Great work...some witches do hoodoo too!Review Date: 2008-08-28
I bought it for the entertainment value and the irony since people think if you are a witch, you must be hexing people. Buy it for a lark if you are a pagan or witch then put it on the table next time one of your more liberal yet not pagan friends comes over, gauge their reaction, you will see their eyes go to it! :) I wouldn't recommend this at work or with people who wouldn't get the joke or the stereotype, even through there is a parody of the Wicked Witch of the West on the cover. Go figure. I assume the publishing house wanted to try to cash in on the Wicked reference, I hope that did them good.
Yet even if you wanted to do the hexes here, they are seated in research and my copy is right next to my copy of Yronwode's hoodoo book and they seem quite at home together on my shelf.
Could be worse, but it's not HoodooReview Date: 2008-09-19
I will say that, like Stephanie Rose Bird and Ray Malbrough, Morrision has Neo-paganized/Wiccanized the Hoodoo/Conjure tradition to make it more saleable to the Neo-pagan masses, and in doing so made it no longer Hoodoo/Conjure. A few examples of this are:
* A discussion for those concerned with the Wiccan Rede and Three-fold Law in the first chapter. While it is an intelligent dicussion neither of these are of concern to those who practice this tradition as they don't exist within Hoodoo. Hoodoo doesn't come with a built-in set of ethics so they are going to vary greatly from one practitioner to the next, and a person's ethics are their own business.
*Using terminology from European witchcraft to describe Conjure practices. For instance, what she calls a poppet should rightly be called a "doll-baby" or a "dollie". She also seems to prefer the word "hexing" to "crossing" or "crossing up" someone, terms that are more often used in Hoodoo/Conjure.
*Wiccan-style spells created with Hoodoo parts. This is all over this book. I see few spells that reflect the Hoodoo tradition despite the fact that they include curios found in Hoodoo. For instance, in none of the cleansing spells is the practitioner's first morning's urine included at part of the bath when doing so is almost a universal practice within the tradition. Nor does she advise the reader that a magical/spiritual bath must be taken before the sun rises and the water tossed eastward as the sun rises.
*Another important aspect in Hoodoo is the use of numbers with 3,7,9, and 13 being highly favored and even numbers hardly ever used as they are considered stable and stagnant. This book contains recipes with as few as 2 ingredients.
* Morrison has completely removed all traces of Christianity from the tradition, and instead added in the Norse Runes and inclusion of curios related to the spirits of Regla de Ocha (Santeria), among other things. None of this has any place in Hoodoo, which is deeply rooted in Christian symbolism and belief. I will say that, Morrison is completely correct when she states that Hoodoo isn't a religion, but she fails to acknowledge that it is still a very spiritual tradition that is deeply connected with Christianity to the point they are inseparable. Spells are often closed with "In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" or "In Jesus Name" Likewise, in Latin-based areas of the country the Catholic saints are often worked with.
*I haven't completely analyzed all the spells given in this book, but I have seen several that included ingredients that have me scratching my head. For instance, her War Water contains no iron!!! Nobody would make War Water without iron, that's just a waste of water. Why do a commanding/controlling spell and not include Devil Shoestring, which just about any practitioner would. She gives a recipe for a Love Potion #9, but doesn't include any rose petals in it. Likewise, no practitioner would include Myrhh in any of this type of work because is it considered a holy incense. She also seems to place zero emphasis on personal concerns, especially, those of the target. For instance, her "Condom Spell" to stop sexual harassment is useless unless the condom contains the semen of the target.
My last criticism is for the bibliography itself. Out of the 32 works cited, there is only one book, Hoodoo and Voodoo by Jim Haskins, that is decent and relates directly to Hoodoo. The other books deal with Afro-Carribean religion, European witchcraft, Morrison's own works, or are other Neo-Paganized/Wiccanized Hoodoo books, like Malbrough's "Hoodoo Mysteries" an Stephanie Rose Bird's "Four Seasons of Mojo" and "Stick, Stones, Roots, and Bones". Where is the reputatable stuff like Cat Yronwode's Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic reference text, Pow-wows or the Long Lost Friend by George Hohman, Henri Gamache's Master Book of Candle-burning, The Black Pullet, The Secrets of the Psalms by Godfrey Selig, The Key of Solomon the King, or the 6th and 7th Books of Moses?
In closing, I feel I have to cut Morrison some slack on this book. Clearly, she's not a practitioner of Hoodoo/Conjure and her target audience are not Conjurers either. I don't think it is possible for any Neo-Pagan author to write a truly authentic book on Hoodoo and have any success in selling it to the general Neo-Pagan community so we end up with books like this. It isn't a bad book, but it's not a book about Hoodoo/Conjure so please don't make the mistake of purchasing this book thinking you will learn, or will be practicing, authentic Hoodoo because you won't be. If you can accept it as another generic form of magic and use it as such you may have good results.

Enjoyable story of a friendship spanning across several decades of American historyReview Date: 2008-05-22
Jillian and Lesley were both born in 1948, and so they were teenagers in the 1960s, when they struggled to make sense of issues going in their world going on at that time, namely Vietnam. Throughout the book, Macomber does a nice job of working in historical events. Vietnam figures heavily into the plot, but other events, such as the American Legion convention and the advent of the computer age, affect the characters as well. Sometimes these inclusions were a bit predictable or even contrived (eg, one letter contained the postscript "my land, what is the world coming to that people are tainting headache pills with cyanide?"), but even so, they added interest to the story.
This was the first book I read by Debbie Macomber, but it won't be the last. Although this book is likely to appeal mainly to women, Macomber injects a genuineness and warmth into her story that goes beyond "chick lit," and I look forward to discovering what else she has to offer.

An Enjoyable Story of the Value of Friendship Review Date: 2006-12-31
Lesley grew up the oldest of 6 kids in a working class family. Her dad spent more time out of work than he did employeed, and her mom had to learn to live with him and all his faults. Jillian, the only child of Judge and his wife, grew up in the lap of luxary. And yet, through time and completely different circumstances, they stayed friends. This book encompasses decades in the lives of the 2 friends, through marriage, children, divorce, death and war. At times a little sappy and at times very touching, I found this book very enjoyable.

Joy to read this bookReview Date: 2002-07-11
However, there are a few things I would like to clear up, which I found inaccurate or inappropriate. The Jackie Wilson episode I found rather distasteful, particularly since he is not around to defend himself(it was o.k. to slander Al Green). Also, as I had to do with Gladys in her book, I need to clarify a few inaccurate points you raised in your book. In reading your relationship with Atlantic Records in the 1960's, one is left with the impression your group wasn't given a fair shot due to the success of Aretha. Well, that's not totally true, since you were with the label two years before she signed on. It just wasn't your time yet! Now is your time. You sound greater and look more beautiful than ever. You have a wonderful spirit in which people adore you far and near. You are truly a blessing. Wonderful job.

wonderful stories presented in a wonderful mannerReview Date: 2008-06-17
He shows us by examples rather than telling us. His stories of neighbors and family are as heartwarming as the front cover of a porch with rocking chairs promises. He references Bible passages but not in every story, and in a manner that is easy to relate to. His humor and wit are evident throughout and gives the reader the feeling that Gulley would be just the person to sit next to in those rockers and listen to for hours on a summer night.
If you are in the need for a pick-me-up, quick and easy read, I highly recommend this book.

Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards Rock!!!Review Date: 2008-09-27

Beautiful Cards, Disappointing GuidebookReview Date: 2007-12-16
I have found images on the cards lovely and quite worthy of ritual use. However, the guidebook is written purely as an oracle deck. For each card it has a message and possible interpretations, but only a few sentences per card about the Goddess herself.
As an oracle is useful, but as a healing type oracle rather than a descriptive one. The interpretations are largely suggestions to improve a particular energy flow, rather than a description of current or future situations. For example, some interpretations are "slow, steady progress is best right now", "make time to rest", and "release guilt about receiving". I'm not saying this is good or bad, just pointing out that it is quite different from a tarot type oracle.

Beautiful, accurate and inspiring oracle cardsReview Date: 2008-04-06
I've tried one of her oracle cards and several by other authors, but Doreen's Goddess Guidance cards are by far the most beautiful, accurate and inspiring I've ever come across. And I've also found this deck at the right time when I'm getting into Goddess spirituality more. Goddesses seem to resonate with me probably because I'm a woman and also because they're more human, less intimidating and less mythical than other archetypes. I am in the process of reclaiming my feminine power, which is not the same as power in the masculine sense or in the negative connotation of the word.
These cards I found have been the most accurate and useful oracle cards I've ever tried for myself. They seem to speak to me directly and are in tune with who I am and where I am in my life. I find that I get very helpful guidance and insight about myself and about other people that is just so right on. I really do feel like I'm getting clear and correct messages from the Universe when I use these cards.
I also like that Goddesses from different cultures around the world are represented. There are, of course, more of the more well-known Western Goddesses and there are lots of Celtic goddesses in the deck. But it's nice to see Pele and some other Polynesian as well as Egyptian and Asian Goddesses. I'm surprised not to see that many Graeco-Roman Goddesses, though. I would have like to see more of those. I'm also a little surprised to see Guinevere and Isolt as Goddesses, I don't think I would have ever thought of them as such until I saw them included in this deck. It's great to see Mother Mary and Mary Magdelene as well. Being a New Age Catholic, I like being able to integrate my religion of origin with my current, more eclectic and wider-ranging beliefs.
All in all, I am very happy with The Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards. The artwork by different artists is just amazingly beautiful, and there are so many messages that you can find in each one. The cover artwork of the Goddess Dana is what originally drew me to this deck. It really captures the essence of a strong, grand, beautiful, powerful and serene Goddess. The gilt edges on the card make the deck feel very sacred, which they are. The words on the cards and in the guidebook are very positive and nurturing as well. I intend on using these oracle cards for years to come.

Essential reading for entrepreneursReview Date: 2004-12-03
Romanus takes his years of experience working with literally hundreds of individuals and companies and boils it down to the essentials.
This isn't your average business book - it is a series of worksheets and activities to help you define, refine, and act. If you've never owned a business, but have always dreamed of breaking out on your own - this book is for you. If you've been in a startup before, and are thinking about trying it again regardless of your previous success, you'll still find a lot of helpful information to help you avoid the mistakes and pitfalls of too many startups.
Also -- if you get a chance, I highly recommend attending one of Romanus' events. He is energetic and provides great information. Its not just a rah-rah, motivational session -- you'll find it very valuable.

I must have checked out every book in my local library when I was thinking about starting my own business, and I read them all. When I checked out this one, however, I immediately went to the Amazon site and ordered my own copy to keep.
Oh, and my business is doing quite well, thank you. :)

Shelby from Lake Tapps says: A Thriller BookReview Date: 2007-03-14
The book the New Years Party written by R.L Stein was a thriller book. This book mostly takes place at a party, school and many more. This is the best book I've ever read.
A Thriller book
This book is mostly about a couple of people who hang out with the new girl and her brother who seem nice. So they start to show her around. Then they get in a fight later in the story. One person from the group of girls tries to not be in a fight with the new girl anymore. The ending I thought was kind of scary and exciting at the same time. What happened I didn't expect it at all.
Exciting
This book had some pretty gross moments. I would recommend that you don't read this book during the night because you might have night mares. I loved this book because it kept you wanting to turn the page. For example when they we're in the restaurant, they went outside and found a body in the trash can. I loved it so much. Another reason I liked it is because when you would stop reading it for 10 minutes, you want to pick it back up and keep reading it. I also thought that the front of the book looked interesting and scary. I thought I would read it because I like scary books and if you do then this book is perfect for you.
Nice but Not Nice
Something else I'd like you to know about this book is that the beginning is kind of boring but the middle of the book and the end are great. If you decided to read this book then hears something you should hear just because someone seems nice doesn't mean that they stay nice.
Good or Bad
I would give this book 1 millon star if I could but since I can't I would give this book 5 stars. I loved it so much. I hope you read it and enjoy it as much as I did.
