Classic Walks of AustraliaReview Date: 2001-07-02
Classic Walks of Australia gives a detailed description of the walking conditions to be found in each state and highlights travel arrangements, climatic variations and notable geological and historical features in the region. Each walk is illustrated with a coloured map and listed with a summary of attractions, distance, time, fitness ratings, topographic maps required and contact details for further information (including campsites and equipment).
Walks vary to include those in desert landscapes, rainforests, alpine areas, tropics, coastal paths, mountainous regions and offshore islands; the variety is stunning and provides a wonderful cross section to the varied Australian landscape.
Classic Walks of Australia is a very beautiful and motivating gift for any bushwalk enthusiast from anywhere in the world.

Wonderful Useful Information!Review Date: 2002-01-03
After ordering and returning 'Architectural Design for Tropical Regions' by Cleveland Salmon (avoid Salmon's book, unless you don't already know that "the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense"!), this book came to my rescue.
Packed with detailed information and design strategies, along with good illustrations, this book is well suited to architects or well-educated laymen (it is NOT written at a grade school level). I was at first hesitant to order this book, as little information was provided by Amazon. After reading it cover to cover more than once, I'm happy to recommend CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN as one of my two best books for hot humid building design.
(The other favorite is COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social & Thermal Delight. Not just a "pretty picture book," Courtyards contains lots of highly useful information (charts, graphs, formulas) as well as wonderful color & B&W photos, plus line drawings.)
Climate Responsive Design has provided a wealth of solid, useful, pertinent information while working on projects for the Yucatan, where the climate ranges from hot humid in the summer/rainy months, to warm humid in winter/'dry' months, to WHEW in April & May (hot hot hot & maybe humid or not).

Having been raised north of the Equator, I was enchanted by a summertime Christmas in Australia when a US Navy assignment took me to Hobart and Fremantle in December. This book brings back memories of that time.
One of the highlights of "Christmas in Australia" describes the wonderful tradition of Carols by Candlelight.
The book is richly illustrated with full-color photos. One of the featured carols is "O Little Babe of Bethlehem," a warm climate version of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" that describes Aussie wildlife and flowers that bloom in December.
And sweet wild clematis starry-eyed,
With delicate ferns we'll bring;
Our wattle trees shall shower their gold
In tribue to our King.
Recipes in the book include Shrimp on the Barbie, Crabmeat and Spinach Roulade, Frozen Christmas Pudding, and the traditional Pavlova, a meringue confection topped with kiwi fruit, strawberries, passion fruit pulp and whipped cream. Some of the six recipe cards feature Cream of Carrot and Honey Soup, Orange-Mint Salad, and Crown Roast of Lamb.
Collect the whole series for your home library and re-read them every December.
