The best (only?) guide to setting up a mutual fund
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-28
As a guide for either the complete novice or the long-time investment industry professional, this book is hard to beat. It is a veritable step-by-step "cookbook" with detailed explanations of all the areas which must be dealt with in the process. The book covers the process of creating, registering, marketing, and operating an independent mutual fund (it does NOT deal with the issue of running the actual fund's investment portfolio). In particular, the inclusion of very specific timelines/steps for planning both up to, and after, the launch of a fund should be a big help to interested readers. As a long time mutual fund portfolio manager, I would highly recommended this book to any investment professional who ever wondered "what if...." when it came to the notion of setting up their own fund.

Essential but should have looked overseas

If you are really interested by making your own mutual fund, this is an essential book to have. It gives you the require amount of work, the required capital value, the minimum costs, what to do, what to expect, how to team up (you can't do it alone), common mistakes, and good other advices.
However you won't find a line on how to set-up your mutual fund in another country than the USA, but it will give you the general idea of what this industry is like (even if you are not creating your fund in the US, what makes your fund a good mutual fund? Find the answer in the book). Since the US has the tightest regulations, making your mutual fund in another country will be easier. Having this book will help you compare the USA with other jurisdictions.
Warning: it is illegal to set-up a foreign mutual fund targeted for US-investors.

This is the book!

I'm currently in the process of starting a mutual fund and have been amazed at what little information there is out there. Finding this book was a godsend.

I'm reading it for the 2nd time now and HIGHLY recommend it!

If you ever wanted to start your own mutual fund, or think you have what it takes to be a portfolio manager, this is the book for you.

Melinda Gerber leaves no stone left unturned in her detailing the steps it takes to start your own mutual fund! Attention Wall Street Hot Shots: It takes a lot more to running a mutual fund than simply picking stocks.

This book should be the new bible to the money management industry!

After falling in love with Moroccan food over 20 years ago, I've been scouring Moroccan and other african cookbooks for the bread that is served in Moroccan restaurants. I was halfway thinking that the bread I enjoyed so much wasn't really Moroccan, but really a Los Angeles hybrid. Well, after visiting Tanger and Casablanca, I found that bread I loved everywhere!!! Well, at long last, I've got the recipe! thank you Rebekah Hassan!!!

So worth it! =D

Review Date: 2008-04-16
My son and I saw this book and decided cooking Moroccan might be a great way to spend time together. We started out making, "Beef Tagine with Sweet Potatoes" (p. 35). WOW! Not only did we have fun making the dish, but the dish was a 9 or 10 all around the dinner table with the rest of the family. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful! And the house smelled so yummy all evening.

Next we tried "Pan-fried Chicken" (p.49). Again, lots of fun to make with excellent tasting results and high ranks all around the table! Both dishes were served with Moroccan Bread (p. 78 -- actually pretty easy to make bread-wise) and couscous (so easy and tasty I wish I'd discovered it years ago).

I could not find "Preserved Lemons" at my Whole Foods store, so I've made two jars (they take 20 - 30 days to cure) while waiting for the jar I ordered from the internet. I cannot wait to make "Chicken with Preserved Lemons and Olives" (p.33) as soon as the lemons arrive!

One note; this cookbook was published in the UK and some of the ingredients are listed as they are called "over the pond" (example: "fresh coriander" = cilantro). The author has done an exceptional job listed ingredients in metric & cups/ounces as well as listing the different cooking/baking temperatures with every recipe.

I love this book!

Yummy!

I tried the roasted spiced eggplant puree' and the chicken with apricot sauce and pine nuts...Yummy! I cooked the chicken dish in my Emile Henry tagine, and the aroma was tantilizng! The sweetness of the apricots really enhances the aromatic spices for a taste that is exotic, yet palatable for even the meek at heart(aka picky eaters that will rarely try something new). It was a hit with my guests, and definitely a break from the hum drum roast chicken. Loved it! Served it with couscous and call it a meal. I highly reccommend this for poor bored cook that yearns for something new and exciting for a change.

The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is way different than Ms. Garrison's first book, The Old Girls' Book of Spells. If you're in the market for spells the latter is your best bet. But if you want inspiration, words of wisdom (and humor by the way) to get you pumped up for every Cross Quarter, The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is loaded with both.
For parts of it, I was in tears, because the author writes from her heart, and from her experience in an honest and truthful way. In other sections, she had me cracking up laughing because she talked about things that are the same for all of us with a wry smile and a sense of humor. Between the lines it's clear that this lady has been through it all. You feel like you're sitting down at the kitchen table with a wise old witch who's too real to put on airs. There's no pontificating or rhapsodizing about the Goddess here - The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is a down to earth affair.
What I got out of it in the end was a way to envision what I want out of my own life along with practical, workable ways to make those dreams manifest. You'll love the blank pages too. They will help you keep track of your self, and offer space to write down whatever it is that you're wanting and wishing for. Check this book out. It's a good one.

A really awesome, wise, and funny book. Good for any woman,

The Old Girls'Book of Dreams was given to me by a friend of mine who's into Wicca. You can tell the author isn't one of those witches who plays at it. I got the feeling her whole life is about magic because when you read this you will see that there is magic in everything. Take the time to read the introduction closely. I found that the heart meditation she talks about is pretty incredible and the instructions for it are there. The rest of what she has to say about weaving your dreams and remaining tuned to the rhythm of the natural world is told with a fresh, honest perspective on it all. This is not one of those books that just rehashes the run of the mill affirmation stuff. If you're into astrology you'll get a fresh breeze blown up your skirt too. What the author has to say about the signs of the zodiac is woven into everything she has to say about witchcraft. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they're into magic or not. And any age too. I'm buying a bunch of them to give away because it's THAT good. Besides, there's room to journal and plenty of space to sort out your own thoughts about things. The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is full of fresh wisdom. It shines a big light on the creation process and the whole experience of being a WOMAN!

"This is Africa where rhythm abounds/and music springs from nature sounds,/played on a drum carved from a tree/that grew in a forest of ebony." From the African jungle and slave ships, to Harlem, New Orleans, and even today's rappers, Carole Boston Weatherford introduces the sound that jazz makes. Her lyrical and engaging rhyming text is full of energy, motion, and passion, and beautifully complemented by award winning illustrator, Eric Velzsquez's vibrant and expressive oil paintings. Together they've authored a powerful and evocative feast for the ears and eyes that traces the roots and development of this unique and totally American musical art form. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, "JAZZ is a downbeat born in our nation,/chords of struggle and jubilation,/bursting forth from hearts set free/in notes that echo history./This is the sound that jazz makes!"

This book is excellent and captures children's imaginations. I used this book to enhance my Jazz History/Improvisation unit and the students couldn't stop asking me question about it. They all wanted to know if it was in the library. It provides a short, rhythmic, simplistic story of the journey of jazz from Africa to today. A definite MUST HAVE!

I agree with the last reader that this is one of the best books I have ever read. Horton (may he rest in peace) and Freire have been on the front lines of using education for social progress and change. They discuss their philosophies and principles about education, illustrated by powerful stories of their work over the years, in an informal, conversational style. It has made me totally rethink the way I approach teaching adult ESL students.

One of the greatest books I have ever read!

There is no better book that combines education and social change than "We Make the Road By Walking". The dialog format truly lets the reader feel as though you are sitting next to Freire and Horton in a rocking chair at Highlander. This book is nothing short of a guide for all of us to shape the world we live in.

When my 7-year old son is fighting with my 9-year old daughter for his turn to read AMELIA RULES!, you know these books are going to be a hit. The artwork is beautiful, the dialogue full of great humor and pathos, the stories engaging. But what appeals most to the kids, I think, is the characters themselves. Amelia is out-and-out fascinating--a perfect combination of pre-teen girl and tomboy--and her friends are as lively and entertaining as any you'll find in American literature.

In fact, this IS literature, and if you're the kind of parent who thinks comics are no better for kids than TV, AMELIA RULES! will prove you completely and utterly wrong. Get these books. Your kids won't be able to put them down--and neither will you.

The Best Kids' Comic Ever!
