One book for all your high tech etiquette needs!Review Date: 2002-10-17
A book like this was needed for a long time now. I really enjoyed how it was written to include both a personal touch of narratives and professional steps to achieve proper `netiquette'. Easy reading makes for a wonderfully crafted work.
If you use e-mails, faxes, voice mails, cell phones, etc. in your everyday life (work and home), this book will have you communicating like you were trained at Windsor Castle.
"Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot." said by Clarence Thomas. I agree, and this book should have you opening those doors.
A long waited book regarding manners in this high-tech worldReview Date: 2002-10-22
pilots, faxes, cell phones, and emails are all part of most
people's lives. So how do we maximize the uses of
technology in a concise and conscientious way?
I picked up this book because I was fed up with never
knowing for sure what the rules are when it comes to
"the proper manners regarding high tech".
Communication is very difficult, made even harder by
the 'words only' content of email. Today we are
interacting primarily in email or on cell phones or even through
faxes with our customers and the management chain. It
is crucial to present one's self in the best possible
light. Mrs. High in this book adopts a wonderfully
easy reading style, that is light-hearted and yet to
the point. The author escorts you through
your improvement and growth of the utilization of
multiple high tech mediums. The more I read, the more
I wished I could just sit down and talk to this author
in person. A very interesting read by a very
interesting author. If you are a new email writer
looking for some guidance, or an old hack that has
forgotten some of the basics and needs some
improvement, then this is a great place to start.
Young people, particularly, highly oriented to
computers and email will benefit greatly from this
book. So will people in administrative roles where
writing clearly and succinctly is so critically
important in this sped-up world. In fact, I have bought
a few additional copies and given them to some of my
coworker, just as a reference tool.
Cyberspace has its own culture. To top it all off,
people from every culture are online and are
communicating more than ever before. If you have
committed social blunders and don't want to offend
others, then this is the book for you. It is etiquette
in cyberspace.
High-Tech Etiquette: Perfecting the Art of Plugged-In PoliteReview Date: 2002-10-17
Ms. High takes you easily from the basics of using e-mail including whether it's appropriate to extend invitations, send thank-you notes, or inform friends and families of a death of a friend or loved one. She touches on what seem to be areas of common sense such as salutations and closings, but items which are often forgotten.
Useful information is also given regarding emoticons and e-mail terms as well as good guidelines for sending attachments.
This book, however, is not limited to the use of e-mail. Ms. High also does a good job in covering the use of fax machines and cell phones. Her section cell phone courtesies should be mandatory reading for anyone who has or is going to buy a cell phone.
After reading this book, I was tempted to send copies off to several well-placed executives as a "gentle reminder" of good manners in the workplace and in public!

The Only Comprehensive Internet Book for Business ManagersReview Date: 1998-03-15
A Golden Collection of Internet Business Ideas!Review Date: 1998-08-24
Emery, a seasoned business pro, sees the Internet as a terrific means to conduct business. He guides his readers along with sound advice and wisdom on obtaining the right computer equipment, the right software, and the right Internet Service Provider. Emery covers a broad range of topics, providing information about Internet business law, financial transactions, intranets, marketing, Web page design and construction, and the caring for customers.
Strengths of the book are found in areas of advertising and promoting one's Website on the Internet. According to Emery, there is more to advertising and promoting than simply dishing out Web pages for the world to see! Emery will help readers determine who their customers are and how to advertise and promote to obtain maximum results Throughout this book, Emery offers his guidance in a concise, straight, forward manner, such as Ten Steps to Internet Success, The Ten Commandments of E-mail, Eleven Steps to Marketing on the Net, and Five Steps to Customer Service and Support, that hit hard to the core of conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers sound business strategies and principles, that if followed, will result in outstanding business success.
Of special interest to readers, Emery includes helpful "danger flags" throughout the book that provide insightful warnings of potential problems that readers may encounter while conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers a number of helpful examples, the actual experiences of himself and others, so that readers may avoid the same problems others have experienced. These are important matters considering the amount of abuse that has transpired on the Internet in the name commerce in recent years!
Of further interest to readers are the recommended reading resources provided for the benefit of the reader. Emery selects many of the finest Internet business books, magazines, newsletters, and online resources available today, saving the reader from the laborious task of having to wade through the vast amount of material around. I suspect that Mr. Emery sneaked into my home and had a look at my library! Emery is a business pro and the guidance he offers is top-notch. Don't conduct business on the Internet without this book! Highly recommended!
You Can Benefit By Reading This BookReview Date: 2006-01-23
The author immediately cautions that 70% of the businesses using the Internet today lose money. Some of this loss may be due to the lack of the use of common sense, but in a great many cases it is the failure to understand the unique nature of doing business on the Internet. Vince Emery uses a "Mr. Doom" (skull and cross bones) icon throughout the book to highlight messages warning you of common mistakes.
The book is divided into 25 chapters; starting from "Business at the Speed of Light" and ending with "118 Cheap or Free Business Resources on the Net." Throughout the book information sources on the Web are given in bold type. (Want to know about doing business in Japan? Try www.gwjapan.com. Much of it is in English and it is updated weekly. See page 656.)
This book is clearly written and is in the practical, nuts and bolts, hand-on style of writing. He stresses "do a little homework first." An incredible amount of useful and free information is available if you use the search engines and directories listed in the book. He gives one to five star ratings for items in this listing and in other listings. The author gives the current cost figures for the equipment and software required. The range is enormous, from free software to over $100,000.
Know what you need before you leap. In his chapter, "Email: Quickest Bang for Your Buck," he enumerates the cost savings and the communication benefits that the use of email can give your business. At the same time, he notes pitfalls. Email use can overwhelm. Suggestions for controlling this are given. He warns email can be read by others (including competition), altered, and faked (known as spoofing). Encryption and adding digital signatures can be used to secure your email.
Establishing a Web site has been a boom to certain industries, but a flop for others. Lists of both are given. Costs for setting up a Web site can vary greatly. Yet again, do your homework first. Be especially aware that some services that are offered are just plain con operations. He gives a 12 step sequence for building your Web site.
The author stresses the importance of effective writing in order that your Web site succeeds. He notes, for example, Kentucky Fried Chicken sells "finger-lickin' good" and not "dead chicken parts." Also stressed is that the top of a Web page is crucial. This is called "above the fold" and is an expression derived from the newspaper field. When you look at a newspaper vending rack you buy the whole paper based on what you see "above the fold."
There are many seeming small things that can trip up a newcomer to the Internet. For example, writing something in all capital letters is considered shouting. It is wise to reread your messages for possible misinterpretations. We often fail to realize that much of our daily conversation is colored by the tone of our voice and that this is often lost in written communications.
Another area where newcomers may come to grief is "spamming," that is, sending advertising email to people who did not ask for it. This is like a "collect phone call sales pitch." It can result in serious reactions. Your fax machine may be jammed with hate faxes and you might even end up being terminated by your access provider.
Just about everyone in the business world can benefit by reading this book. The Internet has opened the world market to even a one person operation and if you are with a large corporation, your boss, some Friday, may suddenly say "Jones, we need to be on the Internet. Find out how by Monday." Jones, grab this book and read fast.
Excellent BookReview Date: 2000-08-18
Privies edition of the "How to Grow Your Business on the Internet" was one of very the first books about online entrepreneurship I've read. Ant it was really great! But this 3rd edition is much better. It explains the ins and outs of the online business world in plain English -- especially good for beginners.
This is not a computer book, though: if you want to learn about PC's operating systems you'll need additional literature. This excellent book by Vince Emery supplies you with tips on how to market, publicize, and advertise your business online as well as how to generate strategic information using the Internet. A particularly useful chapter uses examples from actual businesses to explain why Internet projects fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.
This is a great place to start! If considering an Internet/Home based business, this is a must read. This is a book for people who take their first steps in the world of Internet entrepreneurship. And I have to say the book does get you thinking and acting. Highly recommend.

A Great Book For Computer UsersReview Date: 1999-06-30
Terrific Guide for All People who own a computerReview Date: 1999-03-09
Finally a book about computers we can all understand!Review Date: 1997-07-06
This book is a great way to discover what all the interplanetary terms and acronyms salespeople smirkingly throw at you while wandering around a computer store. SCUZZI? Local Bus? PCMCIA slots? Flash BIOS? The average buyer knows not of these things. I liked the way this book takes you by the hand and gently guides you through the maze of the computer world.
I'm a self-taught, read-as-you-go, experiment-at-will designer and have learned software without professional guidance. And there is much basic computerese I have missed along the way. My suggestion would be for all of you out there who are either considering purchasing a computer system or have one but are fairly clueless as to REALLY understanding what you have at your fingertips, to purchase this book immediately, read it from cover to cover, and sit back smugly with a cup of coffee, secure in the knowledge that you now are at least as smart as your computer.

The best examples of graphic design that I have seenReview Date: 2003-01-02
By far, the most outstanding part of the book is the pictures. The publishers spared no expense in the quality of the pictures and they are clear, plentiful and demonstrate the design points made by the interviewees. They demonstrate how good graphic design is done and give all designers a goal to aspire to.
There are two parts to quality graphic design, the ability to code and the ability to push the right aesthetic buttons. The second is the hardest, but not to these people. These are some of the best examples of graphic design that I have ever seen.

BOOK REVIEW: After three days of reading and re-reading HTML & Web Artistry 2, the sections that contained the most useful information were the HTML Quick Reference List found on page 322 and Style Sheet & JavaScript Reference List found on page 332. Coming in a close second, are ones called Case Studies that also contain very useful information such as web-safe palette, style sheets. Quick Time, page loading, Flash, sound loops seamless transitions and pre-loading and layers. The Case Studies Chapters end with a Summary of the chapter and URLS used.
The format of the book has highlighted boxes with tips and notes, the same as many web specific book formats are using. There are graphics through out the book to show examples of those subjects being discussed.
Many of the chapters were done in a question and answer format and were specific to the people being interviewed. It seemed more like a promotional piece for their shop than an instructional book on HTML and Web Artistry. Granted, you can always get a bit of information by reading what others have done but this wasn't what the title of this book lead one to believe it would be.
The two reference chapters and these Case Studies make this a viable book from which to learn something.
Unique blend of art and technical topicsReview Date: 2002-08-08
Be aware that the material is focused on aesthetics, usability and effective use of multimedia more than on the technical aspects. For the accomplished designer and coder this book will provide enough examples of well thought out design from which you can create sites with your own spin. The less technical reader may be frustrated by the emphasis on design instead of detailed instructions on how to develop and implement the ideas and examples in the book. However, even for that audience this book offers valuable information. Specifically, it's easier to learn how to code and perform technical tricks than it is to make a usable web site that uses advanced tools to their best advantage.
What I like about the book is the blend of art and technology in the subject matter. For example, the chapters on color and type opened my eyes to just how significant these can be (I am a more technical reader). I also learned much about user interface design and navigation, even though I've always paid attention to these for the web sites that I've developed.
Overall, for accomplished technical users this book will give insights into the interface design aspects of web sites, and for the accomplished designers it will provide useful technical information about Flash, Dreamweaver and popular multimedia formats. It will not, however, teach web development in the technical sense, and may overwhelm beginners who are more concerned with learning the basics.
New Inspiration for Old DogsReview Date: 2002-08-27
Susan and Natalie have presented a beautifully illustrated, sometimes humorous, and informative look into the latest offerings for Web Designers. Taking real life examples they weave throughout the fine lines between designer and developer settling in a cozy spot where one person can wear both hats.
Tips that may seem obvious at first, are useful and tested, and offer insight for both novice and seasoned designer. (for example, I love the idea of taking snapshots of the world around us to create new color palettes)
Simple enough to understand, but spiked with fancy flourishes, HTML & Web Artistry 2 is an inspiring read that offers plenty of jumping off points for those with enough hunger to do so.

4 Years Later and Still a Great Book..Review Date: 2001-07-22
The CDROM itself is packed with useful tools and examples, and the writing style is at times way too entertaining for a technical book.
I owe my career to this book: this is how I took the step up from making simple home pages to planning & building professional web sites.

HTML learning has never been easier.Review Date: 2001-02-20
Starting off this 320-page book is basic HTML layout including tags, the head section and comments. The creating and organizing of web pages are broken down into topics like lists, images, links, both internal, external and bookmarks.
Continuing on the topics of formatting the page with fonts, colors, backgrounds and sound are covered. You then move into the world of tables, CSS, and finally frames. You have over 60 labs to work with and learn from and there are review questions to aid in you studying.
With and wealth of examples to learn from you have just about everything you need. What the author's might want to include in the next version is a cd-rom with HTML editors, utilities and practice files. Overall this book is a great value for the money.
