I had bought this book in hopes that it would provide information that wasn't readily available in every other racing instruction book. This book is well laid out, with information provided just as a thorough and qualified instructor would give you. If you are truly a professional driver looking for those gems of information to help you get to the top, you won't find it here either. The nutrition section is all right, it provides some information, but I feel you really would need another book on sports nutrition to create a worthwhile plan for yourself. Sections on resources are painfully short; Sponsor information is general and nothing but common sense, the formula for working with your team isn't always practical and once again general. Once again a wonderful book for beginners or regional drivers looking to feel more professional.

Altho' not even an aspiring racecar driver, I read Metcalf's book, so I am approaching it with a "street car" mentality. With the first page of this book, he piqued my interest with his innovative approach to a disclaimer. His approach to racing is experienced, educated, informative and, as as added bonus, entertaining, with an understanding of to whom he is speaking -- you as the reader -- and you as a driver. It IS a very technical book on the art of race car driving. However, even readers like me can glean both an understanding of the race track with all its finer points, and some helpful hints on driving busy or clogged interstates, deduced from his knowlegable and insightive writing. I understand he has a novel in the works.

I have been racing most of my life and this book contains information I have never seen in print anywhere else. The other books I have read on this subject tell how to start racing but this one tells you how to get good at it. Metcalf explains everything from from how a driver should prepare himself mentally before going on the track to how sponsorship really works and how to get sponsored. He has chapters on driving, chassis setup, offensive and defensive passing manuevers, selecting the best car and class to race, running a team, planning a championship, physical fittness and more that are each directly related to what a driver must do be be successful. My girlfriend read this book and now she seems to have a better insight into why I race and the things I and all drivers must face. Because of her reaction, I think it is also a very good book for racing enthusiasts to gain a better understanding of what the inside of racing is all about. At first I thought the book to be a little expensive, but after reading it, it is worth every penny. If you are a racing enthusiast, it's the best book you will see on what the pro drivers must deal with on a day to day basis. If you are a racer, buy it and memorize it. It's that good.

Over 20+ years of being an enthusiast/racer, i've read pretty much every book on this subject i could get my hands on. This book is the most real world guide to racing i've seen yet. this book should serve to inform an aspiring driver what to expect and possibly remove some of the misconceptions that so many enter motorsports with. I could have used this book 20 years ago. ----------------------------------------- JBL

We were happy to find this book because, face it, a repair manual for a 13 year old Geo Tracker is not in the top ten best-seller list. We bought this book because we just bought that very Tracker for running around town in our second home in Mexico, where this little puddle jumper and its clone the Suzuki Sidekick are verrrry popular. We have not yet needed to use it for repair but the pictures and descriptions seem to be helpful and quite adequate for any problems we are likely to deal with ourselves.

The manual goes into the motor well. It is easy to follow. The photos are pretty poor though. It really lacks information on tranfer cases and differentials. if you are only going to remove the components and replace them it is fine, but thats is far as it goes.

This will lead you to interesting places that are mostly not well known. The views are stunning. A hiker on the Appalachian Trail said the view from Wayah Bald is the best on the trail. The only problem we had is that road numbers have been changed to names, but most of the numbers were still in fine print on the signs.

This guidebook, unlike most, is so encyclopedic in scope that I give it as a gift to newcomers to the area. It is also an invaluable reference for the visitor who wants to see more than the fabulous Biltmore Estate. Even though I am a native of the area, I learned nearly everything I know about Western North Carolina from this book alone and it is my primary reference. I am still amazed at how much fact, history and folklore [just enough to bring alive the curve of the road, the odd landmark, the abandoned building] is packed in its 300 pages. The author, who must have collapsed from exhaustion when she finished it, takes you on a detailed tour, laid out by the tenth of the mile, of carefully drawn sections of backroads that you can follow leisurely without getting lost. The author is completely absent from the text. The lucid style will please readers who want the facts, not editorial comment. This book, as well as the others in this publisher's backroads series, makes an excellent gift for anyone, especially the many seniors who have relocated, or are considering relocating to this fascinating region. It is also a valuable reference for natives, like me, who didn't know how much they didn't know.

I was introduced to this book by a friend and ended up buying the whole series! If you want to know more about western NC and spend your days enjoying a well written dialog that accurately directs you to place the other guides don't even mention, Buy this book. If you want a restaurant guide look elsewhere. I can wholeheartedly recommend the entire series from this publisher. Similar to the "off the beaten path" series only better, written by life long residents that obviously love their home state!

If you love racing, and if you have the respect of great drivers you will love this book. I own many NASCAR books, and this is my favorite. The pictures are amazing the information is great. You can't go wrong with this book. There is one sad thing about the book...after reading it reality sets in that we won't see this rivalry on the track ever again. The memories are well-documented in this book and will live on! Thanks Dale and Jeff!

I ordered this book a few days after the death of Dale Earnhardt. I've been a Jeff Gordon fan for a few years now, and loved watching the on-track duels between these two drivers. The stories and pictures compliment each other very well, telling the story of two fierce competitors and their respect for one another. I am sad knowing that there will never be another last lap duel between 'Wonderboy' and the Intimidator, but this book helps keep the memories alive. Highly recommended for fans of either driver, or NASCAR fans in general.

For anyone who likes balls-to-the-wall Nascar action this is the book for you! "Trading Paint" features 173 of the most awesome racing photos ever assembled and delves inside the intense rivalry that Jeff Gordon and the late great Dale Earnhardt shared. The shots of The Intimidator in action provide a great time capsule depicting a man at the top of his sport. As a huge fan of Earnhardt it was both enjoyable and bittersweet looking back over his legendary career through the pictures and text in this book. I also have more respect for Jeff Gordon than ever after reading his story and looking back on his many impressive victories. He's still got a lot of great racing left in him, and if you aren't impressed with him yet you should really check out some of the sick action shots of #24 in this book. Bottom line, whether you're a fan of Earnhardt or Gordon or you just plain love Nascar racing, "Trading Paint" is a must-have!

The book categorizes games by age groups. From 2- year olds to teens, there are lots of great games to play that stimulate brains-- painlessly.
Playing the games in this book makes any trip more enjoyable and makes traveling seem shorter.
The games even promote conversation. ALL with no batteries required.

If you have yet to read a book by Ms Burton, you don't know what you are missing. This lovely lady tells stories that keep you turning every page. Never do you want to put the book down nor do you ever want it to end. They are stories that you wish to continue on and on. And the next day you awake still having those characters inside your head. I fell in love with Brenda and Alex and kept wondering when the two were going to come to their senses and finally get together. I loved the way that Alex would go to the school to see her and help out with her activities. This was a love story; one that everyone should read. This is a five stars two thumbs up book!! An incredible writer, another incredible story. I would recommend this sweet love story to one and all. It was so wonderful!!

Rod and custom fans will love this book but it's also a treasure for those of us who prefer our "iron" stock. I knew that Studebaker can easily become "Baker" - to give an example not cited in this volume - but I had to read Breitenstein to learn that a Buick is a "Buford". Or a super-cool "Bu". Tom Wolfe should discover this book if he hasn't already. It's full of candy-colored hip-and-sly humor and illuminates a lively decades-old subculture - you just have to love it. Whether or not you tool around in a hopped-up Chevy Biscayne ("Biscuit").

This book is long overdue. Over the past decades I have seen many feeble attempts made to document the broad and colorful language of the hot rodder. The Ultimate Hot Rod Dictionary puts all previous efforts to shame. With over 1,600 words, phrases and expressions represented - spanning nearly a full century of experience - this book should be considered the "ultimate authority" on the specialized language of a unique American subculture.
Author Bretenstein very clearly knows his material. What made this book so appealing to me is that it goes well beyond the curt, skeletal definitions found in most dictionaries and includes a wealth of history, etymologies (word origins) as well as plenty of fun trivia. There is a staggering amount of information crammed into the book's 243 pages , but I have yet to find any inaccuracies . The material is "dead-on." Bretenstein has clearly done his homework.
I have also found that the book has broad appeal. The Ultimate Hot Rod Dictionary is very enlightening and
it's ideal for beginners, but those readers who feel they already know the subject should prepare to be humbled ;nobody knows all of this stuff. What's more, the book's writing style is clear and fluent making for a most pleasurable read.
Conclusion: The Ultimate Hot Rod Dictionary is a "must have" for any rodding, drag, custom or musclecar enthusiast!

This unpretentious little book is a gold mine of information. It was so thorough I couldn't believe it. I tried to think up every obscure name or subject, and it had them all. It had all the old, 40's and 50's jargon, but the latest ones too. The illustrations, though not lavish by any means, aid in explaining the definitions. Do yourself a favor - buy this book!

This book is an excellent source of information for novice and expert alike. It includes many exploded diagrams, photographs, and color wiring diagrams. If you own a 1966-1969 VW Bug or Karmann Ghia you NEED this book in your shop or garage!

Just spend a little more on this book, than the other publications, because it is ten times more usefull. I wish I had bought it first.

The book I ordered was delivered on time, just as expected. Whenever I place an order through Amazon.com I rest assured that I'll get it when I want it. As for the book itself, what can I say? It's an Official Volkswagen Service Manual, you can't go wrong when you buy something like this. A must for the enthusiast as well as the pro.

I have used other manuals from Bentley, and have found them all to be easy to read and follow.

So, you bought that squareback you've had your eye on since you were 18? You're going to need more than that "Compleat (sic) Idiot's Guide..." to get the whole thing working the way it should.
Wiring diagrams, Breakaparts, cross-sections and every number you'll ever need to identify, evaluate and fix whatever plagues your type 3. Add the decidedly helpful pictures and you'll be tooling down Highway 1 in your air-cooled wonder in no time.
By the way -- Type 3s are notchbacks, squarebacks, variants -- not "Love Bugs."
