I too suffered from crippling arthritis along with some bizarre food allergies. These problems came out of nowhere! After going from doctor to doctor I was told to take the anti inflammatory drugs and learn to live with arthritis. I found this book online and started immediatly. What a difference. After a few weeks I was free of pain and back to my old (not so old) self. I too lost weight, what a wonderful side effect! This was about 10 years ago. Buy this book and stick to it for a few weeks. No cheating! It's all great healthy food. What a difference it can make in your life.

This book is the only reason I am active and healthy today.

In my late 20's I was diagnosed with severe crippling rheumatoid arthritis and told to prepare for life in a wheelchair. For five years I was in constant pain in spite of daily medication. One day I found an early edition of this book and began the diet it describes. Within three weeks I was able to discontinue medication. As long as I stick to the diet I am still pain free. There is no sign of arthritis in my body. At age 52 I am more active and youthful than many women my age. I recommend that every arthritic read this book and try the diet. It gave me back my life and it might work for you, too.

I have been following the advice in this book for the past three weeks for a sore knee. I no longer take ibiprophen to control the pain { it didn't help much anyway } I also massage my knee with peanut oil which is an old Edgar Casey remedy for non-compliant clients. One or the other or both works.
The recipes are easy to follow. You get quite enough to eat with only fish and vegetables. And you lose weight. All my skirts pass the zipper test now { French Women Don't Get Fat }
I'mll thoroughly delighted with the book. I have looked for it for years and now it is mine.

Arthur starts a pet business

Review Date: 2004-11-06
A good lesson for all kids that eventually want a pet of some kind by teaching responsibility in owning a pet.

The story begins with Arthur secretly wanting a pet and waiting for the right moment to make the request to his parents. One evening at dinner his sister, D.W. announced that Arthur wanted a puppy.

After his parents considered the options of having a pet they made Arthur a deal that if he could show them he was responsible he could get a puppy. Arthur and D.W. were trying to come up with ways to prove this that night in her room. At the table D.W. had her cash register advising Arthur to get a job to pay back the seven dollars he owed her. The pictures in the book are detailed showing the items in her room, such as a dollhouse, toy duck and rocking horse.

For anyone that has watched any of the episodes of Arthur they know the dog is called Pal and a part of the show. The book is a nice story that has funny antics while watching pets, but shows how Arthur takes the business seriously and is rewarded in the end.

The entire family shares in all responsibilities as is demonstrated through out the book with them making decisions together on the dog and caring for the visiting pets. Arthur sticks with the business at hand through the week he is caring for the pets and accounts for all of them. When presented with the dilemma of how to show his parents he can handle responsibility, Arthur sets out to accomplish that task.

My six-year old at one time wanted a pet and loves Arthur's Pet Business. The book tackles the issues of caring for various pets by showing they need food, rest in their own sleeping sections, cleaning of their cages and plenty of fresh air by taking walks. Showing Arthur reading the dog care book and concern about Perky reinforces that having a pet is serious business.

What child hasn't asked for a pet at some point in their childhood. What an excellent way to teach responsibility. This book shows the parent how to test a child's readiness for responsibilities, while showing the young readers the perils and pitfalls of having one's own pet business, as well as the rewards, and entertaining us all in the meanwhile. Well done. It's also fun to look in all of Marc Brown's books and find the hidden names!

I am in awe of how Marc Brown has simplified the concept of responsibility, so that it may be understood by my two year old daughter.

My two year old daughter summed this book up by saying; " Arthur showed his mommy and daddy he can take care of everyone's pets now he can have Pal . In my eyes that says it all !

The author has sucessfully done what was intended . He communicated an important moral concept to a small child , what being responsible is and how doing things morally right can be fun and rewarding.

Keep up the good work Marc Brown you are helping me communicate important moral, social, family, and educational values to my daughter. Great Books and Characters

Humane, hilarious and horrifying

Mr Thomas is a very funny writer. He is also, unlike many of the characters we meet in his book, congenitally incapable of ignoring his conscience.

Thomas details various ambushes that he and his colleagues spring on politicians and members of the arms trade; his chutzpah in these is nothing less than inspiring.

Thomas' book was a real eye-opener, taking this reader into the shadowy and immoral world of international arms dealing, and revealing in great detail the myriad ways that embargoes and rules can be easily subverted by the trades' ethically barren players.

This book is one indication that, despite what you'd gather from much of the mainstream press, the Left is very much alive and kicking; humane and brimming with ideas.

Bribe Fairies

Mark Thomas is a very funny man, who coined the phrase I used for the heading of this review. Bribe Fairies are the ones who pay bribes to corrupt officials, not multinational companies of course. Thomas does political stand up, and can make the Revolution of 1688 sound hilarious. This book is not as funny as his comic monologues, but that's partly to do the nature of the subject, which is the sale of arms and instruments of torture and 'restraint'. The funniest sections are probably those where Thomas pretends to be a public relations consultant and interviews arms buyers and dealers, getting them to admit to corrupt practices and outright torture. He makes exposing these people seem quite easy, especially when he combines with school pupils who set up mock companies and buy all sorts of awful things, including a machine which is described by its producer as a nonlethal anti riot weapon, which rapidly throws hundreds of large stones about 300 m. 'Yeah right.' as they say. The difficulty is getting someone to do something about it. This book should be compulsory reading for every government official and politician in any country that claims to be a democracy. They won't of course, and that's the tragedy.

Great Political Analysis and Lots of Laughs!

Mark Thomas is a very funny, and super sardonic comedian. As an analyst of contemporary politics and world affairs, he is hard-hitting, acerbic, and joyously goofy as well. I saw him do a 45 minute comic analysis of the "War on Terror" last fall at the Kings Head in North London that was brilliantly funny and at the same time, decidedly good political analysis.
Mark has had a number of comedy/political shows on British Channel 4 where he regularly skewered, exposed and debunked politicians, institutions, and purveyors of injustice. He is part Michael Moore and part Joe Strummer, with a lot of Monty Python and a fair dose of silly knucklehead thrown in.
His book "As Used on the Famous Nelson Mandela" is politically astute and achingly funny, mostly at the same time. I laughed really hard at the sting operations of third world generals and arms brokers, was decidely torn by the story of the war in the western Sahara, and educated on contemporary British politics, EU trade laws, and the international arms trade for 300+ pages.
The book is selling really well in the UK, and would make great reading for US audiences, especially those with interests beyond those of Fox News. You will be blown out at the gaps in EU arms laws and sit in open mouthed wonder at what gets through their--ostensibly sensible--customs untouched. And the US is of course, much worse. When mainstream politicians talk of stopping the War on Terror, they evidently don't mean the arms trade. That would hurt their natural constituency, a point Mark Thomas shows us in a genuinely funny and entertaining way.
I wish Mark would come to this country and write a book hammering our political bosses. He has written a most engaging and educative expose. I couldn't put it down. Well except to eat now and then. Otherwise, I couldn't put it down.

This book is really cute. But it also is a new readers book with some favorite childhood characters. It rhymes which makes it so much easier for young readers to connect with and makes reading much easier. It's pretty cute - Papa Bear's honey is missing and after a myriad of mishaps, they discover he's the culprit! All rhyming throughout the entire book but it's quite entertaining. Very good book to get if you have a young reader at home. Highly recommend!

I purchased this book along with several other Berenstain Bears books because my grandsons have expressed an interest in the books that we had from when two of our sons were in elementary school. It's a great book and our 4 year old grandson just loves it when we read it to him. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young children or grandchildren. The children can relate to the things that the Berenstain Bears do.

My 4 year old son LOVES this book. It made him want to learn how to tell the time and he loves the rhyming words also. It's a great book to read together and for him to learn how to read by himself. This is definitely on my all-time fave books for preschool kids!

Telling time with the Bears

"The Berenstain Bears Catch the Bus" is another winner in the excellent series of children's books coauthored by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The series is about the Bear family: mom, dad, and the two cubs. In this volume, the two cubs oversleep -- will they miss the school bus?

The book contains enjoyable cartoony illustrations that are bright with soft, pastel colors. I especially love the Bear's whimsical house: a hollow tree with Victorian accents and lavender trim. The story is told in an appealing rhyme with simple vocabulary -- great for beginning readers. Example: "It is almost seven, as you can see. / All is quiet in the Bears' Home Sweet Tree."

An nice educational touch to this book is the fact that the Bears' story is accompanied by both traditional clockfaces and digital time displays throughout, thus helping young readers learn how to tell time in both formats. I bought the book for my five year old nephew, and he loved it. Highly recommended.

No more "I want to sleep".

This is a really useful book to get my four-year old out of bed every morning. A nice feature is that every page shows a dial and a digital clock, making it easy for the child to learn to tell time. The book also teaches my son that he might be late for school if he does not wake up on time. So now every morning I will read the book to him, and he will wake up smiling instead of whining "I want to sleep"!

I give a 4½ plus. This book is good to have as human service providers are gradually being replaced by digital ones and many enterprises are desperately searching for some loosely-coupled-yet-organized way of "running the show". The authors seem to have a deep knowledge of technology, standards and infrastructure, yet they focus on business benefits ahead of "strong-opinions".
As the boundaries between "proprietary development" and off-the-shelf systems are disappearing, "orchestration" of a variety of components becomes even more important.

A 'Must Have' book

Review Date: 2003-04-03
This book fills the gap between the paradigm of 'business processes/EAI' and the real system integration world. Provides a pragmatic yet general approach with plenty of examples using a commercialy available tool. In other words, it gives you the right balance between technology, methodology and business processes.
It also walks you through a comprehensive methodology that shows a level of maturity not seen in other books. It is not coincidence that the author is a pioneer in this field.
A must have if you need to 'orchestrate' business applications.

Great Compendium on how to leverage BPM technology
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-03
The book starts out with a high level overview of what technology allows today in terms of automating the orchestration of business services through executable business process models. It goes on to explain the architecture of the BPM tier (Hyper-Tier of IT). It actually describes a full-fledged Methodology to create Orchestrations with a real example. The methodology includes the estimate of the ROI of the projects being analyzed! After the Methodology Chapter, the authors get into substantial detail of the different components of an Orchestration Suite. Very Technical. Finally in the last chapter it all comes together from a technical perspective. It made me re-evaluate my judgement on BPM. I now know that Integration, Orchestration, Workflow need to be one and the same thing under a single process model. The book can be challenging for non-technical audiences after chapter 4. But Business People should not miss chapters 1 through 3.

EXCELLENT ANALYSIS OF THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN

Review Date: 1997-04-04
This is an excellent read for all those who are truly concernedwith the welfare of children. While the economy has greatly alteredthe roles of both men and women, the question is raised whether it should be allowed to alter the needs of young children. Penelope Leach intelligently presents the thesis that the needs of young children must be placed above all else. This is ever the more significant in light of the recent popular press attention regarding the critical development that is going on in the brain during the first three years of life. These first three years of life are so important that it only goes to underscore the author's plea that each child receive one on one "parenting" during this time to insure optimal growth. This is certainly not a popular notion today in light of the two-earner family, however, society must still measure the cost of ignoring what science is telling us is important. This is not a nostalgic throw-back to the days of Ozzie and Harriet but rather a realistic analysis of what we as a society cannot discount.

After the events of last September, I've gone back to comfort foods and looked for comforting books and entertainment. If your idea of true comfort is to settle deep into your sofa and read sweet stories from the heart, this book is just the ticket. I was expecting just a few light stories with simple friendship themes. What I got were inspiring tales from all types of authors who can reach to the heart of a good story and tell it well. I got this book for a long-term patient in a local hospital to cheer her up and ended up buying more editions as small gifts. Can't remember the last time a book made a good gift for so many different folks.
