BMW E36; A British ReviewReview Date: 2007-06-14
There are several cutaway drawings that show how the suspension and engines work. I would guess nearly 70% of the pictures are of right hand drive models. The names "boot" and "bonnet" are used to describe the trunk and hood throughout. All of the technologies are explained, from the 1.6L engine, to VANOS and the M3 models.
Production numbers, assembly locations, engine specs are all covered in good detail. Even dimensions are covered for all models. Other models covered are the convertibles, wagons, hatchback, and the Z3 are touched upon. One item of interest is even the warning about the low fog lights and that they can be easily damaged. There is little in the way of racing and a chapter each on the M3 and hatchback or TI models. If you are an M3 enthusiast look for another book.
I wouldn't say this is the best read for the E46, the last twenty pages cover the new model and how it came about from the E36. For a book published in 2000, it is well written and covers the models very well. Perhaps the most comprehensive book for someone who is new to BMW and logically explains the cars. I recommend this book for anyone new to BMW and is looking to join a club or be knowledgeable when people ask about your car or when you are at the repair shop.

Must have for anyone driving in BostonReview Date: 2000-05-05
On the one hand, this is a very instructional book with good, practical advice on driving and parking in the Boston area. On the other hand, it's simply hysterical. I almost wish I had this book when I first started driving in Massachusetts, but I think having experienced it all before reading the book made it that much funnier.
Anyone who lives and drives in Boston, or anyone moving to Boston who plans to drive a car, should read this book. Afterwards, you will fit right in on the Massachusetts roadways. Even if you aren't interested in using these techniques, understanding them helps protect you from other drivers who do. And the more you've actually experienced Boston drivers, the funnier it gets.
A sample quote, regarding increased enforcement of traffic laws: "[T]here is a renewed emphasis on FORM. You must avoid the APPEARANCE of impropriety. For example, illegal turns should be done smoothly, without signaling and without guilt. One-way maneuvers should be done in reverse gear -- your car will be facing the right way, you won't stand out, and you won't get a ticket. Establish your rule of the road with finesse and class, so that it appears to be the natural order of things."
I hope it comes back in print soon.
