Thank you for writing this book. I only wish you had years ago. Perhaps I would not have suffered fear and anxiety in silence. This book is informative, well written and brutally honest. Thanks for sharing your journey about menopause and how being introduced to the sport of tennis made a difference. So much wit and humor. One knows the truth when one hears it. I heard it.

I couldn't believe how I related to this!

I really, really enjoyed reading Menopause, Sisterhood and Tennis. I mean I really enjoyed it and I'm not your target audience. But I gotta believe a few million women of any age, of all races, creeds, shades, abilities economic levels and then some...when they hear about it, will be able to relate even more than I could (and I was surprised how much of it is general that I can relate to) and tell all their friends to buy their own copy. I know I will enthusiastically recommend it.

Getting through Menopause

Alice WIlson-Fried tackles the private subject of Menopause in a very refreshing manner. How surprising that her husband would rise to the challenge and hand Alice a Tennis racket.
We often forget that support and nurturing exist, but we must make ourselves available to accept that help.
Even if you don't pick up a racket, it is clear that you can find strength and support in a group of other women. All of us go through Menopause and most of us find it to be a very stressful time.
My thanks to the Author for sharing her very private story.

Winning Over Menopause

Review Date: 2003-10-21
With the age of fifty looming in her future, the Alice Fried-Wilson had begun to become undone. This laugh out loud book shows how her first support system, built on myths had to be overturned.

Alice's memories of her mom's warning about "The Curse" and "never trusting women, unless they were family," struck a strong chord with me. It surprised me to find out these myths are universal. Alice is African-American and comes from Louisiana, while I am white and come from New England. But, I, too, had been warned of the dire miseries of menopause by my mother. With menopause youth is gone, so is beauty, and yada-da-yada-da-yada. The grey hairs, the rickety bones, the depression, the mood changes, the loss of libido. What's left?

Well tennis for one thing. The hero to our heroine in the book is, of course, the author's husband, who couldn't stand her moping around the house any longer, and said, "Tennis anyone?"

"Are you nuts?" Alice replied. The man was obviously insane, but to pacify him she took tennis lessons, even though she considered herself athletically challenged.

I recommend Menopause, Sisterhood, And Tennis for any woman before, during and after menopause. It's filled with tips from acing hot flashes to lobbing off those extra pounds. Alice Wilson-Fried handily gets through menopause and finds a new support group with the women on her tennis team.

Comprehensive, balanced, readable, an outstanding book!!

Every profession should be so lucky to have someone write a book like this! Rooks has comprehensively and sytematically reviewed the scientific literature pertaining to the care of pregnant and birthing women and the issues of from whom, where, and under what conditions they receive care from health professionals. She writes in a readable, straightforward manner that makes her book useful and accessible to consumers and health care providers. The author is a Centers for Disease Control-educated epidemiologist and a certified nurse-midwife who has evaluated maternal and women's health programs abroad and conducted several major research projects in the United States.

Judith Pence Rooks has written the best book available in the subject of Midwifery. It is a complete history, and is extremely well-written. It includes a comprehensive bibliography. For those of us who have had multiple home-births it is an invaluable resource. This will doubtless be the standard reference for years to come. We hope it will encourage the home-birth movement, and the use of mid-wives, as a safer alternative to physicians, in the United States.

Intelligent guide on how to raise a family
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-28
Earlier this month, I had seen Vendela interviewed on television promoting her new book. It has been nearly a decade since as a young girl I had seen her in the advertisements for Elizabeth Arden that my aunt had said I resembled, perhaps of the Scandinavian background. That I have kept the colour couture bag my grandmother had given me as a gift, and she asked the salelady if she could have an extra bag as she adored the pink and purple colors designed on it, and the saleslady obliged. My grandmother had passed away, and I kept both bags together, and recently I used my bag as a gift bag for my younger cousin.
As I am not a frequent television watcher, and was fortunate when I did I saw her new book at just the perfect moment for a gift, as an older cousin of mine is having a baby at any moment now. Vendela writes with uncanny candor and warmth. Proves that one can't always live up to other people expectations of what they think you should look like. You'd drive yourself crazy. You have to feel good abut yourself. And, prove that you can be thin and fit after you have a baby.
The desk top style book offers clear advice, and recipes for everyday. It is perfect to give as a gift. And, in accompaniment with another book on your shelf entitled: "A Model For Better Future," written by another successful model, Kim Alexis on how to live a wonderful life in an certain world. Each of these books has wings!

Very Wholesome

This book is surprisingly not at all model-y. She presents motherhood in a very wholesome and natural way. Clearly promotes breastfeeding without being pushy. I found the eating and exercising tips realistic, do-able and very effective. The recipes are great if you are a relaxed cook (no exact measurements). The emotional parts are real and sincere, everyone can relate to them. Written in a relaxed girlfriend-to-girlfriend style, this book is a breath of fresh air. Frankly, it's more useful than some of the "What to Expect"-theme books.

I am the mother of a 10 month old. I wish that I had this book months ago. My experience was similar to Venedela's. It's an honest book that does not sugar coat the challenges of motherhood. Being a mother is the best job in the world. It is not always easy. I appreciate Vendela's honesty!

Easy tips and quick results

Review Date: 2002-05-21
The book is first of all very nicely done. The tips and exercises are simple and quick to get started with. I appreciate the fact that she allows us to see some real pictures of her being not so beautiful. I wish there were more meals on the go in the nutrition area. As long as women realize that she has a natural beauty that many of us do not have, then you will appreciate where she is coming from a little more. It's almost impossible to do all of the things we need to do for and with our bodies and especially with little kids underfoot. This is the perfect book to combine with the new revision of Mommy-CEO, 2001, by family expert, Jodie Lynn. The two only adds to the whole family routine of taking care of mommy. Mommy-CEO shows us how to get the kids motivated and Model Mommy shows us how and what to do to take care of ourselves. Both authors stress mommy time and creating space for moms.

Takes a irregious view of typical neuorses. Certainly not meant for those who have serious problems. But if one is on the edge of having an obsession, but does not feel that it is serious, this book may lighten their concern. I really have enjoyed this fun book.

We all have them: those obsessions and compulsions that are ridiculous but seemingly essential aspects of our daily lives. This book is that rare blend of a "Stand-up Comic" with expertise and it makes you laugh out loud with an "I'm Guilty" but having fun getting caught kind of laugh!

As a lawyer who often carries 2 cell phones and every other gadget that will supposedly give me more time to "relax," I found myself compelled to give this book as a gift to 3 friends after reading just a third of the material. It's fun to share and easy to pick up and flip to any page for a quick smile.

Be forewarned, however, this book will remind all of us that we take ourselves a bit too seriously!

I love this book!

I picked this book up the other day, and all I can say is that you need to read it alone. I laughed out loud so many times that I had to keep on showing jokes to my girlfriend when she asked what was so funny.

There are lots of books that make you laugh like this one. What makes this one special is that it manages to lampoon the kinds of people we all know (see the "Pets are People too Delusion"), and also offer subtle commentary on our over-analyzed and hyper-medicated society. Its definitley worth picking up.

First let me say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Nan is not the stereotyped femdom you might be thinking of though she can clearly dress up and put on a well-scripted and eleborate scene. The descriptions are not pornographic though they are careful to mention both physical and emotional aspects of the scenes. There are both male and female submissives and bottoms discussed throughout the book, the most extreme scene involve Nana and her primary female lover (she also has a husband). It should stimulate your mind and your groin so be prepared. I would have been better if Nan had gotten more personal -- why she does it, what it feels like to her, how she has changed over time -- as the title suggests.

This is the first book I've ever read that I feel is real. This woman has experienced what she has written about. It is NOT fantasy. She has honed her skills to a point that she is an expert at the exchange of power that is paramount to a BDSM scene. This book isn't all about pain or bondage. This book isn't all about fantasies. This book is about power, control and sensuality. You hear about her feelings while she is doing what she is doing. You hear about what her bottoms are feeling. You learn how she gets into their heads and hearts. I'm amazed at the candor with which she writes. This woman is obviously gifted with an amazing power, and is amazingly generous in sharing it with the public.

I received this book for a birthday gift and I was pleasantly suprised. Mistress Nan is real and very honest with every scene and in her own desires as well. I don't want to spoil the book, however every scene she describes you can "feel" some of the pain and humiliation that her slaves endure...espically Alex. There are 8 chapters dedicated to her, describing their various scenes/relationship and how Mistress Nan is on her own personal conquest to "break" her.

An educational and entertaining book

I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone struggling with an eating disorder. I cried, I laughed and I felt for the author as she and her family struggled with anorexia. I greatly admire the author's strength and have shared it with several friends. Finally, a book that truly displays the struggle an anorexic faces first hand!

I am a 17 year old recovering anorexic and I really enjoyed this book. I have experienced much of the same turmoil as the author and it helped having someone to relate to. Many people let me down along the way also including my school counselors and so-called friends. They just didn't understand what it is like living with an eating disorder. I had counseling which was good, but it reached a point where I realized I needed to help myself. Again, I could totally relate to the author. My parents and good friends supported me all the way. I don't think I would be here without them. Anorexia is a lonely disorder because very few people understand it. This book was good for me. It also gave me continued hope. I admire the author's strength and courage to talk openly about anorexia. I wish the book was longer and had more stories about her daily struggle. I recommend this book!

This book should be on the hands of every growing and conscious woman. Usually, we take so much care of others, that forget about ourselves.
When menopause arrives sometimes it overwhelms us because there are so many changes taking place at the same time.In my case there were more changes between my 48 to 53 years, than the rest of my adult life( between 20 to 40). And that`s too much.
This book is about giving us the caring and love we deserve. We are the life givers of humanity !!!! So buy this book and you will treasure it as a gift of love to yourself.

This book is well-organized and has tons of questions about the field of maternal-newborn nursing. My only problem (which obviously it's huge, as I still give this book 5 stars) is that the answers and their rationales are all at the END of each chapter, instead of on the same page a sthe question. It still is a wonderful study material to help you pass your class.
