Zylstra has effectively packaged more than two decades of experience as a leading practitioner of production and supply chain optimization. Sharing client experiences has allowed Zylstra to add context to what at times is necessarily a technical path to getting the most out of your supply chain for both your organization and your customers. Lean Distribution is a "must have" text on how to successfully analyze and implement proven optimization techniques.

Excellent primer for how to do distribution right

This book is an excellent guidebook for how to setup distribution right the first time. I found many concepts inside that were highly applicable to my business which involves several different and complex distribution challenges due to compliance and lead time constraints. I would encourage anyone looking to setup a distribution network or rework one to read this book.

Outstanding Insights on Lean Distribution/SCM, Methodically written

Review Date: 2006-11-16
Kirk has done an outstanding job in decomposing the issues and content related to an area that is receiving broader attention as businesses leverage lean techniques "outside the four walls". For business models looking for advantages and cost containment opportunities, this is a good place to start to better understand the complexities and techniques associated with Lean Distribution. It is clear that he has been "around the block" with respect to seeing and developing this expertise for businesses across multiple industries and I am encouraged to see others sharing their expertise in this domain (which often lacks the attention it deserves).

Overall, well-written, methodically explained and great insights throughout. A great book to supplement any academic curriculum or Supply Chain initative in my opinion

Good addition to logistician's tool kit

Review Date: 2006-11-25
Applying well tested "Lean principles" across the entire supply chain is the theme of this book. Kirk has done well in expanding lean thinking to distribution challenges as well as pointing out practical ways to apply them successfully. "Pull" verse "push" is not new but he explains how to fully transform a supply chain into demand chain; where end consumer demand triggers replenishment; "When cash registers ring the factory hears and builds to replenish"
He incorporates a holistic view of logistics, and warns to avoid pitfall of optimizing one element at the expense of others. Key nuggets in this book include:
* Building nimble processes which are simple and responsive to overcome the challenge of forecast inaccuracy.
* Establishing segmented customer service levels based on customer's replenishment methods and partnership maturity.
Well thought out, with practical and field tested solutions makes this a valuable addition to every supply chain professional and logisticians tool kit

My background is Microsoft Dynamics GP and Siebel CRM and I have seen a lot of interest in Dynamcis AX. I have no experience in a mfg environment and learned a lot about the basic principles of ERP and the MFG process from the book. I bought the book to see what Dynamcis AX is all about. Reading the book gives you the basic concepts of a Mfg ERP system as well as the key concepts and terminology specific to Dynamics AX. I feel like if you are new to Dynamics AX the book is a great overview as it teaches you the rules based logic in simple terms. I wish the book had a section on the GL transactions and GL flow (WIP/Cost movement) involved in each step as I beleive this is a very important aspect of any financial system.

This is a must have book for any company or consultant wishing to use Dynamics AX to control their supply chain.

This will not teach you everything about Dynamics AX. It will supplement and expand the theory gain from existing training material. This will help you turn the theory into a practical ERP solution.

This is a great book. It is very well written and meets the objectives of three different groups - prospective users, current users, and consultants - so they can derive great value.

I have done lot of training in Dynamics Ax and often times I find users finding it difficult to come to terms with some of the fundamental concepts. This book does a great job of thoroughly explaining some of the most difficult concepts with right level of content.

Another area that I found could be beneficial was the case studies. They allow a reader to picture the material just read in a real life situation which goes a step further than most books or product help.

Overall a great book and a handy reference.

The leading world-famed guru in automation of business-processes Scott Hamilton shows us the tendencies and problems of ERP-market. May be he is not so popular as his colleagues - marketing and management experts. But the concept of ERP penetrated in our life not long ago and the professor Scott Hamilton has been investigating ERP10 years more than this term exists. His fundamental knowledge and large experience are priceless. And he is sharing them with the readers openly.

Just My Thoughts

Review Date: 2007-07-08
My thoughts are:
1. The book provides a great introduction to how ERP systems work from a Supply Chain perspective. That said, much of the content is generalized and could apply to any respectable ERP.
2. The style is good - written for non-technical folk. So, this is fine from a general user standpoint but nowhere near the depth required for a serious, experienced developer.
3. The one thing I found seriously lacking was sufficient screenshots. One of the great strenghts of AX is the user-friendliness of the GUI and the ease of navigation. This is well described but pictures would be better.
4. The focus is clearly on supply chain aspects. This is fine - but - this precludes addressing other fundamental modules such as Financials. I feel to get a clear picture the reader really needs to understand the connection between an operational transactions and (say) the General Ledger. To be fair - the focus was stated up front by the author.
5. I must admit, that I did not get a good feel for the underlying business processes in play within AX. However, the descriptions of some of the key principles were good e.g. item dimensions.
6. Overall, the book does what it sets out to do but having played with AX 4.0 I really feel that the book does not do it justice. Having used or evaluated about 20 ERP systems, AX 4.0 provides outstanding value for such a sophisticated and elegantly architectured product.
Anyway - there you go.

This book is a detailed guide on what to consider when you are thinking of outsourcing to India, but it might leave you with unanswered questions. Overall, I found the book to be a good start in my research. However, I noted that the author omits any anecdotes of project failures in India, and instead he takes the rosy view that all India projects result in lower cost and higher quality. There is little discussion on turn-over rates, which are very high in some fields and negatively impacting projects. (The fact that the author is or was the president of an Indian software association called NASSCOM may explain his positive views). The book also lacks much discussion on in-house outsourcing (using your own employees, but located in India). Finally, the book may leave you with many specific questions, such as infrastructure costs, and requirements for visiting India for business.

A Good Read !

This book has several notable strengths. Author Mark Kobayashi-Hillary, an outsourcing consultant, combines detailed information about India with in-depth knowledge of outsourcing markets, processes and methods. He provides an overview of India and a profile of India's outsourcing industry, including the major players in a rapidly changing marketplace, important aspects of cultural awareness and thoughts on how to organize your outsourcing endeavor, including vendor selection and contract provisions. At times, the organizational structure of the book is somewhat disorienting, shifting focus from travel guide to outsourcing primer to nuts-and-bolts analysis of India's outsourcing market and how best to capitalize on it. Occasionally the narrative flow is a bit mechanical, but who really cares? If your company is considering or already has a major investment in offshore outsourcing in India, this book is an outright must read. Despite its structural flaws, we strongly recommend its authoritative blend of practical business, legal and cultural advice.

Sad but true. I read this book when we were first considering outsourcing. It sounded like a dream come true - cheap, compliant labor at bargain rates. So we jumped in, outsourcing our IT dept. and even some of our legal services.

Now we're facing half a dozen lawsuits. It seems that Indian paralegals don't understand the concept of client confidentiality. They misused some of our client's information and now we're paying the price.

If we can stay in business till '05 I plan to move everything back to Florida. Maybe I can sue the author for the lousy advice his book gives.

This book helped me enormously to understand the challenges and problems I was likely to encounter. I would recommend it to anyone who is starting to look at India.

There is something for everyone involved in outsourcing in this book.

Having read Christine's first book "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner," I was pleased to find that she had written another. After reading the Amazon description, the author's bio and the acknowledgements in the front of the book, I was sure that it was a sequel to the first book. Amazon even has a co-marketing deal where you can buy both books.

I was greatly disappointed to find that most of the info in the book - down to the examples and quotes she uses - came straight out of the first book. Many of these were word-for-word. There's a few new ideas, but this really should have been marketed as a 2nd edition of "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner" than as her second book.

In fairness to Christine, I have to say that the content of the book is still great. I just wish it wasn't a near replica of the first!

Owners of a home who dream of owning a second home for vacation purposes might have thought of the possibility as a dream for the rich, but Profit From Your Vacation Home Dream: The Complete Guide To A Savvy Financial And Emotional Investment tells otherwise: it holds the potential of being a wise move on several fronts, and provides the basics on how such a home can pay for itself when not in use by its owners. From how to rent a vacation home to a formula for successful vacation home ownership, this tells how to evaluate properties, weigh pros and cons, determine what's needed to break even on the investment, and even how to work with property management companies.

This book is as weak as the last book. Unfortunately, my wife bought both of her books without reading the reviews. Big mistake...
I read the book and it was basically a re-hash of her old book. It looks like she has quite a marketing arm behind her now though, as she is working for one of the big vacation rental websites now. Go figure. I guess they are making her publish the same junk, but with their spin on it. I also noticed that all of the super positive reviews for this book seem pretty fake and contrived. Watch out!

This book gave me a wealth of information when I was struggling to find the best airplane, for me. I really appreciated the fact, that they were unbiased in their reports and reported, honestly, any drawbacks that different models of aircraft might possess. I have used many different reference books, over the years and nothing even comes close to matching Aviation Consumer.

The Real Guide

Unfortunately this is not the book it is supposed to be. You are much better off with the more thorough, more useful older edition. This edition has none of the helpful information of its predecessor, and although prices are not current in the old version, the information is relevant. This is a simple, safe review of a long list of aircraft. It lacks the truth and some basic information a buyer needs - # built, versions built, NTSB safety records, thorough information on mods., useful owner comments, and much more. The Cost/Performance/Specs. sections are useless. I am truly disappointed. It's only plus is that it has more aircraft that the older edition - but more of something that does not help me still does not help me. Shame on Aviation Consumer for producing such a poor product after setting the standard with is older edition.

A very brief overview of several models of piston airplanes
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-03
I have owned, at various times, the third, sixth, seventh and eight edition of the Used Aircraft Guide. I don't remember much distinction between the sixth and seventh editions, the eighth edition is much better than the third.

The eighth edition cleans up some of the looser ends of its predecessors and the presentations are more orthogonal. Most major single and twin piston engine aircraft are covered and the format is a tech sheet showing the aircraft -- useful load, fuel, speed, basic dimensions and schematic profile -- followed by a summary of the model's history, quirks and foibles. Most models include pricing and all have at least a few owner stories.

What I don't like about the Used Aircraft Guide is the information is really a barebones summary. Make no mistake, Aviation Consumer is wonderful at being brutally honest, but the amount of coverage involved in all of these models necessitates that they be brief. They do provide pointers to type clubs, e.g., Cessna Pilot Association, Cherokee Pilots Association. These organizations would have far more experience with a particular model.

Although they've made some effort to incorporate new comments from the magazine's coverages -- notably on the Piper Archer and its maintenance pricing -- some of the owner contributions are often recycled from previous editions. For example, the Cessna 170 has an owner comment from someone who I *know* had a ten year hiatus for medical reasons.

Detracting from the usefulness of reviews is the fact that most owners eventually rationalize their decision to own a particular model. I know this will happen to me soon :-) The owner comments, on a macro level, tend to look favorably on any given model. You could almost generalize them as this:

---

I've owned my FrogMeister 172 for several years.

It's been a good plane and will carry a decent load over an acceptable distance for a modest amount of fuel. When I bought the plane, it had some problems, but because I take very good care of it, it's fine now.

I would recommend FrogMeister owners join the FrogMeister Appreciation Club for the latest information on modifications. The FAC has been very helpful in finding a mechanic who really knows the nuances and quirks of the FrogMeister.

Were I to purchase again, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a FrogMeister. However, I can't overemphasize the importance of an adequate pre-flight inspection.

---

If you've narrowed down prospective ownership to a couple of models, you would be better off buying the appropriate back-issues of Aviation Consumer and joining the type club for more specifics. (For example, I know the Cessna Pilot's Association publishes buyers guides for the 182 and 210.)

If, instead, you're interested in a general overview of lots of general aviation planes, then this is a fine book for that purpose.

To understand this book, requires you to understand the Aviation Consumer. It is a monthly magazine that is the avation equal of the Consumer Reports magazine. It reviews several topics per issue such as radios, headsets, flight rules and used airplane reports. These books are a collection of those reports. These two volumes are an excellent summary of the pros and cons of most of the fleet of general aviation. I think they are primarily aimed at a pilot who is trying to decide which airplane they are interested in, out of the great variety of models. So, using it for a first step resource, it is great. It describes basic flight characterstics, notable engine/equipment changes, etc. It does also list expensive AD notices. Once you have this info, you should contact airplane clubs for that model. And you should get a list of ADs, and calculate how expensive these might be to comply with. It is true that the page or two devoted to owners comments is rather hit or miss, with some very bland comments, while other pilots have been burned by their airplane choice. And in the 1994 edition, there isn't as many performance specs as I would like. Still, the book never sugar coats reviews, if a model is lacking, they say it. Overall, this book does a good job to describe the majority of light airplanes on the market. I have not found a better book.

This is an excellent book to read prior to buying a car. This book helped me to research the car I wanted to buy before going to the dealership by giving me helpful internet sites to find the invoice price on my car and other facts. It also instructed me on negotiating strategies to use when I sat down with the car salesman. True to the books description the salesman used the same tricks the book predicted he would. Highballing the initial price, stalling, stating he was going to lose money on the sale, bringing his boss in, etc. Reading this book allowed me not to be to eager and to be willing to leave if the salesman being cooperative on the price. This resulted in my purchasing a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid for $11 over the invoice price. I also bought my car insurance using one of the websites suggested by the book.

I have used this text in practice and in courses for a number of years. It is a very sound reference and it is easy to comprehend. Prof Blanchard's approach is excellent: based upon systems concepts and a lifecycle orientation. The content is very organized and methodical. The strengths are the system engineering process, the supportability analysis, and the bibliography. A very disciplined method for the system engineering process is presented. The elaboration on functional analysis and allocation is superb. All of the tools presented under the supportability analysis are relevant and very usable. In particular the emphasis and examples of life cycle cost analysis are excellent. The appendices provide practical and up to date data and information for the practicing logistician. Excellent reference for preparation for the Certified Professional Logistician examination.

While I like the "Systems Engineering and Analysis" of Blanchard, I'm not happy with "Logistic Eng and Mgt". This book aims toward the junior students, rather than the graduate level. While this book has long been published (up to 4th Ed. in my hand), only slightly improvement were made. Each chapter will guide you to the "introduction" of "what it is", not even the comprehensive definition nor foundation of Logistics system. If you are looking for the purely mathematic book, you will be very disappoint. If you look for the basic "engineer (as the title said)", you will not need this book. If you, however, look for a night time story book, you may like this one.

As a graduate logistics management student, I found this book very monotonous to read. Every three paragraphs reiterated what Dr. Blanchard stated three paragraphs previous. The concepts are great, and he leans heavily toward military applications. There are, however, some uniquenesses that military applications have that civilian industry does not.

As a professional military logistician, a good deal of the book was a restatement of the obvious. However, to a civilian graduate student with little logistics experience, this book would be very tough to swallow.

Three stars is probably generous.

This is about as basic a book as you will find on motorcycle mechanics without being too trivial to be of use. Plenty of pictures and diagrams for the visually-inclined. The troubleshooting section ("what do I do if the bike does this...?") is excellent. The book also covers the wider aspect of motorcycling like what to wear, what kinds of equipment you should carry on your bike, etc

Chilton's Motorcycle Handbook is a very good resource. It is, however, very broad in range and narrow in scope. Which is to say that a wide variety of topics are covered, but none of them are incredibly detailed. If you are in the market for a book on general motorcycling, I'd recommend The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Guide to Motorcycling Excellence. If, however, you want information on how and why your bike works as well as maintenance tips, there is no substitute for a shop manual or, if the shop manual is unavailable, a Clymer book for your model. This book would be of interest if you are interested in killing all those birds with one stone using a less adequate substitute.

A strange combination; better books are available

This book combines step-by-step repair and maintenance and troubleshooting sections with chapters on choosing a motorcycle (mainly a series of pictures of different bikes with short comments), choosing riding clothing, accessorizing your bike, and other miscellaneous topics. It's written in an opinionated first-person style. I found it somewhat superficial.

For learning how a motorcycle works, I would recommend "Motorcycle Basics Manual" published by Haynes; for repair step-by-steps, get the manual for your make of bike; for souping up your bike, "Sportbike Performance Handbook" is more informed and explains the why and how behind the conclusions; for riding wear and technique, I'd recommend Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling." After reading these, if you just have to read something else, this book is not bad.

This book, like all the other Chilton books I've purchased in the past, are informative and well illustrated. It contains many photographs, but often they are fuzzy or dark, and the parts shown are often not clearly depicted and not placed in context very well. It would help if you were already a mechanic, and knew the machine in question. Not an adequate book for the amateur trying to perform an appendectomy on the first try.

This one is no exception. It is a generic motorcycle book, and not specific to any particular motorcycle, but it is helpful and a lot cheaper than the Clymer books that do cover specific bikes and model years.

I think it is a book that everyone who has a bike should have in their library, for reference. ...

Every new motorcyclist should have this book

It's chock-full of information, with answers for all those "stupid" questions you're too embarassed to ask anybody else. Plus, great general info on basic repairs and maintenance.

Great book for summary of the CPM module knowledge base but there are flatly exam topics the book does not cover. I passed the 4 CPM Modules on the first try using this reference and the 2 available practice exams, Diagnostic Kits as they are called, from ISM (they are relatively affordable). The latter was exceptionally valuable in giving me a taste of the exam questions and the answers detail in the kits helped fill in several loose and missed topics in the The Purchasing and Supply Manager's Guide To The C.P.M. Exam. Good Luck.

Very good suplement for the CPM Exam.

I think it is an excellent book for the CPM exam but shouldn't be the only source to study. It definately gives idea about the exam and covers some topics to be prepeared but if you need more in debt information, have time and funds, it is better to get ISM Workbooks also.

I have both ISM Workbook modules and this book. I studied from both. ISM Workbooks covers more topics. I personally like to study in Starbucks, and on trips. If you had seen ISM Workbooks, they are not really much mobile. You can just throw this book in your laptop bag and go over some topics on your coffee break.

Shortly, I think it is a good purchase for CPM Exam, but "may" not be enough if you really need to fill some technical gaps in CPM exam materials.

Read it and passed the exams!

Wow- I love the book but especially the CD. I bought the book, took a couple days to cram, practiced on the test samples, took the actual exams over three days, and passed all.
Nothing can take the place of subject matter expertise, which is tough to get from one book, but this sure helped. There is NO WAY I would have passed without this as study aid.

Very Good Summary

This book provides a great study guide for the CPM exam. The book is divided into the 4 sections of the exam which allows you to focus on the necessary material. It also includes a CD with lots of sample exam questions you can use to practice.

Do not count on this as your single study source!

I bought this as an economical study reference. It is a great overview for key concepts but find additional sources to study by.

It took me failing the first test (after studing only from this book) to realize that the CPM exam answers are fomulated in a subjective manner. Many questions and answers are vauge and situational oriented. Questions are often worded as: choose the "most likely" or "least likely" answer, leaving 2 valid answers, the correct of which may depend on an organization's preference or even a buyer's experience!

The test seems to raise the difficulty by way intrepertation in an effort to ligitimize the CPM certification. The test is worded with such verbeage that I believe that it must have been written by a tenured government employee or mid level manager with a thesaurus.

As a purchasing professional with many years of experience, I found that most real world application and testing for certification in theory are quite different with occasional convergence.

The certification process will weed out the weak and I do take full responsibility for my first failure. Now that I know the rules of engagement, the battle is mine to be won.

Hats off to the authors for effectively simplifying a "complexable" (yes, I made that up!) subject.

It is a great reference and I will likely use it to train the buyers in our organization.

This book is good for a quick overview of some valuation methods, but I found it to be a little too simplified, although it's not bad for mom-and-pop retail and service businesses. If you are actually don't going to do the calculations and want more professional results, take a look at "Unlocking the Value of Your Business".

A decent book but

Provides a summary treatment of this subject, but a book I like better is "Unlocking the Value of Your Business", which seems to be more complete, but easy to use and understand.

This book wasn't bad, especially for the price, but there are better ones out there. ("The Upstart Guide to Buying, Valuing and Selling Your Business" for example.) About half the book is special situations or special types of companies, which is great if you happen to be one of those but not if you aren't. This book did cover the basics of business valuation, but I actually found it more useful for looking at the value of a business as a tool to improve its operations.

Recommended highly, but for persons with a strong background in Accounting, Business and Finance. Not for the beginner. A Harvard Education helps..
