I am a visual learner: I can watch someone else operate, say, Final Cut Pro and get the general grasp of the work environment.
If I have to wade through text, it doesn't seem to click as easily.
Having read several books on Pro Tools as well as countless instructional web pages, I was still struggling with my Pro Tools LE system.
That's where Gina Fant-Saezs' book comes into play.
I took a chance and spent the money.
And it was money well spent, for someone with my learning curve.
Easy to use, fun to read and plenty of visuals.
Where other books explained Pro Tools in word, Gina's book augmented the text with excellent images.
I highly recommend "Pro Tools for Musicians and Songwriters" for beginners as well as those who need something more than just words on pages.

Excellent way to get started in Pro Tools!Review Date: 2008-05-26
The author is really good at making complex concepts and procedures understandable. She even uses a blog where she will personally answer your questions if you get stuck.
That said...
The book is using Pro Tools version 7, and because I was using Pro Tools LE 7.4, there were quite a few discrepancies between what was presented in the book, and what I had in front of me, and the reader is required to extrapolate from time to time. All this will probably be fixed if the author ever revises the book. Then she can specify exactly what version is being used.
Also, in the revision, I hope she uses XPand, the free (and extremely cool) sampler from Digidesign, and not the $600 SampleTank, which you can only try for 10 days before buying.
Another thing I think would be very beneficial to new users and should thus be included in the possible revision. is a whole section of the book on creating your own loops, right from the beginning.
Thanx Gina

But I'll never have to admit that again. This book is great for those of us who are "absolute beginners". I think it may even prove helpful to people who have a good understanding of the function of iPods but get really messed up in the organization of their iTunes libraries.
The book is broken down into three sections; iPods, iTunes, and iTunes store. The author covers each section thoroughly and yet keeps it light and entertaining.
The book has really helped to get me started with a good basic, maybe even advanced?, understanding of all things iPod.

It is an indispensible asset for any musicologist, music student, music teacher, music lover...heck, Wagner Lover!
This forms an extremely vital part of my Wagner discography, it's an important reference I always have on hand when wanting to study the epic Ring Cycle.
Thanks for choosing the Solti version and I guess those of us that were impressed by this are looking forward to further Wagner/Solti CD-ROM's hopefully dedicated to keeping Solti's Wagner legacy alive!

Toy Portfolio takes you where you need to goReview Date: 2003-09-05
My children are partial to Groovy Girls and all their accessories. I have seen the Oppenheims on NBC many times and know this is one of their favorites.
I usually find myself baffled when it comes to particularly young children under the age of 2. I refer to this book for great ideas.
Congratulations to the Oppenheims for another wonderful book.
Perfect Baby Shower/New Baby GiftReview Date: 2004-10-05
I have two kids, age 11 and 7, and I know what they like. The problem is I tend to buy the same type of toys over and over for them. The beauty of this guide is that it introduces you to types of products and brands that you may not have considered before. I find it's lack of gender-stereotyping also refreshing. It is invaulable for holidays and birthdays, and I find myself referencing it constantly.
I understand that this is the one and ONLY guide that does not accept any form of payment for review of products. Therefore, I can unequivocally trust the reviews to be impartial. Each product is not just reviewed by adults imposing their values on it, but by kids of the targeted age group. This makes me confident that the products aren't just "good for my kid," but actually will be enjoyed by them.
Wish I could give more than 5 stars....Review Date: 2003-09-27
And then, I started using the Portfolio!!! I know, this sounds like a bad infomercial, but I'm being honest, I promise. So far, it's been ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS - no kidding. I've given my nephews (ranging from newborn to 10 years old) several gifts, books, and videos, all of which have been perfectly age-appropriate, well-recieved, and played with for long periods of time. It's easy to follow, has great hands-on tips, and is cross-referenced for easily finding ideas and tips.
The best part, however, is that not only does it cover toys, books, and games... but it also explains developmental stages, provides tips for making up your own games, and creative inspiration for thinking outside the toy-box! I cannot recommend this highly enough for parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents, or anyone who needs to buy gifts (or anything else) for kids! This is one review book that is WORTH THE PRICE, every time.

Inspiring, challenging and rewardingReview Date: 2004-03-04
The transcriptions, as you might expect, are from a particular recording - 2 performances of the same jazz piece by the same artist will usually sound different... And indeed I have a few CDs in which some of the pieces from the book are performed with different improvisations and in different rhythm. But I did get some of the recordings the book refers to, and indeed the transcriptions are accurate. Note-for-note, as declared in the book. At least for the right hand...
In any case, most of the pieces as they are in the book sound great and cool (if you manage to play them!). Great moves, passages and improvisation techniques that give you a good taste of the musical world of one of the best jazz pianist ever.
I found myself using the passages and the ideas from the book in other jazz pieces, such as those from the Real Books. So performing the pieces as they are isn't the only reward you'll get - it will also improve your improvisation capability and technique in general.
I recommend studying at least a basic jazz theory before trying play from this book, so that you can understand the scales used for improvisations, the progressions and the left hand work done in the book. Besides, some of the pieces don't contain a left hand transcription. But since the technique for the left hand used by Peterson and in the book (tensions and voice spreading, for example) is covered by most theory books, you can easily figure it out by yourself.
There are no transcriptions for the bass line. But chords are written all the way (not all are 100% accurate actually), which makes it easy to play with a bass/guitar player.
As to the required level of playing - all the pieces in the book are hard to very hard to perform. Oscar Peterson was a great virtuous. You'd better work on your technique if you'd like to master them! Those who come from a classical music background will probably find it easier to read and play such scores.
There are no fingering specified, so it might be better for you to write down the fingering for the hard passages and such.
The accompanying CD is pretty helpful. It contains the piano parts performed exactly as they are written in the book, in the left channel (not performed by Peterson, of course. And played in MIDI I believe. Still, pretty nice), and bass and drum lines for some of the pieces in the right channel - useful if you'd like to play along with the bass/drums.
To conclude, I highly recommend this book for any jazz pianist (with a good enough technique!) or a classical pianist who wishes to try a good jazz

A good guide, but for an older versionReview Date: 2008-04-28
I was, however, disappointed that this book was specifically written for Sibelius 4.0. Not that the info contained is that out-of-date or inaccurate, but there are so many new features now in the current Version 5 that it makes this book incomplete for new Sibelius users just jumping in on Version 5 like I did. I did not see anywhere in the Product Description that told me I was buying an outdated manual. The book still is helpful, but I wish I could have waited for a version 5 guide to come along. (I heard one is "in the works" somewhere by a different author.)

Let's hope the Audigy version come out soon!Review Date: 2003-05-18
The book is by as far I have seen, the best reading material for the uninitiated in exploiting the use of sound cards. It also serves as a good external reference for developers as well, as there seems to be a lack of them in this area.
Like Strict Evaluation pointed out, the book is "encyclopaedic". A topic such as EAX itself is worth writing the whole book about. The authors deserves credit for covering so much breadth and depth.
I look forward to coverage of these topics, if there's an upcoming Audigy version:
- Code samples for using EAX
- Prodikeys (that'll definitely be interesting)

As far as a response to the previous "click track" comment, with respect. I have talked to several studio musicians, and they all say they record with a click track, drummer, pianist, and guitarist.
If Gina comes out with an "advanced" ProTools guide, I will purchase it immediately!
