The book lacks smooth transition from introductory to DSL topics, and lacks focus.

Best so far

Reading from the point of view of an implementer of operation support systems for telcos, I found this book to be the best on DSL technology that I have come across.

not enough books avilable about DSL, but it is the best.

Wellm I bought Three books about DSL , this one was the best of them all. the other books I bought was " Understanding the Digital Subscriber Line" and " ADSL/VDSL Technologies" both books all the time talks about Technical Data and specifications, have lots of sophisticated equations. I am not saying that they are bad, but the xDSL architecture is the best choice for me, but still if you need very deep information you gotta have one of ther two books. in my case I returned the Book "Understanding ... " to Amazon and I kept the other two books.

This book is a waste of money. Lots of errors(typos, wrong labels on diagrams and figures, etc.). I didn't expect this book to go into the mathematical and technical issues in detail, but even the highly simplified and glossed-over discussions that are in the book is a jumble of confusion. This book _might_ be useful to someone who is only interested in knowing the buzzwords and jargons of DSL, but it is of no use to anyone who actually wants to learn the guts of the technology.

If you want a good intro to DSL, go to Virata's site and download the file "Personal Broadband Services: DSL and ATM". This gives a much, much better written overview to DSL, and it's free. No, I don't work for Virata; I found this after I got fed up with this book and did some research on-line.

The best book I have ever had regarding xDSL network access systems. The architectural designs and practical considerations are explained in a perfect manner. It is a must for your library if you are somehow related to xDSl and Internet engineering.

I bought this book with great expectations. It covered all relevant subjects related to DSL. Even the first chapter summarizing POTs cable plant was encouraging. But, the book is horrible. Things are just thrown together without explaining clearly any of the subjects. Despite all the bad reviews you might be tempted to buy this book because there is not another book that covers all the DSL related material included in this book. Don't!
There are many good books on communication theory that cover equalization, echo cancellation, adaptive filtering, error correcting codes, noise, etc. It might be necessary to read some of these general books + a simple book on DSL to cover the same material as this book does.

A good reference book if you are a xDSL design engineer

It's a good reference book, but it could be made better if organized well. A lot of info are included, and it will be perfect if it can explain better. However, so far I consider this book the best one among all the books on xDSL technology.

A must-have for communication engineers

Overall the book is well-written and concise. The author is very adept at introducing new topics in a clear and efficient manner. The book is the best single source I found for professionals who quickly want to come up to speed on DSL technologies.

Careless exposition

Review Date: 2000-07-31
This book initially presented itself as providing a thorough technical background on issues pertaining to the analysis and design of xDSL related technologies. I am afraid to say that it has not lived up to my expectations. This text, for a technical exposition, is very poorly written, incorrect derivations and equations abound, incomplete or absent explanations for derivations seem to be the norm. The authour makes conclusions without justification and leaves it up to the reader to 'guess' for him or herself. Typographical errors are the bane of any technical book and make reading it difficult and frustrating at the best of times. This book has much potential and I sincerely hope that any subsequent editions will overcome its current shortcomings.

Very poor content.

It did not live up to my expectations The first half of the book covers basic communication theory information such as channel equalization, coding, error corection and etc. These topics are also covered so basically that it does not add anything to the reader's knowledge. The second section of the book, DSL section, does not contain any network level DSL access systems architecture design and system management techniques. Therefore, I could not find valuable, practical information for the traffic engineers and network designers in this book.
