A great introduction to economics, but leaves some questions unanswered
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-25
A great introduction to mainstream free market economics, making an easy and humorous read of complex subjects, including just what the Chinese did to spark their remarkable growth in recent years.

Makes a great case for the so-called Washington Consensus (free markets, low taxes, balanced budgets), but does not tackle the reservations about it now gaining ground. In particular, says nothing about the truly frightening growth of economic inequality in the US, which many attribute to unthinking endorsements of global "free markets" that aren't really free, and whose benefits seem to accrue only to those at the very top. I would love to see a sequel by Harford that took on these questions.

Astrologer's "must have"_ quixotic inconjunct made clear!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-29
BUY THIS BOOK, if you want to help yourself and your clients manage this aspect's pressures away from the imbalances wrought through indecision, and in the direction of pragmatic life choices. Serendipitously, from the shelves of a local used bookstore in its Weiser Publications incarnation; Epstein's book appeared in my life to simply and thoroughly explain the energetic principles of the two faces of the inconjunct: semi-sextile & quincunx. The importance of the inconjunct is mistakenly under represented in the wider astrological literature. As the quincunx appears no less than seven times in my chart; I have a deep emotional and experiential grasp of the extreme angst that this "ideal vs real" polarity can bring to personal expression in comtemporary Western society. The seed of sanity that Epstein's clear exposition presented, harvested as great peace. Once missplaced, I looked all over for a copy, and am now gratefully repurchasing this irreplaceable treasure in its Trines resurrection!

Nat Dallinger, like Mr. Garrett, was a longtime photographer of the Hollywood scene in the olden days, and this book assembles many of his finest shots of the classic-era stars at work and play. The oversize format allows for superb reproduction, often in full page form, of the B&W photos. Great nostalgia documentary in book form!

REVIEWED BY: Gayle Jacobson-Huset, Managing Editor

What a clever and darling book! I thought it would be about math problems, but it's really a sneaky alphabet book that shows children 26 different ways about how they are seeing and using numbers every day. The kid-fun illustrations by Vicky Enright contain more numbers for your kids to find. The authors wrote this book to teach children just how important numbers are in their lives. I give this book a high five for fun while learning, and for challenging kids to come up with thoughts and ideas on more ways they use numbers daily.

This team of fun authors and illustrator has two companion books out - "Read Anything Good Lately?" and "Written Anything Good Lately?" I laughed out loud when I saw the illustration on Page 18 for "O" Is For "Order Number". The mother and daughter in the illustration are holding a copy of "Read Anything Good Lately?" while ordering "Written Anything Good Lately?" on their computer screen. Hmmm, sneaky alphabet book AND a sneaky marketing trick as well, ladies! And it worked! I now must read your entire clever series. Congratulations on a book well done.

Truly a treasure map for the reader! Even if the book did not necessarily give a favorable review of the different book stores,it was a blast to seek some of these shops out. The main drawback to this book is it becomes dated when a tiny bookstore doesn't make it and shuts down. But I've been to some of the shops that ARE still open and loved them all! I was also able to find books that are waaayyy out of print. If you are looking for ignorant used book sellers to sell you a 1st edition "Gone With the Wind" forget it. Most book sellers in this manual are savvy when it comes to the trade. When I retire from my real world job and open my book store in 14 years, I hope to be listed in this book. Please keep revising and printing this one!

Most used book I have
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-20
I bought this book brand new back in 1998 and 7 years later I do believe this is the most used book that I own. Its getting rather raggedy with countless bookmarks throughout. Helped me get the first car I ever owned back then and has helped with numerous others since then. The newer used car books just pale in comparrison I feel. The layout is much better than the new ones that came after with each car getting half a page and not just a paragraph that begins on one page and ends on another. Only gripes is that they don't cover all the cars. No MR2s, any Porsche's, etc..

The best 'Used Car' book I've found... ~c:)

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It not only does a thorough overview of many different makes and models of cars and reviews things like 'overall buy', 'crash testing', etc. But it also gives a 10 point check on how to check out a used car to see if it worth taking to a AAA Diagnostic before getting the diagnostic.

If you want to save hundreds / thousands of dollars on future repairs, this is the book to get!
