The designer of the legend's own words

Review Date: 2000-03-28
For the cerebral military history and aviation history buff, it's hard to get a better book than this one. Mr. Horikoshi was the leader of the team that designed the famous Zero, the plane that scared the Allies silly for the couple of years around Pearl Harbor. The book focuses on what he knows best: the design of the plane, including its context in fighter plane designs of the pre-war years. Toward the end, there are some agonized comments about attempts to design successors to and modifications to the Zero after the Americans developed tactics and aircraft specifically to combat it. Combat results are described in only the most cursory way, so many military history buffs may be disappointed that the only deaths recounted in detail are those of test pilots. For those interested in the more cerebral side of military history -- the weapons systems, the economic and logistical problems, and so on -- there are few books as rewarding as this one.

There aren't first-person accounts of dogfights or bombing attacks here; Horikoshi never participated in combat. Nor is there anything substantive here about the training of the pilots that flew those first Zeros and deserve a large amount of the credit for the victories the design produced in 1940-1942. Instead there is a meticulous recap of the decisions that went into building the plane, and the reader gets keen insight into how an aeronatical engineer must think in order to create a near-legendary design. After reading this book, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that if Imperial Japan of the 1930's had had better engine designs than the ones available to Mr. Horikoshi, the road from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay would have been longer and bloodier than it worked out to be.

I tried to get a manual from Chilton, but they never had one for my model and year car. Thanks to the Haynes manual I can do most basic services on my car like brakes, belts, tune-ups. etc. and save money from taking it to the shop. The steps are easy to follow, but there could be more pictures. You also need to have above average mechanical skills to understand how to do many of the procedures.

When this book was published in 1970, it became the standard reference for everyone who wanted to know what a Mitsubishi Zero looked like. Still one of the most densely packed photograph-books about the Zero, it is now no longer available from its publisher, and one has to find it on the second hand market. As with all books in the Osprey/Aircam series -in the US published as Airco/Aircam- it is well worth searching for. One would hope that the publisher would consider a re-issue every 20 years or so, but until now that has not been the case. That is even more to be regretted as one consideres that the volume about the Zero was a volume 1, implying that they had more material and that a volume 2 was also considered.

Dated, but worthwhile for the Evo newbie

My EVO library continues to grow. My latest edition is a new book from Britain: "you and your Mitsubishi Evo". This book was published in Britain in December 2003. It covers all models thru the Evo VIII. Chapters cover the history of the car, how to buy one (very good information about what to look for in a used one), and some simple modifications.

The Mitsubishi Evolution is a truly great performance car. Unlike some other cars with sporting pretensions, Mitsubishi treats this one very seriously - every single stage of the evolution of this car has enjoyed major improvements. True, many are of the subtle kind that only true enthusiasts would appreciate. For example, the VIII model swapped it's air conditioning brackets for aluminum ones - saving 30% of the weight of the former steel brackets. Dozens of detail changes like this over the lifetime of the car significantly reduce weight and increase strength. The VIII engine itself has also been improved over it's predecessor with changes to the forged connecting rods and pistons. Continuous improvement like this yields a truly serious performance car, and it's recording details like this that make for interesting reading in this very worthwhile book.

This book is oriented to the EVO imported to the UK

Lavishly illustrated with color pictures on nearly every page, but there are only 160 pages, with large type and wide spacing. Easy to read, it gives a good background into the development of the Evo with plenty of info to help you improve and enjoy your Evo. Unfortunately, the book is oriented to Evos imported to Britain, which are different from those imported to the U.S. With that, nearly all of the suppliers of modifications for Evos listed at the back of the book are in the UK; not much use for those of us in the US.

Don't buy this book unless you are already an auto mechanic, and, in that case, you probably don't need this book. Simple procedures, like installing a radiator, are impossible to locate unless you go through it page by page. No references to "radiator", or "cooling system". Come on, Chilton, if you want this book to be used by the public, make it a lot for user friendly.

I bought this book because it also covers the Dodge Raider (which was made by Mitsubishi, it's the same as a Montero)and already had the Haynes Manual for the Raider -- which I was somewhat disappointed with. This manual will assist you in performing many repairs which the Haynes manual simply advises you to take to a repair shop. This is OK if you're not confident in your abilities or don't have the correct tools, but I needed guidance for more advanced repairs, and this is where the Chilton's manual excels. It has the common failing of trying to cover too many years, and this can make it somewhat confusing. I suggest purchasing this in addition to the Haynes manual, together they make a good guide to repairs on these vehicles.

Chilton's Mitsubishi Montero & Pickup Repair Manual
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-20
I purchased this book to assist my do-it-yourself repairs on my '94 Montero. With the exception of the wiring diagrams which are good, I find this book is poorly organized and lacks critical location information for many of the parts for my truck. There are exploded view drawings that attempt this, but in reality most books aren't going to display this well without a huge expense. This is the first Chilton's manual I've ever purchased, my choice has either been Haynes or the manufacturers shop manuals in the past. Since the book comes sealed (apparently for good reason), I had no way of knowing how poor it was. There is little or no troubleshooting tree, and when provided it is very basic. It would appear that they gathered information for as many years of Mitsu trucks (including Monteros) as possible and put it in this book. I was trying to fix two items on the truck, my seatbelt light stayed on, and coolant was leaking from engine. In this book found no separate subsection on the engine cooling system, it is instead included in pieces in the engine rebuilding section. The book also failed to help me indentify the location or component that was causing the seatbelt light to stay on. I finally called a Mitsubishi mechanic to find it.

Somewhat useful manual. Does dissapoint in the fact that on the issues you might really need help on, the book tells you it is too complicated and to take the car to the dealer. But the book does have some useful information.

I've almost worn this book out referring to it while modifying my Galant VR-4, which is essentially an Eclipse GSX in Galant trim with rear-wheel steering. When Haynes refers you to a dealer or other repair shop, it's for a good reason. There are easier and better ways to do some procedures, but for the most part this book is a great reference for anyone with even mild automotive repair experience. If you're doing an engine rebuild, get the Mitsubishi factory service manual since the Haynes book is incorrect in several places. Or get a rebuilt engine and save yourself a lot of time.

Author's Note

As the author of this book, I wanted to take a moment to respond to "Ed M." about the lack of information about the Dodge-sourced engine in non-turbo 2G DSMs. First, I do mention the 420A, and point out that Hahn Racecraft offers a turbo kit for it. It's a good kit, and if you're interested in turbocharging that particular engine, I highly recommend it. However, that is about the extent of the performance aftermarket for that particular powerplant, and as I explain in the book, for the price of the 420A turbo kit and installation, you could have sold your non-turbo Eclipse and purchased a turbo version which, even stock, offers as much power as the Stage 1 version of the HRC setup. I also wanted to point out a correction in my bio above: I have not been the editor of Honda Tuning for about five years, and wasn't even working for that magazine when the book was published. Repeated requests to change this information have gone unheeded by Amazon. Currently I am Road Test Editor at MyRide.com.

I bought this book based on the writeup which states it covers "all makes and models 90-99." The book does a good job covering the models with the turbocharged Mitsubishi 4363 motor, but that's it. It does not cover, at all, any of the earlier non turdo Mitsubishi engines or the later models with the Chrysler 420A engine.

Upgrading your Eclipse

The book outlines some basic ideas and principles for doing some aftermarket upgrades to 1G and 2G eclipses. It gives some good tips and some dos and don'ts, but it doesn't really go into detail. This book would be good for someone that really doesn't know anything about performance increases for an eclipse.

Only bad Haynes book I've seen

I own a dozen Haynes repair manuals and they're all great withthe exception of this one. It's written in far too general a mannerand is not for someone who couldn't probably figure it out on their own based on their previous automotive experience. If you own a Galant GSX or VR-4 (I have a VR-4), get the Eclipse book. It's far more detailed, is actually correct about some procedures where this book isn't, and the minor differences between the two vehicles is easy to sort out on your own. For example, I had to replace the heater core in my Galant VR-4. The Galant book was useless and I don't even recall seeing any pictures for this difficult and tedious procedure. However, using the Eclipse book, I was able to get the job done. I've made many minor and major modifications to my car ( ) and have used the Eclipse book as a reference for all of them. I recycled my Galant book. One warning about the Haynes Eclipse book -- if you're doing an engine overhaul, get the Mitsubishi factory service manual. Some of the specs in Haynes are incorrect, enough so to really mess something up. Save yourself some time and get a rebuilt engine ( ). Way easier.

Good for basic and intermediate repairs and maintenance

I had an 1989 Eagle Summit which was the equivalent of the Mitsubishi Mirage, and this book covered the general maintenance and the small couple of repairs I did on my own. I'm not sure how useful it would be if I needed to do something major, but it's got a ton of pictures and tells you exactly what tools you need for each job. My only beef is that it covers 5 different models through 10 model years but only has photos of 1988 models and parts. Usually I didn't need a photo of what I was working on because the text description was enough, but I would look for the manufacturer's manual if you need to do something major.
