A great book for anyone thinking about buying a business.

This book delivers answers to questions you may not have even considered before buying a business. It is an easy to understand, step-by-step practical approach to a highly involved process, and could save one thousands of dollars and many long hours of disappointment. Tuller delivers the goods from the start of the buying process to the finish, giving practical examples all along the way. Highly recommended!

A Poor Guide

The author should concentrate less on the quantity of books he throws together and more on the quality of the material. As a business broker, I felt the book was full of unrelated tangents and only occasionally provided the reader with useful insight.

Hidden Wealth: How to Reap Big Profits From Surplus Goods and Equipment in the 21st Century

Excellent information...again!

A couple of years ago, a friend and I decided to try our hand at the surplus business that everyone was talking about. He ordered a course from a company called ACL and after months of frustration with the material and company, we almost gave up the idea. We ran across Mr. Kulesza's book, "Hidden Wealth: How to find, buy, sell and broker surplus and liquidated goods" and fearing it might be another scam, we almost didn't buy it. What a mistake that would have been! After we read the book several times, the whole concept of the industry suddenly became clear to us. We were on the wrong track all along, thus our frustration. Since then we've built up a great closeout/surplus business that supports both our families very well. When we heard that Mr. Kulesza released a new fourth edition, "Hidden Wealth: How to reap huge profits from surplus goods and equipment in the 21st century" we had to have it. He outdid himself with this updated edition. Anyone wanting down-to-earth, no bull, step by step information about surplus must read this book.

Contrary to what one reviewer wrote, there is nothing in the book about antiques! Don't know where that came from. And the text is not large...it's small and packed on pages with no filler material. A meaner, leaner version of the previous edition.

I'll forever be grateful to the author for his fine work and dedication to the industry. There's a good reason this book made it to the fourth edition. It changed our lives for the better. It's the best forty bucks I've ever spent.

Lots of Rah Rah, very little real meat

The big type, the philosophical filler pages, and the fact that he's basically saying "call around for hours, and see if anyone has anything they are desperate to get rid of, then turn around and sell it at a profit" fulfilled my expectation that this book would be virtually worthless to anyone trying to find out exactly HOW to make money in this business.

This book was biased towards antiques, which I know absolutely nothing about, and would certainly lose my shirt attempting to sell. I had hoped instead for some SPECIFIC examples of where to go and find items to sell. Instead, this book is mostly vague "you can do this" rah rah stuff. Utterly worthless to me, especially at the obscenely high price for a paperback with big type.

I would like to recomend this book that helped immensely to our study group to approve the third exam on the CPIM certification from APICS, also the presentations in flash that are in its website, is an excellent aid for a better comprenhension of the topics and very helpfull when explaining to groups.

Too Complicated

This book is too complicated and not well-written. Reading this book feels like reading a science or an engineering book more than a management book. It's focusing on mathematical formulas in a very high level of detail, which the reader finds uselss. I found myself skipping a lot of pages; the pages I skipped are definitly more than ones I read. The only reason I bought this book is because it's a CPIM required source. You are probably checking this book out for the same reason. I hope by the time you read my review, CPIM will decide to eliminate this book from its list of required sources.

Interesting combination of blue sky and practical

This book is difficult to classify other than it ties together a number of related, but different, disciplines. It is also one of the most interesting books on ERP, CRM and SCM I have ever read because of the eclectic array of topics and fascinating points of view.

Chapters I liked based on professional interest are: Auditing the Implementation, Operation and Maintenance of ERP Software, The Ongoing Change in the Practice of Auditing Information Technology, Auditing Supply Chain Solutions and Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Case Studies in Auditing a Company's Financial Statements and Other Reports, Auditing the Security/Protection Methodology and Providing Improvements. These are solidly written and thoroughly cover all aspects of the topics. This is no surprise if you are familiar with Mr. Chorafas' work, which is heavily slanted towards financial management.

I also liked "The Next Frontier in Technology and in Supply Chain Management", which is one of the more visionary chapters in the book. It also has one of the longest titles I have ever seen (I truncated the complete title name). Unfortunately, like the title, well crafted sentences are not a hallmark of Mr. Chorafas' writing. Despite that, the information he provides between the covers of this book is thought-provoking and excellent fodder for long-range strategic planning.

If you are an architect, strategic planner of CIO of a company that employs or plans to employ any two or the three foundation systems discussed in this book (ERP, CRM or SCM) this book is essential reading. It is also an excellent resource for consultants who specialize in any of the three system types.

Great Titles/ Poor Content

Chorafas book is tedious to read. The titles are excellent, but the majority of the time I found the content under the title poorly researched, off the subject or focused only on one insignificant point instead of the subject title.

How things used to be, not how they are today. Old processes, old way of doing things. Unfortunately, there's really nothing else out there to fill the gap - this may be the best available. Be warned, if you want to set up a proactive purchasing department, this is not how to do it.

Ancient Dribble

Review Date: 2004-01-10
Ok , first of all The information contained within the volume is ancient. For gods sake this guy is talking about leaded gasoline, and those new fangled transaxle front wheel drive cars .His top pick list for used cars is from 1995.And it gives amazing advise like buy cheap sell high,Dont buy a car that has been pre warmed and to look for rust on the body. Or buy a car that has been whacked.I mean come on, and cold water is good for burns. How much more common sence and simplistic can you get.Plus some of his advise is pure fantasy,"look under the hood of that used car it should be bone dry" Nonsence.I have been a professional mechanic for over 20 years and have never seen a used car that did not have a little leak here or there or for that matter a new car with some miles on it.And they were still quality vehicles. He is talking fantasy not reality, in the used car world. Save your money, you can get the same simple basic info on any consumer auto site free on the net.Oh yeah, and to show you the volumes age nowhere is the term internet ever mentioned in the text. And some of his ideas are down right goofy, dont buy a used car or truck that has had a rebuilt engine or tranny put in it, Oh please!.He is basically telling you to look for that make believe used vehicle that granny drove to the sunday church social and to the repair shop to get her oil changed every three thousand miles. "and of course they would be highway miles"

The only difference between this version and volume one is that this one doesn't contain "How to buy a Used car from a Dealer." Other than that, it's identical. I'd recommend just buying volume 1.

I will never again buy a house without Frank Cook's book, You're Not Buying THAT House Are You? by my side. Actually, I may not even go to sleep again without reading a chapter a night...just for the humor alone!
Seriously folks, this book has had a major calming influence on my life! Our first experience of buying a house included every disaster that Mr. Cook describes , but I only now see some of the humor in it...1 book and 12 years later!
Even Frank Cook's Table of Contents is a joy to read. One-liners like, "One (realestate) agent is not enough, but two is way too many" says it all...doesn't it? Then there's the chapter, "The House Hunt" where Frank calls it "a game of hunters and the hunted, but you're not sure which one you are!" And, my all-time favorite, "Moving the Kids: Yes, you have to take them with you!"
But, at the same time it's a straight-forward, dead serious, extremely helpful easy read....Don't buy that house (or maybe, anything else} without it!

Book has a misleading title.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-16
It's not really going to give you a checklist of things that you want to make sure you do before you sign. Instead it is a book that discusses in general a few things you might want to consider, but doesn't get into any one topic in depth, or even give you any real insider tips other than "hire a real estate attorney" or "hire a buyer broker."

By the time I finished reading the book I felt like I had just read an advertisement for real estate lawyers and real estate brokers. The author doesn't teach you about the home buying process so much as he insist that you leave it up to the professionals. There is even a chapter devoted to the right way to treat your broker!

I say skip this one or get it from your library if you really think you want to read it.

A disappointment. Sure it gives you the basics as each year of these do. However, the best gas mileage isn't compared between cars anymore. That's the main reason I purchased this book. It was getting to be a headache trying to compare online & I thought this book would help.....guess I was wrong!

A readable book for buyers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-18
It is quite worthwhile for the buyers to read this book, as most words in this book are talking to the buyers. After reading this book, you will probably know how important for you to have a team of good negotiators who understand your firm¡¦ true needs and can be quicker to determine if the other party can be trusted or not, and act accordingly in order to maintain a win-win situation for both your firm and suppliers.

This book also gives some effective and interesting ideas to tell readers how to deal with the relationship between buyers and sellers. For instance, the author uses a game called ¡§Red-Blue¡¨ to explain the importance of trust between buyers and sellers. The implication of this game is that if both parties want to have a win-win situation to their relationship, they must trust each other until the end of the relationship. Otherwise, there must be a win-lose situation.

Another useful idea for handling buyer-seller relationship is called ¡§Touch-point management¡¨, that is a logical way to create guidelines for managing the relationship processes and defining preferential problem-solving treatment to preferred suppliers. By using this approach, you can make sure that each touch-point between you and your suppliers will be in control because each touch-point will be assigned to different managers who are responsible to deal with all the matters of their assigned touch-points.

However, there is a drawback on this book, personally, I think that the wordings of this book are not easy to understand. For some complicated points, even the authors have tried their best to provide many diagrams to illustrate them, but it still requires much effort so as to understand them.

I bought this book hoping that the financial editor of Money Magazine would give me some real nuggets of wisdom on car leasing. Alas, this book favored me with basic information available in magazine articles -- which is probably where he gleaned his material. I would love to see a more in-depth and careful analysis of the subject
