Outstanding! I couldn't stop reading it from cover to cover, just for the pleasure of discovering what information and solutions would come next. I tried the short yoga routine when I had a major tension headache building and had complete and immediate relief, plus my headache didn't reappear hours later as it can when taking pills. The photos took me step by step with excellent guidelines. Now I keep the book handy, and have put away my bottle of Advil. I'm thrilled I don't have to be dependant on pills!
This book is very well written, and has lots of photos so it's easy to follow and understand. Here is a great blend of traditional medicine and easy yoga postures and techniques to prevent and relieve headaches. The medical information is thorough, yet nicely written for the layperson. The medical treatments transition beautifully to prevention and remedies through yoga. The postures are fabulous, too, just for relieving neck and shoulder tension and feeling more calm. I'm sold! A longer, daily routine is also offered for people who suffer from migraines and frequent headaches.
Now I don't have to mask symptoms by taking pills, and can go right to the source of the problem -- in 5-10 minutes. A treasure of a book!

I am a frequent sufferer of both tension-type headaches and migraines, and I also practice yoga several times per week. This attractive little square book provides an easy to follow yoga stretching routine that is appropriate for anyone, even those with no prior exposure to yoga.

The book begins with some basic information about headaches, including distinguishing between tension-type headaches and migraines and reviewing common causes of headaches. This material is presented in a simple, easy-to-read format, although it will probably already be familiar to those who have done prior research into their headaches. The authors then move into an overview of Ananda yoga, a copyrighted style which basically combines traditional yoga postures with positive affirmations.

Next come the yoga routines themselves. The book presents several options, including the Main Routine, a 20-minute daily practice to help prevent headaches, and the Intervention Routine, which can be used to decrease the discomfort from certain types of headaches in progress. The Main Routine consists of 15 total exercises which vary from standing in correct posture, yogic breathing, arm stretches, and neck rolls to seated and lying stretches. Exercises 9-15 include a simple affirmation such as 'I relax from outer involvement into my inner haven of peace.' The only prop required is a blanket; a strap is optional for some of the poses. An additional chapter suggests more challenging postures such as ear-closing pose, shoulderstand, and plow for once you are ready to expand your daily practice. The Intervention Routine includes 5 exercises from the Main routine plus yogic breath and relaxation postures. Finally, the book ends with a review of other options for headache treatments, including medications.

These simple stretching routines will definitely help you to release tension from your muscles while relaxing your body and mind. Since I already practice yoga, I don't plan to do the entire routine daily, but I'm confident that adding these simple postures will have a positive impact on my headaches. This is an excellent resource for those who prefer a more wellness-focused model to traditional medical treatment.

I found this book both informative and enjoyable to read. The background information on headaches is presented in a thorough but easy to understand way. The techniques for headache management and prevention are both practical and fun. I have made the yoga techniques a part of my daily routine with good result--I look forward to doing them! I would recommend this book to any one who would like to learn to better manage their own stress, and get results right away.

Praise from the Owner of a Gordon-Van Tine Home

Review Date: 2008-05-31
I live in one of the delightful Gordon-Van Tine No. 613 homes, so finding this book was a thrill. I have seen another of these houses in Cortland, NY, in the stucco finish (one of two siding options), and one somewhat-"remuddled" one in Black River, NY, with vinyl siding (!) and alterations to the sunroom windows. Both of these houses are on main roads, so I imagine there are many others on quiet side streets, like ours. Ours is in the cedar finish--original 1924 siding in pristine condition. It is in Watkins Glen, NY. The house is framed in cedar! The floors in the front of the house and in the central hallway are oak, and those in the bedrooms are fir, which, I understand, was a common practice in homes of the era.

The interior has been changed very little, except for kitchen and bath remodeling and the addition of a small master bath in the space formerly occupied by the master bedroom closet and the linen closet. A new master bedroom closet was bumped into a screened porch added to the back of the house (designed by our contractor to conform to the original home design and trim), and a new hall closet to replace the one lost to the master bath was added in the dead space at the end of the basement stairwell. The tile hearth had to be replaced due to cracked and loose tiles, and when fuel prices shot up, we re-lined the chimney and installed a Vermont Castings woodstove in the fireplace. After over 80 years, this is still a lovely, very-liveable house.

I love to show the facsimile catalog to guests. I purchased one for the daughter of some friends, who admires our house, and says she wants one just like it. If you own a kit house of this era, I strongly recommend that you borrow all the available books through inter-library loan and keep looking until you find your house. Then buy "your" catalog. Having documentation of its provenance adds to the home's value in many markets, and it is fascinating to be abe to look at the price lists (this book includes complete price lists, down to the plumbing options and electrical fixtures), to see what the original owners paid for the house.

A superb resource in architectural history

"117 House Designs of the Twenties" is a reprint of the 1923 mail-order house catalogue of the Gordon-Van Tine Company. This crisp reproduction is thus an accurate window into this era in United States home architecture. The wealth of detailed artistic renderings also make this a book of great charm and beauty.

Based in Davenport, Iowa, Gordon-Van Tine was a trailblazer in the field of prefabricated houses. This catalogue covers the company's products in amazing detail. We see cutaway views of homes that reveal the construction technique. We also see plumbing fixtures, lights, and cutaway views of furnaces.

But the heart of this catalogue lies in the detailed floor plans, as well as in the detailed artists' renditions of both exteriors and interiors. This catalogue contains structures ranging in size from a humble one-room vacation cottage to roomy nine-room farmhouses. Both one- and two-story houses appear. The main styles represented are bungalow and colonial revival (the latter including "Dutch colonial" designs), in many different configurations.

The exterior drawings capture many features: columned porches, sun porches, various roof types (gabled, hipped, gambrel), dormers, exposed rafter tails, and more. Equally detailed and charming are the depictions of furnished interiors. This is truly a marvelous book.

I was looking for some reference material for houses built in the 1920s, particularly pictures of various rooms, so that I can restore some rooms in a 20s house to original condition. This book not only has exterior pictures of many different houses, but also lists things like color schemes and construction methods. It also shows pictures of garages, doors, and even manufacturing methods for the houses. The pictures may be in black and white, but they're valuable references. ... this book is an absolute steal.

Another keeper for those who are obsessed...

As I am!

"117 House Designs of The Twenties" is a reprint of the 1923 Gordon Van Tine catalog. There are a few errors in the introduction (such as the statement that Sears started selling kit homes in 1909; it was 1908) and some other frustrating mis-information, but that's a minor point.

For those sick puppies (such as myself) who like to sit and read old catalogs for hours and hours, this book is a gem. There's lots of reading material in the front and back, giving good detail about the company and how they did business.

Gordon Van Tine was a worthy contender in the kit home business, selling roughly 50,000+ kit homes in their four decades in the housing business. (Thanks to Dale Wolicki for the stats.)

Plus (and this is a biggie) GVT was the front man for Montgomery Ward homes. Unlike Sears, Montgomery Ward did not have their own mills, architects and catalogs but turned to Gordon Van Tine to supply their kit homes.

So, if you suspect you have a Montgomery Ward home, you'll want to peruse this GVT catalog.

When I read this book I was amazed! I laughed, I cried, was shocked, touched and generally charged up over the whole book. Mr. Van Fleet created this story so well that it literally pulls you right in, so you experience what the POWs went through during WWII. I was greatful when Mr. Van Fleet came to our English class this year and shared with us about his personal life plus all the detail of Clem that was actually left out of the book. This story is a must-read for all teens and adults!

While reading this book, I literally got tears in my eyes because this book was so touching. This book is such and experience in itself to read. Bryon Van Fleet actually came to our classroom and talked to all of us about his personal life and the life of Clem Pine and it was so nice. This is a really great book and is worth every penny just to read it once.

This was a well written, fun read, about a true American Hero. The term "The Greatest Generation" was earned by men/boys like Mr. Pine. This story takes from fun adventurous highs, down to the lowest of miserable lows on this soldier's journey through WWII. Through it all you get to know what strong, gutsy, honorable men he and his fellow soldiers are. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I'm pleased to see that academia is now starting to look to subcultural doings as they happen, instead of invoking the fond nostalgia that the Beatniks inspired. The ability to digest and deconstruct the events that take place in this otherworldly space is much to be commended, and I think that by doing so the authors of these various articles may be tapping in to something most of their colleagues shy away from. The articles themselves are intriguing and scholarly, but never lose sight of their subject. I would love to see more editions of this book as the event (and the world around it - the context) changes and grows!

in these pages? Read this book and you will. Tho the author comments that this book was a composite of many different burning an festivals, te undercurrent feels strangely like one which puts you there in the middle of things.

There are a few details which, if you've been there, are a little flaky, and the book gets off to kind of a slow start (ergo the 4 stars) but as you bury yourself in this read (and it's one read that, if you're at all a burner, you will end up burying yourself in) you will be amazed... engrossed... wind blown... with a lot of little surprises thrown in that you don't expect, even all the way at the end.

There is another thing, tho... if you've never been to Black Rock City, and wonder what all the hubbub is about, ad you want to know if that ticket's worth it... and what it's getting you into... this book will give you a fairly good idea. Of course, your experience is your own... but, like I said in the beginning... read this, and you can almost smell the playa dust in these pages...

A pleasure!

Prior to reading this excellent sophisticated introduction to Burning Man, I had dismissed this event as shamanism and tantra for amateurs. However, these well written, knowledgeable, and at times quite learned articles, have convinced me that Burning Man allows for the creation of authentic rituals that are rife with both transformative and aesthetic epiphanies. Moreover, it appears that Burning Man has largely not yet been" recouped" (to the use Guy Debord's term) by bourgeois capitualist society, and thereby succeeds where its predecessors, the Surrealists and Situationists, left off. Next year, instead of visiting the Himalayas or Mongolia for my taste of the (w)holy other, I will just go to Burning Man.

A cute book with vivid and funny pictures. The pull-out attribute of this books adds to the charm and will entertain little ones not only in seeing the opposites on the page but also using the tactile opposite of pulling(out the page) and pushing (in the page). Also great for that little Space Explorer!

Very cute pictures of cartoon aliens doing silly things illustrate the principles of up-down, open-closed etc. I am still amused reading this with my toddler, even after numerous iterations, and he picks it out again and again.

I also really appreciate how (relatively) indestructible this book is compared to most pull-flap type books. My 18 month old has torn many of the flaps off of the conventional type (which makes them less interesting to read) but this book has sliding parts of the page to show new images that seem to hold up well to really serious toddler mauling.

Highly recommended!

I've already gone through 2 copies of this book because she loved them to death! The book has a nice, rhythmic flow and she loves to pull the large cardboard tabs that contain both story text and pictures. Since her attention span is still very limited, the book is short and sweet. Highly recommended.

My son is almost 3 and is a little old for an opposites book, but he absolutely loves Alien Opposites! The illustrations are very cute and the story (as interpreted by the pictures) is a lot of fun. The pull-out-the-flaps design is a neat idea and it's sturdier than the typical lift-the-flaps type book. This is a fun way for your little one to learn about opposites (short, tall, near, far, etc.). This book is asked for again and again at our house. We definitely recommend it.

All This Way for the Short Ride: Roughstock Sonnets is a rollicking blend of poetry and action-packed, black-and-white photographs celebrating the American West, the ranch way of life, and especially rodeo culture. Written in the continued spirit of the original "Roughneck Sonnets", All This Way for the Short Ride pays especial tribute to the brave men and women who dare to ride fiercely bucking broncos for as many seconds as they can. A collaboration brimming with life, love, and the passion of the strongest roughnecks, highly recommended for western and rodeo fans. " The Night the Devil Danced on Me": A werewolf moon glares / from the top row of the bleachers, horned / owl with one eye plucked. In the black hole / of chute 8, Lonewolf waits - / an ugly bronc, mustang and rank, / the cowboys say, with notched right ear / and snaky, suck-back ways.

This is an entertaining and moving collection of 32 poems by Montana poet Paul Zarzyski, who belongs to that rarified fraternity of rodeo cowboy poets. The intensity and focus required for riding roughstock are transferred into these highly charged poems, and most of them have the headlong intensity of a high-scoring 8-second ride.

Some of my favorite Zarzyski poems are included in this collection: "Buck," a Christmas-time lament for a dead horse; "To Wallace," a tribute to rancher-poet Wallace McRae; "Partner," about the fierce and loving bond between two rodeo friends, dedicated to Montana writer, Kim Zupan; "Monte Carlo Express - Box 258, 15.3 Miles Home," about reading mail while driving a speeding car; and the high-spirited "Escorting Granny to the Potluck Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed at Bowman's Corner." The best, of course, is the title poem, "All This Way for the Short Ride," about the death of another rider.

There's an appreciative foreword by Wyoming-born western writer, Teresa Jordan, and 27 wonderful black-and-white rodeo photographs by Montana photographer Barbara Van Cleve, taken between the years 1971-1996. An excellent addition to any bookshelf of Western literature.

I took my wife on a whirlwind vacation of Montana in 1996. One of our stops was the annual Cowboy Poetry Reading in Lewistown. Paul was there to recite "Rosined-Up-'n'-Itchin'-to-Git" and "Monte Carlo Express-Box 258, 15.3 Miles Home." Afterwards I had the great pleasure of meeting him and shaking his hand. I was so impressed by his ability to describe his feelings for the West and for his own personal experiences that I wanted to read more, and was able to find copies of his Roughstock Sonnets and I Am Not A Cowboy. Everything about this man tells you what it's like to live life to the fullest, from the bare-back of a bucking horse. Thank God there are still cowboys among us.

Zarzyski's poems are a journey through the cowboy soul.

Zarzyski is the perfect guide to take us on a journey through the cowboy life - his heart and his soul. But these poems aren't just for cowfolk, horsefolk, and rodeo lovers. "All This Way..." contains some of the most poignant, soul-touching lyrics. The poems seem rough, but once the reader catches the rhythm, it's a beautiful ride! Van Cleve's photos, honest and real, set Zarzyski's works off perfectly. If you are a horse/cow person or just a lover of fine poetry, please experience "All This Way for the Short Ride"! You will be greatly rewarded.

May Open Spiritual Portals Within You

Review Date: 2008-05-03
Author and Vietnam veteran Gerald A. Slyke, has written a soul inspiring memoir with his début book "Angels Never lie". The writing style takes the reader on a gentle spiritual journey as the author explores his personal awakening. He shares his encounters with the presence of angels in his life and much more. The book is not preachy, or is it out to sell us any new kind of dogma; its only message seems to be the belief in angels and the power of love in our lives. It is a message that is embraced throughout the book.

Van Slyke also adds several personal stories of angel encounters that were shared with him in his angel store in Arizona. It is a nice mixture of his spiritual adventures and others. He talks about angels in the modern day age and shows us that he is not alone in his beliefs.

The book comes across as an honest and almost understated story of how the author changed and evolved emotionally and spiritually. Events and people come into his life at the right time (God's time?) and it changes his life. He recounts some of his experiences where his dreams gave him a knowing that things were going to happen.

The author does a wonderful job of making this book very readable and enjoyable and at the same time making it inspirational. You cannot come away from reading his book without having some questions about life, about God or even about what is real or not. You will be changed; perhaps, you may even question your perceptions about your own religious beliefs. It is that kind of life story; and words like powerful and awe inspiring comes to mind!

This is a "good-feeling-story" to read that is uplifting! You may even feel an urgent need to write the author, or go visit his angel store to discuss what you just read. I know I came away wanting more of the stories and wanting to talk to author.

If you are looking for a gift for a friend, family member, or a loved one, or someone who may be ill or dying - then this book is that perfect offering for their soul's hunger. I personally recommend this book to all readers. The American Authors Association of America gives this book its highest rating of FIVE STARS and also nominates it for one of its prestigious annual book awards.

This is the fourth copy I have bought....both of my brothers are artists and I gave them this book for a birthday present - very happy with it. I also got one for myself and one for a friend - this is an excellent book and was in excellent condition every time!

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN AN ART LOVER SINCE I WAS A KID. PART OF THE ENJOYMENT OF ART IS HAVING AN INTERPRETATION TO GO ALONG WITH WHAT YOU ARE SEEING. THIS BOOK WILL EXPLAIN WHY EXPERTS VIEW CERTAIN WORKS OF ART AND PROCLAIM THEM "GREAT". IT TEACHES PRINCIPLES OF ART FROM PAST AND PRESENT PERSPECTIVES IN A UNIQUE, 3-DIMENSIONAL WAY. IT ALSO INCLUDES INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS A MOBLILE YOU CAN BUILD AND EVEN CHARACTERS THAT YOU CAN PLACE IN THE PAINTING TO UNDERSTAND CONCEPTS SUCH AS VANISHING POINT AND HORIZON LINE. EVERYONE WHO HAS SEEN MY COPY HAS BECOME ENGROSSED IN IT. EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY LIKED ART!

I am one of the artlessly clueless. This book, and the others in the series, have all been wonderful fun, which is why they are also wonderful learning tools for beginners. Low stress, major payback, and marvelously intelligent all the way through. They won't make you an expert, but you'll have a good time and be better for it, too.

I first read this book in 1975 and have never forgotten it. The first chapter: "The Courage to Accept Acceptance" is only twelve pages and it is life-changing.

"It is fairly easy to believe in God's love in general but it is very difficult to believe in God's love for me personally. Why me?"

He goes on to explain just why I should believe in God's love for me in a way that I had simply never heard before and certainly didn't understand. The author makes it not only understandable, but believable. Try it yourself.

There are two books that have LITERALLY changed my life: the first is "Awareness" by Anthony de Mello, and the second is this one. No person, book or other source has ever been able to explain the nature of God's love to me before I read this wonderful spiritual masterpiece. The main topic of the book is prayer, and it does teach new ways of praying. More importantly, I think, is the way it drives home God's total acceptance of each of us, and the nature of His Son. I've read many MANY books on Christian spirituality, and this book has had perhaps the most profound effect on me. If you never read another spiritual book, READ THIS ONE!!!

Excellent for serious-minded spirituality seekers.

Will be a spiritual classic. A must for people on a serious spiritual journey. From a Christian and Scriptural perspective. Too bad it is hard to find. Needs a better title.

I am in my sixtees and at my age I have read a lot of books about the essentials of the spiritual life from the point of view of the cristianism looking for the meaning of my life and my function in the post-modern world.AS BREAD THAT IS BROKEN has the transparency, the profundity and the optimism that we need not only for survive but for living with joy, hope and peace...mostly loving each-other.
