The designer of the legend's own wordsReview Date: 2000-03-28
There aren't first-person accounts of dogfights or bombing attacks here; Horikoshi never participated in combat. Nor is there anything substantive here about the training of the pilots that flew those first Zeros and deserve a large amount of the credit for the victories the design produced in 1940-1942. Instead there is a meticulous recap of the decisions that went into building the plane, and the reader gets keen insight into how an aeronatical engineer must think in order to create a near-legendary design. After reading this book, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that if Imperial Japan of the 1930's had had better engine designs than the ones available to Mr. Horikoshi, the road from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay would have been longer and bloodier than it worked out to be.

Dated, but worthwhile for the Evo newbieReview Date: 2005-02-15
The Mitsubishi Evolution is a truly great performance car. Unlike some other cars with sporting pretensions, Mitsubishi treats this one very seriously - every single stage of the evolution of this car has enjoyed major improvements. True, many are of the subtle kind that only true enthusiasts would appreciate. For example, the VIII model swapped it's air conditioning brackets for aluminum ones - saving 30% of the weight of the former steel brackets. Dozens of detail changes like this over the lifetime of the car significantly reduce weight and increase strength. The VIII engine itself has also been improved over it's predecessor with changes to the forged connecting rods and pistons. Continuous improvement like this yields a truly serious performance car, and it's recording details like this that make for interesting reading in this very worthwhile book.
