A Valid Neuroscientific Tool to Add a Few Years to Your Life

Even if you don't get the book, try the experiment. Get their bracelet (or use a jelly bracelet, or one of your own) and put it on your wrist. Each time you catch yourself grumbling or complaining or criticizing something or someone, put the bracelet on the other wrist. In my first day, I must have changed it 7 times in the first hour. I was shocked, and intrigued...enough to try it for nearly a week before I gave up. That was a year ago, and I still think about that bracelet every week. And yes, I'm far less critical than I used to be. Now, I do neuroscientific research on meditation, spirituality, and optimism, and I think that this little gimmick is a gem. Why? Because every time you foster a critical thought, your brain releases a cascade of stress chemicals which eventually damages the very circuits that control anxiety and irritability. So a little exercise like this can have a profound effect on neural functioning, which is why Andrew Newberg, MD, and I talked about the Reverend Bowen's bracelet and his vision of a complaint-free society in our book, How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings from a Leading Neuroscientist. Oh, and one more thing, which we thoroughly discuss in our book: every time you complain in public, your irritability-like a virus-is neurologically picked up by every person who hears your voice or sees your face. So by all means, train your brain to be optimistic and positive because (according to 30+ years of longitudinal research conducted by Duke University and the Mayo Clinic), it will literally add years to your life.

PS: Check out their website (acomplaintfreeworld.com) for tips for teaching children to become "complaint aware." Interestingly, a Missouri congressman was so impressed by the idea that he just introduced a bill into congress calling for a "Complaint-Free Wednesday," the day before Thanksgiving. I hope it passes....

We the consumers deserve much better service than the average American business is willing to deliver. In this book the author will teach a lot of great tactics on how to get fabulous customer service from any merchant. It's a bill of rights for the consumer. You'll learn how to complain effectively(by phone, in person, by mail or e-mail), how to get refunds when you feel you received rude service, and who to contact if you need help fighting a merchant. This was a wise investment. I recommend this book.

I found this was an easy-to-read, easy-to-put-into-practice book. The information was to the point and could be utilized almost immediately. It makes an excellent reference book to have around the house for problem solving. I used the suggestions that were outlined for two hassles I was having. One with a car dealer and the other with a dry cleaning establishment. Both turned out well for me.

Elements of Florida Civil Causes of Action and Defenses

Book Review - South Florida Association of Law Libraries

In the course of drafting complaints, Florida attorney Arthur L. Berger found himself researching the elements of various causes of action and saving the results in a file marked "Elements." He noticed that he kept referring to the file over and over, making him wonder if the material ought to be compiled into a book and made available to other Florida litigators. The result of that compilation is "Elements of Florida Civil Causes of Action and Defenses," now in its second edition.
The book lists, in alphabetical order, well over 100 causes of action recognized in Florida. Under each cause of action, the elements are enumerated for each DCA [District Court of Appeal] with citations to case law from that DCA. Also listed are defenses to the cause of action, related issues, and references. The book is the result of over 3,000 hours of research and the pay-off is enormous.
The author claims that he uses the book himself in preparing complaints and in considering what alternative causes of action can be asserted in a complaint. "The various causes of action are the arsenal of the litigator," Berger claims. "With a list of the elements of the cause of action, a skilled attorney can efficiently prepare a complaint that will withstand a motion to dismiss." From a librarian's perspective, the book provides the perfect answer to so many types of reference questions we hear from litigators: "What are the elements of fraudulent misrepresentation?" "What are the defenses to an action for tortious interference with a contractual relationship?" "Are the elements for negligent hiring the same in all DCA's?" The answers are all here, in a format so convient and so organized that it warms a librarian's heart.
The book is published by the author and is an excellent investment. If your library does not have a copy, run don't walk and buy one. If you already have it, by another--one to circulate and one to keep in your office under lock and key.

This is definitely the most unique book of poetry that I have read to date. The author uses poetry to express the defendant¹s version of a real-life case that occurred at a middle school in California in the year 1996. You can read this book two ways, as fiction or as fact, she outlines how in the start of the book.

How to Retain Your Customers with Tact and Diplomacy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-05
Customers expect to be treated with courtesy and respect. And most are quite polite themselves. But sometimes, customers can be so blunt or denigrating that you or your employees may start to feel offended and upset. Regardless of your own feelings, it's best to respond with tact and diplomacy.

If a rude customer catches you off guard, it can be hard to think fast enough on your feet to respond effectively. The solution is to try to anticipate the kinds of remarks they might make, and consider in advance how to reply. This book steps you through that process. It describes numerous possible customer service interactions, and explains how best to handle them - and why. As you read about one awkward situation after another, you'll find the book quite entertaining.

Adding to the fun is a section at the end that lists some really peculiar questions that have been asked by actual customers. There is also a section on how to behave as tactful customer yourself, and thereby motivate the best possible customer service for your own benefit.

If you are involved in front-line sales, customer service, or supervision, this book should help you handle a broad variety of awkward situations, and reduce the amount of stress you experience in your dealings with customers.

Unjustly forgotten

This is the reprint of the edition published in 1797, with engravings of William Blake. The poem itself, enormously popular in the 18th century, is now shrouded in obscurity, and it stays in print only due to Blake's illustrations. But despite of its unpopularity, I found it quite enjoyable. It is best read in one sitting, without interrupting the constant flow of ideas and thoughts. It is a meditation, at once introspective and all-encompassing, a contemplation of Death, Time, Friendship, and Immortality of man. Granted, it does tend to drag on too much in the last chapter, but the first ones are so good they're worthy of being memorized. Blake's engravings, surrounding the text as a frame, capture the essense of the poem and at the same time enhance it, adding to it even more depth. The poem's abstract concepts take shape, making some passages more memorable. (This edition includes a commentary on the pictures' symbolism.) The book is worth getting for the engravings alone; it is a work of art in every sense of the word.
