World limnologists predict that the global water supply will, by 2060, cause greater concern to human existence than a shortage of fossil fuels. The Anandrous Journey is a highly readable adventure about a female protagonist and a zoology professor who managed to triumph over everything from the sexism of the early 1900's to physical dangers encountered on scientific expeditions. Her study of microscopic plankton continues to be a vital ecological factor in determining the projected life of Earth's bodies of water. How Hattie Bell Merrill, a petite five foot tall women, stood up to her male counterparts is described with amusing and revealing imagery of the moral, social and professional mores of her era.

Hattie Bell Merrill stood barely 5 ft. tall from her men's boots to the top of her pompadour. The author describes her delicate 100 pound frame as, "usually encumbered with camera and specimen gathering equipment as she trekked through hazardous, unknown terrain." She traveled by steamship, river boats, cog rail and horseback to areas where few white women ventured. She mingled equally with peasants, wealthy industrialists, natives of the rain forest and men of letters and science. When Merrill ventured out from her sepia-toned academic community in the North to the vivid spectrum of the tropical Amazon and South America she stated,"It was as liberating as loosing the constraints of my corset stays and changing into a shift." This is a biography that will make the reader want to cheer for the heroine who coped with obstacles more of man than of beasts.

I think this can be a very useful tool to someone who is experiencing a difficult situation in his/her work place. The author gives many ideas and suggestions of ways to deal with your anger and the symptoms which go along with that anger. I also feel that the case studies are interesting since many people may be identify themselves within these descriptions. This book also gives many resources which can be very useful to one who may need additional help.

Anger in the work place is an excellent resource for men and women in the work place. Anger is an issue that effects all of us in mostly negative ways. Althought anger can certainly be a positive catalyst for change, generally speaking anger creates unnecessary stress which can manifest itself in unhealthy ways. Overeating, drinking to excess etc, are examples of how unresolved anger can manesfest itself in unhealthy ways. This book helps people manage their anger in positive ways. The author recommends simple steps which are very helpful on a daily basis. The book is written simply and is to the point. I recommend this book for anyone who struggles with internal and unconscious anger. A thumbs up to Ms. Leslie!

When you're diagnosed with breast cancer, the first thing you learn is that confusion and disagreement abound in the medical community, regarding both risk and treatment. Deciding on the right course of treatment, therefore, can be a frustrating experience.

Patricia Kelly arms you with information, dispelling the myths and rumors most of us have heard about cancer. She makes sense of mind-numbing data and statistics, presenting them in a way that is understandable and clear. Twice in ten years, Patricia has helped me sort through study findings, assess my own risk, and base my treatment decisions on fact, rather than feeling. If you're wondering about breast cancer risk, her book will do the same for you.

Every woman should read this book, especially if she has been diagonosed with a controversial "precancerous" condition such as atypical hyperplasia, DCIS or LCIS. Dr. Kelly presents a very readable, up-to-date review of the most important medical research on these problems. A patient who has a critical understanding of the material in this book may very well be more informed than her doctors. She could gain the confidence to say "no" to an unnecessary mastectomy, or to other harsh and disfiguring treatments that are recommended for a problem that may never pose a threat to her life.

Dr. Kelly has written a wonderful book which every woman concerned about breast cancer risk, and every health professional who cares for them, should read. In Dr. Kelly we not only have an acknowledged expert in her field, but one who is both thorough and also able to express herself very clearly. In a calm, reasoned way she cites the major literature in this field and dissects it for the intelligent lay person.Away from the sound bites and buzz phrases that spout from the popular media and the self-proclaimed gurus on this topic, she presents an up-to-date analysis of what is really known about breast cancer risk. I recommend this book highly. M. Ellen Mahoney, M.D.

This book is well presented and full of interesting facts. Although aimed at the layman it uses rather a lot of medical terminology and certainly hits hard. If you have the misfortune to have one or more auto immune diseases and want to be informed about the course of your illness, the medication available and the research into new medication and possible cures, I would certainly recommend this book. However it is not for the faint hearted!

I found this book quite helpful in sorting through the maze of symptoms of various autoimmune disorders. It even helped me to self-diagnose one I did not know I had. The information is well laid out; it is comprehensive and current while not overly scientific. The cross reference of other automimmune diseases is particularly useful.

This book is a must-read for all who have or suspect they or family members or friends have an autoimmune disorder. It is presented in a very organized and efficent manner and is helpful to the patient as well as the health care professional.

It is obvious that the authors have throughly researched all the materials necessary to present accurate, unbiased and essential information. The book is well organized, cross-referenced and covers autoimmune disorders from A to Z.

In addition to the book itself, the resources listed in it are priceless!

Even after being a Myasthenia Gravis patient and coping with the disorder for years, I learned more about Myasthenia by reading this book. I also gave my doctor a copy! Those of us with autoimmune disorders should make it priority read!

The interviews with patients were especially helpful and those with health care professionals were excellent. The possibility of a female having an autoimmune disorder is much higher than that of a male, so the book's main focus is on women. However, it is extremely helpful to men, also.

My family and friends now understand much more about my disease. Congratulations to the authors on a much awaited and much needed book.

The content of this spirited piece is filled with necessary wordy explanations of inline skating moves. The book "shows" as much as it "tells" with full page photographs illustrating the basics throughout. It goes beyond skating, actually, as it encourages all women to get off the couch and "into the streets where they belong." The underlying them is people moving from depression, oppression and personal challenges into the light of acceptance as they expand their personal paradyms. Davis' fun-loving wit and enthusiasm make this book a fast and interesting read.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Babes on Blades". The piece that is worth the price of the book is how to get up. It is not so simple when your feet are rolling every which way. Just read a few simple paragraphs, look at the photos and you will be back on your blades in no time. I thought the pictures were very good at explaining things and I appreciated all of the safety hints. For someone over 5, this is a must-read book. If you are younger, just have someone read it to you.

This is the perfect book because it gives you easy and practical ways to improve your general appearance which certainly improves your general mood. My wife read the book cover to cover and has recommended it to all of her friends. She especially loved the "beauty buddies" section, which reminded us how friendships are important in the connection to our look and well being. Perfect book! I suggest all husbands buy this for their wives.

This book helps to show you how to do both and is a very fun read, and that comes from a physician who sees complications and disorders of the mind and body every day.
May take away some of my business... but it's worth it to me if folks finally get the message that beauty is not skin deep. Of course looking good does help the psyche as well... hey, maybe there really is a beauty-brain loop here! WELL DONE!

I felt pretty "down" after receiving a diagnosis of osteoporosis. After reading this book from cover to cover I realize all the things I should have been doing--and not doing. I liked the clear explanations about supplements, alkaline diet, and weight bearing exercise. I'm following the directions, and I'm full of hope. Also I'm ordering four more copies to give to my daughters and daughters-in-law. I want them to avoid that dreaded diagnosis.

I purchased this book because five doctors, one who was a Bone Specialist in a revered Boston hospital, first told me my osteoporosis was arthritis, and when I (not them) insisted on a bone scan, the diagnosis changed, and they told me, "learn to live with it. Look how old you are," followed by a kind smile, pat on the forearm, and perscription for Fosamax, which is a drug that should not be taken with your eyes closed. Your bone density will remain the same, but the drug always leads to more brittle bones and it blocks your body's ability to rebuild bone 100%. Within two and a half weeks, the drug gave me shocking side effects, and I was told, "that can't be from Fosamax," an answer that was condescending, cavalier, and WRONG. I was in my late fifties, unable to walk without painful limping, or remain upright more than four hours at a time. Desperate, I surfed the internet for information, and found many sources, including this miracle book. I discovered that my myriad symptoms were all bone related (headaches, gall stones, kidney stones, leg cramps, joint pain, bone pain, etc.) and not one of those doctors knew it, or at least did not acknowledge the condition. My diet was always healthy, but now it is mega bone healthy, which includes foods I never would have guessed (a tiny example: yams, watermelon - yes. Cheese - not necessarily.) That along with changing when I eat (suggested in the book) and accupuncture for bone pain, has restored my vitality, and allowed me to reclaim a productive future. Amen.

Dr. Susan Brown is an anthropologist who notes dietary and lifestyle differences in Western countries, which exhibit widespread osteoporosis, and Asian countries, where this disease and various problems (including menopausal discomforts) seem rare. She emphasizes that osteoporosis is not a normal aging process nor a strictly female malady. She explains that the building and breakdown of bone is a continual process intimately related to many body processes. She lucidly details the mechanisms of this "bone remodeling." She discusses risk factors for osteoporosis: heredity, body type, sedentary lifestyle, SAD (Standard American Diet), endocrine imbalances, and hormonal disturbances (abetted by tubal ligation, hysterectomy, ovarectomy). Brown notes early signs of trouble in small items like weak fingernails, irregular periods, excessive plaque formation, leg cramps at night, lower back pain. She advocates various modalities to reverse osteoporosis by whole body approaches involving maximizing nutrient intake, strenghtening the disgestive system, and developing an alkaline diet. She cites specific studies on progesterone (Dr. John Lee) and nutritional supplements (Dr. Guy Abraham) and exercise (Dr. Dalsky). This book is clear enough for the layman with ample references for the professional. The book gives you insight to what is happening inside your body and how you can take steps to stop or reverse osteoporosis. Dr. Brown's "whole body balance" approach will have you stepping out, enjoying veggies, and learning about soy and progesterone on the way to stronger bones.

Good bone health requires more than drinking lots of milk or taking calcium supplements. Dr. Susan E. Brown explains it all in her book, Better Bones, Better Body, a "comprehensive self-help program for preventing, halting and overcoming osteoporosis."

A medical anthropologist and certified nutritionist, Dr. Brown currently directs the Osteoporosis Project and the Nutrition Education and Consulting Service. She says that osteoporosis is a "needless disorder [that] barely exists in much of the world." It is "a disease of Western civilization created by our lifestyles." Because it's a disease we have created, it is one we can eliminate.

Dr. Brown says her extensive research enables her to say that "I now know that osteoporosis is preventable and that it can be halted once begun. I also know that it is to some degree reversible." Her book details precisely what causes osteoporosis and how to prevent its development.

Although many of us think of bone as being something that is solid and unchanging, it is actually living tissue. Old bone tissue is constantly being dissolved and replaced with new bone. Dr. Brown says that "every atom in our skeleton is replaced within a three-month period." While calcium is certainly a key player in building new bones, it doesn't work alone. At least 17 other nutrients are needed. The standard American diet either doesn't provide those nutrients, or provides them in inadequate quantities. Not only are most Americans slighted on the essential nutrients, they consume too much animal protein. Calcium is actually withdrawn from bone tissue in order to metabolize protein, which contributes to the development of osteoporosis.

Dr. Brown explains how to evaluate your personal risk of developing osteoporosis. She offers hope when she says "it is never too late to begin building healthy bone. Even the aged confined to wheelchairs have been able to build bone mass with simple exercises and modest nutritional supplementation." Dr. Brown then provides comprehensive instructions for individualizing a program to suit your needs. The basics of osteoporosis prevention and reversal are sound nutritional practices and regular strength-building exercise. Dr. Brown offers guidelines and examples for making those basics a part of your lifestyle.

Not only is Better Bones, Better Health a must-read for every Western woman, it's also essential for men and adolescents. Buy a copy for yourself, and extras for your loved ones--help banish this unnecessary disease from your life and theirs.

Sophie and Audrey are not the first people to come out with a non-diet approach; in fact, intuitive eating and listening to your body has been advocated for a long time (e.g. Cherie Martin's book "Naturally Slim" from 1995, or any of Geneen Roth's publications, or similar books written by the German psychologist Doris Wolf). However, I really like the no-nonsense and no-pressure approach that these two sisters apply. They say it as it is, and make it easy for readers to identify with the subject matter. Sadly there are no workshops here in the US (yet), but their book finally got through to me and I have at last decided to ditch the diet mentality and to really try and live more intuitively and freely. Thank you so much for the wonderful inspiration!
