Shems Friedlander takes you on a journey from the most basic logical way of living to the most insightful understanding of the ***meaning of life*** itself. I couldn't believe my own eyes (and mind) as to how clearly and simply I was comprehending the most complex subjects of humanity, all told with many absorbing tales, delivered with a mastery of astonishing ease.
Either the author is justly a genius, waiting to be discovered by the world, or he is truly moved by God to produce such a masterpiece, or perhaps both.
In any case, if you were given a choice to read one book this year, make it "When You Hear Hoofbeats Think of a Zebra" by Shems Fridlander.
Being an author myself, I will put my entire reputation on line for this book.
Enjoy and Understand.

Persian Cuisine, Traditional, Regional and Modern foodsReview Date: 2007-11-17

Yum!Review Date: 2006-11-12
Perhaps most importantly, the recipes are relatively easy to follow (even for me, who doesn't have tons of cooking experience) and are delicious! I've introduced friends to Persian cuisine using recipes in this book, with rave reviews! People unfamiliar with Persian food are often pleasantly surprised by the mouth-watering combinations of flavors found in these Persian dishes.
The index is helpful, with dish types, ingredients and names of dishes catalogued. Menu suggestions are also useful. I also enjoyed the section on foods served for special occasions, along with other explanations, photographs, and illustrations sprinkled throughout the book, which help give the dishes a cultural context.
In addition to the quality of the recipes, I'm also pleased with the quantity: this is the most comprehensive collection of recipes on Iranian cuisine that I have seen, combining traditional recipes along with regional and modern recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Persian cuisine, whether it's something you're already lucky enough to enjoy, or it's something new for you to try! "Nush-e jan!"
The only Persian cookbook you need!Review Date: 2006-08-28
Unlike earlier versions of this book, it is entirely in English. That was a bit disappointing, but due to the sheer size of the book, it's understandable.
The only thing I found a bit odd about this cookbook is an interesting, but not necessarily relevant, article about the history of wine drinking in Persian history. It's the kind of article that you'd read once, but doesn't necessarily belong in a book that will be so frequently-used as this cookbook. The article doesn't, as I would have expected, provide any advice for wine pairings, or really have much to do with cooking at all.
Other than that, this book is entirely useful. I expect it won't be long at all before many of the pages in my copy are covered in stains of saffron and cinnamon!

Great book on the history of the Rx-7 Review Date: 2008-06-28
The pictures and the explanation of the history behind this car are very detailed. Almost 200 high quality pages full of great pictures and information from the very history of the rotary motor to the prototype Rx-8. This book was written in 2001, so the Rx-8 was a fairly new idea. The book goes through and explains every rotary powered car Mazda produced and explains a bit about the motorsports aspect as well.
Like in some of the older reviews, They could have spent a little more time in the buyer's guide section. Even though they explained a lot of good points, there is much more to know before purchasing this car.
For any Rx-7 enthusiasts out there, I would recommend this book for their spare time (when they are not out driving).
First rate, GREAT information!Review Date: 2001-12-09
If you've read the Mazda RX-7: Sports Car Color History book, this book is along the same lines and format. Where the big difference lies is the non-US specific focus of the information; model changes and lineups for Japan, the US, and the UK are covered, along with TONS of color photographs, reproductions of ads, and more.
The information in the book is VERY well researched and extremely accurate, which is asking quite a lot due to the breadth of the subject.
This is a fine reference work on the history of the RX-7. The "newness" of the book is a plus, since it covers the newer 3rd generation cars that are only for sale in Japan as well as photos and information on the upcoming RX-8. This information is not in *any* of the other RX-7 books.

Lets you live in late Qajar Iran and know what life was likeReview Date: 2000-02-04
Let me first and foremost clarify that all that Mr. Mostofi wrote was from his memory. If you have an eye for bibliographies, you will not find it in these books (a set of 3 books). But, rest assured that what this book lacks in academic structure, it makes up for in the real picture of life it gives you of Persia at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Abdollah Mostofi was able to recall with astounding detail people's attitudes, children's folk songs which poked fun at the Shahs, street names, cultural mannerisms, the personality of the Kings, and the drastic changes that the twentieth century brought about in Iran.
My only criticism is that the title of the book should not have been literally translated from its Persian text. This book is a memoir; it is not a true history book - at least not in the academic context/meaning of the word. It is not an administrative history of the Qajar period, it is the life of a high ranking administrator (Mostofi, Judge, Ambassador, ...). But in all fairness, Abdollah Mostofi's life, his explanations of why major historical events during his life occurred, and how it impacted the people of Persia from the Shah down to the peasants, makes his work invaluable. Mostofi takes you through a past that most Iranians can't even relate to anymore. This is a great book of life, a life that will now live forever within the pages of Abdollah Mostofi's memoirs and the minds of all who read it.

Arberry also includes some notes (though a full addendum is really required to begin to grasp the layers of Rumi), which are helpful.
If you do like the modern interpretations, at least read Arberry first. Then you can make up your own interpretations before reading someone elses.

i totally recommend this along with other neo-classics of world-wide sufism: The Last Barrier, Living Presence, Among the Dervishes (and most anything from Octagon Press), The Essential Rumi.
