Not just multimedia

An exceptional book on the creative process in the IT sector, and how to make the process productive.
Despite the title and the editorial here on Amazon, it's much more than design or history of multimedia; it gives an excellent view of the priorities of human/artifact interactions (software or doorknobs), and highlights many ways of getting much more out of IT than most systems achieve.
The 'stuffed dog' analogy is one of the most serious criticisms of the current attitude toward human-computer interactions that I've heard.

I am an art director for an ad agency, and I design web sites. I discovered this brilliant book at the perfect time. It has made me a better designer and re-awakened my passion for what I do. This small volume is not simply a great design resource: it delves remarkably deeply into the philosophical, spiritual and even political dimensions of design, showing how and why we must infuse the work we do with heart and soul. And lest I make it sound airy-fairy, it's not; It's rigorous, practical and muscular, with not a wasted sentence. And fun to read, too. Bravo.

Read it in the bath.

I know a bit of the history of interactive media, but the more I learn the more I see I don't know nothing. Well this book is helpful on the historical side, because it is talking about the people who do the things. It is helpful also when the third part of the book talk about the creative process, and how to defend yourself against people like bad managers, annoying customers and other supicious bosses.. By giving you some hints on what to replay, when somebody tells you "what ? you're doing nothing but thinking for about an hour and you still have no idea ! hurry up!" And finally, I liked reading the book, because you don't have to be in front of a computer to test examples or whatever, this book is CD-free and is proper to go on vacation, or to offer a friend or to read in the bath... I forgot, but there are also lots of internet links to deeper informations on every topics discussed in the book, well if you like reading a book in front of your computer, you also can. Like the bible, it is a book that you can read more than once..

Recently I had the opportunity to hear Bob Connolly speak in person. After hearing Mr. Connolly's presentation, I immediately ordered his book.

The book is impressive in layout as well as content. Mr. Connolly backs up his skill and puts it into real time production with this book. The accompanying CD (in Adobe PDF) is identical to the books layout, but includes the interactive Rich-Media presentations.

I have not found another book with the most up to date information on interactive PDFs. Mr. Connolly uses the interactive Rich-Media CD to reinforce the subject matter of the book. A must read for those working with or planning interactive Rich-Media technology presentations.

This is a great book to take you from the start of PDf right to what Bob thinks is the end out come of the next generation of the internet. What a vision it is and he explains it all along the way showing you the true powers of Adobe and its master piece PDF. This book will truly drive your mind wild with all the things that one can do with the right tools at their fingers. It has wonderful examples that if you use the inserted CD, come to life right in front of your eyes.
The only down side to the book is that all he does is talk about all the wonderful, great things PDF do but he tends to leave you hanging on how one can go about getting all these tricks done. Really, this book is for an advanced user of Creative Suite and someone that is looking for the "WOW" factor when it comes to sales, marketing and website design. If this book does not inspire you to create rich dynamic interactive PDF nothing will. I really enjoyed the book but I also learned that when it comes to PDF I am a novice.
If you are into design this your book but also search for other books that teach you all the things that Bob talks about and I do mean OTHERS. You will not find any of this information in one book unless Bob wrote a HOW TOO as well. Come on BOB, I will be waiting.

This is abosolutely the very best book I have read on e-business. The authors takes you by the hand on every step; from learning about software and hardware to security. In a Time when e-business springs a lot of fakes this is the book that will make anyone confortable with this facinating facet of doing business.

It also guides through the overlooked areas of integration such as legacy systems and supply chain automation.Although the chapter on Trust and Security could have been more expanded.Anyone wishes to setup an online ebusiness store should read this book to avoid the basic pitfall.

I bought this book after a lot of research. I think Noel Jerke has a done a great job on laying out the book. This book will last a long time due to its simplicity and code resuability.
I give 5 stars to the book. The only minus is that the code on CD is not complete and is missing a lot of code which is covered on the book. Nevertheless, it gave me what I am looking for I have designed a site referencing the book. www.siweiinternational.com.
Great job Noel.

This simply the excellent book. I have Noel's other book named e-commerce developer's guide which is simply excellent too. And both books complete the topic e-commerce best way. These two books use enterprize level database, uses stored procedures, Active server pages to make websites which are excellent and can modify in any way reader can think, I mean database connectivety is flexble enough to adapt to most scenerios. Good thing is that most of webhosting providers are happy to host these type of sites because of least use of dll components, I mean i have never faced any problem with webhost providers becuase I use the same method as given in Noels books of e-commerce.

I run one of those few start ups that has survivied. I've had several offers from competitors in the brick and motar world to buy my business. Some offers were very interesting and others I've since learned were less than honest. Keogh's book helps me identify good candidates for purchasing my company and shows me serious pitfalls to avoid. This is a good little book that explains all the ins and outs about e-mergers and buying and selling a company. I highly recommend this book.

I owned one of those start up dot coms that found a niche in the market and actually made a profiting when funding dried up. I had offers from a number of established traditional companies to take over my business. Fortunately, I stumbled over this book in time to avoid making potentially costly mistakes. I strongly recommend anyone thinking of selling their e-business to read this book before looking for buyers. You'll avoid a lot of pitfalls.

A must for anyone thinking about selling or buying a dot com

Ken Allard of Jupiter Media Metrix is correct when he says this book is a comprehensive guide to M&A for anyone who wants to acquire cheap assets and build a winner from the rubble. Keogh walks you through all the fine details of buying and selling a dot com. I found particularly interesting the coverage of real world experiences of those who have worked through their own deals. It's as if you're getting the how to's and what worked what to avoid all in one very readable book. Good job.

Perfect e-primer for all parents!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-29
Ordering a Dell for my kids this past Christmas was the easy part. The hard part has been figuring out how to make it a peaceful part of our daily lives. (Why can't they share? Where are they surfing to? What does POS mean? And oh yeah, who might be stalking my kids online?!) This book provides some answers...

The "just a regular mom" author knows precisely what matters most to other parents when it comes to technology. Yes, the Internet is full of wicked information (i.e., "the average age of exposure to online pornography is 11 years old"). But rather than an issuing an all-system shut down, she recommends ways to stay safe by using kid-friendly browsers and filters. Her down-to-earth tone not only takes the mystery out of techno-speak, but it also encourages having fun with all of the new toys available.

In fact, my favorite parts of the book are when she lets her ample creativity shine. For example, who knew that blog isn't a four letter word when it comes to kids? She says that blogs allow kids to connect with others, practice commitment to keep the blog updated and build confidence in their writing skills. (Of course, she lists the possible dangers of blogs, too, such as not sharing too much personal info.) She encourages parents to go beyond just learning about the technology, and to find ways to incorporate it into a family's routine. After reading the book, you'll no longer vilify video games, but be ready to grab a joystick and play alongside junior!

Even though my kids are too young (by a nano-second) for text messaging and cell phones, this book has prepped me on what to expect when that time arrives. The extensive resources section lists web sites ahoy, including a "fun for kids" age-by-age guide that will stay perched by their computer as a reference.

I thought that teaching my kids manners and math would suffice, but I now realize that my responsibility extends to places that before never even existed. Responsible parents, take note! This is a wonderful, fun and important resource.

Aims to Entertain and Enlighten (Thank goodness!)

At first glance, even the most involved parent might think, "I'll never be able to keep up with my tech-savvy kids, so why even bother trying?" But author Sharon Miller Cindrich takes an otherwise monumental task and breaks it down into the manageable necessities for keeping parents and kids connected in our newly wired world.

Not only does she cover the basics--internet, television, cell phone--she even ventures into the fascinating-if-you-don't-already-know-about-it territory of global positioning technology, podcasting, and text messaging. Best of all, Cindrich is funny, often cracking jokes and making puns and anaogies that keep the prose lively and entertaining. E-Parenting such a pleasurable read, I bet you'll forget it's a how-to book!

Seems like bringing the whole family into the 21st century with the greatest of ease is what Cindrich had in mind all along in this quick read, which obviously required mountains of research on her part. Don't be surprised if you get halfway through this book and want to start taking advantage of the technological advances for yourself as well as for your kids!

A handy resource guide for parents, this book is written in simple non-techie language interjected with a bit of humor to teach parents about internet safety, cell phones, video and computer games, instant messaging, chat rooms, digital cameras, GPS devices and more. Tech-Tips are featured throughout the book to summarize important information. Each section of the book highlights a type of technology and provides tips on how to use the technology with your children as well as great ideas for using it to get your kids involved in family projects and activities such as creating digital memory books, family blogs, geocaching, and more. The index is full of online resources for homework help, safe websites for kids grouped by age, and more.

This book is different that a lot of the other eBay stuff available. It's more like a value guide. There's a lot of insight into finding cheap prices and bidding to keep prices low in here. I especially like the insight on finding travel bargains and cheap business wear, two of my favorite things to buy on eBay.

This book gave me tons of new ideas about how to shop on ebay. I didn't know that I could buy such interesting items - Pizza? It's written in an easy to read style, and I actually laughed out loud while I was reading it. Some of the stuff I knew, but I really learned a lot about the different areas of ebay that I hadn't visited before. I also found some new ideas on how to get deals. It's a fun book at a great price, I'm giving it as a holiday gift to all my friends who are always asking me about ebay.

I've been shopping on eBay (as well as Amazon :-) for years. But my mother and mother-in-law are both novices. They're always bugging me with, "What's this eBay thing? What can I get on there? My friend completed her discontinued china set on eBay.." All with the gist of "How can I do this too." As soon as I saw this book was coming out, I picked up two copies of it (mother in laws are rarely great sharers) and gave it to them. Finally! They get what eBay is all about. They know how to set up their user accounts, how the "store" is laid out, how to uncover the best deals and, most importantly for them, how to stay safe when buying on eBay. Now, they're ready to get off and running. In fact, they picked up so much great information, they even taught me a few things (no more staying up late waiting for an auction to end in order to swoop in with the best bid!) This book is great! It's an easy read, and you can jump around to find the points that are most relevant to you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become an eBay power shopper.

To give a brief background about myself. I have been one of the primary contributor and committer of the Web Tools Platform (WTP) eclipse tools project since its inception through WTP 1.5 release. I contributed the Validation Framework component for this project. I read a large portion of this book and can say that this most comprehensive book that explains the complete WTP in a step by step fashion that can be help you easily understand the whole WTP project, its sub projects, its components and features through several real world examples. I strongly recommend this book to all users and contributors of WTP.

Eclipse Web Tools Platform: Developing Java(TM) Web Applications

This is an excellent book; I specially liked the iterative approach (for example, for presentation tier, iteration 1: HTML, iteration 2: add CSS, iteration 3: add Javascripts, iteration 4: XML and XSLT, iteration 5: DTD)authors have taken. I have used examples from this book, with Eclipse and NetBeans, of course for Eclipse user this book has added value, since it goes through configuration of Eclipse and recommended practices. Please ignore the gripe about errors in the code; there are two minor errors which are detailed in the errata on book's companion site, it doesn't take more than a minute to fix those two issues.

Authors discuss All three tiers in great detail. How about this, by page 85 you would be deploying a simple web service (and you would be amazed how simple it is).

Great book for getting up and running with WTP

Though I have had some experience in Java, Eclipse, and WTP, a recent project required me to get more into depth. This book got me through the whole development process. It explained to me clean coding techniques when writing web apps in Java, how to get my web server up and running for use with WTP, to get my apps to talk to the server, debugging using different tools, and unit testing in a web environment.

This book was an invaluable addition to my collection, and is also a great reference now that I have mastered these concepts.
