GREAT BOOK - READY FOR AN UPDATE

Review Date: 2006-08-19
I love this book. I have had it for almost 20 years and get it out every time we take a trip along the California coast, which is not often enough. I also get it out whenever I get the wanderlust and make plans from it to see places I never even knew existed. It covers all the small towns, and all kinds of interesting things not ordinarily seen in travel guide books. This book is very clear and all-inclusive and is filled with maps, details about shopping, photogtraphs, historical data, etc. How about an update?

Made buying a car fun instead of a headache.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-26
This book does everything it claims to do.

Years before I read the book, I bought a car (badly). I had done --everything-- wrong as described by the book. That purchase was not fun.

After reading the book, the process of buying the next car was tense but fun.

I really think the book allowed me to make a satisfactory deal and feel comfortable that I had made a good deal.

Not a good book for those with un-realistic expectations about pricing. No matter how much you negotiate, the dealer will not sell you a car unless he makes a profit. You just don't want him to make too BIG a profit! The book will help with that limitation.

Catherine Gudis' Buyways is a unique and intrinsically fascinating history of the advertising billboard industry in America. Of immense value for the academic study of American business history, Buyways is also highly recommended reding for travelers and non-specialist general readers interested in wayside advertising and highway history. From legal battles between environmentalists and business interests, to the involvement of artists and behvioral scientists in billboard presentation and design, Buyways provides an intriguing, original, seminal history of travel routes and advertising format choices.

It's All Pictures, But They Sure Are Some Beauts!

This book is strictly for the fan who likes to see big, colorful, modern-day pictures of classic Cadillacs. Tons of 57 Eldorado Brougham pictures (and some great ones at that). Good coverage for the rest of the years with the exception of the seventies. (Great '72 and '76 Eldorado Convert. shots though). Nice shots of '80 Seville (says its an Elegante, but it isn't). Biggest waste of space are the pages dedicated to the Cimmarron. Hello! Anyone who knows Cadillac Fans knows that we don't even consider that a real Cadillac in any way, shape, or form. Should have dedicated those pages to '84 Eldo Convert. I would have sent them some great pics. of mine.

An excellent car worth an excellent book.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

This is certainly not one of those one model type of books that is based mainly on material from the standard press kits. On the contrary: written by John McCormick, a notable automotive journalist (CAR, Auto Week, Ward's Auto World), this book tells the complete story about the development of the Evoq prototype from 1999 into the production XLR as introduced in 2003. The XLR, already shown to the press at a preview at Pebble Beach 2000, was the first of the `Art and Science' style vehicles for Cadillac and presented a major `break through' for this American marque. Stylish, luxurious and sophisticated with lots of technical wizardry it received an enthusiastic reception by most of the American as well as the European press. Such a car, meant to revive the Cadillac brand, is certainly worth a book, and it's a good one. It is well written with excellent detail and beautiful photographs, on 128 pages of high-quality paper, including short interviews with the major players in the design, development and production stages of the XLR and these dedicated people are honest and open enough to not hide the problems and the issues they were facing during this challenging process. But they managed to meet those challenges and introduce a real beautiful car giving Cadillac a totally new design vocabulary which can carry them through for the next 10 years or more.
Chapters are well spread over Driving (a test drive by Andrew Frankel), Renaissance (the new Brand philosophy), Design (from Evoq to XLR), Engineering (testing at the Nürburgring), Interior (Bulgari and Eucalyptus wood) and Marketing and each of them give lots of detail. I really enjoyed every page of it. It is a valuable addition to anyone's library who is interested in American cars but for Cadillac enthusiasts it's a must! A most welcome tribute to a daring Cadillac design statement.

A Elegant and Luxurious Ride through the 40s
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-16
Again, Roy Schneider proves to be the best chauffeur and guide for a ride through Cadillac's epic history. In this edition, he takes the reader for the most comprehensive tour of Cadillac in the 40s. In addition to a wealth of information and pictures, this book takes the reader back to the time, the places, and the people that gave Cadillac its most glorious chapter. In many parts, this book reads like an exiting novel about the automobiles that defined elegance, luxury, engineering, and power.
