Geez, the management folks at VW are a bunch of arrogant bastards - much like the folks at Ford, GM and Daimler Chrysler. This book is a great history and a really interesting and enjoyable read.

I'm an avid VW driver, and when I saw this book I had to read it. It's great! The VW story is incredible, I never would have guessed that there was so much interesting history there.

The references to the advertising brought back some good memories. I remember each ad and how great they were.

A dfinite must read!

I'm a die hard VW loyalist now. So when I saw this book I had to see what it was all about. Incredible story! Very well written!

It was incredible to read about all the things that went on within and without the company, it helps to understand the car a lot better :) If you're at all interested in VW's or car company history in general, this is a must read.

This is a top of the line book. It takes the reader through the history of Volkswagon in America. It speaks of the successes and failures and takes the reader behind the scenes to see how the company was/is run. Due to the history of Volkswagon, the book is entertaining and hard to put down. Kiley does a wonderful job of telling the facts in an interesting way. At times though, it does focus a lot on advertising which is both interesting and tedious. Although it can be hard to keep all the dates and people straight throughout the book, the experience of reading the book is fantastic. This is a great book for those who know a lot about cars and for those who are just merely curious.

I really enjoyed this book. The author obviously knows her way around Volkswagens. I'm so glad she made Daisy use the bible of Volkswagens - John Muir's "Idiot's Guide".

This was a cute love story, and an awesome story about a gal and her Beetle, but how many 15-yr-olds enjoy this? My critical eye says this book is too romancy for boys, and too technical for a lot of girls (Not all, however. There are those of us females who are mechanically-minded). As a 20-something VW enthusiast, however, I thought the book was fabulous.

Very good book!

I really enjoyed this book. It had everything from Volkswagons to love and it really showed that girls CAN be mechanics and that cars aren't just for guys. The author did a really great job describing how a fifteen year old acts and what it feels like to be in one's first real romance.

Daisy Pandolfi, the main character had strong will and tons of determination. She knew what she wanted, which was a 57' purple Volkswagon that had been her dads and was being neglected in the icehouse in their meadow. After Daisy begged her dad to let her have the Volksie, he finally gave in and she recieved the barely fixable old car. Daisy fixed it up all by herself without help from her family, all of whom are excellent mechanics. This book was really enjoyable and I reccomend it to everyone!

this was a great book, this is the first book i have read in a long time my dad asked if it was good and i said yes and he said it must be becuase i never read and i never put this one down. I found this book after asking the librarian what some good books are and he handed me this book i thought it was going to be dumb but it wasnt. This book is about a 15 year old girl who is becoming a freshmen and doesnt have a car everyone in her family are mechanics and she wants to rebuild her dads old puple VW bug and he doesnt think it is a great idea because it had been sitting in their ice house for so long but he gave in and let her take it out and work on it she spent her whole summer working on this car but then when the school year starts she and her friend billy take it out for a spin and something happens and there is oil everywhere and she doesnt know whats wrong and she doesnt want anyhelp from anyone so she finaly lets Billy look at it and he finds out that their is a crack in her crankcase and she will have to get a new one so for christmas her parents buy her a new one and the car is fine and runs so on christmas eve after church Billy comes over and she gives him the bug on loan till she turns 16 because when Billy was little his dad left them and doesnt send money so he cant go to college and works at his moms garden shop for christmas to sell trees. This was a great book and i would like to read more of her books...

This is the first book i have read in a long time my dad asked if it was good because he hasent seen me ever not put a book down i love this author and i am looking for more books by her. This book is about a young 15 year old girl who wants her dads old puple vw bug that he has put in the there ice house she works on it all summer and gets it up to shape to drive the one day her and her friend billy are driving it and and the find oil all over the ground she finds out later that there is a split in the crank case and it will have to be replaced so for christmas her parents and her buy a new one so now the beetle is all fine. Her friend Billy has graduated and doesnt have a car to drive and is in love with Daisy and wants to marry her but she doesnt know if she feels the same way and as a present the him she gives him the beetle on loan till she is 16 and can drive it, this is how the book ends and i am kinda wanting there to be another book after this one but thats just me.

The Bug Called Love

Review Date: 2002-01-24
In simple, straightforward language, Karen Romano Young unfolds how a seemingly awkward yet strong and determined heroine comes to terms with her dreams, her family, and herself. Daisy Pandolfi is a believable heroine who makes no excuses for wanting what she wants. She doggedly restores their old VW Bug and discovers heartbreak, disappointment, and love in the process. Her strength was an inspiration to me -- and I'm 23! I wish I was like that when I was 15.

The book is a love story, true, but not in the mushy line of commercial teen flicks. The romance aspect develops slowly, surely, imperfectly. But at the heart of it all was how Daisy tackled her independence. In a quiet exchange that moved me to tears, Daisy tells her father not to tell her what to do, just to tell her when she's doing it wrong. In the end, it IS a love story -- of a girl for her dreams, of a girl for her family.

I sincerely enjoyed the different characters that Karen Romano Young painted in this book, and I look forward to reading her other works.

A friend shared this book with me on a recent trip to Maine, where I typically "escape" to re-capture the core of my being. As I read, I "listened" to the writer's charmingly sophisticated, yet simple straight talk that recalls
reminiscent ideals for the ears of today's world.

Rick Roberts skillfully contrasts our current realities with the romance of his nostalgic "Grandpa's" values that are echoed in his chosen idyllic lifestyle in Maine. Likewise, each of us has a voice to cast as a glistening pebble skimming the pond. Our collective energy will then radiate peacefully with infinite resonance. The world will see. The world will hear. The world will be touched.

Our future generations are only as great as the exemplary ideals and legacies we, as role models, hand our children. Not just for "Boomers," this book is a must for parents, teachers, and all responsible adults.

Thank you, Rick!

Roberts heralds a wake-up call to look at what impact we can (and do) have on our world, now and for the future. Most importantly, he outlines what steps to take to make positive changes now. Whatever your politics or spiritual beliefs are you will find this book a fresh take on our world today. Run, don't walk to buy this book.

Someone has finally written the great American novel! Well, it's not exactly a novel...more like a cross between a Michael Moore script and an Andy Rooney commentary. Rick Roberts' book is a warm hearted, straight talkin' wake up call to baby boomers - this nation's biggest generation ever. We boomers gave birth to a Dream in the sixties; and now, he says, it's time to finish the job: it's time to start living that dream. All I can say is buy this book by the armloads and pass it out to all your friends. It's a rollicking, great read...and when you're done turning pages you can continue to use it as an alarm clock.

I couldn't put Rich Roberts' book down! No matter what your politics, religion, gender, or race, it'll hit a nerve in anyone who questions today's personal, professional, or political priorities. Each chapter is extremely relevant. Rich's 'baby boomer rantings' are insightful, well researched, and full of wonderful, though sardonic, humor. Starting with Chapter 1 I penciled "X's" next to my favorite passages only to find by the end of the book nearly every paragraph was "X'ed!"

What more can I say than this: I enjoyed the book so much that I bought 20 copies and gave them to my friends, who also say "it is a must read!"

Great Book, from concept 1 till 1.8T. Shame there are no pictures of the new beetle in different colours. Red an Grey are mainly used for the pictures which are from great quality. As I am not good in English ( I'm from Belgium ) the book was easy to read. I'm sure, if I have my new beetle I'll hug it (or her). One of the best car-books I've ever read. You can see that Matt Delorenzo (the author) really loves the new bug.

A non-enthusiast will enjoy the book and will likely become a full-time enthusiast by reading. VW-fanatics won't be disappointed. Plenty of R&D-type stuff in here to keep you interested. Also neat that the publisher put the book out with four different colors--one for each of the most popular beetle colors!

I haven't gotten into the more detailed aspects of auto repair, but the Bentley manual is very very good to say the least. At times, the illustrations can be a little difficult, but it's much easier once you compare it with the car and know what you're looking at. This manual covers damn near anything you could ever think to do to a VW Fox, and has been a big help so far.

I recently purchased a used 03 Passat and love it. I drove my younger cousins in the car and they managed to make the backseat ashtray, that is supposed to fold nicely into the center console, unable to catch and stay closed. We had originally ordered this manual to help offset the cost of having the oil changed by a mechanic, but we were able to read and know exactly how to fix the ashtray and save an $80 visit to the dealer.

The step by step instuctions in this book are easy enough for anyone to be able to do minor maintenance by themselves. It is absolutly necessary if you want to do a decent job of maintaining your car without taking it to the dealer every 5k miles. It's written with the average driver in mind and will teach you a lot about your car. I recommend it if you're interested in keeping your Passat in tip-top shape.

I bought this along with the Actron code scanner...they work great together. The book has a list of all the codes (including manufacturer specific codes) with definitions for all of them.

As someone who is accustomed to do it yourself car repairs and domestic service manuals, I was completely impressed with the quality of this book.

No fuzzy black and white photos. Full of detailed exploded view drawings and very detailed and deliberate instruction. It leaves very little to the imagination, but that is the point.

In 6 weeks this book has saved me $600 in timing belt replacement labor and $200 in CV Joint boot replacement.

So much information, start marking the pages early or you may find yourself thumbing through the 2k pages looking for that exact diagram you know you saw.

I bought the other VW Trends Beetle restoration book and returned it. Very disappointing. This one, on the other hand, is terrific!

I have a '73 Super Beetle and plan to use this book to guide me through several projects I am planning.

When I saw the first article used in the book in a VW Trends magazine on the news stand I tried to get a subscription beginning with that issue because, if I remember correctly, they wanted about $10 for a back issue!!! I called to see about getting a subscription starting with the news stand issue and got the runaround about not being able to choose the first issue of a subscription. So I emailed them. After more than six weeks I finally received a reply. By then I was so pi**ed off I blew them off.

When I saw the book come out I looked it over and was very pleased because it would have cost a small fortune to get the back issues of the magazine with the same articles.

Anyway, even though I haven't used the book for an actual restoration yet, from the reading I've done it appears that the author has done an excellent job of documenting the steps he went through while restoring his own VW Super Beetle.

Very interesting, but wish photos weren't all B&W

Having just bought my first Super Beetle, I thought this book would be a good place to see what it takes to restore one. The step-by-step descriptions and numerous photos are great, but the photos would have been more helpful if they had been in color. In some sections, it's difficult to see what parts are being referred to. But I am not a mechanic, and don't have any experience working on cars, so this probably wouldn't be a problem for someone who's accustomed to what they're looking at in the engine compartment and underside.

An excellent guide to restore your Beetle!

If you followed the restoration of Ryan Price's 1971 Super Beetle in VWT, then you know what this book is all about. The Volkswagen Super Beetle Handbook is a Restoration Guide for 1971-1974 Models that is made up of the articles that were published in VW Trends magazine under the name of Super Project '71. Those articles were a turning point for the magazine and made it more popular than ever. No longer was the Super Beetle being shunned, instead it was being featured. Super Beetle owners worldwide rejoiced.

More than just a collection of articles, this guide is packed with pictures and information that cannot be found anywhere else. You can learn from one of the best on how to take your Super Beetle from basket case to show stopper with ease. Chapters include Initial Inspection and Evaluation, and all the way up to Installing Exterior Body Parts and Trim. Once you get to that point, you're finished! I've seen people searching on The Samba to find missing issues just to get all of these articles, but now you can get them all in one slick package. This really is a must have for any Super Beetle owner!

An outstanding account of the history of the Beetle, from the time of it's inception as the People's Car, to the decissions on what to do with the car and the plant which produced it. Mr. Ludvigsen provides an incredibly detailed account of the Beetle and the automobile of the '20s and '30s that influenced it and the world. A must read for history buffs and fans of the auto industry.

As with all of Mr. Ludvigsen's works, "Battle for the Beetle" is expertly researched and elegantly written.

The book is notable for its collection of historic photographs, detailing not only the evolution of the Beetle itself, but also many other rear-engined automobile development efforts from the same time period. While Mr. Ludvigsen certainly delivers on the political intrigue promised by his book's title, he also does a wonderful job of helping us understand the societal context which caused the rear-engine movement to come into being; in this way the Beetle as a technological artifact is placed into its proper intellectual ecosystem, a more interesting viewpoint than the more common "design genius" mythology build up around its creator, Professor Porsche.

In fact, this is no mere buff book, but an important work in the study of society and technology and how complex technological artifacts come into being.

But don't get me wrong -- if you love cars, and especially if you love Beetles, read this book!
