Scharlette Holdman cited in this book - however she has no Ph.D. nor Master's degree

Review Date: 2008-06-25
First a brief introduction: From 1986 - 1992 I was employed as an investigator at the Office of Capital Collateral Representative (CCR) in Tallahassee, Florida, where Scharlette Holdman worked as the supervisor of the investigators from October 1985 - March 1988.

I have known Scharlette since the mid-1970s. Her office, the Clearinghouse on Criminal Justice, was in the same wing of the Petroleum Building as my office at Common Cause in Florida, where I volunteered.

The Petroleum Building was next to the State Capital, the Florida Supreme Court and the State Archives and Library. When it was torn down, the Petroleum Building space and the space for the first CCR office became the Mary Brogan Art and Science Museum and a condominium. The Petroleum Building was called by those of us who worked or volunteered there the "Forces of Good" (FOG) Building -- as opposed to FOE -- Forces of Evil, such as Associated Industries, the Chamber and other big business interests in Florida. The FOG building also included (not an exhaustive list) the Clean Water Action Project, the ACLU, NOW, Florida Legal Services, Migrant Farmworker's Organization (directed by Cliff Thaell, who has more recently been a Leon County Commissioner for over ten years), Mike Vasilinda's television news service.

David von Drehle's excellent book "Among the Lowest of the Dead" provides the best history and analysis of the Florida death penalty, with Michael Mello's books a close second. Part of each of these books is about Scharlette Holdman. A bit of the negative aspects:

When Scharlette had essentially declared war upon CCR in 1987 and thereafter, some of us decided to investigate her background given some things that we had heard. Low and behold, Scharlette's claim of a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaii and a Master's Degree from Memphis State (now University of Memphis) don't exist. A claimed undergraduate degree from Memphis State: I no longer recall if this was confirmed by the university.

We used Scharlette's Social Security number, her maiden name and her married name -- with all this information, both universities had no record of Scharlette having received any degrees from these institutions.

As I understand Scharlette, she needed the "degrees" to confer upon her "credentials" that she really never needed as she is indeed then and now a national expert on capital mitigation, litigation, etc. However Scharlette can be deceptive, as her lack of a PhD and Masters so demonstrates. Even today she claims to have the degrees as when she gives presentations regarding capital cases, she is identified as "Dr." A key word search of her name will bring up some of the presentations that she has made in the past several years with the title "Dr." preceding her name.

If she has received any honorary or other degrees since 1990, that would be new information for me. If so, please let me know: P.O. Box 38458, Tallahassee, FL 32315-8458.

One of a kind masterpiece!

Building an Exceptional Workplace Environment is a book every HR person, Supervisor, or anyone who works in a group/team environment should have.

Most any employee/supervisor problem, whether it is in the office or factory, appears in the "Contents" of the book. The chapters are very short and within five minutes you will have a general idea how to tackle and succeed with an adaptable solution.

With 30 years of experience working in Human Resource, I can tell you that this book will not be left on a book shelf, but within arm's reach away.

If you want an exceptional workplace, then read this book

Lynda Ford has done an outstanding job of presenting a sharply written, cogent book on how to create a great working environment in your organization. What makes the book so readable is that it gives managers and supervisors a step by step guide on what they can do to create an exceptional work place. Many supervisors and managers feel like they are caught in the middle and that they can't make a difference. Not so, suggests Ms. Ford. They can make a difference, and this book tells them how.

Great job; very readable; and enjoyable. You won't be disappointed.

This book is really useful, as it provides an easy reference to Harrison Ford's films and allows the reader to find the ones that are worth watching.

Besides the blurbs of reviews and general information on the movies, however, this book is made really interesting (and at times really funny too) because of the stories about the production experience for each of the movies that it includes as well. Seriously, it is hard to imagine, when viewing the finished products, the disasterous, strange, and hysterical events that occurred during the making of some of the films.

So, if you are a fan of Harrison Ford or are just a big movie fan who is especially interested in behind-the-scenes type information, this book is highly recommended. If you don't care for either of the above things, why are you looking here anyhow?

It was really, really informative!

A keen volume full of the sort of inspiration that sticks to your bones

It was Sunday evening and I had just gotten off the phone with a good friend. We had had a difficult conversation as he recently was jilted by his fiance (my best friend) and the pain was overwhelming. The good faith that he had extended finally had been broken irrevocably, and he seemed on the verge of despair, as complete as his love for his now-ex had been. What could I say in the face of this so-specific sorrow for which there seemed no hope of remedy?

Not much, let me tell you. But later on that night I picked up a new book and within the first 10 pages found exactly what to say.

"What kind of hope shall we have? Not hope in a certain outcome from a particular event taking place at one moment in time....that isn't really hope; that's more of a test. It's asking for proof that God is with us, rather than taking the risk of commitment to a better future God has in mind even though we can't see it now.... [Hope in a certain outcome] is probably closer to despair in some ways than it is to hope; it means you've almost given up already, and you're just waiting for the last straw.

But the hope God gives us is a hope in the larger unfolding of God's grace and goodness transcending the immediate present. The hope God gives us is a deep confidence that the whole world is held in loving and compassionate hands, and that even the things that go so terribly wrong are being transformed into instruments of healing and grace."

There is perhaps no higher praise for a book than to say it matters. Right
now, this book matters. And as I sat at my computer that Sunday night and awkwardly held the book open with one hand and typed those words with the other, eventually hitting "send," I knew that I had stumbled upon a special book.

That book is Finding Hope, by fellow FaithfulReader.com contributor Marcia Ford. One need only turn on the television to understand the global implications of a book on hope. In this fearful moment, we are beset by war and the spectre of more war against a foe as unwieldy as evil. Is there any hope that this violence will result in peace?

But while these concerns are writ large on the nightly news, they remain largely abstract because most of us do not have a loved one in the military. Instead, we suffer through strained friendships, broken vows and wayward children. In view of these things we ask, "Is there any hope for me?" On both scores, the global and the personal, Ford offers stirring reflections on the accessiblity of hope even in the darkest of situations. Notably for Ford, faith and hope are inextricably linked.

She writes, "Like God, hope changes everything. When we come to know God, our lives are transformed; our eyes see the unseen, our ears hear the unspoken, our spirits sense the inexpressible. When we come to know hope, our lives are also transformed. We see the impossible made possible, we hear silent words of encouragement, we imagine the unimaginable."

In 24 brief chapers Ford offers such wisdom about hope and then provides opportunities for the reader to both reflect on and practice what it would be like to live in light of such hope. A keen volume full of the sort of inspiration that sticks to your bones, Finding Hope is itself a wonderful find.

The daily drum beat of corporate scandals, malefactors in the government, domestic violence, foreign wars, famines, poverty, and crime all too often result in chronic depression and a feeling of hopelessness. One antidote is Marcia Ford's "Finding Hope: Cultivating God's Gift Of A Hopeful Spirit" which encourages the reader to draw strength from the Divine and overcome the challenges, fears, and distresses assaulting our every day lives. Drawing from Hebrew and Christian scripture, and the contributions of spiritual teachers of all traditions, "Finding Hope" addresses such key issues as dealing with disappointment, recovering from loss, overcoming hopelessness, real and imagined threats, putting things into perspective, and utilizing prayers and meditations (a part of each individual chapters along with real-life examples of coping) to transforming our attitudes and enhancing our appreciation of the joys of life - even during dire times at home or abroad. "Finding Hope" is strongly recommended reading and a welcome addition to personal and community library Self Help reference collections and reading lists.

I made the mistake of cracking this book's spine just before dinner & everyone wandering in, drooling to be fed, found me gone into the wilds of Kent in England where a young woman discovers her heart's desire in the form of falcons. I relished Emma Ford's memoirs of her early days with owls, falcons, eagles & a hilarious assortment of four legged friends & foes.

The only child of divorced parents, Emma Ford labored to fulfill her mother's kind expectations of a proper profession for herself; eagerly taking on her school assignments the quicker to take off to the castle & continue her training in falconry. Sounds like something out of medieval times?

Yes & no, this is one thoroughly modern young person who follows her heart & finds herself a player in medieval recreations, her eagles starring in films & dashing off to Arabia to hob knob with a sheik. All the while her sense of honor & dedication is developing even as a charming, self-possessed Heroine emerges. This is one fresh, focused young women who has garnered for herself & her beloved menagerie a unique & fascinating niche. A fabulous gift idea! Do check out my full review at [my website]

Herbert Ford succeeded to write an original book about World War II. His heros John Weidner created an underground network as soon as 1940 and saved a thousand people (Allied pilots gunned down by the Nazis and Jews) without ever wearing a weapon. The great originality of the network Dutch-Paris is its high morale standards and its efficiency in making fugitives escape occupied France, Belgium and Netherlands towards Switzerland and Spain. A great book about an unusual heroe that deserves to be better known.

Excellent and inspirational book.

This book is very touching, inspirational, and gripping. It follows the experience of one man who would do anything to free as many Jews as possible in the Holocaust. It talks about those who helped him in his efforts, and how he himself escaped some very scary situations with the Lord's help. Everyone should read this book!

This book is a collection of photos with sayings to go with each photo about why dogs are so special. While there's not much text to this photo book, the words really capture the intense relationship that can form between humans and their dogs. The pictures show dogs in all their moods. This would make a great gift for anyone who is a dedicated dog lover

Using many manuals, manufactures (Ford in this case), Haynes, Chilton, etc., I can state that the information within the Chilton guides is easy to understand for any level repair or person making the repair. One need not be a certified auto mechanic when using Chilton, as they make the topics easy to follow and understand. I have also enjoyed the Haynes manuals on many vehicles however, Chilton covers a lot more topics and gives the average person the ability to save on their repairs. Always Chilton first.

My Husband was thrilled with this gift. I was really happy that I could help with the projects and it was simply enough explained that we didn't argue while doing them. LOL I have always known Chilton's to be the best home repair guide and I was happy to see that I could still get one when we got our new truck. I will forever buy these with every new car we get in the future. It's the "Bible" of home auto repair! Must have to save you thousands and keep your car running right so it lasts longer.

In one word - Marvelous. Right when I got It it was a breeze using it. From the ime that you open it, to the time that it's covered in car grease and not ledgable anymore, its a truck owners bible. There is an easy-read index that guides you throughtout the book and tons of photos. As an amature mechanic, I can have trouble reading complicated scematics and maps to engines. But this book made it simple. I would definitly reccomend it to anyone. (Be sure to see the parts list in the back-great help on ordering hard to find parts)

I found this book a great resource for '57 to '59 Ford Skyliner information. I have owned a '59 Ford Retractable for about 20 years and was curious to the past and making of the great machine. I heard many of the photos of early production among other things in the book were lost in files throughout the years and retreived by Mr. Magayne. In my words, this book is a must have to any Ford Retractable owner or admirer. An excellent car with an excellent past and Mr. Magayne does a great job retracing the cars legendary past.
