The funniest cartoons ever!Review Date: 2008-07-18
The first 48 pages contain Larsen's standard (quirky and bizarre by others) cartoon art. For example, the boss is shaking hands with a client and says, "OK, Johnson--we've got a deal. We'll let your people and my people work out the details." Standing around each man is a little circle of little people with their little briefcases, just waiting for an assignment. (I wish this were possible.)
However, the focus of this book is the Wiener Dog Art located in the middle of the book (centerfolds)? The first is "Cave Art" and features the Wooly Dachshund on the wall of a cave in Southern France. "The B_____ of Paradise" is created after the Rubens School and features four mighty hefty Dachshunds lolling in the fresh air.
A favorite is "Wiener Dog with Head Turned" by Pablo Picasso(?). The artist has disassembled the parts of the dog's head and reassembled them to present the look he seeks. Another favorite is "The Persistence of Wiener Dogs" by Salvador Dali(?), although the painting is signed Labrador Dali. You will recognize the painting by its draping dogs over bare tree limbs.
A final example is "The Whine" by Edvard Munch(?). You know the painting: a dachshund stands on a bridge with his paws to his head, screaming. Colors swirl around him. All sorts of meanings are attached to this painting.
The rest of the book contains more delightful Larsen cartoons as humor. This book is filled with humor, laughs, and hours of entertainment. Highly recommended.
Far Side of the Wiener DogReview Date: 2006-04-21
Gary Larson has always been one of the most imaginative cartoonists of any era. This collection contains more than 180 Gary Larson illustrations that, as with all Gary Larson collections, run from subtle puns to bizarre perspectives. How about Wharf Cows scampering the ropes that tie ships to docks? Or perhaps a scene from Giraffes IV, where they are out for more than acacia leaves?
If there is a drawback to this collection, it is that the two volume set "The Complete Far Side 1080 - 1994" is a more cost effective way to buy all of Gary Larson's cartoons. Unfortunately for me, I already have six or eight or perhaps more Gary Larson collections already. Maybe I'll just keep on buying them. I know I keep reading them. Enjoy!

Excellent guide.... a page turner!Review Date: 2006-09-04
"Marketing to Moviegoers" is an incredible way to get insight on all aspects of the film marketing process: from creative ad campaigns, test screenings, media buying strategies, product placement, merchandising and getting to know the distribution strategies for both big studios and independents.
Rather than a how-to manual, Robert Marich compiles numerous examples and case studies, in an enticing and easy to read format (using indsutry charts and graphics), that allowed me to understand what to expect when producing, promoting and distributing my film in a few days.
I think this book, with its broad coverage of the movie industry and its practices is a great compliment to "The Complete Independent Movie Marketing Handbook", because the latter focuses more on step-by-step recommendations on how to get your movie packaged and sold.

Book On Movie Marketing Touches Every BaseReview Date: 2006-02-21
As the book gives a thorough rundown of the fields of marketing research, media advertising, promotional tie-ins, merchandising, publicity and distribution it carefully notes the opportunities and pitfalls of assorted game plans. Chronicles of standard industry practices are interlaced with boom or bust investment tales. It is especially skillful in coping with the constant changes of new technologies. On the subject of the Internet, for example, the various advances and retreats, strategies and counter strategies are duly recorded.
"Marketing for Moviegoers" bolsters its points with numerous charts and examples of recent movies. While this book's primary appeal will be to those in the trade its inside story of the intense media battle for consumers' dollars should have the attention of some just plain moviegoers.

I asked her what clicked in her life to propel her from where she was to where she is now (which I am sure is only somewhere on the way to where she plans on ending up)? Jennifer mentioned that she had read some enlightened books. I was hoping she'd say something like that so that I could go out and buy it! But, recently it came to me that she already had it! And, as soon as she stopped believing what other people said she couldn't do, she did it!
Now I have an enlightened book, yours! This a great book, great story. The techniques can be used by both women and men; personally or professionally. It's like magic, the moment the light comes on. Thanks for the inspiration.

Free yourself from lies that control your lifeReview Date: 2003-02-11
Have you come to accept any of the following lies as truth? The Doomesday Lie says that if nothing ever changes then what is the point of trying? The Stressor Lie says that you have no control over what happens to you. The Perfecto Lie says that you have to do things perfectly the first time so don't try anything new. The Scarcity Lie says that you should hoard what you have and never enjoy them because they may not be there tomorrow. The Satisfaction Lie says that you shouldn't ask others for anything but settle for what you can do yourself. The Experteaser Lie says that you should not trust yourself or your opinion but rely on other experts. The Yardstick Lie says that you have to measure up to how other people measure you. The Stuck-in-the-mud Lie says that you should be so busy helping others that you are unable to live your own life. The Clairvoyant Lie says that people should know how you feel and respond appropriately without your telling them. The Assumption Lie says that you can make assumptions about other people even if you don't know them. The Sandman Lie says that you should just relax and accept everything and give up trying to change anything. The Worrywart Lie says that you should worry about every little detail of what might possibly happen no matter how remote the possibility.
If any of those descriptions sound familiar to you, if any of them describe you, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. The authors provide a clear, workable path to free yourself from the power of these lies and put yourself back in control of your life. The format is not only designed for the individual reader but is also excellent for small discussion groups. It is a highly recommended read.

The Runaway Pumpkin Rolls Over With DelightReview Date: 2007-10-23
The pumpkin rolls down a hill and right through town.
Round and 'round across the ground
Makin a thumpin' bumpin' sound
Came that thumpety bumpety thumpin' bumpin'
Round and Rolly Runaway Pumpkin
The pumpkin knocks over Momma Baxter and Grandpa Baxter. It is just about to mow down Poppa Baxter when Dad comes up with an idea to make a pumpkin bed and cleverly catches the pumpkin.
Throughout the story, each Baxter family member has designs on things they would like to do or make with a pumpkin (pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup). In the end, Grandma Baxter makes all of the family members favorite pumpkin recipe and the centerpiece contains the rest of the huge pumpkin, nicely carved into a jack-o-lantern.

Rosenthal's notes are dead on and she writes with a style that makes the most mundane things humorous. Sort of a Seinfeld for parents, except as parents you'll really understand what she's talking about. You may even get a little absolution from the book - for example, in a list of confessions she admits she has let sucking the toothpaste off a toothbrush pass as "brushing". Having kids myself, I can completely understand and picture that situation...
Great stuff...it was a perfect stocking stuffer. Guys, this would be a great book to surprise your wife with for no reason.

When the kids were toddlers and I was tired and feeling swamped and
cranky, it helped remind me what was important and what was not. My
kids are in 8th, 6th and 4th
grade now and life is busy and fun. I
pulled your book off of the shelf to find a quote for a friend and found
myself
re-reading many of the stories. Your book centers me and sort of
re-sets my attitude toward parenting. Your stories are
concise and
insightful; I appreciate your sense of family and fun. Just wanted to
say thanks for the times when your
book has helped me.

Rembember that children are independt beings who need your support and guidance, not your control. Be open to what they came to teach you and both will benefit in ways which no words can precisely define, since they will take you to the world of the spirit.
The author makes sure that every parent who reads this book mustr a clear understanding that feeling love is not enough you MUST express it.

By Melody Beattie, Bob Greene, Edgar Guest,
Harvey Mackay, Pat Riley, and many
more
Stories, motivational excerpts
Chicken Soup for the Soul is a fantastic, true book with hundreds of stories inside
all about people's real live experiences. The sections covered in here are about love, kindness, parents and parenting, teaching
and learning, death and dying, matter of perspective, overcoming obstacles, and elective wisdom. Everyone and anyone who reads
this book can find stories that they can relate to, while enjoying them. Happiness and sorrow is merely a speck of all the
emotions felt throughout this amazing book. When reading this you are able to learn the different kinds of situations there
are and the everyday people who go through them. This book is extraordinary and unique; how it slams real life into your face
and shows exactly how unpredictable life can be. It also shows us how we should value those around us, for we do not know
when it is anyone's time to go.
All of the characters are real people who have gone through an event and have decided to
share it with us. Each story has a beginning, middle, and end to it; just like life. Their stories are there to help others
or to send a powerful message across that has once touched them. Each and every story is unique, interesting, and 100% true.
So be prepared for any kind of emotions, because in real life you don't always know what the outcome will be.
The stories
in Chicken Soup for the Soul are all directly from those who experienced the story. They are all easy to understand and follow.
The voice in each story is so strong that it actually feels as though the person is right there telling you their story; it's
unbelievable! Though not all stories may be your type or make you feel comfortable, just skip them and move on to those that
interest you more. There is something for everyone in this original book. After reading Chicken Soup for the Soul you will
be able to truly see how precious life really is.

Another Paul Watkins book you can't put downReview Date: 2002-03-07
Watkins' BestReview Date: 2002-05-01
Watkins writes with a grueling sensitivity that is unparalleled. He writes realistically of the hard, dirty, unrelentingly difficult life of a fisherman with a sensitive hand but without maudlin sympathy. Watkins' succinct writing style adds to the tone. You get to know his main character without really understanding him. Indeed, it is clear he does not understand himself. It would be unfair for the reader to do so.
A book of dreams clashing with reality - a place we have all been, especially when youth is meeting adulthood. This is a book you truly will not be able to put down.

A Big-Time Wake-Up CallReview Date: 2005-03-19
Henry is a thinker, dreamer, inveterate tinkerer and creative type. In another life, he could have been Michaelangelo. What he ISN'T, however, is an author. Until now. And that's my point.
What Henry 's done here is what he's urging you to do. To step forward, get out of your comfort zone and do something new, different and challenging. To rekindle your inherent spirit to create. These are the threads that we, as Americans, have been pulling forward since our nation was born. But as Henry points out, they've become frazzled
in recent years and good ol' Yankee ingenuity isn't what is used to be.
I was in the meeting when a client asked us to take a "Safe risk". I'm a writer and simply walked away shaking my head over its inherent lunacy. I never thought about writing a book. Henry, an art director, used it as the thesis for his book.
I told you he was smart.
Balancing economic reality with creative mandateReview Date: 2005-03-11
What happens when bean counters are given carte blanche to reorganize an activity that is essentially a product of creative thought?
The short term answer is obviously greater profits but at what cost? Every member of a board of directors should read this book. It explores the real cost of sacrificing everything to the great profit Moloch.
Perhaps long term corporate prosperity is better served by open communication within the company and this would perforce include those pesky creative types and their expensive ideas.
Clearly Disney was a uncompromising mavarick genius who risked everything to acheive an ideal. Shouldn't we be looking for the same attributes in our corporate leaders?
Well written and interesting.
Caroselli makes a statementReview Date: 2005-05-14
This highly readable and anecdotal observation by a talented and seasoned business professional defines the type of leadership that is critically needed in business today.
The business of America is business. And American business must continue to be innovative and idea-driven business. Idea generation involves seeking excellence through open-mindedness, vision, and tenacity. As the author explores the courage and cost of being an true innovator, he concludes that anyone can engage in a more free associative approach in the search for innovation and become an innovator himself.
Caroselli encourages readers to initiate lasting and real results by sticking to the essence of their vision while searching for innovative approaches to problem solving and effective execution.
Caroselli is accurate in observing that business managers often toss aside good ideas in favor of the easy sell. It will always be tempting to pay "lip service" to innovation and just "manage the work" rather than "make something happen."
It is significant that Caroselli recognizes that the Chinese and Euro markets are growing too quickly to be ignored. To maintain out standard of living as North Americans, we will be compelled to revisit the kind of Yankee ingenuity and idea generation that made this nation whatit is and to assure that our prosperity can continue.
A highly recommended read for any business person- management, creative or, optimally, a person who is both.
Well written, articulate, and accurate Review Date: 2005-05-06
The book is written in a very entertaining and casual way to make the points feel close to home. Bravo Mr. Caroselli!!
Excellent, Important Book -- and Publisher's Weekly Review Proves Author's PointReview Date: 2005-07-25
What I need to comment on is Publisher's Weekly hatchet job "review," which fails to disclose a key fact necessary for any reader to judge that review's credibility: The publisher of Publisher's Weekly, Reed Business Information, is also the publisher of several entertainment industry trade publications such as Variety, Daily Variety, Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News, etc. etc. As any subscriber to these publications can see on a daily basis (and I am such a subscriber), Disney is one of Reed Business Information's larger advertisers and customers. Shouldn't a credible journalist or reviewer reveal such an important business relationship to the reader? Shouldn't the reader who comes to Amazon for information about a book be informed that the "Editorial Review" is not written, as most customers would assume, by an impartial reviewer, but by a reviewer in business with the company that is the highly displeased subject of the book? Isn't that usually the way journalists and reviewers behave -- disclose their conflicts of interest, rather than hide them?
Caroselli describes artfully within Disney the "don't tell the truth, just tell the toppers what they want to hear" type of communication that is so antithetical to the innovation and creativity that was once Disney's hallmark. Is Publishers Weekly and its parent, Reed Business, guilty of the same in its "review?" Hard to say for sure. But it's easy to say that ANY reviewer worthy of that name should disclose its conflicts. The failure to do so here illustrates just how important Caroselli's message is for corporate America.
So let me make my own disclosure: I met the author once, at a conference I organized about the harmful effects media consolidation and concentration have on creative artists. He asked me to read his manuscript and I was so impressed that I was honored when he asked me to write a jacket blurb. Now, that disclosure wasn't so painful or difficult, was it, Publishers Weekly?
Read the book. Decide for yourself. You won't regret it.
