Overall I would highly recommend.

This book is absolutely perfect for traveling in or around Sydney. Its small size belies its extensive information pertaining to nine major neighborhoods in metropolitan Sydney (City Centre; the Rocks & Circular Quay; Chinatown & Darling Harbour; Inner West; Surry Hills; Kings Cross; Darlinghurst & Around; Paddington & Woollahra; Bondi Bronti & Cooge and Manly). Each of these neighborhoods comes with a readable inset map and descriptions of sights to see as well as places to shop eat and have fun around the given area.

If all of this wasn't enough, the rest of the book contains a brief rundown of Sydney's history and culture as well as things to avoid while in the city.

I will be spending 10 months in Sydney starting in March 2008 and I can tell you that this book will never be far from my person.

Lonely Planet seems to me to be the most thorough of the guide-book publishers. The Guide to Queensland, the state that covers the northeastern part of Australia, is no exception. I think the town plans are particularly good.

Obviously purchase this book if you intend to visit Queensland only. I travelled for a month covering, Brisbane, Surfer's Paradise, Cairns, Cow Bay, Daintree, Cooktown, Undara, & Mission Beach. The information on hostels, transportation, things to do and see, and maps were right on. I used this book extensively and highly recommend it.

Beautiful book

Beautiful, large, coffee table book-Appx 12"tall x 10"wide x 1"thick.

From the first faltering flight by Wilbur & Orville Wright to the jet-powered giants of today which soar across oceans and coninents in a few short hours, the lore of flight is a fascinating one. It is a story of failure, disappointment and even tragedy. But it is also a story of courage and determination and eventual triumph. It has all the drama, suspense and excitement of the best fiction.

This book is divided into four main sections covering the historical background, the structure of aeroplanes, engines and equipment, and finally a chapter on flying today discussing all aspects of a typical transatlantic flight and in contrast, the technicalities involved in flying a small aircraft.

Beautifully issustrated with over 200 color technical drawings andover 150 black and white drawings, The Lore of Flight also contains an index with more than 1,550 entries supplementing the main text. Entries include details of important military aircraft, the symbols of the world's leading civil airlines, the major airports of the world and the pattern of the runways.

This valuable work is a tribute to the flying history of many nations as well as the men and women who pioneered aviation in every corner of the earth.

A great book to learn everything you'd want about flight

Not only does this book detail the history of man and flying, it also tells you everything you'd want to know about how planes work. There are great illustrations showing how engines, airports, wings, navigation etc. work. Anyone who loves or wants to know more about planes and flying needs to read this book.

I read a Polish translation of this book when I was 9 years old, re-reading and re-re-reading it many times. Many years later, having migrated with my parents to Australia, thanks to that book I was very familliar with Australia's early history, seeing me well into high school. As well as that I became very familliar with new Zealands history of white settlement, as well as some history and geography of South America. This book is Verne at his best.

This man is a genius! Not your everyday cardiologist, he is interested in *preventing* heart disease, cancers, osteoporosis, other dread diseases and so on. If you take care of your cells, all these problems can be reversed and as a by the way, you WILL lose weight (if you need to), you WILL gain more energy than you thought possible, and you WILL have a healthy body for life. In this he explains the why's, and also the important how's. He gives precise details of what needs to be done and the results that can be expected. This is a most fascinating book, and I recommend it to anyone who breathes! To breathe is to live, and therefore it is a forgone conculsion that that you need to read this. I have seldom been so certain of a dynamic book to beat all odds. NOW is the only time to get this!

I picked up this book at Stansted Airport and was already absorbed by the time I got to the check-in desk. Riveting account of a reporter in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The author was actually in Kabul on September 11th, 2001. It was very refreshing and fascinating to learn the fears and thoughts of a war reporter on the politics leading to the 'Crusade' against 'evil-doers' and the way the press can and will manipulate images to increase ratings. Also very honest and even touching portrait of people who are so often ignored or misunderstood. The author also manages to reveal a fantastic sense of humour in the face of adversity.
Some of his accounts related to his girlfriend sounded oddly familiar, until I realised I had read her book ("Holy Cow") months ago, which deals with her adventures and quest for the meaning of life after moving to India to join him!

The Book Description on this page is wrong. Here is the correct one taken from Amazon.co.uk:

Synopsis
Jonathan Harley knew that becoming the ABC's man in South Asia at the age of only twenty-eight was a dream job. But he'd just fallen in love and wasn't so sure he really wanted it. It took a weekend of soul searching to realise that this would be the experience of a lifetime. From covering India's endearingly over-the-top response to the death of cricketing legend Don Bradman to being the only Australian journalist in Afghanistan on September 11 2001, Lost in Transmission is Harley's exciting, often moving, funny and disarmingly honest account of the three years he spent, lurching from one hair-raising misadventure to the next, reporting from one of the most exotic and, as events unfurled, alarming corners of the planet. Shifting effortlessly between the serious, the sublime and the ridiculous, this is the story of a stranger at something of a loss in an even stranger land - a young man struggling to comprehend and comment on life in a part of the world that never quite makes sense...

Funny, frightening, and insightful!

Part travelogue (with a touch of humor), part current affairs, "Lost in Transmission" has the perfect combination of intense vs. not-so-intense moments. It is enlightening about the roles of India and Pakistan in the escalation to the "War on Terror" and these countries' interaction with the Taliban. It is also, in parts, a travelogue about south Asian countries and what it is like be a reporter in remote locations. You have to be careful about reading the book in public places, however, because there are portions where the author will have you laughing out loud at the ridiculous situations and cirumstances in which he finds himself. I hope Harley writes more books because it will be a waste of a great talent if he does not.

One of our students' (www.kidsnclay.com) parents shared this book with me and I was delighted with its message. It is exactly the same philosophy that we practice here at Kids 'N' Clay and were pleased to see it articulated in such a fun an charming way!

The message is powerful ... about the empowerment and positive emotional development that comes through uninhibited creativity and acknowledgement of the uniqueness of each individual!

An utterly charming book

This is an utterly charming book - it reminds me of The Orange Splot. The illustrations are clever and vibrant and the story will resonate with anyone who views the world from outside the mainstream. This book deserves to be a classic and I am going to buy more copies to give as gifts.

I finished this book a few days ago, and liked it so much that my husband thought he'd read the first few pages. He found he couldn't put it down, staying up until 3.00 in the morning reading it!

Written by the producer of the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," it's an insider's look at the challenges and amusing absurdity of trying to get a film made about an off-beat subject (drag queens) set in a remote part of the world (the Australian outback) long before anyone suspected it would be a worldwide smash hit. From Cannes to Broken Hill, the book gives a taste of what life in the movie business is like.

Very fun and entertaining - a great read!

I loved this book! I am a calligrapher and amateur bookmaker, and found this to be a valuable addition to my library. The pictures and text instructions are clear, and the projects were interesting and fun. Projects included cards, gift boxes, and mobiles, as well as some more advanced craft techniques. The author focuses on easy-to-obtain equipment and materials, making this a good choice for beginners like me. I also found it a good volume for sparking my brain when my creativity flagged.

I had a summer design class and since the class was so condensed, we designed and constructed projects on a daily basis. For my final project, I had to construct a book. I only had 2 days to do it and since I knew I wanted to make my own papers, I needed some direction. I used this wonderful book and not only did it have very clear directions with concise illustrations, the supplies needed were on a very practical level. That means I didn't have to purchase extra supplies I probably would never use again. My book turned out so beautiful, I got an A+! I now make papers as a hobby and I owe it all to this great book.

One of the most comprehensive and descriptive treatises on a complex hunter and gatherer society, which until recently was still pursuing a traditional lifestyle, largely unaffected by European influences. Although scholarly in intent, this work is eminently readable as it takes one deeply into the world of an ancient culture, and most particularly into the fascinating religious life of the Mardu Aborigines of Australia's Western Desert, one of the world's very last frontiers. A truly exquisite ethnography, a must read for those interested in human ingenuity in surviving and thriving in one of the world's most difficult environments. I highly recommend this extraordinary account, for its empathy and deep appreciation of the human condition.
