A Must Read Book

I own this book and have read it over 10 times. It's a great story and kids can have fun reading it, and they learn about American history without knowing it, too!

Karen and her family take a trip to Plymouth Plantation which is a place where people can learn about pilgrims and how they lived. Not only can the tourists learn about it, but they feel as though they're actually in a real pilgrim village! There are actors and actresses who pretend to be pilgrims and native americans(indians).

This is a book that kids can read over and over again(as I have done) and still not get bored with it. With each time that you read it, you learn a little more and it's still interesting! All in all, this is a must read book.

A refreshing look at the Mayflower landing takes the shape of the voyage itself from the perspective of a sailor. The author was a sailor and describes the ship, the navigation and the voyage from the first sighting of land to the final anchoring in Massachusetts Bay. The book is very well researched.

"Maggie's choice" takes place in a time when people held church services in barns, and the pators didn't even plan the sermon. Maggie Allerson is different from her friendsl Dancy and Susannah. Dancy has a lot of money and Susanah has a huge house and a lot of servants. Maggie has to do chores and have Latin lessons, and she's embarrassed about that. Maggie is always worried what Susanah will think of a girl like her and she always tries to please Susanah. On Christmas, Susanah gets her own slave girl and mistreats her. Melee (the servant girl) is so used to the warm climate of her old home in the West Indies that she becomes very sick. When Melee gets sick, Maggie realizes that Susanah is not nice and starts to stand up for her own beliefs. I liked this book because Maggie was so real it seeemed like I was sitting in the stagecoach on my way to Massachusetts. If you like books about history, this book is for you!

Excellent for Thematic Lesson regarding Pilgrims

This book gives a brief description of how the Pilgrims came from England to Holland and across the Atlantic to the New World. I used this in my curriculum to help implement my Social Studies Theme about the New World. It brought in historical events and people and the trials that these people experienced coming to the new land. My students enjoyed the book both independently and as a whole class instruction. It was a great tool for developing vocabulary as well. I recommend this book for any 5th grade teacher teaching the history of the Pilgrims.

The Real Story of the Pilgrims
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-04
The pilgrims in America was predated by Martin Luther and John Calvin in the early 1500s. It says but doesn't spoonfeed that Catholic was like 1,000 years out of date, leading to Luther's founding of Protestant. The pilgrims started in like the 1580s or 1590s, landing on The Mayflower, my ancestors in the like 1623. Only 100 and some survived that first winter, but they deliberatly had tons of kids together to keep it going. Those indians who weren't killed were kixed with the mostly French pilgrims, my ancestors- you needed SOME indian blood in you to adapt to the polar to tropical climates of the New World in America. So I'm a trade Indian. Very few generationals of those pilgrims who landed on The Mayflower survive today nearly 600 years later, but those who do are treated like royalty. The first edition in 1974 still hasn't sold out on this booklet, so get it while you can to learn the story of your ancestors' founding of Plymouth colony in present day Plymouth, Massachussets and Jamestown, Pennsylvania. Those whites who migrated to the South are still around today, but thrown up as horror and gothic icons, their repoutations and history tarnished by yesterday's wannabe goths looking to exploit their look and image for "star" purposes, to put it that way. But I see still the real thing every now and then...

The collaborative effort of the Plimoth Plantation, authors Peter Arenstam, John Kemp, and Catherine O'Neill Grace, and photographers Sisse Brimberg and Cotton Coulson, Mayflower 1620: A New Look At A Pilgrim Voyage is a superb picture book retelling of history for young people, about the voyage of the Mayflower ship and the lives of the colonists who braved hardship for a new future. Gorgeous, full-color photographs capture reenactments of how life aboard the Mayflower was like, and the down-to-earth text presents the events of history in detail. An enthusiastically recommended and enthralling educational read, Mayflower 1620 is ideal for young readers seeking to broaden and improve their knowledge of American colonial history as well as their basic reading skills.

Like a reference book on the Mayflower but readable too

If you want information about the Mayflower passengers, this is the best book for that I have seen. It is not a history of the Pilgrims but rather a series of about 50 biographies on all the Mayflower families, each bio is anywhere between 1 to 20 pages. It is full of names and dates and places like a reference book but still reads like biographies making it interesting to genealogists and history buffs both. Very detailed and well researched and lots of endnotes.

The series is well-researched and well-documented. It has an index which allows researchers to locate their family and gives the original source; it is best used in conjunction with "Vital Records of (town), Massachusetts to 1850."
