After hubby got this to work on our 82 Honda CB900 Custom, then he noticed that it covered all but the Custom models. Have yet to be able to find one that does cover the Custom Models. Hubby hopes that it will at least give him some basics to be able to work on ours.

This is one the more comprehensive/technical books that I've read. Very useful if you intend to bring down the whole bike or just for the daily dose of maintenance needed to keep your bike in prime condition. Suitable for both beginners and experts. Even have parts codes so that you'll never get the wrong parts. It even has pictures and illustrations so that you'll not get lost. I think this book got more information than I need to handle my bike. It covers all VT1100s.

Doesn't cover ALL VT1100s

This book is a really useful and helpful if You would like to do repairs, maintenances, care in reasonable time effort. Clear, detailed descriptions (but too much "Caution"-s, it is acceptable) step-by-step guidelines. You needn't waste the time by guess the "really how to?" operations. You are efficiently helped and guided. These are my experiences from practice.

Honda ST1100 Clymer Repair Manual - Better than Good.

Bottomline:for the money the Clymer Manual cannot be beat. It is much better than the Hayes becuase it has twice the amount of pictures and additional information about the bike. The only downside I found is some of what I would call routine maintenace tasks are referred in the main chapters which means you have to read up on the complete process to get to the maintenance taks for example...replacing the fork oil.

I have an 1995 Integra GSR and it is probably the most modified car besides the Honda Civic. However, this book has more information for civics. It wouldn't bother me as much, except it tells how to make a civic into essentially, what a GSR is. For example, it shows how to install a short throw into a Honda. However the Integra already has a short throw. There are other mods too, but those are just common sense (Intake, headers, and exhaust, etc.) Another thing that I really don't like, is that it tells you how to make your car only good for drag racing. I would appreciate information telling how to make a good fast car that is also street legal. THis is an OK book for beginners and may be a better one for people who intend to race their car on the track only, but for me, its not worth it.

All around good book

This book cleared up a lot of things for me. The method of tuning of Hondas and Acuras was explained in great detail. It helped me get a good idea of what to do first. Also, it includes short features on some specific Honda and Acura tuners. Maybe the most helpful of all, however, was the features on the technical aspects of many not as well known modification parts. Now I know what the difference between driving, fog, and spot lights is. It also includes sections on performance wheels and tires, and how to build the perfect Civic. The book was a great overall look at Hondas and Acuras, without using too much over-tecnical lingo. You don't even have to own an Acura or Honda to enjoy it. I am fourteen years old and I loved it! I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in car modification.

I have a basic model Honda Civic hatchback and I wanted to start making modifications to it for racing applications, but I didn't know how to start. This book provides a great base for those without Honda tuning or modification knowledge and points them in the right direction. Although limited in technical aspect, the author makes up for it by providing good examples on how to get modification accomplished (go to a pro). I would have liked to see more road racing applications covered in the book rather than drag racing.... A great compliment to other Honda tuning books!

Mostly for hard core drag guys

I buy every book about Hondas, but this one seems more like a big magazine ad. The stuff they recommend just wont work on a street legal car. It does fill a big void lacking in both the Ancas and Pettit books - drag racing. If you have an unlimited budget, want to build a drag car and use all the high tech tips, then this book is for you. Just adding a few of the mods for a street car (that dreams about being a drag car) will likely cause a loss in power, expecially down low. This is where the magazines mislead people, and this book seems like it doesn't want to offend sponsors (in other words: everything works!) Certainally most of these mods will compromise streetability. I'm not a pure drag guy, so I felt a lot didn't pertain to me. But if you are a big Honda fan, then you will find much to like in any of the 3 new books.

This manual has guided me through a number of repairs over the past few years, however it is certainly _not_ a replacement for a factory service manual. The underlying problem with this manual is that it tries to cover too many different vehicles, and while it attempts to address the nuances of each model, it invariably leaves quite a bit to be desired.

I have a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo 3.1L V6, a model which is not covered too well. The pictures in the manual don't usually help, since they are irrelevant to my vehicle. Especially with regard to the engine. My particular year's engine might as well not exist according to this manual. Just recently my water pump went out on me, and replacing it was entirely different from that described in this manual. The picture of the 3.1L engine in the Haynes Manual was not mine! (this is just one example of when i've been let down).

Though an experienced DIYer or mechanic will know how to fix most things in his car, this manual was little help aside of general auto repair information. Indeed, I learned a lot simply by "flying blind" into much of my auto repair, making the manual irrelevant.

The conclusion: Call Isuzu (Helm publications, I think) and order their service manual, which I haven't done yet, but I plan on doing. I'm pretty sure that will be vehicle specific and should be much more detailed/helpful for your particular vehicle. When you call, they might ask you for 2 different versions UCR or UCR/S. I *think* the standard ROdeo is the UCR version, UCR/S I believe is for the Rodeo Sport (amigo?)].

Fairly thorough, lacks diagrams...

A 5 Star Book But Perhaps a Narrow Niche

This book was a five star experience for me. It has beautiful illustrations that totally transported me to the wind and snow blinding atmosphere of a blizzard. I could feel the sturdy bodies of the wild horses it depicts struggling against the elements. I could hear there huffing and snuffling groans as they fought to survive in the harsh environment and I could hear their breathing as the steam rose from their warm nostrils while they stood completely buried in the drifted snow. The artist and author, Tesuya Honda has done a brilliant job of depicting a very rarified experience and made it come to life. It's positively magical. The book tells the story from the perspective of one young colt who is facing his first winter. It turns out to be an especially rough winter. The horses in this book are based on the real wild horses of Japan called Dosanko horses that are found on the island of Hokkaido. The ancestors of these horses were brought to Hokkaido over 300 years ago by merchants and fishermen. When the humans left in the cold winter months, they left the horses behind to fend for themselves. Many did not survive, but the ones that did developed into a new breed - the Dosanko. There are only about one thousand Dosanko horses in the world today. The story in this book about the Dosankos' experience with blizzard conditions is a recurring experience in real life. Read this fascinating book to learn the incredible way that these small horses have adapted to survive.
This book succeeds on several levels. It is a beautiful, evocative work of art. It is a thrilling story. It introduces us to a little-known species and celebrates the unique qualities of that species. It is a great look at the working of instinct among animals. It shows the strong bond that exists between parent and child as the mother horse protects her young colt during the storm. There are all kinds of wonderful conversation starters in this book to get children thinking about ecology and the preservation of rare species and also about mankind's responsibility to the animals we employ. Both adults and children who like horses will LOVE this book, but anyone who enjoys wildlife will certainly appreciate this book.

Equal parts period novel and anthropological text
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-06
I usually don't care for historical fiction because the history depicted in most of these novels is often inaccurate, and the author almost always presents an ethnic minority, a conquering nation (that has somehow been vindicated by history) or both in an absurdly romanticized context. I enjoyed this book because it contained no inaccuracies that I was aware of, and because the Ainu of the story were portrayed with a relative minimum of sentimentality.

The majority of the book's content is divided into three sections. The first of these is an almost exhaustive overview of Ainu history and culture, presented as much as an educational resource as a expository supplement to the book's story. Essentially, you're getting your money's worth just for this portion of the book. Scholarly English-language resources pertaining to Ainu subject matter are scarce and rather expensive. For the uninitiated, this is an excellent way to learn about this very unique ethnic group.

The second part of the book details the life of the titular character from childhood to old age, ending with the departure of her son from their village. While certain plot points feel a bit contrived, Harukor's story is touching and filled with vivid details. Honda's portrayals of women and Ainu have something in common: they are respectful but perhaps a bit too reverent. To be certain, the Ainu were undoubtedly among the most technologically and socially advanced of the world's "primitive" (re: illiterate) peoples, but all credible accounts report them as being as capable of vulgarity as they were of eloquence. This aspect of the Ainu character really should have been represented here.

The third part of the book consists of a short story concerning Harukor's son, Pasekur, and ends prior to the first armed conflict between native Ainu and Japanese settlers. While this section of the book provides closure for an extended story, it also effectively places the book's entire fiction into a historical position.

The text of the book is supplemented with a wide variety of rustic illustrations and photographs. The third part of the book is succeeded by an informative glossary that provides a translated word list of relevant terms in both Ainu and English and descriptions of a handful of people prominent in Ainu history. The translation of this text from its' Japanese-language source is quite good: colloquial and not too refined.

I'd recommend this for anyone who's interested in the Ainu or a simple, pastoral drama in a primitive setting.

A good introduction to Ainu culture

Harukor is a good introduction to Ainu culture that does a credible job of presenting Ainu culture as a culture both like and unlike others, without sentimentalizing the Ainu or depicting them as primitive.

The introduction is particularly good as a general overview to Ainu culture (as far as it can be reconstructed) for the period ending in the late 17th century when the Ainu were increasingly subjugated to the expansive Japanese presence.

The biggest weakness of the volume is that it tries to serve two purposes: the first is to present an Ainu tale as an Ainu would tell it; the second is to make the Ainu culture more accessible to non-Ainu. Unfortunately these two goals are some times contradictory and Honda makes a number of digressions and explanations that someone living the traditional Ainu lifestyle would not feel the need to makel while these are needed for the tale to be understandable to modern readers, the effect is to render the actual tale somewhat uneven and cumbersome.

The above flaw is somewhat offset by the quality of the writing and general and the very natural-feeling English translation.

I highly recommend this book for those somewhat curious about the Ainu who are also looking for something easier to read than the volumes of scholarly material available. Even for those familiar with the scholarly material Harukor does a good job of putting a more personal face on Ainu culture.

While the volume is not perfect, it is the only volume of its sort that I know of and is worth the price.

I have this book open nearly every time I work on my bike. It's given me a lot of confidence in many of my own maintenance activities. However, there are errors in it that if not spotted would possibly cause problems and some of the pictures suffer from horrid resolution and lack of proper light or contrast which make it a little guesswork in finding the parts in question.

The index is relatively useless, leaving out a TON of shortcuts. It relies on indexing only the major sections and not usually the parts you might be looking for info on.

Even so, if you have a baby 'ceptor, and aren't already inclined as a bike mechanic, this is a must have.
