As a training Lactation Cunsultant in a local hospital in Israel, I have been working with breastfeeding women for over two years. Often, differences in opinion between the Nursing Staff and Lactation Consultants surface. I found this book to help promote one uniformed goal; the breastfeeding mother. With all of Ms Biancuzzo's up-to-date research and information, and with the book's easy to read format, this book is a welcomed addition to my library.

Unputdownable!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-06
This is a book about the different ways the diagnosis of ovarian cancer affected two active members of the lesbian community in Melbourne in the 1990s. When Maureen O'Connor was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February 1996, she delayed going to hospital so she could appear in the Performing Older Women's Circus production, 'Still Revolting'. The C-Word describes the daily battle Maureen (Maurs) fought over the next two-and-a-half years.

Maurs grew up in a working-class family in Melbourne, worked in the public service, and later became head technician in the Women's Circus.

When her partner, Jean Taylor founded the Performing Women's Circus (POW) in 1995, Maurs moved on-stage and became a clown.

The C-Word is an honest and forthight account of cancer. It deals with the loneliness the partner of a sufferer faces, the gruelling treatments with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and the terror and calm of facing death. A story of a powerful partnership, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of community.

Reading this book is an emotional experience, and it is utterly unputdownable.

A brave, intimate account

I started to read this book on the weekend and found myself unable to put it down. For me reading the story of two lesbians, one with cancer, the other caring for her was extremely powerful. Their honest account of the treatments left me sitting with my mouth open. I was especially interested with Maurs obsession about losing her body hair and her delight when it began to grow back. This books is written as a diary, the style works well and like the back blurb says C-word is 'utterly unputdownable'.

Women Need a Strategy

Review Date: 2007-03-06
The helpful point in this book is that it discusses the consequences of female castration. I would disagree with the Journal review above that says the book is emotional and unbalanced. What I suspect he is looking for is the unemotional and balanced discussions that is otherwise available and says we should end reproductive function, disturb normal pelvic integrity, alter hormonal and neuroendocrine functions, and enslave women to a liftime of drug therapy at the slightest sign of non life-threatening conditions. While the author does highlight the risk to sexual normalcy in the book, you will pick up the other risks when reading the stories of the women she interviews. This book was written in 1986 and eventhough we are in 2007, nothing has changed. I think this book attempts to explain that much is at risk when one agrees or is conned into the surgical procedure hysterectomy. A woman risks her life, her family, her relationship, her career, her education, and her dreams. Women individually or collectively need to come up with a strategy for dealing with our reproductive health from menstruation to post-menopause, the medical community have shown in their unemotional and balanced articles and studies - that women's best interest is not on their list of concerns.

I had a Hysterectomy when I was 24 years old. Life for my entire family became a living nightmare. No one told me what to expect. I was suffering from post-hysterectomy syndrome for seven years and didn't know it. When my therapist handed me this book I was immediately intrigued. I too had considered myself "castrated". After reading the first five pages, my life was forever changed. It was as if everything suddenly made sense. I don't know if Mrs. Stokes is still with us, but I would like to tell her Thank You. You are an amazing genius. Thank You Thank You Thank You. Any woman who is having second thoughts, or Uterine/Ovarian problems, with the scare of Hysterectomy hanging over their head MUST read this book. You will be able to make an informed decision.

Survivors personal stories are very encouraging
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-17
I am slightly biased in my review of Celebrating Life, as I am one of the survivors whose story is told in this book. Sylvia Dunnavant poignantly related each story mostly in the survivors' own words, allowing the reader to feel the pains, the fears, and the joys expressed. I've had the honor of meeting most of the subjects in the books, but I literally "know" them from their stories...I FELT what their words expressed. Even now, I continue to go back and read about many of the experiences in this book. As I look back on my own bouts with breast cancer, mine seem rather minor compared to some of the women's stories. (And there is one MAN's story as well)!

Sylvia did a beautiful job of photography. All the photos were taken by Ms. Dunnavant. The book is, of course, about SURVIVORS "celebrating life", and that celetration of life is reflected in all of the photographs. At the time my picture was taken, I was bald, but the eyes, the smile, and the expression Ms. Dunnavant captured express HOPE and JOY, and an appreciation for life! This is seen throughout the book in great color photos of each survivor. One other point: the age range of the survivors is from mid-twenties to late eighties, which should interest all age groups.

It's a book in which the reader has the freedom to skip around without missing anything. Start at the back, or in the middle and read the stories in whatever order you like! Each one is it's own personal saga, and each photo is there to put a FACE on the story.

Someone you know is bound to benefit from these encouraging readings. It's a wonderful gift for women who have been diagnosed, who are going through treatment, (AND for their relatives), or for those who are now looking forward to the years ahead as survivors. AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN NEED to read about life AFTER SURVIVING breast cancer - a life of fullness and hope - and focused on truly CELEBRATING LIFE! During this month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), I urge you to give this book to someone you care about - I promise you, they'll be pleased to receive it.

I was deeply moved and want to share it my friends

I read this book when it first came out. It was given to me by a very dear friend who later died himself with cancer. Now I have 2 friends who have been diagnosied with cancer and knew that I had a copy of this book in the boxes somewhere, and wanted somehow to share it with them. Not sure how it will be received by one, but will make the gesture to send it anyway.

I have been very blessed to have read and remembered how the people noted in the book expressed hope and were able to convey how they felt, the anger, the saddeness, the hope, the pain and through it all came out willing to share with others. That is a true blessing.

I now think that somehow I might be able to help in some small way to look for ways that I might be a light for those while I am able. Not that right now I have the problem but sense there is a need to share.

The book was funny, interesting, suggesting things I have not thought about to help me not be on a diet.

She includes her family too, and as we all know it takes the whole family to help to not eat junk food, etc.

have sent copies to other women and they all loved it.

I even met the author when I was in Hawaii and she signed my book and I talked to her. What a wonderful, interesting womem.

The Circle is Sacred was amazing to say the least. My daughter and myself spent about a week reading and learning from this book for a school project. Scout is truly one of the most loving, honest and free spirited people I have ever gotten to know. You will be so captivated by each chapter and the special sayings included from many different people will truly bless and speak to your soul. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? BUY THIS BOOK!

Review Date: 2000-03-19
Drawing on ancient wisdom and contemporary spirituality, this illustrated book provides a host of resources to link the reader with his or her own power and that of an ever-widening circle of women and peace makers. Included are chapters on honoring the Circle, making drums and rattles, making prayer bundles, ritual cleansing, music, dance, sacred acts, games, creating altars and other sacred spaces to include healing, visioning, manifesting dreams, storytelling, entertainment as high medicine, giving, and earth etiquette. This guide to ceremony is the outgrowth of medicine women gathering from around the world. Its text is augmented with words of wisdom from Alinta, Australian aboriginal medicine woman, the late Princess Moon Feathers, Cherokee centurian, Mahisha, Hawaiian elder, Grandmother Kitty, Seneca elder, the late Colonel Lyn Gunter of the U.S. Air Force, and many others. Dr. Scout Cloud Lee has captured her magical ability to lead people to their highest potential through ritual.

This book is like a pocket (almost) sized version of my maternity nursing textbook. Very practical size to carry in your bag or keep in your locker if you are a new nurse or a nursing student. Covers health promotion, conception, pregnancy and complications of pregnancy, labor and labor complications, postpartum and postpartum complications, newborn assessment, complications and nutrition, and medications. This book also has an English-Spanish translation appendix, cultural beliefs appendix and nursing dx section. Pt teaching is also addressed at various points throughout the text. Handy, handy, handy!!!
