I use this book regularly and now my car is about to trip 100,000 miles and runs just like it did when I rolled it off the showroom, literally. Excellent reference tool for us Hyundai owners.

Simply Amazing

I had heard of Chung Ju Yung from a Korean fiend of mine. While I was going through the lows of my job, this book has motivated me to start my own business soon. The dipiction of one of the greatest entrepreneurs ever is so life-like that it would excite and thrill not just entrepreneurs but ordinary people. I am now reading it the second time and like every moment of it. It gives me goose bumps when I read about how this great man got someone else's money and technology to build ships with no prior experience of his own only to know that the orders would get cancelled upon completion! How one could lose all that he has and yet conclude that he could do anything if he put in his mind, soul and hard work into it. This story of an extraordinary entrepreneur who defied all textbook rules of business is a MUST read for westerners and aspiring entrepreneurs.

A sugar-coated biography

Steers' book is well-written but is so sugar-coated that it could easily have been endorsed by Hyundai and Chung Ju-Yung himself. For a more realistic picture of Mr. Chung, read Korean dynasty: Hyundai and Chung Ju Yung by Donald Kirk. Kirk pulls no punches in showing the fact that many of Chung's employees secretly hated him for his despotic style of management. The revelations about Chung's personal life are truly shocking.

A great book about a truly amazing man.

The engineering and managerial feats that Chung Ju Yung accomplished with only a grade school education are amazing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of Chung Ju Yung's life and the rise of Hyundai. The son of impoverished farmers, Chung managed to build the world's largest shipbuilding company, create a competitive Korean automobile, and sped the development of South Korea into one of the world's foremost economies--all with little more than sweat and determination!
Steers does a great job of detailing Chung's personal and business character, along with providing a detailed history of the growth of Hyundai in the larger context of the Korean economy. I highly recommend it!

Detailed Research on the Korean Chaebol

This is an excellent and a very detailed report on one of the Korean Chaebol, Hyundai.

You will understand how the Korean economy is structured and operating in South Korea and why they have the problems facing today.

Also very valuable is the part on the difference between Japanese and Korean business operation in the States. It reminds the rest of the world about what difficulities would be encountered and what issues should be pay attention to.

Hyundai Excel Valve Stem Seal Replacement Procedure
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-04
The procedure given to remove and replace valve stem seals is flawed:

First, most shops will quote 6 to 6.3 hours to replace valve stem seals on a Hyundai Excel. Why, if this is such a simple procedure as the manual indicates, should they charge 6 hours?

Secondly, the procedure asks the back yard mechanic to feed nylon rope through the spark plug holes to keep the valves from dropping into the engine when removing valve stem springs. There is no mention about the type, diameter, or length of nylon rope required, thus making it an expensive hit/miss guess. I have tried to feed rope in through the dinky spark plug holes. This procedure has proven ineffective. The suggestion to use rope instead of compressed air to keep the valve from dropping into the engine is an ineffective one. If anyone knows how to feed the rope in through the spark plug holes so that the rope adequately fills the combustion chamber instead of kinking up inside the engine, please let me know how it is done.

Thirdly, using the same valve compression tool as given in the manual, there is no mention anywhere about how difficult it is to use the valve spring tool in such a tight space. Even when I eventually was able to compress most of the valve spring, I still was unable to compress the valve springs sufficiently to remove the valve spring keepers.

Good for DIY

This title is good for the beginer who is after a basic working knowledge of day to day repairs and servicing. It is not as detailed as the british Haynes type manuals but still offers many cost and time saving solutions. Those people who are looking for detailed information to enable them to modify or carry out serious repair should be warned that the title may not contain the information desired. Still , a handy reference for basic repair.

I would give it zero stars if system would allow.

I can only be amazed how this book consistently gives large amounts of useless background information (such as the meteorlogical effect that transformes car exaust gases into fog) and fails completelly in giving any useful information. Do you want to find wher the sensor of gasoline level is placed ? Forget about it ! Do you need the electrical wiring diagram of Elantra model 1991 ? This is not the book you're gonna find it in. As a matter of fact, you're not going to find even the specs of the engines that equip the cars that should be covered in the book. Just fluffy, general information, no hard facts, no procedures, no how-to's, no numbers.

Too Many Assumptions

I've owned this book for about a year. It is a good reference, but I wouldn't recommend it for a novice. It has all the torque specs that you need as well as some good pictures to help find which bolts they are describing in the paragraphs. However, often you need to go to multiple different sections just to accomplish one task. And sometimes the way they took the car apart is not how they describe in the book. For example, I just completed a timing belt change. I needed to go to 3 different sections in the book. The book fails to mention that the timing belt is around a motor mount. It also fails to mention that it is much easier to get at certain areas of the car by removing other parts first.

The book would be much nicer if each task was started with a fully put together car instead of over the course of a complete teardown.

Not very comprehenisve.

I have had some haynes manuals in the past, and have been truly amazed at how well they have covered the issues at hand. This book does not do this. It pretty much shows diagrams that do not even correspond to Hyundai Elantras! I was extremely dissapointed. The range they try to cover is too far. In books that span various models, they usually show each model specifically and the differences you will run into. This book does not and makes it extremely vague. If you have no problem using this manual, in all likelihood you probably could have done the job without it. These books are not written for mechanics. They are written for regular people.

I do not recommend this book at all.

I have bought many other repair manuals. This one seems to lack important clues for the non professional mechanics. It also lacks diagrams explaining important basic procedures. For experienced mechanics it is ok.

I usually buy the Chilton's manuals for my cars, but since I could not find one for this car, I purchased the Haynes. It has had all of the information that I've needed, and has met my needs very well. It contained enough information on the wiring diagram to make the connections for an automatic starter. Very important if you live in Alaska!

Not for 2001's

OK I understand that everyone makes mistakes. Butdoesn't anyone prrof read these things a little? This book CLEARLY does not cover 2001 Hyundai Elntras, REGARDLESS of what the title says. I'm sure it does a great job of coveing '96-'00 models, but the '01 is a complete redesign and this book has nothing to do with it. What's worse is that Haynes doesn't even put out a book covering the 01's because it thinks this one does...
