A classic for a reasonReview Date: 2007-06-25
This is an astonishingly involving book for small children. There is a practical but manageable level of threat (of traffic, which is very real and genuinely important for three and four year olds) with the assurance of adult help when it is needed, and the constant reassurance that they are being looked after. And adults can read it forever without getting bored!

This is a Great Book!Review Date: 2007-10-25
Once you have some clear ideas about what your dreams are, the second part of the book gives you great approaches to achieving them. One of the most fantastic aspects of this section is the focus on the problems list. barbara says that your list of problems are like gold. in the beginning i did not realize what she meant but once you have clearly articulated what problems you have then you can start attacking them one at a time. So the problems lead you to the dream.
Don't get me wrong, this book will require you to work hard but the exercises are great and her writing is fantastic. Having a dream (or 20 perhaps) is something I had forgotten about as I make my way through a busy and complex life. Now I feel like I am taking control of where I am going with the aid of her wisdom and direction.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to make life changes, career shifts, or just wants more from their lives.

This Book Changed My Life!Review Date: 2007-10-16
In 8th grade, I thought that I had No Talent whatsoever and had no idea "what to do with my life", now I'm amazed at all the talents that keep showing up now that I know how to find what works for me!
I currently love teaching voice lessons 5 days a week, performing with my Global Jazz band, and I'm creating my first full 2-hour musical theater production with a Persian Iranian jazz singer friend of mine called "Memories & Media Myths of Iran & North Korea" -- for which we received a Minnesota State Arts Board / National Endowment for the Arts grant!
THANK YOU BARBARA!

Serious book art in a friendly packageReview Date: 2007-07-15
Dear Carol,
Yesterday I received my copy of PPE and wanted to let you know how delighted I am with the book. Wow! I had ordered it as a gift but when I saw it, I immediately ordered two more -- one for myself and another as a gift for my daughter (she's a magazine publisher).
I've been making pop-ups for 25 years and have copies of most pop-up how-to books that I know of, including some long out of print. I've taught pop-up book making and even made an "award-winning" pop-up (audience favorite). We've been in touch before back in the 1990s. You sent me some slides of your work. Your book is unique in that it is itself an artist's book. Colour, dimensions, texture, images, layout -- they're all perfect. It's all I can do to restrain myself from taking out the exacto knife on the copy I've got rather than waiting for my own copy to arrive in the mail.
My immediate question is: when is volume two coming out? Will you be doing pull-tab mechanisms, too?
Best regards,
Too Simplistic for the Truly InquisitiveReview Date: 2008-02-15
The vast majority is devoted to what is basically one pop-up technique, and the author gives numerous variations on that one type of pop-up as if each were entirely different. Yes, this book is simple & easy to use... great for those who want to play a bit -- or people who work with kids.
For true pop-up explorers however, pop-up mechanisms such as floating layers, scenery flats, boxes, etc. are not included in this book. To really dig into the subject of pop-ups and paper engineering, look elsewhere.

Great!Review Date: 2004-12-05
Like the first story, she tells about a trip to some caves near her home when she was only three years of age. (Just think of God speaking to someone that young!) She equated the fact that though she was scared, her Dad held her hand all the way through that dark cave and helped her over the rough places. Then she tells us that this was like our Heavenly Father! When we walk in the light of His love, He will keep us in the dark and hard times of our lives and keep us from falling into the pits of life. Jesus will help us through to the light if we just keep a hold of His hand. WOW!
I recommend this book to YOU!
Don't miss her other book, "Dancing Around the Throne" either. More deep stories from a master storyteller.
Buy one for yourself, then another for a friend that you care about. They will appreciate your loving kindness, believe me!

simple solution for my crazy lifeReview Date: 2008-05-12
Even though you are making several meals at once, the prep is very easy. Don't be intimidated by the upfront prep. In fact, it was so easy, that I filled my freezer with 12 meals in just over a week. My husband told me I had to back off before we ran out of room in our chest freezer! All of the recipes have been great, but our entire family especially loves the Sweet Asian Chicken.
I rave about my meals so much that my friends think I'm nuts, but this cookbook and this concept really work well for busy families that want real food, not fast food.

I have bought them all and this is the bestReview Date: 2008-04-15
The draw backs of the book are that it does not lay flat and has kind of a cardboard cover. Not conducive to laying on the kitchen counter. I also would have liked the recipes to be given for one recipe as well as the bulk recipe. I am able to scale a recipe but the option would have been nice. I did only make one meals worth of each recipe that I tried. I did not want to have three or four of the same thing in the freezer if we did not love it. I also like more variety.
Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is a OAMC.

Great book for theory of Ice CreamReview Date: 2002-10-13
Most important: how hot must you heat the mixture (as measured with a thermometer, no ambiguous 'until done' instructions here), and how hot is TOO hot.
There aren't a lot of recipes here. A few examples and variations so you can understand the theory and techniques. So if you are looking for a collection of vast numbers of recipes (and you already know the theory and how to make ice cream) then this isn't for you. But if you are new to making ice cream and have yet to learn WHY the things the recipes call for are in there then this is for you.
A book to learn the theory from and apply it to all the recipes you find elsewhere.
You'll need no other book about how to make ice creamReview Date: 2005-07-11
Some advices from my experience:
1. Don't let the custard freeze after done; I found out that when churned, you will get tiny ice bits. Let the custard reach 40F and put it into the machine - Chill only.
2. You can help the machine put more air into the mixture if you stir it with a spoon (made of wood preferibly).
3. For those in my home country (maybe this apply for you also), I recommend to use the milk cream that comes in a UHT/brick container instead of the one that comes in an can; you will get a better color and texture.
I also followed some advices found here (like "start your machine and pour the custard in" and "buy an instant read thermometer") to get the ice cream that my family and I like. And with the pride of getting something good from your own hands.
The PERFECT ice cream book!Review Date: 2003-02-13
First of all, this is a lovely little hard bound book. It will take up a tiny space on your shelves - and, most importantly, it is easy to hold with one hand while you are fastidiously stirring custard with the other.
Texture had been a problem for me since I recieved my Cuisinart ice-cream maker for Christmas. I've had some batches that just wouldn't freeze - some with so much cream that they left a buttery film of fat on the spoon and one unfortunate creation that went directly from machine to garbage disposal. Believe it or not I was following recipes. But some are very general in describing how to know when something is done, like how thick a custard should be. It was actually very liberating to have the very specific and exact temperatures given by this book.
The introduction and Master Vanilla Recipe are priceless. As are the explanations of correct temperatures and proportions.
I have to admit that I've been egg phobic in my recipe hunting. So many recipes call for an obscene amount of eggs and the thought of six to eight eggs in a pint of ice cream gives me the heeby geebies. The authors have tested many milk/cream/egg/sugar proportions to come up with the best flavor and best texture. Early in the book they explain the purpose of egg yolks in ice cream to emulsify the dairy fat. This is especially important to home made ice cream since we won't be using chemical emulsifiers like commercial brands. What was helpful for me was the section on them trying different amounts of eggs to get the right texture - without that eggy taste.
There are also some very nice illlustrations of what the egg yolk and sugar mix should look like after beating them, and some handy tips like how to peel hazelnuts.
I highly recommend this book AND a digital candy/oil thermometer (I got mine from Williams Sonoma - but Amazon.com may have one too). I was literally stunned by the silky texture of my Hazelnut Gellato and how quickly it froze to 'soft-serve' texture - and the flavor! It was all I could do not to eat the entire batch right from the machine!

FUNNY, FUNNY, DUMB LITTLE BUNNIESReview Date: 2008-04-13
Love the Bunnies! In this book, the Bunnies are spending some quality time together, doing things their way and having fun no matter the consequences!!!!
As usual, the pictures are wonderful, the story-line easy to understand (DUH!), and the Bunnies are dumber than ever! The Bunnies are so dumb that I don't think they realize they are dumb! But that's OK.
While these Bunnies are dumb, the author always seems to have a little message in there for us. The book has everything mixed up and slightly wrong, so kids can realize HEY! That is not right! And, therefore, they are learning, in a fun way, wrong from right!
However, these books are mostly for FUN! And they do a wonderful job sharing and giving fun to all who read and enjoy them!
Thank you!
Pam

A Great Find for the Right Audience!Review Date: 2003-09-11
The rest of the plot revolves loosely around various trips to the beach, the movies, etc., and is propelled by abundant puns and sight gags (most of which are NOT based on toilet humor). I found it genuinely funny, and an improvement on "The Dumb Bunnies Go to the Zoo"; here the bunnies seem somehow more endearing. The gags are funnier and, sometimes, even sophisticated!
As usual, Dav Pilkey's illustrations are zanily bright and colorful without overwhelming the eyes. I tried to find out the media he used, only to find them listed as "watercolors, India ink, acrylics, gouache, skim milk, and Vick's Vap-O-Rub!" A very entertaining book for any young reader who enjoys the silly, especially those old enough to get the verbal and visual puns. Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" books deliver even more imaginative "bathroom" type humor, but at a higher reading level.
Nothing funnier then a bunch of Dumb Bunnies......Review Date: 2001-12-03

Refreshing Values-Based ApproachReview Date: 2002-02-03
This tightly written (read: no fluff to bulk-up the book's size) book is organized around a set of values, which the authors found to be central to corporate success. With a focus on core values, leaders operate differently than those who are focused on what the bottom line will look like at the end of the next reporting period. Their results are stronger and more sustainable in the long run. Satisfaction levels-for them and for the people working for them-are much higher. Trust runs deep. True leadership is at work.
The authors interviewed 25 CEOs from both private and public sector organizations. They confirmed that ten core values are the essence of their work: Passion is a prerequisite. See what is not yet visible. Care enough to connect and convey. Treat learning like dirty dishes. Do what's right and tell the truth. Trust is a must. Recognize and build people. Trust your intuition. Risk to respond and grow. Respect the importance of balance. And those core values are the chapters of the book.
In each of the chapters, the authors explain the value and its importance, illustrating and reinforcing the concepts through stories from the CEOs. These perspectives are woven into the fabric of each chapter in a way that is very comfortable for the reader. The input from the CEOs brings the values to life, inspiring as well as educating the reader. The presentations are never "in-your-face," but fit nicely into the pattern of the reader's experience with the book.
Just about the time you'll feel like you've completed the book and are ready to close the cover with a silent "thanks" to the authors, you'll discover there's more. Over thirty more pages are organized into appendices talking about Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a leadership evaluation, a one-on-one discussion card, an attitudes and values graph, and profiles of the companies represented by the CEOs used in the book. And, of course, there's an index. Nice package.
You might want to get two copies of this book, one to keep on the shelf, and one to loan to friends.
