The "CJ Only" Jeep Bible

I really enjoyed the writing style used throughout the book, but I had hoped that since the book had been updated in 1997 it would have some Jeep YJ and TJ information. If you read the print on the cover it specifically states "1941-1986 CJ". So don't believe an earlier review that says this book has "TJ" information, the letters "TJ" cannot be found in this book. If you have a CJ or are a Jeep afficianado then this book is for you.

Despite the generous humour found within, this is probably NOT the book you want to get if you need to find out particular data on your Jeep. The book seems to focus on common sense issues related to 4X4's in general, so it leaves much to be desired in terms of identifying axles, transmissions, transfer cases and the like. Oh yeah, there aren't any wiring diagrams included. I suppose the book was written on the premise that the reader should already know what s/he has in and around their Jeep...which, in a sense, kinda relegates the book to owner's manual status rather than being a bible on the subject. The Haynes manuals are much better.

Must Have for Owners of Old CJs

This is the book I go to for help first. It's filled with common sense troubleshooting tips. This book is geared towards the older CJs that use points and "old technology" engines. It is not a "how-to" for performance or trail build-ups, there are other books better for that. Yes, you still need factory manuals and/or Chilton's type manuals, but this one is best for the average Jeep CJ owner with an older model who needs simple help on everyday problems!

This is a great book if you are jsut getting into Jeepin, and don't really know (or understand) all the lingo or issues with building up your rig. It also gives you some great ideas for mods and the upgrade path to follow.

As with any current Jeep book that has been on the market for a while and has been reviewed for newer Jeep model information.....info on the newest Wrangler, the coil sprung TJ, is slim at best. Info on the Grand Cherokee almost non existent, except in the listing of OEM parts. Therefore it is only three stars for any YJ/TJ owner...As always, a great book for CJ owners!!! 5 stars for CJ readers.

"Many will recognize the name Jim Allen from past tech and adventure articles published in Four Wheeler. However, in the continued spirit of writing about what he knows and loves, Jim Allen recently published his second book about four Wheeling, this one called the 'Jeep 4x4 Performance Handbook.' Offering a little bit of history, friendly advice, and a whole heap of information about Jeep aftermarket upgrade options, Allen delivers information for both hardcore and beginner alike, in a style both will enjoy. Some of our favorite chapters focused on suspensions ("Long Legs"), tires and wheels ("Footprints in the Sand"), brakes ("Whoa Nellie!"), and electrical systems ("Zap Rap"). For anyone considering a Jeep buildup or who just plain loves Jeeps, this book, at $19.95, offers as much information about Jeeps as you'll ever find in one place."

This is a very thorough and easy to understand book. It is extremely well written. It covers more than the Jeep vehicles themselves, it also covers Jeep accessories and how to use them, as well as all the basics of four-wheelin'. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in Jeeps and their capabilities.

This was purchased as a gift for my father-in-law, as he is working on a restoration project. From my discussions with him, this guide has been a tremendous asset to him. There are a few instances where OEM part numbers are not used, but the guide is complete with wiring diagrams as well as schematics and awesome pictures to guide you through repairs and replacements.

A very comprehensive manual. I have worked on my various Jeeps dozens of times and have found this manual to be indespensible. Based on a complete tear down and reassembly of the Jeep vehicles that are discussed. An invaluable resource. Although I can buy it considerably cheaper down at the local parts store.

As always, Chiltons manuals are one of the best for reference to a vehicle. They are usually on the mark for information and "how to" things. This particular manual is a little weak on the V-8 304 CID engine and I believe that there are mis-prints throughout on the numbering and figures that are drawn out. The electrical diagrams are the best there are but I think that the identifying the part that you are looking at could use a little more detail. All in all, the Chiltons repair manuals remain the best.

What I like about this book is that it covers the history of Jeep as a business entity as well as a vehicle. Foster is a well-respected historian and he really did a fantastic job with this book. The photos alone are worth the price- including views inside the Jeep factory, plus unusual overseas Jeep models. The book has a wealth of pictures. This is without a doubt the best history of Jeep ever.

This is a complete history of Jeep from military vehicle concept to Grand Cherokee Limited. Foster has done the research to show us how a concept for a military vehicle transformed itself into a full range of vehicles that has endured for a half century. Foster takes us through the many companies that have owned Jeep, showing us their strengths as well as their weaknesses in developing the products and the brand. A great story of how a unique niche vehicle could grow and thrive by defining a market even before many knew the market existed!

These manuals have become fairly common. I bought it to help with some upcoming work on my Jeep. I have quite a bit of experience working on cars but none on this vehicle. I found that the manual has a lot of pictures and description of steps of work to perform but details of sticky situations, tools required and specs on clearances, tightening torques, adjustments, etc. are non-existent. These details are what makes a shop manual worth buying. Without this additional data, you cannot complete a job cirrectly in many cases. Haynes just doesn't offer that information.

In addition to the first reviewers comments; this book also omitted the optional Perkins diesel used in the 1960s in CJ-5s and CJ-6s. This engine was used domestically. The F-head is listed as standard in the 5/6, the V6 is listed as optional in the right years but no Perkins is listed. I can almost understand not including export engines, but it is sold as a standard catalog of the Jeeps that were built in Toledo as I understand it. Omitting options that are fairly well known among enthusiasts domestically and overseas keeps me from giving this book a better rating.

Haven't had time to look over everything else yet.

Good reference but definitely incomplete unless I've just missed some section somewhere, in which case I might give it four stars instead of three. But then the information isn't where it should have been included.

The book was good, but it did not cover all the jeeps :0(, I expected this to cover all the jeeps ever built, but it completely missed the 2.4 litre and 2.7 litre diesel CJ5's, CJ7's, & CJ8's that were built in Ohio for export.

I also felt that some jeeps did not get full coverage and some of the original sales brochures told you more about them.

A great piece of work, but should not be sold as covering every jeep ever built.

Finally a factual guide plus an excellent history

This book may or may not have been well researched. On page 81 a caption for a photograph reads "In 1990 Jeep introduced the Wrangler 'Saraha'." I know this to be untrue because I have the original factory window sticker for my 1988 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Other than that this book was a good read.

When are they going to update these books to include the historical irrival of the TJ??? Give me some royalties and I'll write the section myself!

On a serious note though... David Fetherston (the author) seems like a bystander (not a Jeep Fanatic),but I could be wrong.

The book is fairly detailed, short, sweet, with lotsa Jeep pictures. Big pictures, and big font type are traits this book carried to the extreme. I guess it was done that way for the older wartime guys/gals that still love Jeeps. (can you blame them?)

One of the quotes I saw in the book that struck me as truer than true is..... 'The Sun Never Sets on the Mighty Jeep'

The Chapters in the book are as follows... 1. The Sun Never Sets on the Mighty Jeep 2. Post-World War II 3. The 50's 4. The 60's 5. The 70's 6. The 90's (They don't have any TJ's in there yet) 7. The Future - Plus Some R&R

This book does not include any technical or repair /maintenance information however, so don't buy it expecting help in that area. This book is more for history, background, the people involved in the Jeeps initial conception, etc.

This book also covers the history of the Willys and the Scrambler better than most I've seen.

Did you know that in the war, they'd tip the Jeep on it's side if needed for repair? Well, now you do!

Oh, by the way, I bet the author of this book caught the Jeep Bug before he was done with it... I wonder how many Jeeps he owns now.?.?

It was probably a decade ago that my dad handed me his battered copy of The Jeep (which was the title of the 1970s reissue), telling me it was the only "real" book he'd ever read. It's been sitting on the bookshelf since then.

Last week, in a bit of free time, I picked it up. The first thing I noticed was the stamp on the inside- it wasn't his name. Apparently he'd stolen it from the middle school library.

It was written and published in the late 60s. Other than the date on the cover, you couldn't tell. Cloud's daydreams are a bit distracting, obviously aimed at a younger audience, but it's a story any kid (or adult) can relate to. You want something you can't afford, and you either don't get it or you save your money until you can.

I was a bit surprised at the trouble the characters get into, considering when it was written... I would have expected it to talk about a kid who does exactly what he's told- instead he's spinning sheds around, not telling his parents where he goes all day, and shooting fireworks. Then driving illegally.

It's worth an hour or so of your time.

Impressions after rereading this book 25 years later

I seriously doubt that anybody will read this review - but here goes.

This book was one of the first "grown-up" books that I read when I was a child. I used to read and reread the Henry Reed stories by the same author - but this one was different because it didn't have any pictures, not even on the cover (the Henry Reed series had three or four pictures per volume) and the characters were older (high school age). I recall thinking it was a "big" book, but this volume I just read is only 186 pages. It's all relative.

I loved this book when I first read it as a nine or ten year old - so 25 years later I decided to reread it and see what my impressions are now. I was amazed that I actually remembered every single scene, character, and plot element. It was like I just read it.

The two main characters - Cloud and Wong - are interesting viewed from today's world. In the book Wong is 100% Cloud's sidekick. He is his Tonto! There is no evidence that Wong cares about anything except meeting Cloud's needs; and this after Cloud treats him so poorly when they first meet (unabashedly racist) and throughout the book Cloud never really does anything to benefit Wong. It makes me wonder what Wong is getting out of the relationship (besides the joy and pride of seeing Cloud get his Jeep!

Another oddity is that the character Cloud is supposed to be a teenager - but he has a vibe more like a middle aged miltary or ex-military adult. I assume that the character Cloud was based on the author as an adult and not on a teenager.

That having been said I had a blast taking a Jeep drive down memory lane. I would advise anybody who is actually reading this review to go back and reread one of the first novels they ever read. You won't be disappointed.
