Old Stories about Old Books in the Old WorldReview Date: 2008-04-22
Although I love "Books About Books";I ,like the majority of those who love books and reading ,know very little ,nor have had the experience of searching for, buying and selling Antiquarian books and Ephermera. While never part of that world,I found this book about it, a delightful read.
To the authors of this book,it was their whole life. They not only had the experiences they tell us about;but also made a successful career of it and made their living at it. They are no longer with us; Leona Rostenberg passed away on March 17,2005 at the age of 96,while Madeleine Stern passed away on August 18,2007 at the age of 95.They spent their entire adult lives living and working together. The world of books and their friendship were everything to them.
This book is mainly comprised of the journals they kept of their trips to England and Europe during the years after WWII ,from 1947 to 1957.
Their descriptions of what things were like after the destruction and hardships of recovery after the war are as much of what this book is about as the rare books they are able o find.Of course,as in any endeavor, the people you meet and the friendships that develop along the way,are what most enjoyments of pursuits are all about.
It is amazing ,the amount of 15th -18th Century books that were available ,for what seems today like pittance. The books they find, and talk about are virtually unknown to me,and very shortly after being found ended up in special collections in libraries, universities and with wealthy collectors. The experiences of the authors lasted for only a decade or so .That was the time when money was hard to find, collections all over Europe had been plundered, scattered about, and great rareties could be found in many bookstores. All that soon ended, when word got around and hords of dealers started to started to swarm the continent and these sorts of gems were scooped up and rapidely skyrocked in price.Where real treadures could be found for the price of a meal or less, they soon became available at a "King's Ransom";if at all.
A wonderful read ,for Bibliophiles and book buyers;from the novice to the astute Antiquarian.

Thorough treatment of multi-echelon,multi-indenture models.Review Date: 1999-06-24
The book is written for the logistician who is concerned with the achievement of the required operational availability of systems, and whose main objective and responsibility is to make decisions related to inventory items, item location and investment in spares. The optimization methodology developed considers trade-offs between stock at the operating locations and supporting depots (also called the multi-echelon problems), and between stock levels for an item and its sub-items (also called the multi-indenture problems). All models developed are on an analytical nature, which provides the decision-maker with an efficient tool for the determination of optimal stockage policies.
The philosophical concepts of the book are addressed in Chapter 1, followed by the corresponding mathematical techniques in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 covers the mathematics related to the joint optimization of stock levels at operating and stockage/supporting bases. The estimation of demand rates that do not stay constant is considered in Chapter 4, where the negative binomial is used as a model, together with models that are based on the Poisson distribution (variance-to-mean ratios equal to one). The mathematics for a multi-echelon, multi-indenture optimization are developed in Chapter 5. The problem concerning periodic resupply for repairable items is addressed in Chapters 6 and 7. The associated concept is subsequently illustrated through an example application related to the Space Station Freedom. The main subject of Chapter 8 is the cannibalization problem and the associated mathematics. The last chapter, Chapter 9, of the textbook is dedicated to practical real-world problems relating to modeling and application of models, where both advantages and disadvantages are analyzed.
Undoubtedly, a book of of such great integrity deserves a place on the shelf or any person, library, or organization whose interests lie in the domain of inventory theory and its application to complex systems.

A well written A to Z of OutsourcingReview Date: 2001-11-05
J Brian Heywood's book about outsourcing is a comprehensive look at the topic from the perspective of both the client considering outsourcing as a way to improve their competitiveness and the outsourcing service provider. Both types of organisations will gain an invaluable insight into the outsourcing world. The book gives sound advice and backs up the advice with loads of actual examples. The author explains how outsourcing, if handled correctly, has the potential to produce real tangible saving for all types of organisations, not just large ones. He also explains how outsourcing arrangements can fail and what clients and service providers should do to limit their risks of failure.
The book answers the questions:
· Why outsource?
· What are the benefits of outsourcing?
· Which functions should an organisation should consider outsourcing?
· What are the alternatives to full outsourcing?
· How does an organisation choose an outsourcing service provider?
The author argues the case for a `Business Satellite' approach to outsourcing where the client and the service provider establish a separate organisation that is jointly owned so both can share in the future benefits generated from the outsourcing agreement.
I would say that this book is a must read for any organisation looking for ways to improve their competitiveness in today's market.
