I was looking for a simple rebuild manual for this series of GM I6 motors. Since this is the only thing close that's available, I bought it. I'm only restoring my engine, but if you want to hot rod your motor, this has some great info and tips. Even if you're like me and only interested in restoration, it's better to overshoot when it comes to knowledge.

Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual

Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual This is possibly the most incredible well written and informative engine performance book ever written. It's not just that I am smitten by the late model Chevrolet Inline Six Cylinder motors. No they are a mere testament to perfection. Ask anyone who has driven a car with these engines and they simply last forever.
But I digress, what Mr. Santucci has done here is assemble and share his most comprehensive insiders knowledge to building these outstanding American engines into true performance overachievers! He also details everyone in America who specializes in building this inline six and gives the novice many tips on durability and general performance.
Outstanding and if I may say "The Bible" of the Chevrolet L6 Engine!!

I'm a graduate mechanical engineer and former Chevy Six racer, and this book taught me things I never knew - or even thought about. It gives every piece of info necessary to select and build a Chevy or GMC six from mild street to full race. It even provides the part numbers and interchangeability info, so you can't go wrong if you pay attention to the author's comments.

Also included are the strengths and weaknesses of each engine model, modifications necessary to get reliable performance and power, and little secrets of tuning that make the difference between good and great engines.

If the info you're looking for isn't in this book, you don't need the info.

VERY highly recommended!!

Authentic Restoration?

Review Date: 2007-09-15
For years I wondered how there were so many "Matching Numbers" cars with, say, factory tach, 4 speed, etc. available today at large bucks. With the help of this guide, one can assemble or restore the car of their dreams just as if one had special ordered it from the factory in 1964. Of course the purist would say that to take a '64 Impala SS that was originally 250 horse automatic and convert that to a 300 horse, 4 speed, factory tach etc. was counterfeiting even though all the parts have the right casting number, date codes, etc. Well, we can't make that call because opinions run rampant among auto enthusiasts.

Whatever your goal, this book will help you achieve it. Whether validating the authenticity of a barnyard find or assembling the car of your dreams, Alan L. Colvin provides the information to answer your questions. It is presented in a clear, concise maner and organized for easy reference while browsing swap meets and surfing eBay.

My only regret is that I didn't have a copy of it sooner!

If you are going to restore any Chevy or Chevy engine in this time period, you will not find a more conclusive set of working drawings, factual insight or list of part numbers anywhere! I bought the book for the information of the different Chevy engines. With the wealth of information available I might just get myself a Chevy to restore!

I have this copy plus the 65-69 and 70-75 versions and find all of them excellent reference material with one caveat, no information on 6 cylinder engines, heads, exhaust, etc. For the V8 enthusiast though, it's hard to beat.

This book is exceptional and details all the finer points that you must know when thinking about, or have purchased one of these fine cars. Take the time and read through this book and it will give you years of knowledge. The book will also educate you as to the correctness of the Chevrolet you either have, or are looking at. It also will help verify myths with acctual facts and documentation as tho the true nature of the cars and their history.

I Purchased this book 1 year ago and learned more from it in that time than from 5 years of bench racing with buddies. It not only shows the levels of performance and economy attainable by the venerable Chevy V8, but the theories this book teaches can be applied to most other forms of automotive engine building. So much information in such a small book, that is written with such eloquence that even the most amateur of amateuers can grasp, and fully comprehend it's writings. David Vizard, the author, is an accomplished engineer with a background in the aerospace industry, and is also a seasoned automobile racer. This book is a true summary of several of his other books, which go much farther into detail than this one does. From basic cylinder head porting, to rotating assembly prep and carbuerator tuning, this book covers so many bases that it is a must have in any garage.

Vizard delivers exactly what the title is all about. He helps you balance power & longevity against the pocketbook. He also substantiates his claims with his own companies dyno or flow data. Rebuilds range from a minimum of $600@300hp to a maximum of $3000@550hp. Add some nitrous (he talks about this too) and you have a 800hp engine for under $3500 bucks! Be warned, he is blunt and opinionated but backs up his claims.

Author David Vizard is known for other Chev engine building books and this one is just as good.

This book caters for the chevy cylinder heads but the tips and techniques can be used on cylinder heads not just Chev. This book has a lot to offer any engine builder. It does get a bit too technical but most people will understand it.

Highly recommended.

The book is very well written and understandable. The illustrations and photographs are top notch. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking knowledge about cylinder heads and the modification there of. Many of the techniques illustrated in this book can be applied to other types of cylinder heads with favorable results. I would like to see an update to this book that would include porting information on some of the many new cylinder heads and manufacturers that have hit the market since this book was published.

As with many of David Vizards books this one exceeded my expectations. It opened new avenues of thought regarding head modifications and then proceeded to explore those avenues thoroughly. Mr. Vizard is one of the few that shares his knowledge in a manner that very few do. To many "experts" under estimate our ability to learn and understand, or else they don't want to go through the bother. Mr. Vizard does so in a very convincing manner. Thanks for all the horsepower, torque, and reliability, David. This book covered porting, hardware, modification in your own shop, and can be utilized to any level you wish. I keep returning to it to advance in my own practice.

An excellent book for understanding & doing your own head porting

This is THE BEST book on cylinder head porting for street and stripe use. David Vizard clearly explains the reasoning behind his recommendations, and has flowbench and dyno data to back it up. The information in this book can be applied to ANY cylinder head, whether looking for that last bit of performance from aftermarket heads or improving OEM cylinder heads.

A must have item, very thorough and very interesting reading

I have been searching for a book like this for years! It contains everything you need to know to be able to successfully port your own cyclinder heads. David Vizard has done an excellent job of explaining, in a language that most people should be able to understand, the principles of cyclinder head design and how they function. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and all other books David has written (I own all of his books, and not one has disappointed me).

I would highly recommend for Chevy enthusiasts. (Note: No color photographs.)

Chevrolet: The War Years and After

Ted Boland did a great job explaining this book in his review. But let me tell you, where he is a Ford Guy, I am a Chevy Guy, and this book is perfect for lovers of the Bowtie. This is part of a series of books by John Robertson on Chevrolet. It contains a rich treasure trove of publicity photos taken by GM, most if not all of which I have never seen before. He gives enough detail to not bore you, and you can tell he has a good grasp on GM history. Of course 1941-1954 covers World War Two (when car production virtually stopped), and the post-war boom. What's really interesting is this is often considered to be Chevy's "stodgy" period, just before Chevrolet came out with its new V-8 engines, which turned the '55-'57 Chevys into some of the most sought-after-by-collectors cars ever! But those pre-55s were solid automobiles, and popular with growing families (I, myself, bounced around in the front seat in my mother's arms in a '54 Chevy while Dad drove. No child seats in those days!).

This whole series by Robertson is worth having if you're a Chevy fan, a Classic Cars fan, or as Ted said, even a Ford fan.

I'm not much of a Chevy guy, but I am a freak for books with factory photos of concepts and actual production models.

The author of this book annoyed me with his barfingly partisan Chevrolet leanings, and I found his fawning over Studebakers to be a bit odd given it is a book about Generic Motor's biggest seller. His name is John Robertson and he was lucky enough to be supported in his family (principally by his father) in his interest in cars. He started off right, his first car was a Model A he bought for $20, but he bought a '37 Chev and went downhill from there. He worked as a clay modeler at Chrysler and eventually worked for Jam Handy, a company that made films and slides for Chevrolet showcasing their products.

Since John worked for Jam Handy, he had the GM photo archives at his fingertips essentially, and he put it to good use. There are pictures in here that got me really jazzed about the book. I really liked the format, big pictures without the usual lame magazine superlatives that you see today. Hell, you could reuse the same article from out of today's car magazines and just switch the picures and car specs. But I digress, it is an easy read, clearly of the coffee table variety, simple nosegay, but worth it. Written descriptions are concise, but a bit too partisan when pictures of Fords are shown and wonky with Studes. Clearly his personal preferences are annoyingly close to the surface in this book, but I am willing to overlook that because of the treasure trove of pictures and information.

Again, I love concept photos, and I'm not talking about the wild ones from the late '50s, but of what might have been, subtle changes that would have either been dogs or monster hits, we will never know because history did not play out that way. I'd use them for customizing ideas if I had a Chevy of the era covered in this book. Another neat feature of this book is the addition of some pictures of obscure options that would be swap meet gold today. I'll name two that really sent me; a vacuum powered bumper jack that looks like a Rube Goldberg invention, and the "spinner" steering wheel. The spinner was a conventional wheel that had a ring on the left inside spoke of a three spoke wheel. Inside this ring was a bar that would surely have had to have roller bearings on each end inside a track, if you will, inside the ring. That would allow the driver to turn the wheel without ever taking his hand off the wheel as if he had a necker's knob on there. Imagine a compass with it's needle spinning and you will see what I mean.

This book does an excellent job of explaining the nuances that make each year unique on these Chevies, a must have for restorer's, the one's who just want to know, and the anal retentive-date stamp checking purists. Hot rodders will not see any speed parts or read any glory stories about stovebolts, although, there are some cool pics of the early Corvette Blue Flame inlines. Another thing I liked were the pictures of displays, dealerships, and new model shows - back in the day you would got to the Waldorf-Astoria to see what Detroit was putting out that year.

Yes, this is the consummate car lover's book, lots of pictures and cool trivia that will stump the power parking, lawn chair, gold chainers. They won't believe half of what you could tell them about their recent purchase.

So, inspite of my being annoyed by his anti-Ford bigotry, I heartily endorse this book for what it is: a book you won't be able to put down until you have read it from cover to cover. I have read it at least five times in two weeks.

Bob Greene gifts his reader with a compilation of articles that evoke a myriad of emotions. Each story has a point to be made, and that point could uplift you, enrage you, provoke you, encourage you, surprise you, or just make you exault life. Diverse in topic, they are poignant; they are inditing; they are sentimental; they are little gems of this most gifted writer's archives. I read one story nightly, before bed, and I looked forward to that ritual with great enthusiasm....our media is interested only in the sensationalist aspects of news, and at times it becomes exhausting. Bob Greene says there is another side and "the proof is in the pudding" of this fine book. It is good to know their is a reporter who cares about the "small story" that packs a big wallop.

Excellent style of clear, precise writing. Bob Greene bequeaths us back our pride in America, our belief in inherent good, and our desire to exhault everyday heros. If you are media weary, restore yourself with this infusion of hope, courtesy of one of the best newpaper columnist of our times.

This is the second book I have read by Bob Greene. By the title you would expect a story about kids (possibly ourselves in our youth) experiencing a carefree summer of crusing and ice cream. What a pleasant surprise, however, to discover the many essays about the good and not so good fabric that both was and has become our society. There were essays that made me proud to be a new American, describing good people that I can surely relate to. There were several essays that describe the ugliness that has become "life in the big city". I wish everyone had the opportunity to read this book and reflect on how good the Chevrolet Summers and Dairy Queen Nights were, because I believe we could experience them again in a kinder, gentler society that we once were

Forget Shakespeare, Emerson, Plato and all. Bob Greene is the greatest writer of all time. It wouldn't make a difference if he published a grocery list, it would be perfect prose. This review could be interchangeable with any book he writes. Greene has the talent to find a story and then write it so the rest of us know why it is important to him. I've been a journalist for 20 years and hope and pray I'll get to be a 10th of Green's level. Quit reading this and go buy all his books.

Corvette by the Numbers...a must read for Corvetters
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-03
This book is, indeed, the essential Corvette powertrain parts reference for the V8-powered Vette's first 27 model years. Some consumers' first reactions might be to question the book's 50-dollar price, but when you consider its depth and detail along with the cost of its considerable research; most C1, 2 and 3 enthusiasts in need of a definitive text on V8 powertrain parts identification will agree the price is justified.

The book begins with a very interesting explanation by author Colvin of how he got started in the business of doing parts ID books, how the Chevrolet parts numbering system worked in the '55-'82 period, how he conducted his extensive research of Chevrolet and General Motors archives, information on how to use the book and his of views on the state of the restoration hobby. In that last section you get Colvin's wry observation, "Knowledge is the ultimate weapon against counterfeit Chevrolet muscle cars." The author's expansion on that thought is well worth reading.

From there, you get more information on Corvette powertrain parts than most people will ever need. Each part type gets a chapter, from engine blocks to rear axles. Want to know information as seemingly trivial as specifications of different harmonic dampers? It's in this book. There is even a chapter for coolant and heater hoses along with chapters on non-powertrain items such as Delco radios and Libbey-Owens-Ford (LOF) glass.

I became aware of this book through my use of Alan Colvin's outstanding four-book series, "Chevrolet by the Numbers" which documents Chevrolet passenger car V8 powertrain parts used from the 1955 through the 1975 model year. This new book continues that good research and outstanding detail of those books but carries the depth to near extreme by devoting one book to a single model rather than all models.

Oh yeah, there are a few small errors, which seems typical of Bentley Publishing's books of late but, in this case, considering the size of the book, the huge amount of information inside and the low frequency of errors, this is a minor problem. For example: in the chapter on carburetors, the text refers to the Rochester E4ME "electronic Quadrajet" being used on 1981 Corvettes but neglects to note that the same carb was also used on somewhat rare, 1980 California Corvettes with the 305-cuin., LG4 engine. Also, an accompanying chart lists the '81s and the '80 CA cars as using the M4MC when in fact it was the E4ME. The chapter on exhaust manifolds claims Corvettes from '81 to present use stainless steel rather than cast iron as the manifolds' material. That is not correct. From '81-'91 everything was stainless, but from '92-'96, Vette engines, other than the LT5, used cast iron manifolds. From '97-'00 it was back to stainless, but for '01, GM once again switched to cast iron which Corvette has used up to now and will use at least until the end of the '04 model year. Other than a few small errors like this, the book's information is dependably accurate.

"Corvette by the Numbers" is well-researched, easy to read and has a generous amount of illustrations and photos. It has quickly earned a spot on the top shelf of my Vette book case where I keep frequently used reference material. Anyone needing a high-quality textbook on Corvette powertrain parts identification should buy this book. It's well-worth the price.

This book is a typical Haynes manual. If you do repair on your own vehicles, then you have probably used one at some point in time. They do a great job of covering 99% of the repair jobs you might encounter. There is also a part that covers troubleshooting of problems and a small section that explains a little bit about the options. After market products, of course, aren't covered in these nor is this a book for the total novice. It does assume some knowledge about the way a car works and an understanding of basic mechanical procedures. But definitely a must for anyone that wants to do any kind of work on a vehicle on your own. These books are a bargain for the information that they have in them.

Excellent book, provided that you know how to use it.

I've always been an avid user of the Haynes and Chilton's manuals; I purchased this one at Amazon because none of my local parts stores carried the manual for my car (a 2003 Chevy Malibu).

If you're familiar with the Haynes/Chilton's books, then you will not be disappointed. The terminology is advanced, so if you know nothing about cars and are hoping for a basic-language, easy-read instruction manual, this won't help. However, if you're familiar with cars (which I would hope you are, if you're attempting to repair one yourself), this book is exactly what you need to get the job done.
