I read this in Chinese ten years ago when I was in College. I loved it. This is one of a few books I have read more than
once. My personally opinion is that the first Chinese author who is awarded the Nobel prize should have been the one who
writes the stories about the Culture Revolution. And Zhang Xianliang is the one. Before and during the Cultural Revolution
Zhang was convicted as an "anti-revolutionary-revisionist" because of his family background and his writing that was not favored
by the government. Between 1958 and 1979, Zhang was imprisoned several times and forced to work in labor camps to "reform"
himself. Most of his novels are based on his own experiences in the labor camps where his soul and body were tortured.
The novel pictures both beautiful and ugly sides of human nature during the most extreme condition in the Chaos of the Culture
Revolution. In this and other works, Zhang speculated that the entire intellectual community in China was emasculated in
that period.
Getting Used to Dying is narrated by two voices which belong to the same person. It juxtaposes the encounter of death and suffering in the labor camps on the one hand, and sexual relationships and self-indulgence afterward on the other. The beginning of the book can be a little bit confusing. My attention was fully drawn by reading from the middle part of the book. The writing is very good in Chinese. Hopefully the translation of English will be as good too. Although my favorite is this one, I also recommend the other book from the same author, Half of Man is Woman, which is more famous in China.

I loved this book. It's a great & touching account, told from a child's point of view, of a child who has to get used to
a new stepfather. Almost against her will, she comes to like the irresistable Harry. A few heartwarming scenes of a mother
& a new husband in love. Great.

Laura Simms will entice you with her beautiful and dramatic voice and quickly pull you into her fascinating, spiritual and
enlightening stories. The entire family should turn off the TV and listen to these tapes. Not only are they entertaining,
but anyone listening will gain wisdom at the same time. I believe these stories are not just for children, but for the entire
family. The kit includes beautiful cards and also an artistic poster illustrating one of the stories on the tapes. This
is really an amazing series.

Between the heyday of Sherlock Holmes in the 1890's and the early works of Agatha Christie in the 1920's, the English reading
public consumed lots of detective stories. Aside from Chesterton's tales, few remain in print today.
Broadview Press of Canada helps to fill in that gap with this appealingly modern novel from 1903. Though the author is a man--the prolific Tom Gallon--the detective is a woman. Bella Thorn is a strong-willed, self-reliant woman who, without benefit of family, must support herself. She has skills in a newfangled technology--the typewriter. She demonstrares her cool by unflinchingly typing a threatening sample message at her job interview. She thus wins a job among a pack of criminals who resemble villians from the Sherlock Holmes stories: con men willing to use violence to separate innocent fools from their money.
Bella realizes the scams and works to thwart them, and to preserve her job so that she can continue her efforts. Gallon's artistry lies in two amusing areas. First is his conception of the resourceful, independent woman; Bella very much fits early 21st century views of women and seems surprising for her own time. Second is Bella's use of the typewriter to abet her efforts. Her power derives from her mastery of a device that most find confusing. Reading about a time when the typewriter was mysterious is great fun for us who use a computer each day and barely recall typewriters.
The novel is episodic and fast-moving. Fans of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie will enjoy how Gallon fits his work into the detective genre and stretches the genre to include gender issues and the mystery of machines.

Geoffrey Glaister's "Encyclopedia of the book" is a resource that cannot afford to be out-of-print. It is so all-encompassing
as to cover all aspects of the book, from specific biographies of publishers, book designers, printers, et al, and histories
of the book's development from all angles. I cannot stress enough the need for a collector or book enthusiast to track down
this volume to include in their resource library. There is, and probably never will be, nothing like it.

The Glossary of Entomology is a must have for Entomologists and researchers working with insects. The book gives precise
definitions for words not found in a normal dictionary. The Glossary of Entomology can be compared to the Dictionary of Enotmology
but has more terms defined. This book is like having all of the glossaries to your favorite entomology books in one. A
Truly Great Book.
