Being new to the AS/400, I ordered this book to learn about AS/400 CLP. This is an excellent, one or two semester college-level course on AS/400 Control Language Programming. Get off by yourself and go through this book chapter by chapter, doing the exercises, and by the time you are finished, you will feel confident about your ability to do CL programming! Excellent reference book also!

Of all the Visual QuickStart books that I've read, this book is by far the best. It explains how to use all of CorelDRAW 7's features in easy to follow steps that even a novice like myself can understand. Also, although it's not its purpose, it does a very good job in teaching the user about the software, beyond just merely how to use it. It gives the user an overview about what makes the software tick, without the overkill that one can find in other books about CorelDRAW 7. It has been a lifesaver for me, for it enabled me to teach myself the software, which is what "QuickStart" is all about.

Does what it sets out to do - good quickstart guide

I like the Visual Quick Start range of books a lot as they help me to get started with the minimum pain. I wanted a quick-in to Corel Draw (7) and this handy book summarises all the main functions of Corel Draw. It's entirely in black and white but is written in manageable sections that helped me to get started pretty quickly before I felt the need to look out for a more comprehensive manual. Well written, good value.

Step-by-step guidance with really cool graphics!

This book has the step-by-step guidance that I need when I work through a program as complex as CorelDraw 7! In addition, it is really visually awesome. The graphic design in this book puts it way above most computer software books. Using it, you'll find yourself opening whole new creative worlds

Revealing Account of Content in the Digital Age

Review Date: 2001-11-09
This book reveals the true nature of the nearly tectonic shift in the landscape of content being caused by digital technology. Even as the editor of Digital TV magazine, I have not read a book that examines, in such a penetrating manner, and with such a dazzling collection of expert voices, the depth of this dramatic change and what it now means. Further, it reveals the implications for the future of creating and distributing content in the digital age. This book is a must for anyone who cares about navigating the new world of digital content.

The Digital Revolution "Bible"

This is a "must buy" for anyone interested in the digital revolution that is changing the way we communicate. It explains how camcorders, Avids, and computers have changed video, movie-making, web streaming, and how to become part of it. "Digital content" is really what video, TV and movies have become. You can re-use your video and audio in many different ways to better serve clients or create original programming. The book explains what's going on very clearly. Digital video is really computer data, so it's cheaper and easier to work with than "regular" video. And the image is better! You can produce any type of show for less money than ever before, and you can do more things with your video; stream it on the web, put it on a DVD disc, project it as a movie, or re-use clips for other programs. Audio and sound techniques are also included.
"Creating Digital Content" starts off with a funny story by Firesign Theatre's Peter Bergman that makes you realize how much digital video and software has changed the way movies and TV are made. Then there's a really interesting section on what "digital" really means, which is the most concise definition I've ever read. Really helpful is the fact that they go into specifics about the best equipment available... over 25 chapters all about computers, Avids, camcorders, memory, etc. which can be used to make HDTV, corporate video, interactive TV and yes, feature films! Whether you're at a local TV station, a production house, a university A/V department, or you're an "A" list DGA feature film director, these are the NEW tools that you must be familiar with and ready to use.
You'll understand how computers, software and camcorders have become the new ways to make TV, streaming video, and big budget movies. Plus amazing interviews with the giants in the field, such as George Lucas and James Cameron.
I highly recommend "Creating Digital Cinema". It's an invaluable resource for anyone seriously interested in video, TV, streaming, and movies, and at the same it's a great read.

A must-have

For a subject rife with hype and confusion, the editors bring together articles that are by turns surprising, authoritative and laugh-out-loud funny. For industries with notoriously short attention spans, the book reveals the lessons learned from decades of failure and success in Interactive TV and digital TV and gives roadmaps to the future.

I have been using Fred Halsall's book in my computer engineering degree and it has been very useful. This is a dense, fat book that will provide lots of information. It covers the basics, from the essential theory about digital transmission, protocol basics and implementation methods, legacy and wireless LANs, HS LANs, transparent and source routing bridges, packet switching and frame relay networks/protocols, internetworking architectures, protocols and routing algorithms, multiservice broadband networks, TCP/IP and OSI application protocols, data encryption and network security, network management structures like SNMP and CMIP and other stuff. I can complain about some of the excessive use of acronyms that leave some areas of the book much harder to read. I'm talking about hundreds of acronyms here.

Also, Fred's writing is sometimes a bit too dry, sometimes forgetting to give the reader a general idea about the subject, instead of just jumping into all the details. This is something that is better done in other books, especially Andrew Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks". Tanenbaum also shares his sense of humour, which, in a dense volume about telecommunications, ends up refreshing the user. Also, Tanenbaum's dares to share his opinion sometimes, something Halsall seldom does, giving us only the facts and nothing more. But if it's the facts you want, he's good at it.

I found most of the book clear; the section about Huffman data compression for instance, was excellent. I remember having some trouble with the Viterbi EC algorithm, which isn't very well explained. The book also lacks information about some more modern technologies like GSM.

In general, this is a very competent title, and a great resource to the student or the computer professional. Be sure to check Andrew S. Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks", since you might prefer it to this title, or, the perfect choice, get both. (I have them both and some subjects are a lot better in one book, and others are a lot better in the other title).

(Heck, read it even if you are a pro, it's fanatastic!)

Clear concise overviews on the entire mulitmedia development process is what makes this book number 1.
This should be a required text book for any university offering a multimedia program! Way to go Ms. Lopuck!

I recommend this book to my students. It gives an excellent overiew of multimedia tools and techniques. It is, however, a bit of a mixed bag. It covers a great many topics, but none in much detail. Although a bit vague, it is an excellent buy for any students of multimedia or any professionals who want better view of the big picture.
However most multimedia professionals might best spend their money on something more meaty.

I am an ASP.NET newbie and found this book very helpful in understanding authentication, authorization, role based security, input validation etc. I am a desktop developer and found the web development model difficult to understand initially but this book cleared up my mind in the security related parts. The book is written in a very clear and concise manner and uses diagrams to explain concepts which which I found very helpful. In short, this is a very well written book which improved my asp.net knowledge and skills considerably. Highly recommended.

I really wish I could give this book 6 stars, it has been an indespensable resource for learning techniques to develop more secure applications. With so many dangers lurking out there it is increasingly important to not only be able to develop secure applications but to understand the .net security mechanisms as well. This book will leave no questions unanswered, if for no other reason purchase this book for chapter 8 on partial trust, I have not come across any resource that covered this topic so thoroughly. It's treatment of sandboxing and code partitioning alone make the book worth every penny paid. If your looking to continually improve the quality of your code and sites don't leave this book off your list.

This is a book by a MS Developer Security MVP for any and all developers writing ASP.NET 2.0 applications. Not only does it cover all the usual suspects and provides practical prescriptive guidance on how to deal with them with examples; it also deals with the tough "hot topics" like partial trust. The book is both complete in breadth and depth and really does provide a single good reference book on ASP.NET security.

I can not recomend it with more guster.

Confession I helped write the tools chapter which is why I know (and yes I am a fellow MS Developer Security MVP)!

This book, "Digital Audio" is absolutely wonderful. This has to be the best money Iýve EVER spent!

I am a Musician and a Teacher. The topics covered so well are the very things I have struggled to learn - on my own- since 1985. This book covers it ALL!! Thorough, comprehensive, easy-to-understand and well presented with humor and REAL knowledge of the various elements of digital music today (AND yesterday). Everything one needs to know to create first rate recording projects is right here!

I recommend this book to anyone who needs to know how to create music for digital distribution - be it on CD, the Internet, in a Multimedia presentation - wherever. It is an awesome distillation of the knowledge and experience of a Master.

I only wish I'd had it ten years ago!

Dreamweaver has quickly become one of the more popular web design toold available. Its concept of web design with minimal coding appeals to many new designers. This is also a downfall, especially with more experienced designers who like to type all their code themselves.

Most of the books available for Dreamweaver have focused on how to use the basic functions of Dreamweaver, ignoring things like database connectivity with ColdFusion.

This book not only covers the basics of HTML, but it goes into some more advanced topics like CF. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is serious about web design with Dreamweaver.

An amazing book for an amazing program.

It is very apparent that Joseph Lowery has not only a complete understanding of the many Internet technologies available to developers but also has an understanding for the way in which we most efficiently learn them. This book is not only 100% comprehensive but it also presents the material in an easy-to-understand bottoms-up approach that would give novices and professions alike an excellent understanding for web developement and Dreamweaver's role in that development. This book also provides numerous examples for both simple and advanced ways to enhance sites with Dreamweaver's many built-in behaviors.

An exceptional book on the creative process in the IT sector, and how to make the process productive.
Despite the title and the editorial here on Amazon, it's much more than design or history of multimedia; it gives an excellent view of the priorities of human/artifact interactions (software or doorknobs), and highlights many ways of getting much more out of IT than most systems achieve.
The 'stuffed dog' analogy is one of the most serious criticisms of the current attitude toward human-computer interactions that I've heard.

I am an art director for an ad agency, and I design web sites. I discovered this brilliant book at the perfect time. It has made me a better designer and re-awakened my passion for what I do. This small volume is not simply a great design resource: it delves remarkably deeply into the philosophical, spiritual and even political dimensions of design, showing how and why we must infuse the work we do with heart and soul. And lest I make it sound airy-fairy, it's not; It's rigorous, practical and muscular, with not a wasted sentence. And fun to read, too. Bravo.

Read it in the bath.

I know a bit of the history of interactive media, but the more I learn the more I see I don't know nothing. Well this book is helpful on the historical side, because it is talking about the people who do the things. It is helpful also when the third part of the book talk about the creative process, and how to defend yourself against people like bad managers, annoying customers and other supicious bosses.. By giving you some hints on what to replay, when somebody tells you "what ? you're doing nothing but thinking for about an hour and you still have no idea ! hurry up!" And finally, I liked reading the book, because you don't have to be in front of a computer to test examples or whatever, this book is CD-free and is proper to go on vacation, or to offer a friend or to read in the bath... I forgot, but there are also lots of internet links to deeper informations on every topics discussed in the book, well if you like reading a book in front of your computer, you also can. Like the bible, it is a book that you can read more than once..

He explains the filosophy behind the system and takes you to a very dense but funny tour through this machine. It has plenty of examples and teaches basic and advanced funtions. It helps you make your mind on how it was designed and the way you should direct your programming effort. In one day you will start to make your own programs. It strongly recommend this book.
