Whether you're a proverbial deer in the headlights at the mercy of salespeople or a picky shopper who fancies himself quite a negotiator, you will almost certainly learn something from this book that will save you money and/or frustration. Mark Marine isn't your typical car dealer; he may in fact be "the anti-car dealer." That's a good thing. The reason other car dealers don't like him or this book is because he sings like a canary about all of the ways car dealers exploit you for their own profit.

This isn't a primer on arguing down your local salesperson to the lowest price possible. You don't need to haggle to get a good deal; in fact, even the best hagglers probably won't get a good deal if they don't understand the arcane arts that car dealers use to make money off you. Speaking of deals, those "too good to be true" deals the guys are always yelling about on TV are indeed too good to be true. Marine shows you how something like 0% financing (which sounds great) can actually cost you money. Those sweet trade-ins values that sound so surprisingly generous? They're not. You'll also learn how the cost of your chosen car manages to swell so much on its way from the salesman to the loan manager - it's not just all the accessories you know about. There are all kinds of secret little add-ins the dealer probably won't tell you anything about.

What most surprised me - and probably a lot of you, too - is the way good credit works against you. Because lenders are willing to lend those with excellent credit more than the cash value of the car they want, car dealers feel they have a license to add all sorts of extras to the deal. In Marine's words, "good credit begs for abuse." If you don't want to find yourself buried in your car loan, you need to read this book. Marine shows you how to make your credit work for you - whether it's good credit or bad credit. It starts by getting pre-approval from the lender of your choice, as that's the only way to get the lender on your side rather than the dealer's; by knowing what you can do financially before you ever get to the car lot, you also seriously diminish the wiggle room the dealer has for exploiting you for his profit.

Kick the Dealer ... Not the Tires! takes all of the intricacies of buying a car and explains them in terms you can easily understand - and profit from. Mark Marine can save you enough money to buy this book many, many times over.

In this wonderfully succinct helpful guide the author walks the reader through every step of the car buying nightmare, with special attention given to the many faults, frauds and pitfalls of credit. This book takes an inside look at how the car dealership works, especially the ins and outs of where the car dealer makes money and the tricks he uses to compel the buyer into a bad deal. There are several places the car dealer is making large profits, sometimes it is by creating an artificially high `sale price' and then giving the buyer a big discount off the fake price, thereby pressing the buyers `hot button'. Most likely these profits are made at the credit table, for instance in the method of `spot delivery' where the dealer gets the buyer to sign a contract before credit conditions are approved.

The book takes an excellent look at all the shenanigans that take place when buying a car, from the trade into the `back end profit' such as all the extras like service contracts and add ons that the buyer is talked into getting. However the best part of this book is the portions on credit, how those with good credit are abused and those with bad credit are misled by `debt management' companies that pretend to repair credit but in the end only hurt the credit more. A very helpful guide that should save the reader a good deal of hassle and money the next time one buys a car. Highly recommended.

I am one of a large group of people who wonder why buying a car has to be such an unpleasant experience. It seems almost impossible to get a straight answer to any question, much less an honest one. My worst experience was my second visit to examine a car at a dealership where I had previously purchased two vehicles and had one vehicle serviced for almost ten years. Powerbooking - this is where a dealer will add options on the loan application that are not on the vehicle to inflate the value of the car and the amount the lender will be willing to lend.

I recognized several of the tactics that were used on me and now realize what they were trying to do. Oh man, how did I ever live without this book? Not long ago I found out that I was "buried" in my most recent car, that I paid a good deal more than the car was worth. I blamed that one dealer, and vowed to take my business elsewhere. Well, in this book I found out that the treatment I got from that dealer was not unique, but actually standard procedure. But, now I am forewarned and forearmed!

If there was one book that I could recommend to all people, it would be this book! If you *ever* buy a car, then you should know what you need to do to make the best deal, which means that you should, indeed must, buy this book!

This is a must have book if you own a 1965-89 911. I found the book to be as detailed as a shop manual on the subjects it covers yet with the friendly writing that anyone can comprehend.

This book covers the basics like changing your oil to more complex tasks like fixing common oil leaks and fixing various transmission problems. -all with many excellent photos of the procedures outlined.

I've read and referred to this book countless times both for enjoyment and for reference to maintain my Porsche.

Great reference book. Very user friendly and provides information and directions that are easy to follow and direct. Great for the "weekend" mechanic who just wants to work on his Porsche in his own garage at home.

This has got to be one of the most well put-together automotive do-it-yourself books I've seen in some time, whether Porsche or otherwise. The photos are extremely clear and detailed, in contrast to most auto manuals (even the factory oftentimes). The instructions are informative and even present alternatives or commentary on aspects of the project (for example, mentioning that while the H4 headlight update gives better lighting, some people prefer the profile of the original earlier headlamps on SCs). In addition, the initial summary boxes, which give statistics such as complexity of the job, time necessary, approximate cost, tools needed, etc. makes it easier to select a project for your next weekend, based on how much free time you have available. An excellent publication.

My book arrived 2 days earlier than expected.
That night I pretty much scanned it from cover to cover, stopping at the parts that caught my eye.
I bought two books, the other being "How To Build a Car PC". This book far exceeded the other one in knowledge, projects, etc.
My goal is to build the car PC, but I know nothing about car electronics, that's where this book came in, with tips on how to wire it, how to load balance the battery, so the PC doesn't crash on start up, etc.
If you are looking for info on Car PC's and OTHER hacks, this book will stear you in the right direction, if not give you all the info you need.
I loaned it to my neighbor who is a mechanic, and I still haven't gotten it back!!! (Little does he know, he's going to help me now)

This is not a book about how to hack the controllers in your car's engine to make it go fast, burn different fuel mixtures, etc. Just like the title says, it is about car computers-and this means everything from actual onboard computers, to audio and video configurations. Like the other books in the "Hack" series, this is not a long narrative about Car PCs, it is simply a book full of 75 projects arranged by topic. Some of the tamer projects include installing headrest video screens, listening to email on the road once you've rigged up your computer to receive free wi-fi, installing a back-up camera and screen, receiving satellite TV, and rigging a free GPS-based navi-system. Of course, since all this stuff is power-heavy, there's also a bunch of hacks on how to strengthen your car's electrical system. To give you an idea, one of the hacks shows how to install a heavier-duty alternator. Throughout the book there are plenty of instructive diagrams, cross references to other relevant hacks in the book, and lots of links to web addresses where further instruction and freeware can be found.

This book gave a good introduction for CarPC newbie.
I'm coming from computer background but have no idea about car electricity, AC/DC, etc. The guide was comprehensive and very clear.

This book has almost everything you need to get started with hacking a car pc. Its great to have.

Car PC Hacks tells you how to install a computer and all sorts of cool tech in your car.

It includes 75 projects. Well, the first few are not really projects, but very helpful explanations of automotive electrical systems. I was most interested in the chapters on how to install LCD screens, how to integrate a computer in your car, and how to power everything from the car battery.

This book is obviously written by people who have installed a lot of computers in their own cars and used them for their own and their families' entertainment. It has just the information I needed to be able to do these projects. Excuse me, I'm going to geek my ride now.

Anyone who has ever owned a classic car knows there is a bond between man and machine that comes with it, whether it is Corvette or a classic of lesser prestige. That bond can drive one to extremes when thieves try to separate the two. The extremes Berkson went to would be perfectly understandable--anywhere but New York, where the fate of a stolen car is usually sealed within hours of its disappearance. Yet he refused to accept the idea that his car was never going to be found in one piece, and his determination to find it by appointing himself chief investigator in the face of police indifferance put him on a path that your average New Yorker would never have the guts to follow, especially with the odds of success being somewhere around zero.

Berkson writes in a straightforward, fast paced style that makes this book both a quick and compelling read. And -- oh yeah -- he got the car back, but you'll have to buy the book to find out how. Highly recommended.

While visiting our local bookstore, I had the good fortune to come across Terry Berkson's book: "Corvette Odyssey" on the shelf of the transportation section. Being an old car enthusiast, the title caught my eye. After I read the first few pages, I was hooked. I sat right there in the store and read it from cover to cover, then I bought the book so I could read it again at home. I found it easy to relate to the emotions and attachment evoked in Mr.Berkson by his beloved roadster. A fantastic read!

As a woman who has never learned how to drive it feels odd to be touting a book titled Corvette Odyssey. Yet it's so much more than a story of a lost and found car. Yes, we're astonished by Berkson's miraculous recovery of his Corvette after his frantically obsessive search for it. But foremost, for me, the book is about values which, to our great detriment, no longer seem as important as they once were: a sense of connection to one's roots (for Berkson it's Brooklyn and Upstate New York)and to family (notwithstanding his delinquency during the search), and a relationship to possessions which is now foreign to us. In our mad rush for the newest, the most state of the art, the trendiest, we no longer know how to cherish what we have. We learn from Berkson's book the art of cherishing--not only a vintage Corvette, but the connection to his personal history which it represents. An inspiring read for anyone!

There's a great story at the heart of this book, but what really makes it compelling is the way the author places the story in the context of a whole life... all the various connections with family and friends, and even with people who begin as total strangers but get pulled in some way into Berkson's quest. I could have read this in one sitting but preferred to dole it out over the course of three nights just to savor the experience.

This is a straight from the heart book about a man's quest to find his stolen car and almost loses his family. A really great book about how possessions can be symbolic of what's missing in one's life, and how we should instead be grateful for the people who are present in our lives.

This book is everything everyone says it is when it comes to a warm, feel-good read. More than half the book is dedicated to the situation of the school in rural North Carolina and the experiences of a teacher who went there from California to get a different experience. The main characters in the book are a couple of teachers and community leaders, and not necessarily the kids who built the car. The real story of the electric car doesn't get started until about halfway through the book. While I would have been interested in a few more details about the project, the book is still a good read. It skips large sections of the actual project. You seem to go from the initial planning stages to the competition without knowing if the kids painted the car, but that's a minor drawback. By the time the competition starts, it seems like there are only a few pages left, but that's probably the most powerful part of the book. The "disadvantaged" kids manage to win the competition in an emotional and unexpected surprise performance by their car. It appears as though the victory was partially due to painstaking planning and the good luck of having chosen better drivers who knew how to get the most out of the car. Finally, I would have liked a little more closure. There is a section at the end that quickly wraps up what happened later, and while it gives the basic details, it leaves you wanting to know just a little more. Still, in spite of all the drawbacks, this is a very good book, and if you are interested in electric vehicles, it's a different take on the topic.

This was a wonderful book. She portrayed Miller & Ryan perfectly. I had the wonderful opportunity of being a member of the NEAT the year after the events in her book took place. She captured every detail perfectly and I was able to relive a wonderful part of my life. Once you pick up this book you will not be able to put it down until you have read the last page!!

As a member of the EV team at Northamton-East, Caroline Kettlewell made me feel the whole adventure all over again. It was like she took what I saw and felt and put words to it. I am so glad someone told this story, that other people get to read our stugale to the top. If you like to cheer for the underdog you need to read this book. I was sent the book by family - maybe because of the NASCAR connection. I started it on a plane trip to the east coast and finished it, with tears in my eyes, on the way home 2 days later. You start pulling for the kids in the story from the start and share all the ups and downs as they meet each challenge that faces them. What we need is more teachers like Eric Ryan! I highly recommend the book for anyone who likes pulling for the underdog.

How can a story about electric cars bring tears to your eyes, even when you're reading it for the sixth time? Not only is the story riveting, but the writing is a pleasure. As in the works of Tracy Kidder and John McPhee, some authors and stories are made for each other. But neither of those Pulitzer Prize winners ever made me cry. This is a book to be read multiple times - for the inspiration, for the use of words, for the drama, for the joy.

Geez, the management folks at VW are a bunch of arrogant bastards - much like the folks at Ford, GM and Daimler Chrysler. This book is a great history and a really interesting and enjoyable read.

I'm an avid VW driver, and when I saw this book I had to read it. It's great! The VW story is incredible, I never would have guessed that there was so much interesting history there.

The references to the advertising brought back some good memories. I remember each ad and how great they were.

It was incredible to read about all the things that went on within and without the company, it helps to understand the car a lot better :) If you're at all interested in VW's or car company history in general, this is a must read.

It speaks of the successes and failures and takes the reader behind the scenes to see how the company was/is run. Due to the history of Volkswagon, the book is entertaining and hard to put down. Kiley does a wonderful job of telling the facts in an interesting way. At times though, it does focus a lot on advertising which is both interesting and tedious. Although it can be hard to keep all the dates and people straight throughout the book, the experience of reading the book is fantastic. This is a great book for those who know a lot about cars and for those who are just merely curious.

Absolutely outstanding and well structured. Gives a proper understanding of the fundamental theories and equation formulations, which are the building blocks for any concept to start with. Highly recommendable!

Good luck finding this much information about vehicle dynamics in any other book, that is as well put together and easy to comprehend as this one. Well suited to those with engineering/math/science related backgrounds but not all of the information is beyond grasp of most people.

A very informative book on the engineering fundementals, it would be good if a second edition with more mordern race vehicles was in the works.

I think i've bought this book a bit too early in my learning curve!
This is a book intended for the Professional Race Engineer, or an extremely motivated amateur.
It contains a wealth of mathematics for vehicle dynamics.
Very exciting, i expect to have years of fun with the various chapters in this book.

Milliken lays down the fundamentals and advanced topic of vehicle dynamics as applied to racecars. The text is not for beginning or nontechnical readers in the slightest manner. Milliken points out many subtle and difficult areas to understand, which take hours of studying to fully grasp. For those seriously considering a career in this field or to the extremely interested reader, this text is the source of information.

If cars, rock-n-roll,and the birth of those two cultures even slightly interests you, this is the book for you! The author, who also put out another great book, art of modern rock, really shows just how much rock-n-roll and the car culture have been intertwined since the birth of rock-n-roll to the present time.

I'm not a huge fan of coffeetable books. They always seem to have an air of pretension about them (or I do ha ha), but "Rockin Down The Highway" does NOT come across that way. It's packed full of cool photos and info that draws you in and doesn't leave you feeling like an outsider. Even you're not a fan of rock music and hot rod cars, this is a great book to while away the time with...and maybe have a cup of coffee while you're at it.

Awesome book. It's about time that someone wrote about the marriage between music and cars and the people that drove them. This author really did his homework. I've done my share of reading about cars but there are photos in there that I've never seen.
Worth every dime.

And cars have been a big part of rock since the early days. Whether you were revving up your Little Deuce Coupe, if you were Born to Run, or Born to Be Wild, or just roaring down the road in your Little Red Corvette, the cars have been there all along.

Paul Grushkin's book, Rockin Down the Highway celebrates this marriage of cool with photos, stories, cartoons, art and much more, bringing cars and rock together in a big, very attractive package. The book is as fun to read as it is to look at, with all varieties of entertaining anecdotes and tidbits from Mr. Grushkin and other contributors, ranging from well-known rockers and rock writers to ordinary rock fans recounting the pleasure of the open road, stereo blasting out their favorite tunes.

This is a big, lovely style book, lavishly illustrated and beautifully composed. It would go beautifully on the coffee table of any rock fan!

There are plenty of books on automobile history and culture and plenty on music history, but what makes Rockin' Down the Highway: The Cars and People That Made Rock Roll an impressive study is not just an oversized format which packs in color photos on every page - some 1,000 of them - but an attention to surveying the connections between cars and rock music. It's the first illustrated, book-length history of the topic and includes many photos not previously seen in print, coming from a notable rock historian who uses posters, photos, ads, album covers and more in the process of analyzing the attraction of fast cars and fast music to a teen audience. An outstanding, sweeping presentation which will prove a 'must' for any comprehensive rock library collection.

I think it may have been great when it was first written but it will not help you get a good deal on a used car right now.

This book details the steps and provides the reader with the knowledge required to make an educated purchase of a new vehicle. It breaks down the barriers between the dealer and the buyer. No one should step foot into a dealership without reading the information set forth in this book. You will learn how to buy a car below dealer invoice, how to handle the sales tactics used by dealers and the ins and outs of the business. The most important thing you will take from this book is the confidence that you will not fall victim to a savvy dealer because you don't have the right tools to negotiate a fair price. Why? Because this book gives you those tools. I am a young, confident female and I completely feel comfortable walking into a dealership after reading this book. Prior to this, I was hesitant and thought car buying to be a big hassle. Not anymore. Give this book to anyone you know that is purchasing a new car. It will make a perfect college/high school grad. gift.

The Hassle Free Car Buying book is a great book for the women of this world. It gives us the knowledge of haggling with the car dealers when trying to buy a car for yourself and not letting the car dealers take advantage of the females.

Wow! This book was very helpful to me. I have 2 strikes against me when buying a car: 1) female 2.) black. It is true that car salesmen think women are push overs. I bought my first new car in 1989. Yes, I was taking advantage of. I feel I paid way to much for the car and the salesman did not work with me to lower the price. I bought another new car in 1992. I took a man with me, but I still feel we did not get the best deal. This book has enlightned me on how to negotiate, what to negotiate, and what not to say. Just as Location, Location, Location is the most important thing in real estate, Knowledge, Knowledge, Knowledge is most important when making a competent purchase. The more expensive the item being purchased, the more important the knowledge.

A car is a very big item to purchase. The more you know, the better. Jake has made it possible to know more than ever the next time I, or you, go to buy a new car. I will have this book in my hip pocket and it will be well thumbed...unless, that is, I just let him do all the work for me on his new web site...oops, I maybe should not have let the cat out of the bag. It will be a great boost for us "marks" the next time we sit down across from the "super-shark" salesman.

this book is incredible. For anybody remotely interested in car racing of any type they should read this book. It is the best source of information for getting started in racing with any budget even if if's a five hundred car. Must read !!!

I ordered this book expecting a great book, and I got one. When getting started in the club racing scene, whether it be SCCA or NASA, it's difficult to know where to go, what to get, and how much to spend. Dave's book is an awesome and straightforward read about exactly what you need to get started. He tells you flat out where you need to go and what you need to do. I loved this book!

THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIC!!

I have a good friend that's been racing SCCA for the past 8-9 years and for the past couple years he's been on my case to give SCCA racing a shot. I've ALWAYS been a car guy and have always been big in to drag racing and American muscle cars. Well, this past August I finally gave in and took part in a PDX at Mid-Ohio in my daily driver SRT4. MAN-O-MAN what a blast!!!

SOON thereafter I started seriously thinking about picking up a full-fledged SCCA race car, but I initially resisted. That's around the time I purchased/read Dave's book and that was the "clincher", I was HOOKED!! Soon therefter I was on the lookout for a SSB/SSC/ITA/ITC race car and within a month bought an SSC Focus. I'm looking forward to driver's school this April. THANKS DAVE for a great book!!!!!!

A MUST read if you want to start road racing, have just started road racing or even have been turning laps for years. The book brings up a lot of great points often overlooked. Easy and quick to read, I couldn't put it down! This is real life information you need and won't get from any sanctioning body or how to drive book.
