Betty Kamen has written an easy to read reference to women's hormones, how they work, what they do, and how to naturally enhance hormone deficiencies. You'll even get a chuckle here and there :)Did you know that "For reasons not understood, age at menopause is significantly ealier among left-handed women than those who are right-handed." Read on!

A must-read for all women.

Betty Kamen's book is an intelligent, insightful, and well-written overview of the world of hormones and health.

Taking issue with the tendency of physicians to over-use estrogen as the answer to women's problems, Kamen demonstrates, with clear scientific evidence, that natural progesterone is actually the hormone we should be using.

Betty Kamen's book is easy-to-read and highly informative on every aspect of the subject of female functioning and hormones. Her conversational style and the many illustrations made this scientific book read like a novel! Highly recommended - whether you're having menstrual problems or are menopausal. progesterone is actually the hormone that needs supplementation.

What Your Doctor Won't Tell You

Review Date: 2004-11-01
Betty Kamen has written a great book about estrogen, progesterone, PMS, menopause, and osteoporosis, which was based on research. Betty states, "Impressive evidence now validates beyond a doubt that progesterone, progesterone-like extracts, and certain herbs can correct a deficiency which is proving to be the real cause of PMS, the real cause of menopausal symptoms, the real cause of osteoporosis." Most doctors treat their patients by writing prescriptions for drugs manufactured by the major pharmaceutical companies, which in this case may be synthetic estrogen. One problem with synthetic estrogen pills or tablets is that only a fraction will be absorbed by the body because of "first-pass" removal of foreign hormones by the liver. These synthetic estrogens have also been shown in many research studies to increase the risk breast cancer and other forms of cancer. Your doctor is unlikely to tell you about the benefits of the natural progesterone which cannot be patented by the pharmaceutical companies. Progesterone is an important building block in estrogen production, and when progesterone levels peak in the menstrual cycle, there will be 140 times more progesterone than estrogen. Diosgenin, which is a Mexican yam extract, has been made to match natural progesterone exactly. It is safe and when used in a transdermal or cream form does not have the "first-pass" liver problem. The application of natural Diosgenin in a cream base with other synergistic herbs has shown incredible success as a hormone replacement therapy.

Better than bestselling fiction is Ronna Snyder's book for women in midlife crises. Its one hot handbook of `heaven-sent flashes" of insight unlike anything I've read. The author discusses the mysteries of menopause and how she dealt with them successfully, though not without periods of perplexity. True stories open with quotations that Snyder calls a "Power Surge," much like a shot of estrogen. A concluding section tagged "Mental-Pause" provides facts, resources and actions for the struggling midlifer. The book is a gentle blend of information, personal experience, and believable accounts about the God who sends life-saving support to get us through difficult phases of life. As I read each entertaining chapter, I was either near tears or just plain inspired. She writes to the reader, whom she addresses as "girlfriends", with freshness, style, humor and intelligence. As a post-menopausal mama myself, I learned even more that helped me clarify the whys and what-fors of my own midlife challenges.

Am I really going crazy or is my family making me this way?
I thought I was losing my mind!I thought my husband and family were making me crazy! In 'Hot Flashes from Heaven' Ronna helped me understand the hormonal changes that were happening to my body. My husband now understands 'me' better during MY 'flashes from hell.' I can now relate and deal with my emotional craziness and I am more at peace with me. I loved the book and couldn't put it down. She is a lifesaver in my time of turmoil.

What a wonderful book, I couldn't put it down. Ronna made me laugh, made me cry, made me go WOW that's why I do that... The best part about Hot Flashes from Heaven was it got me to listen more to those voices in my head. They aren't just voices, that's God trying to direct my life, to give me insight on what is happening in my life. Thank you Ronna. You have a huge servants heart and I was truly blessed to read you book. Thank you. Teri Troyer www.Spokanebiker.com

This book reaches well beyond connecting with those who have experienced a similar loss. It is a compelling story for everyone to read who wants to experience a full life. The emotions that the author feels while going through her process are unfiltered, and real beyond what is politically correct in these circumstances. It is as if I were living in her mind and heart -- as if the experience was my own. This is the only book I have read in one sitting in a long time -- I couldn't put it down!

An excellent memoir that is both refreshing and helpful for those people who are experiencing the death of a loved one from a terminal illness. There is no glossing over the author's feelings-they are raw, real, and significant. The beauty of the book is that it provides a person's real experience, not a theoretical experience. More importantly, it explains a person's grief, and the realization that people do survive the pain. This book is highly recommended.

I've just finished my second reading of "In Sickness & In Health," and wanted to express to the author, Gail Lynch, my sadness for the loss of such a wonderful partnership, and my appreciation for the forthrightness with which she shares such intimate and moving details of Bob's final struggle, and her own struggle, and the struggles of their families. Her straightforward narrative offers the reader familiar yet bizarre scenes in a way that lets the reader bring her own emotional life to the account. I can imagine that this book will help many readers find the humanity and sweetness in the nightmare.

I think writing this book must have taken a lot of courage. I look forward to sharing it with my colleagues.

The One That Will Last

This is the best weight loss plan I have ever followed... and believe me, I've tried them all. I tried all the "fad's" (including the low-carb Atkin's diet) and sure, each time I'd start out all gung-ho and lose a few pounds, but eventually I'd burn out and gain it all back (and then some). But the Lazy Person's Plan is different, it's a very sensible, easy to follow lifestyle program that brings lasting change. I stumbled upon this book a few years ago, lost 25 pounds, and have never had to buy another diet book again! It taught me how to think about eating and exercise so it just became a part of me. If this worked for me, it will work for anyone.

People would stop me in the street and tell me how great I looked and ask me how I did it! That was about 5 months after I started reading and following the lifestyle changes in this book. I gave away so many copies of this book that in the end I had to find my current copy through a special book search! The first time I read this book, developed a passion and followed the programme, I shed around 70 pounds in a matter of months, was healthier than I've ever been, felt better, looked better and it wasn't that hard. That was 20 years ago and for one reason and another I'm back to trying to lose that weight again. So I tracked down this book - which is the ONLY diet book that has ever been truely helpful or motivational or followable for me, and I'm looking forward to looking, feeling and living with great health again! I suspect it will take about 6 months this time.

How should Christians view childbirth? Is "natural childbirth" some fad started by hippies and humanists? Should Christians use midwives? These were questions that were being batted around by a group of us fairly new mothers back when I was pregnant with my second baby. I wish I'd had this book then. It presents a Biblical view of childbirth...a view that tells us that childbirth can indeed be joyful. Is this pie-in-the-sky stuff only for "earth mothers" or women who delight in "toughing it out" or being martyr-like during labor? Not at all! I have had the sort of joyful birth that this book describes and teaches. If you want to be inspired and taught on a practical level about childbirth and its significance for Christian families, this is a must read.

Wanna know what the Bible REALLY says about childbirth?

If so, read this book! The late Helen Wessel studied the Scriptures in their original language, and discovered the truth about Eve's "curse". The first half of the book is written as a story, about a young Christian couple expecting their first baby. There is alot of information to be picked up in the story, and even more follows in the second half of the book.

Part 2 has such chapter titles as "Childbirth Through the Centuries," "Childbirth in the Bible," "The Medical Model," "Family Sheltered Birthing," "Birthing God's Way," "The Joy of Natural Childbirth," and "The Joy of Breastfeeding." One of these chapters alone makes the book worth buying. All of them put together makes it a must-read, even if you are not planning an unmedicated birth.

I read this book when I was pregnant with my second child way back in 1970. After having a medicated birth I knew their had to be a better way. With the help of books like this one, plus Grantly-Dick-Read's Natural Childbirth. I had a wonderful birth experience with my second and third child. After eons of being taught that we must suffer as part of the curse its great to learn and realize that it is labor; hard work. Very helpful book and a great inspiration. God is awesome. Men may think they've got it made by not having to have babies but to me it was an truly awesome, spiritual experience that I wouldn't trade for a million $$.

Although some of the experiences chronicled in this book are "too good to be true" it was a most valuable read for me. I wish I had read it sooner!! The relaxing techniques really helped and the key for me was welcoming a coming contraction rather than tensing against the pain which I did with my first two children. Having had natural childbirth for all three of my children, with no pain medication whatsoever, and having read this book before my third child, I found it worth its weight in gold! Had I not read this book, I wouldn't have managed the 4+ hours at 9cm.

I know nothing about midwifery and, being over 80 years old, I also have no interest in it. However, I am a New Hampshire resident and felt that I'd like to read a book written by a fellow-New Hampshire-ite! What a surprise I got! This book is so well written, it fairly sings. I literally could not put it down. This is a courageous woman who has lived her passion. She is an inspiration to women everywhere especially those breaking into male dominated professions. She makes our state proud.

I've known the author, Carol Leonard, seems like - all my life! She is an exhilarating woman and excitement and fabulousness just follow her around!
I can totally see these things happening to her, thru her, because of her. She is a catalyst and well known in our State for all her work - pioneering midwifery and bringing it to the forefront of our legislators and the lay people.
I didn't know much about midwifery and STILL this book is a wonderful read.
You don't have to be a midwife to enjoy this story of love and life. You just have to have a pulse.

I became engrossed with the book 'Learning to Walk Again' as soon as I began reading it. I read it in one sitting. I learned about the difficulty of getting a correct diagonosis when dealing with various doctors and hospitals. And how you have to be persistant. It was a nightmare for Ann because of the pain she felt, until a diagonosis was found.Patients must not be seduced in believing that they just need therapy, and that it's all in their head! This book is on the cutting edge when it comes to information about Guillain Barre disease. Ann's first hand experience with the disease will help patients and families struggling with similar issues. It will act like a road map for them. It will help them to push and ask questions of their doctors. The book is well-researched about this little-known disease.
In addition to the excellent information this book shares, it also delves into the important relationship between family members and how supportive and helpful they were to each other. Caregivers carry a heavy burden, and this book discusses the give and take that is necessary between partners and other family members.
I also liked the writing style. Although the topic was difficult, the writing style was easy and conversational and even touched on humor. I visualized many of the scenes, a great indication of a good book, which this certainly was.
I recommend this book to anyone who has a family member or friend suffering with this disease or other challening body problems.

I am going through recovery from GBS. Reading this book has been a great experience for me; once a received it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Ann's experience is very similar to mine and her book helped me in a therapeutic way; I re-lived many emotions, situations, funny moments, etc., and learned a little bit more about this syndrome. I recommend this book for people who are going through recovery as well as for those caregivers around them.

A beneficial book for survivors and caregivers

Review Date: 2003-03-11
As a fellow GBS survivor, I was eager to read Ms. Brandt's account of her experience. This disease does not discriminate when it strikes, and every person has a different journey. I suppose when you've been struck with such a life-altering experience, from out of nowhere, you seek connection and explanation.

The book touches upon the elementary aspects of GBS, and poses some important questions. Like Ms. Brandt, I spent a good deal of time while in my recovery stage trying to prevent what had happened to me from happening to others. She reaches out to others who are in the acute phase of the disease through patient visitation, to other survivors through meetings and symposiums, and to the medical community through this book.

Why had we been promised that we'd "get it all back"? Why isn't post-rehabilitation fatigue addressed as a separate phase of the syndrome?

This book asks some important questions, and I hope that its publication will serve as a catalyst to get them answered.

Not only does this book appeal to readers who are not in a crisis situation, it is insightful and honest in it's approach to what a family goes through waiting for a loved one to recieve an organ, specifically a heart. The writer immediately pulled me into her circumstances. It is written in a way that I understood what she was going through as a wife, living through this experience her husband was having. I see through her eyes the fear and the hope, the pain and the sorrow, and her faith in the Lord to pull her together to take care of her husband and their children, her home and their life. I honestly recommend this valuable and insightful tool for anyone involved in waiting for a transplant, or anyone involved in this process.
