This book is very interesting if you are interested in Carnap. You get a lot of the personality of Carnap, and some of his views. It is a real experience to read this after a long research in the philosophy of Carnap.

Other may find the correspondence also interesting just because it contains some views and personal experiences of a philosopher. If you are on such thing, you may buy it as well.

An excellent book

This book, edited by Richard Creath, is valuable both as a biographical work on the lives of Carnap and Quine, and as an resource for scholars interested in the Carnap-Quine debates (and the history of 20th century analytic philosophy more generally). The correspondence, which constitutes most of the book, provides a nice glimpse into the personal and academic friendship between Carnap and Quine: a friendship that developed from their first meeting in the 1930's till Carnap's untimely death in 1970. The book also includes a useful 43 page introduction by Creath focusing on the Carnap-Quine debates on analyticity. Previously unpublished manuscripts, i.e., Quine's "Three Lectures on Carnap" and Carnap's "Quine on Analyticity," are valuable resources for philosophers interested in the Carnap-Quine debates. The book concludes appropriately with Quine's "Homeage to Carnap," a personal tribute to his mentor. Overall, Creath does a superb editorial job and the resulting book is a pleasure to read.

First let me say, do NOT judge this book by its cover.

This is the story of Nuela, an orphan who has dedicated her life to raising her younger sister. When her sister is sent upon her kalinerre (a coming of age rite), Nuela follows shortly thereafter, discovering that her world is vastly different from what she thought. The sea beckons, and Nuela reluctantly is pulled into its magical grasp.

I have had this book for years and read it regularly. My only regret??? That there is no sequel!

"William R. Van der Zee is one of the best religious writers around today. His biblical commentary is always incisive and pragmatic, bearing a remarkable relation to life as people know it. [...] Rev. Van der Zee writes about these weighty subjects with theological exactitude, and occasionally with wit and humour." Paul Matthew St. Pierre, in The BC Catholic, July 5, 1998

Intermediate Learners Will Enjoy

Review Date: 2007-08-03
This is a great book for intermediate German learners who want to take the next step to becoming fully literate in German. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the story is on one page and the opposing page is full of vocabulary that will help you get through the story. This is not for beginners however, as it moves rather quickly and expects you to know the grammar forms. It does build practice with grammar however.

The exercises in the book are excellent. They have you use sentences from the literature and dissect them in order to build grammar skills. There are also questions to answer about the reading that provoke the use of good sentence form. Der Weg zum Lesen provides a well-needed break from textbook learning, while still providing enough learning material to make it worth every penny.

There is only one slight problem. This book was written before the 1996 German spelling reform (Rechtschreibreform) and contains what would now be called spelling errors. This is very minor though, and won't get in the way of learning whatsoever.

Overall, this is a priceless resource for the intermediate German student who's ready to read German literature or strengthen their vocabulary and grammar.

This book has easy to read contemporary short stories. The stories are all written on just the right page, and on the left page are definitions for words that may be new or unfamiliar to the reader. The exercises after each story are also very useful to see if you understood the story and also to practice your German grammar skills. You definitely need to have had German in the past to be able to understand the stories in the book. I would recommend this to an intermediate level German student.

I would recommend is from the 3rd 2002 design and emotion conferance. It may be 5 years old, but the book contains papers all based on emotional design. Split into subsections, which are

Generative tools,
Evauative Tools,
Emotive Effects of Visual Properties,
Emotive Effects of the Other Senses,
From Design to Emotion,
Affective Usabilty,
Attachment,
Product Character,
Theoretical and Ethical issues,
and
Emotion in Design.

There is a paper for just about everthing, and there are only 4 - 5 pages long.

How Buildings Need to be Built
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-12
The small town I live in is going through a boom period. There are new housing developments all over and in all price ranges. And the houses really suck. From little boxes at the low price end to McMansions at the high end, there is absolutely no originality, no thought of energy or water conservation. (I live in a desert climate, all of these houses have thick lucious grass lawns that have to be watered every day.)

I'm thinking of a new house, smaller, since the kids are gone, but with some special features for my hobbies. It is really refreshing to see a book like this one that takes into account what can be done. The book is sort of a cross between an autobiography and an idea book. The autobiographical emphasis is on how events in his life shaped the ideas he has transposed into buildings.

I don't aee any of the buildings described in the book as being exactly what I want, but I see lots of parts of various buildings that when combined together come pretty close. All in all, I found more of what I wanted in this book than in any other idea book I've seen.

Glimpse into the Heart of a Green Crusader

Review Date: 2005-11-22
Anyone who has a true desire to understand the essence of green building and sustainable architecture simply must have Sim Van der Ryn's new book "Design for Life." It is a poetic response to a market hungry to understand authentic ecological design and sensitive building practices. "Design for Life" is a treasury that catalogs the life, architecture, and philosophy of Sim Van der Ryn, a pioneering ecological architect. This book is a delightful piece of writing by Sim Van der Ryn and is to be experienced, not just read.

Sim Van der Ryn buries this jewel in the text on page 127: "The heart of ecological design is not efficiency or sustainability. It is the embodiment of the animating spirit, the soul of the living world as embodied in each of us waiting to be reborn and expressed in what we design."

"Design for Life" chronicles Sim's childhood inspirations after World War II, the trials and successes at Berkeley in the 1960's, his experiments in sustainable home construction and self-supporting communities, and his environmentally responsive style of architecture. Woven throughout the 175 pages are poignant stories, watercolors illustrating thought processes, and 200 rich color photos.

Sim is the real deal, he is an architect even a builder could love. He lived it, breathed it; designed it, built it, improved it, and analyzed it. His stories convey a deep sense of reverence for building structures with meaning. The book will float you down a lazy river through a kaleidoscope of experiences that leave you in awe of the pioneering efforts of one individual with vision and a dedication to be true to himself. He did not intentionally create the new genre of green architecture. A universal intelligence flowed through Sim and his architecture was the fruits.

Sim Van der Ryn is best known for a spectacular rammed earth guitar house and the ever-impressive Real Goods corporate headquarters. He also co-authored a landmark book with Peter Calthorpe in 1986, "Sustainable Communities," a book that was early to recognize the intelligence of planned villages.

My parents were wrong, wrong, wrong

Back when I was a youngster living at home, I constantly heard the parental refrain... "You watch too darned much television! Turn off that set!"

After reading Dick Van Patten's buzztime TV trivia title, it's obvious that mom and dad were wrong, wrong, wrong. I always fancied myself quite the trivia expert, and television/pop culture was one of my specialities. Mr. Van Patten has clearly outed me as a fraud. I rarely could rack up better than 70% on the hundreds of 10-question "games". It shakes me to my baby boomer foundation to learn that I'm not "master of my domain".

Totally Terrific also surprised me in two ways. First, there were areas in which I knew more than I thought. Amazingly, I kept getting lots and lots of Milton Berle-Texaco Theatre-Your Show of Shows era questions correct. And then, there were other areas in which I considered myself intelligentia supremo, only to fall flat on my over-confident face. For example, I missed question after question in the Seinfeld category, "not that it matters". I would have thought that seeing every single issue of "the show about nothing" at least two dozen times would have earned me a few 100% scores. Mr. Van Patten's questions literally gave me "the Jimmy legs".

OK seriously, this is another fun entry in the buzztime trivia series. I loved the Micky Dolenz rock and roll title from last year. I'm rating this five stars based on expectation and delivery. I realize that Totally Terrific TV Trivia isn't Hamlet. But, it's great fun to zip through a game or two when you have a moment. I'd also suggest this title for airplane entertainment, etc.

You don't know Dick if you don't have this book!

This newest book in the ongoing "Buzztime Trivia" series jams over 900 great questions into one little (and affordable) book. There are all kinds of questions about TV shows from the late '40s to just this past season. And who better than Dick Van Patten to guide the reader along: in addition to his best-known role as father Tom Bradford on ABC's EIGHT IS ENOUGH, this sweet-faced TV legend has been all over episodic television in one way or another for nearly 50 years!

In addition to the sheer volume of information contained in such a teeny little book, my favorite thing was all the weird little factoids that come jumping out at you when you least expect it. I had forgotten, for example, that Commissioner Gordon was Batgirl's father on the BATMAN TV show. And I knew that Ricardo Montalban played a villain named Khan on STAR TREK, but I only just learned from this book that Khan's full name was revealed in the episode to be Khan Noonien Singh. This book also reports that Tiger Woods' first appearance on TV was on "The Mike Douglas Show" when he was only 2 years old, showing off his perfect golf swing to none other than the late, great Bob Hope. Cool!

If you've been alive during the past 50 years and were only paying attention to TV every other week, this book will amuse and entertain you. Imagine how much you'll like it if you've really been watching lots of TV?! Highly recommended.

Good Solid Basic Advice On Prayer For All Christians

Writing out of a Quaker background, the late Douglas Steere has offered excellent advice on prayer. Ostensibly for the beginner, this newly revised edition will be welcome and useful to all Christians. Steere has solid theology and is obviously a master of his material. He draws on a wide variety of authors and traditions and presents it all in a unified and simple way, easy to read and lucidly clear. He deals with the widest variety of topics: what prayer is, why we pray, the God-centered nature of prayer, meditation, oral prayer, intercessory prayer, congregational prayer, distractions, autosuggestion, habit and routine, to name but a few, and manages to cast new light and insight on each. A less fortunate feature of his style is his constant citing of other authors, some quotations magnificent finds, some barely apposite. It makes the text read at times like a pile of index cards. He may do it to undergird his own insights with external authority, but he himself speaks with sufficient obvious authority and reads best when he writes simply and without citations what is in his own heart and mind.

The Best!

Linda Manning's "Dinosaur Days" beautifully dovetails a propulsive rhythm in verse with the vivacious and colorful illustrations of Vlasta van Kampen.

The unnamed dark-haired girl who appears on every page has to deal with a succession of ruder and ruder dinosaurs--one appearing each day, and doing everything from squashing her morning toast to spilling the laundry detergent to marauding through the garden! The little girl is patient and sweet with each successive rude dinosaur guest, trying to teach them manners and finally succumbing for a dinosaur fest in the backyard, complete with barbecue!

The illustrations are just sumptuously colorful and detailed, and the text lots of fun to read aloud to your favorite dinosaur lover.

My 5 year old son loves this book and asks to have it read to him again and again. The story is a silly rhyme that helps teach the days of the week. The illustrations are clever and very detailed-- he always seems to find something new in each of the pictures. This book nicely blends children's love for dinosaurs with delightful situations. We are ordering another copy today to donate to our school.
