I have purchased a few different free-weight books and this is the only one worth the paper it was printed on. This book covers all major muscle groups and dedicates a chapter each to muscular anatomy (important for visualization and isolation of muscles while perfoming the exercises) and building routines to match your fitness level - you will not outgrow this book. The explanations for each exercise are thorough and easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone beginning a resistance training routine.

This book is great if you want to do a series of exercises to tone different parts of your body. The book has 40 exercises altogether. To perform the exercises you'll need so 3 or 5 pound weights, an unweighted bar, and some ankle weights (you can substitute with cans of soup, a broom handle, and some towels or something around your legs in the beginning). I found the exercises great as they each target a different muscle. This was a great addition to my cardio routine.

When I was expecting, I heard everything about pregnancy and birth EXCEPT for the emotional aspects of maternity. This book filled in the gap for me. When I went through the moodiness, the mixed feelings, the soaring joys, and even the disappointments of this major life transition, this book paved my way. I own two copies and recommend it to all my childbirth classes now!

A Unique Book!

I have never found a book (and I own many, many on the subject!) about pregnancy and childbirth, and the adjustment to parenthood that covers the emotional changes as well and as thoroughly. Stern covers things never touched on in any book I've read, and does so with humor and an openness that is refreshing, regarding her own pregnancy experience and those of friends. I plan use information from this book in my Childbirth Education classes, and can't thank Ellen Sue Stern enough for writing this book.

When the Dr. told me she thought I had Endo, I went out and got a book to explain what endo was. This book is really wonderful, it is very easy to read and taught me a lot about what endo was and what the different ways to treat it are. I found this book to be really informative.

The painful mystery of endometriosis

Review Date: 2007-11-23
Endometriosis is the type of gynaecological disease that many women will only hear of when they are diagnosed with it. Some women will experience relatively few symptoms, others will be extremely unwell much of the time. For some women, though, the disease can impact on fertility.

Ros Wood and Lorraine Henderson have written a great book (this is the second edition) which provides a wealth of information to both sufferers of the disease and their families and friends as well as to health carers.

Back in 1980, when I had my first definitive diagnosis of this disease, there was very little 'plain English' information available to sufferers. This book is amongst the best I have read on this topic.

Highly recommended to all who either suffer from endometriosis or know someone who does. It would also make a useful inclusion on the bookshelves of groups concerned with women's health.

A Girlfriend's Guide to just about everything!

Girlfriends Unite! This book is packed with information on how to make each part of your life extraordinary. I recommend this book for married women, who can then disregard the dating chapter and living together references.

I also found some very interesting information on pregnancy and related issues. An entire chapter is devoted to depression, aging and stress. There is information here you just won't find anywhere else. I advise overlooking the things which might offend a more sensitive soul, because there is so much more that you will enjoy reading about.

You will also learn how to communicate more effectively with your partner. This is definitely not a book you leave around the house for kids to find. There are also some things men just would not enjoy reading about. We have to keep some secrets. Trust me honey!

The author was very descriptive beginning with her early detection all the way through her reconstruction. She covered every angle of her ordeal, which I found fascinating and so easy to understand. Unlike reading a 'medical book', this book expresses the author's thoughts and emotions which I found very comforting. Any questions I had in my mind were answered in this book. I felt like it was written by me/for me. Even the time frame was identical. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I high recommend it not only for breast cancer victims but also for friends and family. It will help them understand our fears and the physical aspects of dealing with this disease.

A YOUNG Woman's Journey through Breast Cancer

"Facing Fear" is an excellent read for young women facing Breast Cancer. It is unique and refreshing because it is written from a young woman's perspective---and it reads like a novel! I recommend this book because it eloquently explains the emotional journey, the importance of support from friends and family, as well as the physical journey. It also gives some practical information about radiation and bi-lateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. While "Facing Fear" is not structured and written as a step-by-step guide, it is an excellent account of one woman's journey from diagnosis to completion of treatment. This book will give young women (and their family and friends) support and information about facing Breast Cancer. Bravo!

This book shows that in a spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ there is really no long term pain in the death of a loved one; but the sacred and divine opportunity of completed healing, for the ones who love them. The perfect book for the Alzheimer patient and their family.

I cannot begin to tell you how very much I enjoyed reading this book. Once I began reading,,I just couldn't put it down until I totally completed it. This book has touched me and brought out many emotions of smiles, laughter and tears and I can relate to it as a chronic caregiver.I recommend this book to everyone not only to people who are in caregiving situations for a member of their family having Alzheimers...but for all family sicknesses.

Life with a spoonful of humor...

Review Date: 2007-02-15
Barbara Bradlyn Morris has a talent for capturing moments of her life in snapshot stories. This collection is filled with nostalgia, a few tears and plenty of laughs. She explores memories of childhood, remembers being out late at night in a field of fireflies and tells stories of canoe trips.

I loved the stories about how her mother taught her family recipes and there is quite a poignant moment where you are almost stunned by one sentence. The warm comforting stories lead you through numerous life experiences filled with mishaps, surprises and awakenings.

The delightful stories of the Siamese cats are especially cute. Barbara Bradlyn Morris is a woman who has traveled the world and danced in her kitchen. She faces challenge and makes choices that guide her life in interesting and new directions. Memories of yard sales, Christmas trees, dieting and even a funeral in Japan are included in this collection. Through her eyes, we view the world with a little more humor. I think this book is Barbara Bradlyn Morris' best book yet!

Laugh-out-loud essays for every woman

Review Date: 2006-12-09
Women everywhere will glimpse themselves in this warm, funny book of memorable moments throughout the life of Barbara Bradlyn Morris. From capturing the essence of a reunion between two adult women whose lives have taken different paths, to resenting "Mrs. Clean," the neighbor with neat rows in her freezer, Morris has a knack for nailing life experiences with both humor and poignancy.

Morris's life has taken her across the world, but she weaves the threads of our common humanity wherever she goes and lets the reader experience the thrills, joys and sorrows in vivid prose. This is a woman who has seen the treacherous waters of Cape Horn, had her first anniversary dinner in a German schloss interrupted by the pathetic wails of her kitten, and pushed past her insecurities to engage in the ceremonial customs of a funeral in Japan.

"The Fattest Baby in the Bronx" makes for great bedtime reading and would be a perfect gift for any woman.

Raw Without Hype!

Review Date: 2001-02-12
If you want the low down on natural diet and its benefits WITHOUT all the pushy hype that many authors feel is necesary, then this is the book for you. It is down to earth, practical, useful and genuine. There is no "you should do this", but only, "here are some ideas, this worked for me, that for her, and the other for him." It tells you how to discover your own path and put together your own ideal diet at a commitment level YOU feel comfortable with and not the authors' level. Even though it has to be shipped from Britain, it is well worth it.=)

Passion for Raw

Review Date: 2001-01-07
As a living foodist who's read practically ever raw foods book over the past 30 years (eat-sprouts.com), I loved "Feel-Good Food" where the authors' passion is human potential and making this diet workable for everyone, no matter where they're starting from.

The book's focus is on Intuitive Eating--What is it? Why is it so powerful? It shows you how to overcome internal blocks which prevent you from moving forward into all-raw. It's the perfect introduction to the raw food diet and will answer most, if not all, of your early questions on how to transition to raw foods.

Karen reports on her web site: "When you're living this way you really do feel as if you can achieve anything you set your mind to, and sometimes the enormity of what I feel bowls me over! Let it be known that I am not privileged or different or anything 'special.' I am just an everyday woman who wanted excellent health and went after it. It's honestly as simple as that, and it can be YOURS just as easily."

Karen Knowler went slowly from an extreme junk food diet through to all-raw vegan. Karen's history is interesting--including healing herself of borderline cervical cancer at age 22.

Like a personal trainer --- only more economical!

Review Date: 2000-04-25
The subtitle of this book is "Gearing Up A Level" and that's just what following the recommendations in this book will do! This is an essential volume for any woman cycling enthusiast (including Spinning/indoor cycling nuts) who is ready to do a century ride, AIDS ride, race or something similar but who isn't sure where to start -- and can't afford to hire a coach! The only disagreement I have with the author is some of the nutrition recommendations (being a vegetarian myself -- she recommends more of a "Zone" approach). But this does not detract from the overall excellence of the book, especially the bike fit chapter -- as someone who works part-time in a bike shop, I have helped other 'gals' who have run the gamut at other shops and been totally frustrated trying to get a good fit! My recommendation is - if you're 'gearing up a level' and planning on buying a new bike - buy this book first, read the bike fit chapter (or better yet, bring the book with you when you're trying out bikes) and THEN buy your dream bike!

An Engineer Reviews " The Female Cyclist"

One of the advantages of a Coach, who is educated as an Engineer, is their ability to bring science to the art of Coaching. This Gale Bernhardt has done, in "The Female Cyclist". By taking the Scientific Literature and distilling it into a readable text, Gale has written a body of work that will certainly stand the test of time among female cyclists.

This book has been needed ever since parity was acheived in Sports. Gale Bernhardt covers all the areas that the guys just don't understand. Her writings on bike fit are outstanding and very gender specific. If you are a women cyclist who wants to become fit and very fast, this book is for you. If you are a guy who wants an excellent description of periodization of training read this book. I have watched my wife apply Gale's concepts to her own training and I now get dropped by my "better half". Most of the women who ride with our group swear by the weight and nutrition programs in Gale's book. Weights, training, nutrition, periodization of training and bike fit are all there in "The Female Cyclist".

If you are a women who wants to become a better cyclist, the chapters of bike fit and nutrition alone are worth the purchase price of this book. This book is a must read for any serious women rider. This book fills a gap in the available serious literature for female athletes and is long overdue. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of this talented authors writing career.

Jim Green is the author of the Engineering Text: "Bicycle Accident Reconstruction and Litigation, 4th edition.
