Van Zeller does it again here, as he does in his book on suffering, by being concise and deep in his insights. He defines holiness as giving glory to God, and he tells you how to pursue holiness. In contrast to so many of our stereotypes of holiness, he makes clear that holiness is rewarding in this present life and not just in the afterlife. He also makes clear that cheerfulness and joy are hallmarks of holiness. So much for the stereotype of holiness as bleak drudgery. The book displays the deep experience of Van Zeller. You can see that experience manifested in his emphasis on trust in God and abandonment to His will.
Dog-eared and highlighted throughout!

This little book, written by a trappist monk, is a treasure. I have had it for a couple years, and actually read through it numerous times. Each time I gain more insight. I believe absolutely everything in it to be true. The amazing thing is that it is so simple, rings so true, and yet I (and obviously most people) fail to live by its principles! It might have been titled, "The Only True Way to Achieve Happiness and Peace of Mind." I heartily recommend this book to anyone and everyone...there is nothing negative to say about it. Definitely a 5-star read, and one that you'll end up reading again and again.

Funny and clever: murder Dutch-style

Janwillem van de Wetering is best known for his low-key tales of a pair of good-natured Amsterdam detectives. Amsterdam is the liberal capital of the world and van de Wetering's police officers look for ways to help and protect their often crazy charges. The last thing they want to do is arrest them.
The Hollow-Eyed Angel is set partly in New York, but the New Yorkers in this story are as easy-going and philosophical as their Dutch visitors. In fact, it's the New Yorkers who are only too willing to assume that Uncle Bert, found partly eaten by racoons in the azalea bushes, died a natural death.
Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the works of P D James, Colin Dexter or Tony Hillerman.

This 13th in van de Wetering's Amsterdam Police series continues the series' unique atmospheric mix of police procedure, quirky characters and Zen outlook.
The commissaris, whose health has been frail for some time, is on the verge of retirement when he is approached by Johan Termeer, a volunteer police constable, whose uncle has been found dead in Central Park in New York City.
The New York police are calling it a heart attack, but Termeer is sure he has been murdered and asks the commissaris to look into it. Since the commissaris is going to New York for a police convention he reluctantly agrees.
Feverish and haunted by a recurring dream of a leggy streetcar driver with hollow eye sockets, he turns up various oddities - the dead man, who was a prosperous, well-dressed bookseller, was seen cavorting in the park by Dutch tourists. They also witnessed him being kicked by a police horse. When found dead the next morning he was dressed in derelict rags and covered with a filthy blanket.
With drum-playing Inspector Grijpstra and Jazz-loving bachelor Sergeant DeGier exploring the commissaris' theories and questioning the tourists and other background witnesses back in Amsterdam, the story proceeds in layers and parallels. Each encounter supplies something unexpected - a tangential approach, a stereotype revised, a small fact with large implications.
De Wetering's blend of wry humor and Zen philosophy permeate the world inhabited by his tolerant, grumpy and engaging characters. His well-honed writing style transports the reader to that world.

Van de Wetering continues his search for the true meaning of being and nothingness. The commissaris and Sergeant de Gier travel to New York to investigate the death of an uncle of a member of the Amsterdam Police Reserve. Throughout the course of their investigation, the Dutch detectives continue their own personal search for enlightenment. Van de Wetering has a talent for giving his readers more than a casual glimpse of the philosophy of Zen Buddhism, yet he manages to do so without preaching about it. As always, he makes us laugh along the way. This book did not feature as much interaction between Adjutant Gripstra and Sergeant de Gier as some of Van de Wetering's previous efforts, as Gripstra did not travel to Manhattan with his colleagues. The focus in this story was the commissaris, and his attempts to solve both the case, and the meaning of life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am glad that the author has continued this unique mystery series after a long hiatus.

I own stacks of decorating, interior design and painting technique books, but none come even close to the wit and personality of Judyth Van Amringe's inspired volume "Home Art". The moment I set eyes on the deliciously painted and tufted couch on the cover of her book, I was hooked. With an armload of practical tips, Van Amringe challenges you to look beyond the "tried and true" interior designs tips. From lampshades strewn with silky fabric roses to the handpainted "Barnacle Table", you will find nothing here but pure inpiration and delight. Admittedly, some of the projects may not be your cup 'o tea, but rest assured, once inside the pages of this book, you will be hard pressed not to throw it down in search of something to paint, glue or stitch. This is must-have book...beg, borrow or steal, this is one for your shelves!!

Imaginative, intelligently-written and a comfortable glide into the wackier extremes of home decor...what an inspiring book. I doubt that EVERY project will appeal to the reader, but ALL of them display a thinking-out-of-box quality that will help inspire the reader into making their own home into a very personal expression of fresh decor. Enjoy!

This book is mainly geared toward the 2000 and the 5000LC LiteTouch Automation Systems. The content covers practical installation and troubleshooting, but also includes an automation component section that gives specifications along with some practical tips. The goal of the book is to break-down the technology into separate events that will allow the technician/electrician and homeowner a way to comfortably deal with LiteTouch and Home Automation as a whole. The book includes experiences from other technicians, homeowners and myself that will hopefully make your home automation project more enjoyable.

As a self-taught professional trader I am intimately familiar with this text. In fact, I would call it the first book of a New Testament for stock and commodity traders. It was the very first book on trading I read that brought an element of reason and common sense to the subject. That's because it was the first book that truly brought me face-to-face with the real challenge in achieving success as a trader -- self-mastery and personal understanding. This book contains several classic concepts including a detailed discussion of both "The Loss Trap" and "The Ten Tasks of Trading" Throughout it Dr. Tharp drives home the point that the real problem people have with trading is usually looking back at them in the mirror every morning. But instead of claiming that only a chosen few have the psychological and intellectual gifts necessary for trading success, he inspires the reader to commit himself to the self-awareness and personal excellence required to become a top trader. In the subsequent books to this series he lays out step-by-step a program that will turn any committed individual into a potential market wizard. I most enthusiastically recommend all the books in this series!

I'm a sucker for plays, and this play is no exception. I was fascinated by the title and read it without having any idea as to what the content was. It is wonderfully written and stark for the time it was written. It tells the story of Christopher Isherwood and the time he spends in Germany during the Second World War. You confront frank subjects and controversial topics in this book, and you realize that during World War II, people worried about some of the same things today, such as unwanted pregnancy and racism, to name a couple. Everything you once viewed in an idealized way during this time period unravels, and you don't really mind.

In all its forms (plays, movies, and books) the legacy of the radical Sally Bowles will live on forever. It is the lidicracy of the times that makes this spectackle a spectacle. A starving artist in Berlin that on New Years Eve met a wild and (quote-on-quote) "Perfectly Marvelous Girl" in a drab nightclub in the mist of the third reich. The spirit of the girl in this grim country is one of the reasons that her story will live forever. And also, seeing a performance in Davis, California starring Matt Dunn as the Emcee, and Rebecca Tosca Grey as the ever so taslented Sally Bowles releived me of all my stress, as well as "mind matter."

How did sea horses come to exist? Could it be that horses on the land, threatened by men and searching for freedom, escaped to the sea?
I Sea Horses takes a magical glimpse into the origin of sea horses. With beautiful, evocative, dream-like illustrations, this is an imaginative, heart-warming story that will delight young and old alike.
Led by the young stallion Pegasus, and with the helped of a magical star, the herd go to the depths of the sea to find peace, freedom and happiness. In the beginning, however, Pegasus encounters much resistance from the herd, for how is a horse, a creature without gills, to survive under the sea?
But Pegasus "told them his dream of things coming to be/When the land would change and they could no longer run free/He did not know when or even know why/But he felt he must turn to the sea or the sky."
The story is written in lovely lyrical verses, but the language is pretty straight forward, making it easy for the younger child to understand. The language also has a serene, calming quality while stimulating the child's imagination at the same time.
At the end of the book there is a section about Project Sea Horse and how people can help the survival of these exotic, fascinating, delicate creatures. Children can interact with this project's website and even purchase the plush-toy, sea horse characters featured in the story.
A picture book that will enchant lovers of horses and sea horses, I Sea Horses comes highly recommended from this reviewer.

In I SEA HORSES, author Dawn VanZant has created a warm and inviting tale that is written in fairy tale style. The story centers around how sea horses came to be. Life on land was changing and the mere ability of the horses to run free was threatened. A herd of wild horses are led on a journey by a stallion with dreams of living in the depths of the sea. The journey to life underwater was not without fear -- the members of the herd express concerns ranging from worries about what other horses will think to the change that will inevitably occur as a result of their move from land to sea. In spite of the fears, the herd bravely venture into a new life; one that comes with dramatic transformation.
I really enjoyed this story, I found that it had a good balance of fantasy and fact. Children will come away from this story not only having learned a bit about sea horses, but also having their imaginations sparked. The book also includes some useful references to other websites where children can read more about real sea horses, and learn in greater detail, about sea horse conservation movements.

Anna Miller, in her recently updated version (9-99) of "The Illustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising", gives a novice or a professional some expert information in this edition. The concepts and principles section alone is worth the price of the book, but her book also covers everthing from making the "correct identification" to tips on the appraisal document itself. Also included is supplemental info. on antique jewelry, estimating values and appraisal narrative, plus weight estimation formulas for unusual diamond cuts. I would suggest her book to anyone with an interest in appraising or anyone who has the need to understand the process of jewelry evaluation.

Maybe you think the fine art of jewelry appraising is one of determining value alone - but there's so much more to the skill, as Registered Master Valuer and jewelry historian Anna Miller reveals in Illustrated Guide To Jewelry Appraising 3rd Edition: Antique, Period & Modern. Her updated, expanded new third edition combines case studies and typical valuation challenges with key documents to aid in the pricing process, instructions on how to do a narrative jewelry description, a methodology for research, and much more. Loaded with practical, technical data, Illustrated Guide To Jewelry Appraising should not be missed by any serious jewelry collector.
