Larry Magid and Anne Collier are industry experts on child safety online, and their collaboration here is outstanding. "MySpace Unraveled" explains the social networking phenomenon and the related safety issues in an easy to follow and practical way that is a must read for any parent who has children in today's day and age.

Larry Magid's book is the first excellent source for parents to figure out what their kids are doing on MySpace. It teaches parents how to get their own MySpace account, not to spy on their children, but to see what this world is all about. It has lots of good advice for parents although I wish the author would have spent less time on telling parents how to pimp their MySpace page and more on how to talk to their children about safety and particularly about online friendships. All in all, though, a good, valuable read.

Well balanced, excellent guide

This stands out as the best of the MySpace books I've read. It is logically organized and well presented, with color screenshots. The authors present a balanced approach to MySpace, without an alarmist attitude, but with very insightful observations and helpful suggestions, backed by cited research. Their approach is based in the reality of the Web and social networking, addressing the issues one needs to know while guiding the reader through setting up a MySpace account and using MySpace resources.

Sprinkled throughout the book are "Key Parenting Points" which speak directly to parental concerns about MySpace features. Their philosophy on dealing with those parental concerns can be summed up by their statement (on page 12), "There is no substitute for engaged parenting...But that engagement...is less about control than it is about communication." Hence the book is about informing for constructive parenting rather than controlling a teen's access to MySpace.

The writing style is informal and easy. The authors speak as parents and professionals who are actively involved with teens, parents, and the Web. Their experience shows. [...].

This book provides an important perspective for educators implementing technology into their curriculum. The "Big Twelve" categories provide a rich context to connect subject content & skills to developmentally appropriate learning (Chapter 2). The categories also limit the infinite ways to think about connecting web and classroom and this is critical when Technology is used as a teaching tool. The content examples are extensive and span science, social studies, art, music, language arts, and mathematics.

A must read when thinking about Standards and the Technology.

The first three or so chapters of this book contain great step by step information on all of the basics that a teacher needs to use the Internet for Project Based Learning. The following chapters are a collection of 100 or more tried and true online projects. Some of them are ongoing and can be joined, but most of them serve as an example for someone wanting to integrated this kind of instruction. I haven't seen a more helpful book.

NQL simplifies development of bots, intelligent agents, middleware, and web applications, and this book simplifies the use of NQL. This language really does make finding resources on a network as simple as querying a database. The book comes with a full working version of NQL included on disc, so you can see its power first-hand. Definitely worth checking out.

Written by the inventor of the language, what better authority do you need? With more than 500 pre-built code routines in its basic library, NQL is a language you need to know, and Pallmann is the one to teach it to you.

Excellent intro to and details of a powerful language

This book describes NQL version 2.0, and the CD ROM comes with trial versions of NLQ (a Windows version and a Java version in Linux and Macintosh formats). Note: the trial versions are good for 60 days, after which you need to purchase the commercial versions, but the trial period is more than sufficient to evaluate the power of NQL. Also note that the commercial versions are somewhat pricey for individuals, but are reasonably priced for consultants and developers who decide to develop commercial-grade products.

NQL is thoroughly covered in detail, serving as a guide to the language, as well as an idea resource for how to effectively use the NQL language and development environment to create and deploy intelligent agents. The examples cover the full range of web-enabled and e-commerce applications from LDAP to credit card processing, as well as going into surprising topics such as web crawling, statistical analysis and XML parsing. These, individually or combined, are a solid foundation for automated competitive intelligence gathering, online bidding and intelligent supply chain management.

As a scripting language NQL is powerful. The book's many examples clearly show how you can incorporate powerful functions in 4 to 5 lines of NQL code that would take hundreds of lines of Java or C++ code. In addition, NQL can be called from other languages, such as Java.

If you're a professional developer who wants to evaluate NQL this book is an ideal way to get started, especially with the trial versions that come with it. You will also find a wealth of additional information and scripts on the web site that supports the book.

This is a very solid book that covers a lot of ground. Includes referential and troubleshooting information for Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, and other media. A good balance of in-depth information, good/descriptive graphics, and good lists of probable troubleshooting causes. He also gives a thorough introduction to the different diagnostic tools available, and has a lot of extra referential stuff in the back.

I think the book is easy to understand and much more detailed and complete than a lot of other troubleshooting books that I've seen out there. If you are into serious troubleshooting, I'd invest in this book.

This book is the first I have seen to cover all! LAN and WAN technologies and the first to get right to the point of troubleshooting. It lists hundreds of symptoms and root causes for networking problems! An incredible resource. A more extensive index would have been nice. - However, a must have "travel and survival" kit for everyone in networking.

The troubleshooting sections were excellent!

The troubleshooting sections were excellent. Each section can be read from start to finish, or specific chapters can be used as a reference when working on a particular problem (token ring problem, Ethernet problem, etc.). The use of "Symptom and Causes" is great, and the summaries at the end of each chapter listing the most frequent causes of problems provide a good overview of what could be wrong.

A "Must Have" Addition to Any Network Analysis Library
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-13
This book is exactly what I was looking for concerning troubleshooting TCP/IP with a network analyzer. This book starts with the level 1 troubleshooting and goes from there. The book not only covers general TCP/IP issues, but also thuroughly covers vendor implementations, including Novell, Microsoft and Unix specific issues.

I've had the book only three days, and have already used it to solve a couple of network analysis problems. The content is most useful.

The book is well thought out, and well organized. I particularly appreciate the packet by packet explanations and real world troubleshooting examples. The extensive appendixes are a wonderful addition.

If you could only buy one book for TCP/IP network analysis, I'd get this one.

Just as Zahid was, I was impressed within 10 minutes while in the bookstore. (I bought the book while in the bookstore)

First, forget any thoughts about a Novell/Netware focus, this is a book about TCP/IP, and it includes some chapters about Microsoft's and Novell's implementations of TCP/IP. Excellent.

The book does an outstanding job of covering the subject at the intermediate to advanced level. It is not for newbies, and it is not for geeks. IMO, "serious" students/end users/LAN administrators will find it very useful.

It took me only 10 minutes of thumbing through the book in the shop before I decided to buy it. I have just read it cover-to-cover and can categorically state that it covers its subject matter superbly. Although it is a hefty 1000-page tome, the text is lucid and written in a no-nonsense style. It gets right down to business with numerous (and accurate) tables, diagrams and screen shots. This book will teach you everything you need to know about troubleshooting TCP/IP. If you are thinking of buying such a book, you can't go wrong with this one. Congratulations to the authors and Novell Press.

I learned computer networking in the early 90s. Among all the books that I bought, borrowed, and read, this particular title makes it to the top three.

Even now, ten years later, it still serves as an excellent explanation of many networking concepts. You will understand exactly why TCP belongs in the fourth layer and IP, in the third.

It's a great book. I still have mine.

Review Date: 1998-10-14
More and more my job requires me to hook various pieces of networking and computing equipment directly to the internet. Because of this I am not as professionally interested in the internet from the web page/Java/browser point of view, as I am in its physical layer, network component hardware and the fund amental softwares that run it. Additionally, job deadlines and practical restrictions of the workplace prevent me from taking too academic an approach to the underlying subjects of the internet, so I find myself constantly in need of lucid and pragmatic treatments of technical stuffs not easily satisfied by the vapid surveys presented in so-called Quick Guides, or Idiot Guides, or whatever the current popular rendering is as the moment among the computer press. As such, it was a special delight to discover Novell's Internet Plumbing Handbook. It fills a gaping hole in the networking literature of this era.

Mr Rybaczyk is obviously a talented and skilled presenter of technical subjects. His humor and easy approach to the subject suggests and man well at home in his material. He tackles each and every corner of the complex networks we call the internet in a fashion that renders each component as an understandable and wholly manageable morsel. Taken as a whole, the prospect of actually attaching your network, or part of your network, to the internet is a frightening proposition, but under Mr Rybaczyk's adept care you will be nailing down the bits and pieces of your internet connection that need to be added, upgraded and/or enhanced to optimize performance and service.

I especially liked his chapter on TCP/IP Routers and variable-length subnetting, and defy anyone to come away from the chapter without a sense of accomplishment at having mastered a subject that many authors beat to death but few bring to life. To be fair, Rybaczyk's use of the pie chart to illustrate subnet addressing is a big help and well done. Other chapters of merit include: Router Configuration, Internet Routing and his discussion of Switches in these emerging networks.

If you are a student of network technology or need to bone up on modern terminology or current cabling media, don't overlook this clear and concise reference. The introductory material on the OSI Model and IP addressing will get you started right away and you might find yourself in the midst of backbone router configuration and Tag Switching when you next look up from its pages.

I have read many books on Dynamic HTML, CSS, etc., and this is one of the best! While the examples are at times a bit silly or self-indulgent, they always illustrate the point at hand in a clear and intelligent fashion. The author clearly has an excellent understanding of all parts of the DHTML world and leads the beginner through progressively more difficult steps very well.

The one inevitable caveat is that this book is based solely on DHTML/CSS for Internet Explorer and the examples will not work in Netscape. However, this book will provide you with a good understanding of the fundamentals necessary for programming for either browser.

All programming books should be as good as this one; and yes the Official IE4 SiteBuilder Toolkit is indeed a web programming book. Alan Simpson covers cascading style sheets, Dynamic HTML, ActiveX controls and VBScript as well as any other author in the technical book publishing industry. Well, there are deeper books on ActiveX but they don't include smart, small, easy to test examples, like this one does. Alan Simpson's examples make excellent starting points for ones own experiments.Larger discussions of object models and technical specifications can also be found here along with listings for electronic (and other) resources to aid in further research and study. The appendix on RGB and decimal color values is a wonderful extra. Yes it's a Microsoft centric book, but you can have a lot fun with this one.

Very easy to read, excellent examples, comprehensive.

I was actually able to sit and read the majority of this book on a flight without access to a computer at all. It really is very well written giving clear examples without over simplifying. You must remember that the techniques are for the most part specific to IE4 and therefore will not work with Netscape but I guess there are other books for that.

All aspects of DHTML are covered in a logical sequence and the only real prerequisite is some experience with web design and straight HTML. The CD is well stocked with examples and tools.

This is not a highly technical book to be digested by pure programmers, but it does provide a root to some powerful techniques for the slightly adventurous web author.

Without any doubt the most read of all of my computer books!
