"They Just fade Away" provides a moving reminder of how some have undertaken the horrific challenges of war so that the rest of us may be spared.
A deceptively simple style that is rich with poignant imagery and stunning understatement, is well suited to the modest citizen hero whose reflections allow us a view into those moments of lonliness, hardship and horror that were the lot of one of us, a long time ago.
"They just Fade Away" is a treasure that deserves our acclaim, its gifted author a brave and decent man who merits our admiration and our gratitude.

A wonderful book to explain death to small children.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-11
I recently suffered the death of my 3rd baby boy, Tanner Jason. He was a full term baby, born into the arms of angels on September 30, 1999. (stillborn) My other 2 boys are ages 5 and 2. They were very anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new baby brother. It was the saddest moment of my life when I told them that their brother had died and would not be coming home with us. It is so hard to explain to death to small children. Thumpy's Story is the story of a bunny family who experiences the loss of one of the 3 child bunnies. It details every aspect of the death on a child's level...such as death is when breath and movement stop. The story is written from Thumpy's perspective and talks of how his parents were sad and how he and his brother handled the loss of their sister. It even delves into burial. My 5 year old son asked me to read it and reread it many times. He could really relate to Thumpy. I am so glad I have found this book for him. It is THE BEST children's book on this topic I have found.

This book serves as an introduction to the work of artist, Tomory Dodge. It is filled with stunning images of his works, from the immense sized paintings to fairly small ones. Beautifully photographed. Going through this book makes me wish for one of his paintings to be hung on a wall in my house and envy anyone else who is lucky enough to have one.

Establishes the victims of armed conflict and restores hope!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-25
Cole P. Dodge is on-board once again with the right government and non-government organizations (NGOs) and the right individuals in the aid organizations who documented the real crisis, largely without the blessing of the organizations they represented, facing Ugandan children growing up to be challenged by unstable regimes... especially in the decade of the 1980s. He holds world-class credentials and contacts as well as the will of the common man at the forefront. His name is synonymous with the abundant efforts of UNICEF in Uganda on behalf of women and children. This title draws upon his background in social anthropology, public health administration, writing talent and concern for the psychological healing of the child soldier and urban and rural children that faced poverty, brutilization, the rape, murder and torture of siblings, family members and relatives, dislocation from their homes and resources like healthcare and education. Many themes supply closure and hope for the future of these children that are now entering adulthood. To understand the environment, attitudes and condition of the child as a natural resource is to read the whole story from the children themselves and heavily invest in the mechanisms of education, health and hope. This title comes highly recommended for and by academics, healthcare practitioners, aid agency workers and any person that is involved in development issues and youth involvement.

After the death of my father, this was the most helpful of all the books I read. It was filled with useful ideas, not platitudes. I found the very fact the it validated what I was feeling was enormously comforting. This book did not tell me what to do to get over the pain, rather it explained the common feelings that go with grief and assurance that what I was feeling was normal and it would get easier. I have shared this with friends who has lost loved ones and everyone says it's one of the best books they've read.

If you love New Mexico, you'll love this book.
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.

Ms. Dodge Lujan wrote this book in 1935, from her home in the Taos valley. She spoke from the heart, describing everything around her, from the beautiful Sacred Mountain outside her bedroom to the geraniums wintering in her windows. You are there with her, especially if you've had the good fortune to experience New Mexico in person. Mabel had an enthusiasm for her life, a fresh perspective that touched me deeply. She moved in quite a famous circle of artists, many of whom she introduced to the area. She referred to them on a first name basis, so it was a little difficult to understand who these people were, but fun, too, as I tried to match "Georgia" or "Freida" with a legend. I highly recommend this book; it's a perfect snowy afternoon read. Make sure you curl up on your sofa and have a Kitty or a Pooch at your feet - and don't forget a marvelous cup of coffee!

I am a Homeschool mom and we are studying the West at this time. The "Best of the West Biographies" are absolutely wonderful. My kids, ages 7yr & 11yr, don't want to put them down. My husband even read through them, and he hates to read! They are true and very easily read with great pictures. Elaine Landau lets you know fact from fiction, she also tells you when no one knows for sure what happened. She does a very thorough job. We checked them out at the library, but I am buying them as gifts for my children, they loved them so much. We checked out other books, but these were by far the best. Each book is about 42 pages and divided into 6 chapters. I highly recommend this series!

As both a "fan" of astrology and numerology, this is by far the best book on detailing someone's personality just by the day they were born. It gives specific "details" that are somewhat eerie.....just check out the dates for people close to you as well and you will not believe it. A few of the things I read were a bit unsettling, but a MUST read.
