The author gives a brief history of the banking history, mainly in the USA and thus motivates the introduction of the several subsequent regulations put in place, and of the different methods os assesing risk and optimising capital allocation. The book excells in simple yet powerful risk management techniques for banks. I have recommended (and, in fact some times given away) this book both to my students and my colleagues in the asset management industry.

An excellent primer on ALM.

Asset liability management can get rather complicated. The authors treat this subject in a very user friendly way that the layperson can understand, and the technician can get good guidance out of.

They cover all the basics really well. After studying this book, you will have a very good understanding of gap analysis, duration, shareholder value added, liquidity management, and other related subject.

Simply perfect

The book offers a perfectly simple approach to ALM in banking. I cannot imagine a more concise framework for this subject. The authors fully attain their objective of providing fun reading for a banking subject, something really out of this world.

This is a must see, must read book about "Forest Giants." If I had the loot to RV this would be a road map to follow. As a nurseryman I appreciated the detailed information about each species, the beautiful handrawn representatives of each major tree of the group -- be it Incense Ceder, Fir, Spruce etc.

Despite 35 plus years in horticulture, this book had much I could learn from. It is wonderfully written and illustrated.

I cannot think of no better book I could have gifted myself for my Christmas yet to come.

This book rocks! It inspires as well as informs! The line drawings are especially amazing. Van Pelt selects specific angles for each drawing, such that he captures the unique qualities of each individual tree. These renderings are beautiful and accurate. Each one can be studied for hours. The photographs could have been a bit more creative, but he follows an effective strategy by showing a human in most pictures. This allows the reader to understand the immense size of these giants. The text provides an excellent natural history, conveying to the reader an intertwined tale of ecology, history, and discovery. Lastly, I was especially impressed with the fact that Van Pelt included so many tree species and individuals. By doing this he has allowed us to truly appreciate the diversity, beauty and uniqueness of these amazing trees.

A Must for Tree Lovers!

This is an awesome book of personal accounts, illustrations, and photographs of magnificent individuals of Pacific coast conifers. Van Pelt knows these trees like no one else, having journied to, measured, and stood in awe at each of the giants depicted. His writes with witty reverence and from a deep understanding of the ecology of giant trees. Featured in the book are the author's beautiful line drawings of the trees, which capture the amazing structural complexity of their crowns in a way not possible with photographs. This book is a must for all tree lovers and those interested in coffee table adventuring into the last great forests of the Pacific coast.

A wonderful work of beauty, this is a classic

This book affects people deeply. Certainly it did me. It is a simple and absolutely passionately beautiful account of giant trees, how they're discovered, how they're measured. Van Pelt's drawings are amazing. I think this book is a classic and I think it will live in print for many, many years.

My 11 year old boy and even my 8 year old girl loved this book. We all thoroughly enjoyed the author's style and the subject was highly relevant to our study. My son is fascinated with all things war, and this book made the Bible and spiritual warfare very real to him and us. Only criticism is that we didn't want it to end! I have already recommended this book to many friends and will continue to recommend it. Enjoy!

Wow, I loved this book! I'd have to agree with other reviewers that this would be a great book to read to boys, but at the same time I think it's a great book for anyone. I was actually reading this to see if it would be a good book to read to my kids if I have a family someday, and the answer is definitely yes. I was drawn into the story myself! Grandpa's method of explaining the stories of the Bible as a history of the battle between God and the forces of the enemy really ties the stories together in a cohesive, powerful way. The working out of the plan God had from the beginning and the way He said He'd save mankind is shown to run throughout the whole Bible. There were one or two small doctrinal ideas that came across in the interpretation of one or two stories that I wasn't 100% sure I agreed with, but these were not big issues (a sentence that could easily be skipped over, for instance).

Overall, this book was great. I'm recommending it to my teenage sisters, and I can think of some guys I know who would really enjoy the whole war analogy. God really is the best warrior and strategist ever! Grandpa's Box uses Biblical stories to clearly show this and to explain that God wins, even though it doesn't always look at first like He's winning.

Wonderful Bible-in-a-nutshell story!

I was more than grown before I was able to have much perspective on the Bible story as a whole. This book organizes the entire purpose of man and our relation to God in the form of a novel about a Grandfather telling his grandchildren Bible stories. He frames the entire story as a battle between Satan and God, (which, of course, it is!), and sets all the Bible stories he tells in that context. What perspective for young people to grasp! By understanding the meaning behind the Bible stories, you can certainly not fail to understand God's purpose for us in the battle for men. Thank you for such a wonderful tool!

Disorganized Delight for Culinary Ferrets!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-03
I find Louis Saulnier's Le Repertoire de La Cuisine to be a classic text that is too much for a novice to wade through, and Hering's Dictionary has upped it a notch, in quantity and in chaos! (Mine is the 10th Ed 1987, I'm told the newer editions are not terribly better organized.)

I enjoy both books as I like to learn about classic (Usually French) preparations and terms. There are no typical "recipes" with carefully measured ingredients and steps to produce the final product in either of these books to cook by, instead just the pertinent ingredients are listed, without quantities, to remind professional level chefs and caterers of what needs to be present.

Herrings "outdoes" Le Repertoire's Escoffier cuisine in that it has these "recipes", and additionally has recipes from other countries to generously flesh out it's pages.

Chaotic...oh yes! I looked up "Duck" in the index, and got pages 409-413. Had I also looked up "Canvasback Duck", I'd have gotten a few more recipes on p. 309...and same for "Wild Duck on p. 551, and "Rouenese Duck" on p. 508, for more recipes!

Look up "liver" and find no entries, however "Calves liver" is the ticket!

Want "eggplant"? There's no entry in the English Index for "eggplant" or "aubergine", however a wise cooks goes to the French Index, and finds "aubergines" at two sites, and still it misses a third site of "eggplant" recipes on p. 87.

If you look up "Shrimp" there's 9 recipes on p. 231, however if you are wise to "Caramote", a giant prawn of the Adriatic, one gets the 13 additional recipes on p. 174!

If the price is right, and you are a curious ferret, get both Le Repertoire and Hering's. If faced with a choice, I'd prefer Herring's for the 853 pages, over better organized Repertoire's 239 pages.

My mom used to read this book to me, and I loved it. She is a teacher (6th grade) and also works with a daycare (K-5th grades). She has read this book to many classes of children over the years, and it is consistently enjoyed.

The book is full of humor, and is very easy to imagine happening in your mind. That's what makes it so great. Plus it's good quality reading--and very appropriate for children.

Even though the story is written as a children's novel, readers of any age will find plenty to love with the three main characters. In the vein of such enjoyable trios as the Three Stooges and Alvin and the Chipmunks, the mice heros (or hoodlums) of this story each flash their personalities in conversation and proceed through the adventurous plotline with their own specific style. The writing is smooth, the moused-sized inventions humorous and the story fluid enough that you might just have to sit down and read it all at once. But don't worry about the time. It is, after all, just a children's book.

I purchased a copy of this book over twenty years ago when my children were young. It quickly became a favorite of ours as it also became a family tradition. Each Thanksgiving at bedtime I would begin reading a few pages to my son and daughter, and continued until the week of Christmas. My children were always as eager to hear the story no matter how many years I read it. I teach first grade and also read it to my students each year. They love it! I now am purchasing a copy for my two grandchildren so they can begin their own and continue the family tradition. A great book with a wonderful plot, dialog, and super characters. I recommend this book for parents to enjoy with their children.

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this tale one Christmas over fifteen years ago, and ever since, my dramatic reading the story one chapter a night until the finale on Christmas Eve has become a cherished family tradition. I admit I have read the other Marvin, Fats & Raymond stories as well, but this one often seems to be the one that keeps us coming back year after year. I hope the story one year take its place next to Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree & The Christmas Box. Don't miss reading this classic.

The never ending excitment and suspense captures the imagination of all children as they see themselves living in the dollhouse at Macy's among their favorite toys. No library should be without this book.

ELaine Hodges' "The Guild Handbook to Scientific Illustration" is truly a landmark as a reference and the finest on my shelf -- and I cannot count the times I've sought it since 1989 out either to clarify a client's request or as a refresher for some obscure technique (carbon dust, for example) . . .

Even though the book is quite expensive even by reference standards (twice its price of 1989), I would purchase it again without hesitation. Truly, there is no question of hand technique that is left unanswered . . .

If that were not enough, the volume weighs over two kilos and could also prove a formidable weapon . . .

Since its first edition this book has been by far the best single resource available for anyone with a serious interest in scientific, medical, biological, nature, botanical, or wildlife illustration.

Don't be daunted by the price - this book is worth far more than the next 10 competing books combined. I've been a professional medical and scientific illustrator for 35 years, and I own hundreds of books on the subject, but I think this single volume should be the foundation of any reference library on visual communication in the biomedical sciences.
