Maryam Webster is fun to talk with because she's so knowledgeable and passionate about what she does and who she is. Her long awaited book, "Everyday Bliss," was published in May. I immediately bought copies for my wife, Linda, and my two daughters. If you don't yet have the book, I highly recommend getting it. Here's what Linda has to say about "Everyday Bliss."

* * * * *

You're gonna wear this book out. Highlight it. Mark it up. It's full of "how-to" gems. I absolutely love Maryam Webster's book, "Everyday Bliss for Busy Women." Let's start with its user-friendly format. At 5×7, it's a handy size that feels good in your hands. The book is nicely laid out and inviting to read.

I like that, "Everyday Bliss" is written by a woman especially for women. Sorry guys, but society expects women to play and juggle more roles in life than men. Women also have different needs than men.

"Everyday Bliss" starts out explaining why it's important to create bliss in our lives and balance our energy. We can choose to take the time to focus our energy instead of reacting and dispersing it in different directions. Maryam talks about the toxic effects of negative energy as well as negative beliefs and how harmful and limiting they can be.

What I like best about the book is that Maryam shares her knowledge, providing specifics for cleansing and relieving tension, plus ways to create everyday bliss using cutting-edge methods like EFT, TAT, ZPoint Process and others.

Ultimately, this book is about getting in touch with your spirituality. "Everyday Bliss" is a soothing wave of caring and encouragement. I wish I had a beautiful tool like this when I was in my twenties or thirties. Maryam, thank you for sharing your life experiences and methods, reaching out to the women of the world to show us that there is a way of being, doing, and having a life of everyday bliss.

I was given this book by a friend who's been listening to me gripe about... what was I griping about, I forgot... oh yeah, forgetfulness in my 40's. I was a wee bit put off by the realization that I am "that age", but did finally pick it up and thumb through it. An hour later I was still engrossed; I really am "that age" and pretty darned normal! Whew! I had thought this was the beginning of the end, physically and mentally. But I see that's just not true, I'm FINE! I WILL be able to sleep again, and the random pins & needles in my arms aren't so random when you take an informed look. This is a very accessable book, I felt like the information was available for regular folk who don't want to have to study this topic. The writing style feels like you're having a visit over coffee with a smart but grounded doctor friend. I highly recommend this book.

A good friend (also of a 'certain' age) sent me this book as a gift. It's an easy read with information broken up into short subsections and deals with
more than just menopause. There's a lot of traditional health and medical info , but also sections on alternatives to hormone replacement therapy. I especially like (and need) the tips on sharpening your memory. Based on what I"ve read so far, this book is really reassuring that I'm NOT sick and I'm NOT going crazy and there IS life after menopause.

Encouraging and comforting

Even since I got it, I've been picking up this book to do quick look ups for answers to questions I've been most curious about, and also browsing, stopping to read whatever catches my eye. Either way it is easy to use. It is so well organized, with a detailed table of contents and good index. I'm finding out all kinds of things I never knew, even though I'm thoroughly in the menopause experience already! So much useful info, for instance, the tips on stress management, health concerns, and unwanted facial hair (rogue hair indeed).

Mostly I appreciate how I can pick up the book, open it to anywhere at all and read something interesting. And I love the way the author injects some welcome humor into a serious and complex topic. I find the tone encouraging and comforting, as when talking about social concerns of perimenopause and being a member of the "sandwich generation." I'm glad I have this book handy. I just wish I'd had it in my hands about ten years ago when changes were just beginning. But even now it is full of great reminders to pay attention to my health and be gentle with myself.

I just got my copy of the Everything Health Guide to Menopause and find it very readable and user-friendly at a time in my life when things can get a little confusing (and a bit scary with all the changes). I'm not sure how the author packed all the information into this book, but it's all here. I can skip around or read whole chapters. I especially liked the sections on sleep interruptions. There is a glossary, index and websites to use if I want more info. i highly recommend this book, which is going on the nightstand.

Review by former Physiology Teaching Fellow....

Review Date: 2007-05-07
When I was in graduate school, I was a Teaching Fellow in physiology and went on to further studies in biochemistry. I also attended medical school for a while, but ended up working as a research scientist. Now, I teach meditation and have a developed yoga practice in addition to being a personal coach with graduate education in psychology as well. In short, I think I am well-qualified to evaluate this book.

In general, I love this author's work and particularly liked Anatomy of Movement. I didn't like the Female Pelvis quite as much, but I still think it is very good. If I was able to, I would rate it a 4.5. Like all of this writer's work, the material is thoughtfully developed and presented in an easy to understand manner. There are also lots of diagrams that are very clear and compliment the text.

The difficulty with the pelvic region is that it is very hard to visualize it in three dimensions. This presents a challenge to the author and I think that he does a very good job of conveying three dimensions through all different kinds of diagrams.

The book starts out with the basic skeltal structure and then adds more detail a little bit at a time. At the same time, corresponding functionality is discussed and this keeps the book interesting and helps with memory attention. The average person can certainly go through this book easily, which is a testimony to the clarity and organization of the book.

With that said, I think to really learn the anatomy thoroughly one needs either the experience of dissecting this region or an augmentation of this material with useful photographs that show more detail and how everything fits together. For the average person, this may not be necessary, but for people in PT, yoga, massage or medical-related fields, it would solidify your understanding and help you to lock it in.

One think that is really special about this book is that it is mostly pictures with concise descriptions. The logical development of the topic allows it to flow and it doesn't deviate from its purpose, which is to educate women about the importance of the pelvis, how it changes through the lifecycle and how you can keep it healthy through exercise.

In reality, one book can't be all things to all people. This book is no exception and it is one of the best of its kind. If you are very interested in this area, I would also consider purchasing Pelvic Power for Men and Women: Mind/Body Exercises for Strength, Flexibility, Posture, and Balance. This book has a bit of a different angle, more exercises and more text. I think the two books are very complimentary and if you are serious about learning this anatomy and keeping your pelvis fit, you ought to have both to get the maximum results and understanding.

If you have a deep interest in this topic, you can find more resources on my listmania lists. There are several general anatomy texts all with different strengths and weaknesses listed. This would be useful information for people who need a very in-depth understanding or who have difficulty visualizing three dimensions from diagrams.

This book is so wonderful. I am a pre/post-natal yoga teacher and this book changed how I teach, how I practice and how I look at the female anatomy. It is very technical, and at the same time, quite approachable. I think this book is great for doulas as well. I would not recommend this for moms-to-be unless they have a background in health and/or an affinity towards anatomy.

I was really surprised at how much this book covers!!!
The food advice is invaluable- esp. in increasing Dad's fertility. I love how it also warned about the enviromental factors that lead to decreased fertility for both Mom/Dad-to-be. After reading this, I didn't let dh apply the pesticides/herbicides to our yard anymore.
The book isn't magic, but it sure can help.

Ascetically, it is very pleasing to touch and read, even though it is older now.

Recommend to anyone considering conceiving.

This book has a lot of good info. It has a lot of straight to the point facts and numbers. If you worry a lot like me this book will give you good info but don't take the statistics to heart. It does cover a lot of areas of concern and things you wonder about when you and your partner are considering having a baby. Things to do things to not to and how to prepare your body for pregnancy.

Without anybody or anything to guide me I came across this book and went to see it in person before I bought it. Not only did the colorful pictures illustrate ideas and concepts nicely, but the layout of the book makes this an easy read. I couldn't put it down! I found myself amazed at all the things I learned about the female body. Oh, I can't forget the male body too, that's just as important. One side note, the book talks about possible complications during pregnancy and since I already have high blood pressure, I started to get a little anxiety reading the part about pre eclampsia, a condition you can have during pregnancy (high blood pressure). So when you read this part, just take it with a grain of salt. Otherwise, the book is great and gives you much knowledge on how to conceive, the best time, how to chart it out, etc. This book went beyond my expectations. I'm glad I read it now since I can take some of the advice and become healthy now for our unborn child. I would recommend it to anybody thinking about trying to have a baby.

Celebrating Girls

Review Date: 2000-05-05
Mothers always celebrate our daughters' 'first' birthdays, the 'first' day of school, and many other 'firsts'. Yet when our daughters begin 'first' menstruation, we are uncomfortable and silent. All girls deserve the honor and respect of a celebration as they change from girl to young woman. The First Moon kit gives mothers a complete celebration and begins a new way of thinking for girls (and moms) to love their bodies and their cycles.

With the coming of a new era, it is a time for new rituals in our culture. The power we have as women to create life will no longer be overlooked or diminished in value. The time has come to reclaim our magnificence and the first step in doing this is to honor our young girls as life-giving forces at the time of their first menstruation. This kit gives the new menstruant and mother a framework from which together they can create a sacred ceremony celebrating the glory of being a woman. i wish I had had something like this when I first got my period. My wish is that every woman realizes her own power from the first day her body becomes in synch with the moon. I recommend this book/kit to all women in every culture all over the world.

The First Moon kit is such a simple, yet revolutionary idea. To celebrate a girl's first menstruation with a celebration....how much simpler can it get to put a positive spin on something that is usually such a negative, forgotten, overlooked, neglected, yet hugely important part of each girl's life? This kit contains everything you need to start a life-long celebration of menstruation. This kit isn't just for girls. It is for anyone who wants to re-examine their relationship to their period, or get a group of friends together to discuss their own menarche experiences. it's a wonderful gift!

Rites and Rituals of Passage for Women

Review Date: 2000-04-12
This book and kit by Ann and Helynna offer a wonderfully comprehensive, inspired and creative way to help you gift a daughter or a loved young woman in your life with a rite of passage ceremony to mark her coming into womanhood. (Or, if you never had a ceremony yourself, this would be a wonderful rite to share with peers!) The passage of menarche, a time so often neglected in our Western society, can be honored by using the guidelines, suggestions and tools of this kit. Whether you already have something in mind for a ceremony but need a little assistance getting started, or don't know anything at all about ritual, this kit will help you create a lovely and memorable experience for those involved. Such a special time together will enrich the lives of those participating, and will no doubt have larger cultural ramifications as the initiated woman takes her place in today's world witnessed and accepted by her sisters (blood and otherwise). I highly recommend this kit for anyone who has ever thought that a woman's first moon time needs to be something other than a shameful experience. Blessings to the creatrixes for putting such a beneficial resource out into the world!

I feel very fortunate to have found this very enlightening book about the very serious ailment facing, mostly, the women of our society: OSTEOPOROSIS. Relying on her own family's years of natural bone health, she gives the reader many facts and field results on the "Nutritional Aspect" of treating, and improving our bones throughout our lifetime. Her 60+ recipes are original and sometimes very unique, giving a very encourageing start to, hopefully, a new awareness and lifestyle. I have greatly enjoyed reading, learning, and following her many examples and suggestions, and fixing her recipes...I know I feel better already. Please read this book, you owe it to yourself, and the ones you love!

I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation. I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too. So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.

With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart. I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do. And the recipes look great. I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.

I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".

I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss. Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines. Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensate as efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35

She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't). This information is fascinating.

I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression. I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today. I guess that includes us all. Great job Annemarie!

A must read for those who care about their health

As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the things we put into our bodies every day. The approach she proposes is unconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it. Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy products are freely consumed by the majority. Give this book a read and you won't be sorry!

The content is repeated over and over in different places in the chapters as well as throughout the book, making it easier to remember the main points. "Gender and Health" is both a vital reference and a good read. The book is well-written, understandable for the lay person and expert alike, and indispensable to any health policy discussion, The authors argue persuasively that gender differences in health can only be explained through an interdisciplinary study of both social and biological factors. They focus on gender-specific social constraints which affect life choices which contribute to differences in disease processes in men and women. The book's explanations and arguments are well-organized and clearly presented. Well-crafted tables and figures add vital information to the narrative.

This book will soon become required reading for researchers, policymakers, and others interested in understanding men's and women's health.

This is a wonderful book! The authors have done a tremendous service by pulling together insights and evidence from a remarkably diverse range of literature and science. The result is a clear and straightforward overview and discussion of the complex interplay between forces routinely affecting individuals' and groups' well-being and health. Rather than a laundry list, the authors' review and discussion provides a plausible and easy to understand framework that will help inform choices we all make. Though the book includes discussion of some cutting edge science and policy issues and will be of benefit to scholars and policy makers, it will also be of interest to and enjoyable by readers without any special training or knowledge.

I thought this was an excellent, clearly-written book that provided an interesting discussion on health disparities by gender in a social, cultural, and biological context. It's a great primer for understanding how social policies filter down to individual-level health and behavior. It's often difficult to convey complex topics in a simple and clear manner, but the authors do so effortlessly by providing examples of real-life situations that everyone can easily relate to, making it highly accessible to the general public, as well as health researchers. This is the book to buy if you're interested in gender and health!

I was healthy, young and active when, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The next thing I knew they cut me up, filled me with poison (chemo), blasted me into premature menopause and made my hair fall out. I was so overwhelmed.

A kind friend gave me this book. It gave me a clue about what was happening. I read and re-read it and began to understand my disease. With understanding comes hope.

If you know someone with ovarian cancer -- give them (and yourself) this book.

A great first read after diagnosis. Very informative about the why's and wherefore's regarding ovarian cancer made personal with excerpts from Gilda's Radner's book: It's Always Something (a great second read).

The author writes with authority and compassion, a rather rare combination in the medical profession. A welcomed book at a time when one needs facts combined with heart.

I laughed as I wept; life-or-death questions answered.

One of the most feared cancers is ovarian cancer, with good reason. It may be asymptomatic; what early symptoms do appear are vague, diffuse, and often are not taken seriously by either women or their doctors. As a result, the disease is often advanced before diagnosis occurs--as in the tragic case of Gilda Radner.

This book lives up to its subtitle: sharing personal experiences and a medical perspective on ovarian cancer. The personal experiences are excerpts from Gilda's book "It's Always Something", excerpts from letters to Gene Wilder, and comments from him. I defy any one to be unmoved by these pages. The voice of the cancer victim and the cancer survivor come through, sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, always honest.

The medical perspective, interwoven with the pertinent experiences, is equally valuable. I think it is superb. Dr. Piver has a remarkable talent for clear and succinct treatment of such complex and scary topics as surgical staging, the 30 different types of ovarian cancer, survival rates and alternative therapies. His historical perspective and obvious mastery of the field enable him to answer the most difficult question-- with a minimum of gobbledegook, and with up-to-date information. This book is almost like having a humane and sympathetic gynecological oncologist across the desk.

Of course, this book could save your life or that of someone you love. Information is one of the best weapons we have against this killer. I am in awe of how much information and wisdom these gentlemen have packed into 184 pages. I could not recommend it more highly.

Great source of information

The book explains the experiences of Gilda and Gene. It provides an understandable decription of the symptoms, treatment, and the experience of having Ovarian Cancer. It helped me understand what had happened, and was about to happen to my Mother. How the Cancer could have gone so far with so many doctors looking for a cause of all the symptoms they could not find a cause for, till it was too late

After reading Girl in a Funk, I decided I should get Girl in a Fix. Most days, I never wear makeup because it just takes too long and too much time. But Girl in a Fix gave me simple solutions that I never thought about, for example, using art brushes as make up brushes. Also, I hate painting my nails because it always leave a yellow stain behind, but Girl in a Fix taught me how to fix that - LEMON JUICE! If you want to learn to to make eyeshadow your lip gloss and cheek blush, get this book!

This book is an excellent gift idea for a niece or daughter - really, for anyone who has had to deal with puffy eyes, an unwelcome zit or a bad hair day. The tips are easily accessible and make a lot of sense - I particularly like the scientific basis for most of the advice. The writing style is fun and I would definitely recommend this book if you're looking for straightforward beauty advice that doesn't talk down to teens, but is still useful to us in our thirties.

never thought of that!

I definitely enjoyed and got a lot out of this book. There were quite a few things in it that i would never have thought of before in my life. Also a lot of the fixes in this book are pretty natural are good too, no to mention making things easier to find in your house helps you to spend less money on stuff. Natural things are a lot better for you and this book contained some really great ideas that can definitely help you out of some bad situations and without spending your paycheck on unneeded stuff.

In high school, there are times when you feel insecure about how you look and you can't find ways to fix it. After gym, your makeup is smeared and your oily. After lunch, your breath stinks. And you're also dying for those highlights that all the cheerleaders have. This book tells you how to blot oil by using toilet seat covers, and highlight your hair by yourself. This book helps you find cheap ways to satisfy your expensive desires.
