I bought this book so as to diagnose a problem with my transmission & torque converter. I found it to be pretty much useless. The pictures didn't show what I needed to see; the wiring diagrams weren't for the right year; the vacuum line diagrams for the vacuum lines that operate the hardware that actually puts the vehicle into 4wd were non-existent. If your jeep is stuck at the bottom of a hill somewhere due to the front drive line ripping the wires off the connector that goes to the neutral switch & back up lights don't look to this manual for help!

I found the information for a 1988 Jeep Cherokee to be vague, superficial, and many times, incorrect. This might be due to production changes in the 1988 year. In looking for information on automatic transmissions, ignition system, engine control computer, or transfer case dissasembly or repair, the book says that this is beyond the home mechanic. Well, few other repairs even require a book for anyone with reasonable experience. I believe they are copping out. It was not worth reading.

FSJ great for newbies, but get The FSM!

Not bad, but get the Factory repair service manual, which is more accurate. Some wire diagrams are different.. good for the newbie, but better get some advice first, like Always use Quadra-trac fluid
in Transfer case, never anything else, the Friction cones will not tolarate it, since it is a full time 4 wheel drive. ( from 73-79 borg -warner)

As a beginner in home car mechanics I found this book very helpful. It helped me already with understanding my Jeep Wagoneer '73 (V8, 360). And I used it to replace the powerbrake booster, the powersteering pressure line, rear suspencion leaves, door window, door lock and so on. New jobs are coming and this book wil help me, I sure...

Very basic information, good for the back yard mechanic but a shop manual would be much better for serious repairs. I bought the book for the shematics, which are virtually useless; easier to follow the wiring harness in the Jeep than the schematics in the book.

For all those weekend wrenchers, this book provides more than enough information to get the job done. No, you won't be able to disassemble your Jeep and reassemble it using this book--spend the hundred bucks for the shop manual if that's your dream. But for anyone who likes to keep their Jeep up and running and who hates [shop] dollars an hour, upwards, to have things like thermostats replaced, this is the book for you. Well worth the meager price.

Most common repairs are covered in this book and for [$$] or so it's SO much better than having nothing to go on. Except for the Jeep Factory Service Manual, this is the one I use most and recommend, although it doesn't cover everything. Your best bet is to get a few manuals like this, such as the Chilton manual, since it's helpful to have different perspectives on any job you're doing.

Cheap but bad book. May be it is good to have it, I would buy it anyway even now, as there is no cheap alternative for it. There is much false information in it, do not beleive it at all. I thought better of it. It is not as helpful as it could be.

These manuals have become fairly common. I bought it to help with some upcoming work on my Jeep. I have quite a bit of experience working on cars but none on this vehicle. I found that the manual has a lot of pictures and description of steps of work to perform but details of sticky situations, tools required and specs on clearances, tightening torques, adjustments, etc. are non-existent. These details are what makes a shop manual worth buying. Without this additional data, you cannot complete a job cirrectly in many cases. Haynes just doesn't offer that information.

for example nothing mentioned about the sunroof repair and the AC repair section must be expanded. However, it is a great reference for every JEEP owner.

Very good book to have if you work on your own vehicle. Problems are when you need details for the exact year vehicle your are working on. In other words; if you want to change out the radiator, the book will give you general info on what to do and a general picture of what it looks like, but instructions are not specific for the model year you are working on.

I bought this manual for my Grand Cherokee. I am extremely dissatisfied with it. What do you think you can expect from a book that covers 10 years worth of 3 different model vehicles? I have an earlier book for my regular Cherokee, and it has over 50 pages of electrical information! I can find out any wire, any connection, anywhere!! This book here - NO WAY! It gives me 2 small 5"x5" diagrams for the ENTIRE vehicle!!! Unless you are driving a vehicle that is one third Cherokee, one third Wagoneer, one third Grand, you are basically wasting your time...Stay away from this one...

This book covers way to many models.
It lacks detail and diagrams are tiny and inaccurate.
The index is terrible. There are topics covered that you do not find in the index. Be prepared to flip through the manual to find your topic-only to be disappointed by its content.
Troubleshooting? Very little.
This repair manual will frustrate you! Check out other manuals first. For the basics stick to your OEM manual

Review Date: 2003-09-02
This book is garbage, innacurate and misleading. Like frustration-then buy it. A jeep mechanic told me this book was a great source of customers for him. The Haynes book is no better. These companies just copy errors and inaccuracies from each other.
Another experienced mechanic called it propoganda, just enough truth so people can't tell what is lies. Maximum frustration. Example- just try to replace a front axle u joint using this books method. Their method works only on new cars. You won't be doing work on new under warranty cars. 5 year old cars rust. The Chilton new car methods in this book just don't work. This book will make you think repairs are simple, until you get half way into it and it just does not work.

A serious do-it-yourselfer better buy a factory service manual for his/her specific vehicle from Chrysler. It costs $90, however, non-factory service manual is a waste of money for most of buyers. You just don't find information that you need to repair your vehicle.

RE-build it yourself!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-07
Typical Chilton book, tells you everything about the car you could possibly want to know except the thing you're looking for. I recently bought an old (1988) Jeep Comanche; wanted to replace the speedometer cable...using this book I could replace the transmission, overhaul the engine, re-build the differential, but no where could I find any info on the speedometer. Line drawings are crude and difficult to interpret, photos are worse. The text is good and gives adequate instructions. When I go to grind the valves, I'll know how!

My Thoughts on Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-19
I love this book because I have traveled to most of the Ghost Towns talked about in this book. Some of the pictures are the same as ones that I photographed while there. I am doing a slide show for my children of the places we visited and it helps me label the pictures for them. It is hard to remember the names of places until I got this book. We were there about 35 years ago and at that time we used the book Stampede to Timberline by Muriel Wolle as a guide. We basically followed the Switzerland Trail and started out from Boulder. We met Jimmy Hubbard at Ward who was a firemen and brakeman on the Denver-RioGrande railroad who told us about the book Switzerland Trail of America which we bought from the author, Forest Crossen.

Good for picking out sites of interest.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-29
This book may have been the first gift my husband ever gave me, so I may be inclined to go easy on it. It is true that the book is outdated and that some of the sites and trails it describes have changed considerably since publication. We also found that the description of how to get to one of the ghost towns was inadequate--we happened on the remains of some buildings eventually, but that was sheer luck; we'd given up on finding the town and were headed back from our trip.
However, the book told us a lot about locations of potential interest, and we've had a lot of fun checking out places we never would have known about otherwise. It's nice to have older pictures to compare to what we see, and Brown offers great summaries of places we may want to learn more about.
I'd definitely recommend this book--just make sure you have supplemental information to avoid frustration while navigating.

Robert L. Brown is one of the pioneers of the rediscovery and the history of Colorado's Ghost Towns. While this book was written in the mid 60's and is woefully out of date as a current guide, it does offer a unique perspective because of it's age. You will find here photos of the way these towns looked at the time the book was originally published. As a student of Colorado history, I find these invaluable. Comparing the current state of these towns to Brown's photos and historical photos of these towns in their heydey allows you to appreciate their fragility and their rate of decline. Don't buy this book as a guide, but buy it for it's historical perspective.

I bought this book while on vacation in Colorado. Other reviewers suggest that it is out of date and certainly there are more explicit trail guides to this State but it's a great piece of nostalgia. I love the pictures of flatfender CJs when they were almost new and ghost towns before the weather took away many of the buildings. It sits alongside other vintage Jeep books in my house.

OLD, Archaic Data -Circa 1963-
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-13
Bobby Brown . . . in the summer of 1975 Mr. Brown's book was 12 years old, yet the data was still accurate and relevant. The deregulation of Gold in 1974 made a prospector out of me and many others. I was driven to pan tailings ponds, sleuce boxes, and every creek nearby to any minig activity. ...
Every weekend I took my family tent camping to the great Colorado outdoors, using Brown's neat book. We found apothecary bottles, gold, and tons of fun.
Since then, many 4X4 books have been written about jeep trails and Ghost Towns and their info, trails and data are up-to-date and accurate to a fault.
After more than 39 years, how many trails are obliterated? How many ghost towns are gone and how much of the data, four decades old is even accurate, or on the map any longer.
Mr. Brown, his book . . . and me too, are all really old now.
There comes a time when the new must prevail. The old is put aside for up to the minute, on time info. It is, after all, the age of IT, isn't it?
In it's day, Mr. Brown's book was the cat's meow. Yikes! Did I really use that old cliche? See what I mean?
You young people run the world now. Us old timers live for our memories; and Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns is a really nice memory. (Sigh) Nostalgia, ain't it great?
East Tin Cup, Russleville, Glory Hole, and many more . . . thanks Robert Brown! We love ya.
