This is a delightful and uplifting book that any survivor of a serious illness would do well to read. It is a wise and wonderful addition to any library. I cannot express what a consolation it was to me and many friends and relatives who survived disease. I applaud Virginia Goff Green on her wonderful words.

As a cancer survivor, this book is a perfect gift to a loved one who's just been diagnosed with any form of cancer or long-term illness. It reminds the patient that taking care of themselves, both spritually and physically, during the medical journey is so important. Nice illustrations with sparce words makes it a book that has great meaning with very little effort to read. I have this in my kitchen on a book stand, changing the pages frequently, to remind me that it's always good to take a few minutes to "smell the flowers" and I'm eight and a half years from my treatment. Perfect gift --- much better than flowers or candy as it lasts longer!

Delightfully presented, practical information

Delightful is the best word to describe this charming little book. And it is a very strange word indeed to describe a book that deals with the problems of serious, chronic illness, but the combination of few words presented in lyrical style, along with beautiful, brightly-colored watercolor prints of flowers results in a delighful presentation of practical information on a very sensitive subject.
The two women responsible for the book - the author and the illustrator - have "been there, done that". Both are survivors of serious illness and have - along with their families - faced the questions that surround such illness, including the decision to use (or reject) life support and to move ahead with life despite some limitations following illness. They provide lots of practical, insightful information that can be useful to anyone - male or female - facing serious illness and/or surgery, but do so without losing sight of the inherent joy of life which, like the flowers that they use to illustrate emotions, seems to occasionally wilt as we face crisis situations.
The book is more than delightful; it is a charming, useful, practical guide to anyone undergoing a life crisis.
It seems strange to say that I enjoyed it - but I definitely did and plan on ordering additional copies to pass along to friends when they face similar situations. I highly recommend it!

I am thrilled to finally have read a book that examines the root causes of women's food and body issues in terms that I recognize. Finally I feel that I've read a book about what's REALLY happening in my mind as I struggle with dieting and self-image. What Are You Hungry For? closely examines the thoughts and beliefs that shroud women's perceptions of themselves. But the best part is that the book also provides easy, sound, step-by-step exercises with which to alter those perceptions and actually change your behavior, and ultimately your life!

There is hope out there.....

"What Are You Hungry For: Women, Food, and Spirituality" is a true milestone. In a culture that seems to struggle daily with unhealthy, mixed messages, that cloud the perception of women and keep us from being all that we can be, this book cuts through the mire and offers us solutions to our own mental traps. Lynn Ginsburg and Mary Taylor don't merely stay in the "talking at you" mode either. they offer things that you can actually do - practical solutions if you will - that will gradually help undo unhealthy body image problems that many of us struggle with. It is worth noting too, that while the authors are quite serious about their subject, with good reason, they do not get bogged down by taking themselves too seriously. they are wry, witty, and in the process, quite wise. I highly recommend this book. It is certainly refreshing and altogether different than anything else that has been written on the subject of women and body image. It's a must have for women of all ages.

'Accompanying this underlying sense of suffering is a feeling of emptiness. We feel something missing. Inside if us is a void, a longing deep within for some elusive satisfaction. This empty feeling is often experienced physically as gnawing hunger, as if we have a bottomless hole inside. If we fill this void, we must start by asking: what is the source of this feeling of emptiness? For so many women its a longing for spiritual fulfillment that leaves us always hungry and dissatisfied--- We define spirituality as a belief in that which goes beyond our material, corporeal existence, giving us faith that there's more to life than everyday experience. Spirituality is a faith in God, Nature, a higher consciousness, or any other power greater than our singular mortal existence --- When we've lost a spiritual connection in our lives, we may eat and eat in an attempt to fill our inner world. But satisfaction comes only when we're able to rediscover our connection to whatever holds deepest meaning for us'.

This part on page 5 is what grabbed my attention and was a light bulb moment. The only clarification I would make is where she writes 'Spirituality is a faith in God, Nature, a higher consciousness, or any other power greater than our singular mortal existence'. I would have noted any positive God, higher consciousness or power per se, since I think like has yin yang, sun moon, good bad equals or opposites.

I like how the author seeks to educate western women or American women on how and why women in other areas of the world do not have the obesity or eating disorder issues American women have. Like on page 7 'Traditional Western diets fail to resolve the food body conflict because they don't deal with the root cause'.

Page 13 'Growing up in Western society, we're programmed to believe that every problem has a quick and easy solution. Have a headache? Take an aspirin. Coughing? Take a cough suppressant. Feel over weight? Go on a diet. Problem solved.' Of course Americans want it 'now' They want throw away diapers, fast food, and a remote control that changes the channel before you even know what is on.

Beginning on page 101 she shares some easy to do yoga exercises that I have found really do help energize me as well as relax me. More relaxed and energized I am the less interested in between meal eating. I also like her section on page 154 on the importance on becoming still and thankful BEFORE one eats. Some call it saying grace, I call it simply giving thanks and reflecting on the hands that created and brought the food to my plate. I also like how the author reminds the reader that one eating schedule doesn't fit all. I have learned that five small meals per day are best for me, whereas a friend of mine finds two larger healthy meals with two snacks mid morning and mid afternoon work best. And as the author notes on page 158 'a balanced meal is one that fosters good health'.

And finally a reminder in Chapter Ten that 'You are a work in progress' so don't beat yourself up but when you fall, get back up, and keep going.

this is a good book...

...to get you thinking. The authors briefly share each of their previous eating issues and their recovery. They then carry you through the expirince of getting in touch with your deepest needs and desires, which begins with you identifying your "life purpose". You will then incorporate this purpose into the remanider of the exersizes in the book.

From a person who has battled body and food issues for some time, the authors present a new way of viewing my feelings and struggles. Take note that there are many exersizes (which they refer to as "practices") that are time consuming. In addition, to get the most out of this book, you have to be at a place where you are really ready to look at your food/body issues. It is not a diet book, it does not advocate weight loss. The goal, as I see it, is peace.

I personally have yet to follow all the exersizes but believe that when I am ready to truely confront my food/body deamons and take the time for the practices, this will be just what I need. (had i already done more of the exersizes I may have given the book 5 stars).

Gaining control of "head" issues that impact you

I am one of some 185,000 men who annually become involved -- or ignore involvement -- when their wife or lover is diagnosed with breast cancer. This personal account of my experience with my wife, Sandy, provides counsel and guidance for men and women who want to gain the one thing they can control in this situation -- their own heads and thinking. It recounts the issues a man faces such as FUD (fear, undertainty and doubt), treatment options, communications, quality of life, sexuality, dealing with children, getting scared. For the 185,000 men who will encounter breast cancer in their wives or lovers this year -- and for the two more or more out there who have partners that were diagnosed earlier, it's a worthwhile 90-100 minutes to buzz through this book that's charged with emotion.

There are many books that can provide information on Breasts, Breast Cancer and medical treatments. Few give an husband's overview about the entire process from emotions, medical opinions, medical care, making critical decisions, communicating with family and friends, and working with insurance companies. Major issues that need to be addressed in a relatively short time.
This book helps husbands understand what their spouse is about to go through and what they can do to prepare and help through the process. Reading this book helped me be a prepared and actice participant on our journey fighting this desease.

As a woman whose mother is a survivor of breast cancer, I wish this book had been published decades ago! If I had only known about this book earlier, it would have been a remarkable resource to share with my father and sister. In the book, Mr. Weiss bravely talks about his inner most thoughts. These are the thoughts that no one else seems to be brave enough to write about - yet anyone in his situation must be thinking. Mr. Weiss' candid feelings about the loss of intimacy, the toll this disease can take on the children, and his concerns about paying the bills and keeping his career afloat while trying to stay sane are extremely insightful. I strongly recommend this book as it is a wonderful gift on more than one level. Not only will it help a spouse or significant other, but it will help an entire family as it serves to validate how many people feel when faced with this horrific experience. A much needed resource and long overdue!!!

this book is an excellent guide to navigate both an emotional and medical plan when confronted with this disease. it is laid out in a rational clear direction with many of the frightening medical choices explained in an understandable way. i loved the "why didnt anyone mention this" parts of the book; particularly the emotional, pharmalogical and marital components. many people i know have struggled with these issues and would have been helped by being informed instead of feeling alone. the book is written with tremendous love and honesty and offers insight into handling trauma with strength and courage all the while looking for life's positive lessons.

This is one of those amazing books that really makes you pause and think about family, love, relationships and what is really important in life.

It was recommended to me by a friend even though breast cancer is not something that has affected me directly. Nevertheless, once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I was overwhelmed by Mark Weiss's candid, emotional and illuminating account of his and his family's experiences dealing with breast cancer. Although presented in the context of breast cancer, it provides valuable lessons for dealing with any type of adversity in life -- be it a personal health issue or otherwise. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone.

I challenge anyone to get through even two pages of this book without crying. I read it before I did the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2007 in San Francisco. I met many of the featured walkers throughout the walk, and the book truly gave me the inspiration I needed to get through some of the grueling miles of the walk. If you're thinking of doing the walk, or you know someone fighting breast cancer, this book is amazing.

For those of us who participate in 2-day, 3-day, afternoon or morning walks, who fundraise beyond our wildest expectations, and who continue to believe that a small group of dedicated people can change the world, this book is a reminder of all our effort, blood, sweat and tears.

For our families and friends who have trouble wrapping their minds around it, this serves as a powerful teaching aid to make them realize 'why we walk' if they haven't grasped it already.

I had the pleasure of meeting several of the featured walkers during the weekend of October 1st & 2nd 2005 as I participated in my second Avon 2-Day. Mike McElduff (and the Peggy's Spirit team), Sandra Jordan (and her husband) and Barbara Jo Kirshbaum are such angels-on-earth that it's hard not to feel inspired.

There's a special kind of person who walks miles and miles, endures cold, wet, blisters and cramps, raises thousands of dollars and inspires others to listen and be educated about this disease that has torn so many families apart. We walk to raise awareness and inspire others to do the same. We walk for the survivors, for those we lost, for their families and for our future. We sacrifice one day, two days, three days, weeks, months, years, so that one day, we hope in our lifetimes, we will find a cure.

I hope this continues to illustrate why we walk and why we will continue to dedicate our lives to the fight.

I had the pleasure of meeting Deb Murphy on a "Walk" and am so excited about this book. They certainly did a magnificent job of putting together interviews with so many people all striving for one common goal, to eradicate breast cancer. In the meantime, these very very dedicated people are doing a large part. I am fortunate also to be related to one of the women mentioned in the book, who never stops surprising me with her strength and dedication to this cause. It is just so emotional to read about these individuals. Knowing, all too well, there also are so many others out there walking and walking. The stories are never ending and you meet such remarkable people as shown in this beautiful book. Thank you so much for creating this inspirational work of art.

I fell in love with this book the moment I opened a random page to glance through it in a store. To be honest, I did not care much for the title, it sounded tacky to me then, but having read a few pages the smirk on my face faded away. Personally I myself am steel strong, but the images in the book brought to life memories and experiences of my mother, aunts and friends, who simply give, give, give. This book calls women for a pause to reflect and redefine lessons taught to us for centuries. The best aspect is its readability - one story, one example, one lesson at a time. I don't keep any bookmarks in it, but whenever I open it, I stumble upon what I just needed to hear that day - magical! Great book to gift.

My favorite book of Sue Thoele's is the very first one I bought- "The Woman's Book of Confidence". It was just what my slightly sagging ego needed, and it continues to provide much food for thought. Each time I come to a particularly good pearl of wisdom, I put in a book mark for easy future reference. This happened often. Pretty soon the thicker bookmarks were replaced with thinnner ones, but even then that book is fighting the battle of the bulge!

This book will nourish you and help you grow!

I have followed her advice and am now symptom free and I wish I could have had this book before my surgery. It is easy to read and the education is well worth the price of the book. I find this book very helpful
and I have read it several times. She has another book called Natural Womean,Natural Menopause and this book goes into greater detail and is also easy to read.

I read the book "A Woman's Guide to Natural Hormones" and was so excited to finally pull together so many health problems that I've been experiencing! High cholesterol, osteopenia, insomnia, lack of sex drive and sensation, depression and on and on. I had been going to my general pracitioner and gynecologist and neither could explain or cure my problems. They just added more and more medicines, each with its own set of side effects and multiplying my frustration and discomfort!

Reading this book was such a breath of fresh air that I ordered two for family members and tell everyone else I know to read it. After switching to natural hormones, I'm almost back to my old self -- I sleep well, have energy, am losing weight and have more interest in sex. AND - after adding some testosterone to the mix, I DON'T have facial hair and acne (like my GP said I would)!

Bravo! I applaud this author's message to women everywhere. It's time for us to learn to say "no" and take the time to fill ourselves back up again without feeling guilty. So many times I have asked a fellow mother or career woman, "How are you?" and the typical response is, "I'm so tired...I have 100 things to do..." And you know the rest of the laundry list they spout. For once I would love to hear one of them say, "You know what? I feel great! I just took a nap, or I read a novel I've been meaning to finish, or I'm going home to soak in the tub." Perhaps if more women would receive Jennifer Louden's books as gift they would begin to see how they can make this time for themselves no matter what kind of life they are living. Thank you Jennifer for spreading the word. I'm going out for a walk now for no other reason except to see how many more trees have changed their color this weekend.

Even more importantly, each chapter stands on its own, and you can skip around, looking for specific answers, or read the whole way through, while still gleaning the essence of the book. I am reading the book all the way thru, in order, yet have already been able to do a retreat that was useful even though I haven't gotten to the end. This aids the process of retreating, since it takes the pressure off the retreatant, and doesn't create added pressure that would dissuade one to retreat in the first place. An undaunting, very informative book.

Take this book when you get away...

I cherish my time alone. As a homeschooling mother, it's hard to come by much solitude, but when I do, I want it to be time well spent. This book is an excellent guide to making the most of any amount of time: an hour, a day, a week, or more. From preparation, to packing ideas, to plans for your time, this book is full of useful, inspirational, and exciting ideas for the woman (or man!) who craves a retreat from the busyness of life. I plan to refer to it as often as I get away from home.

Lively and personal, The Women's Retreat Book is challenging, inspirational and above all full of practical ideas for retreating with and to ourselves. The book is definitely not a glib self-help manual on "how to retreat and heal your life in five easy steps." Louden's concept of retreat is different from th historical one of separating oneself from life, going off with a guru to pursue some artistic or spiritual quest. Instead her book focuses on short, inexpensive withdrawls from daily life. What makes a mini-retreat--many she suggests are less than half a day--restorative she says is not where or for how long but rather the quality of the time out/time away. Louden's book is full of encouragement, humor, reality, perspective. The book is full of creative suggestions, nitty gritty lists("Good Supplies to Have on Hand"), many personal examples from her life as well as those of many other women. A delightful and valuable back-of-the-book bonus is a series of resource guides to recent films, books, audio, video and music tapes that could be used in retreat. Although I eventually read all of the book, I don't think it is meant to be read straight through as a text. Rather it is a framework, a transition into the reader's being in retreat. I made many annotations and personal references in the margins and the book which I go to over and over now becomes a kind of collaboration. I would think that Jennifer Louden would feel the book had achieved its purpose. I've made it mine and it becomes part of my retreats.

We are a manic 24/7 society and Louden is a goddess for telling us to relax. Relax, relax, relax! If you need a retreat, here is a way to begin brining it into your life in baby steps.

Perfect for Practicing With On the Full Moon--and Rest of the Month!

My daughter and I both love The Woman's Yoga Book! Since today is the full moon, and women's cycles are influenced by the phases of the moon, I feel inspired to write a review of this lovely book.

Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher Bobby Clennell brings decades of yoga study and teaching experience to The Woman's Yoga Book. As other reviewers have noted, her writing style is clear, friendly, deep and nurturing. This book reflects her personal practice and many trips to India to study directly with the Iyengars. She is a core faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York and teaches yoga workshops and retreats throughout the United States and abroad.

The beginning of the book presents an overview of the history of menstrual beliefs and practices, examining how modern concepts developed and how ancient traditions from pro-feminine cultures can help us regain a healthy perspective of our body rhythms.

Clennell points out that because today's woman starts her period earlier and has fewer babies (or none at all) she can have between 350 and 400 menstrual periods throughout her lifetime, as opposed to the 100 periods that most women experienced two hundred years ago.

I was delighted with Clennell's emphasis on honoring the menstrual cycle. In an era where women are encouraged to medicate themselves and suppress the cycle, a book like this is sorely needed.

Clennell rightly emphasizes that we are living in a culture that encourages women to ignore the very thing that makes us different from men: cyclical hormonal rhythms. For all our advances in social equality, attitudes toward menstruation are only slightly more enlightened than in the past. The media encourages us to suppress symptoms with drugs, keep up outer appearances and get over it as quickly as possible.

Yoga teachers need to be aware that the young women students in their classes may already be taking one of the new experimental pills that promises a "lifestyle revolution" by eliminating periods and putting an end to premenstrual syndrome.

Bobby Clennell gives sequences for each phase of the menstrual cycle, from the premenstrual phase (supported bridge pose stabilizes mood swings), menstruation (restorative poses allow the body to rest), and the post-menstrual phase (inversions allow the body to cleanse and recover). By ovulation, when a woman is at her peak, her yoga practice has built back up to its full strength and variety. In addition, The Woman's Yoga Book offers solutions for a variety of menstrual and premenstrual problems, including amenorrhea (failure to menstruate), menorrahgia (excessively heavy periods) and dysmenorrhea (painful periods).

A former professional animator, Bobby Clennell has used her skill in creating over 735 illustrations. Two photographers took hundreds of photographs of the author on which she based the illustrations. The illustrations show variations of poses and, when necessary, how to come in and out of each pose. Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend.

This book is useful to a wide range of practitioners. Women new to yoga can practice with this book, and teachers will have a vast storehouse of information at their fingertips. I urge any teacher offering workshops on yoga and the menstrual cycle to recommend this book to their students.

This is a book for any women's health practitioner who is curious about how yoga works. It is a book that could lead doctors and other health professionals to refer more women to yoga classes.

The publishers, Linda Cogozzo and Donald Moyer are themselves longtime Iyengar Yoga practitioners and the clarity of writing I have found in all their books is unsurpassed!

I find this book very easy to follow, written in language I understand from taking classes in Iyenga yoga. The illustrations are clear and accurate. Each pose includes information on its benefits, and also information on when to avoid the pose. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their understanding of yoga poses and wishes to start or expand their yoga practice at home.

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle is a book that every woman will want to own. With detailed illustrations, excellent guidelines and practices for any type of reproductive issue, author Bobby Clennell has written THE book that works directly with your cycle. Clennell is a senior Iyengar instructor who has studied directly with the Iyengars, most notably, Geeta Iyengar, who writes the forward to this book. Iyengar has written her own book for women, Yoga - A Gem For Women, and although that is a very useful book, I have found Clennell's book to be more user friendly.

There is an intro with discussion on how menstruation has been viewed over the years by each culture as well as the physical dynamics. The illustrations are really nice - there are variations of poses and in some cases, she shows how to come in and out of each pose. Every picture is clear and easy to understand. Instructions are concise - Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend. Any possible discomfort that you may have during your cycle is covered along with a suggested routine. There are practices for mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue, migraines and more. And best of all, these routines do work!

Sadly, there is not a lot of information on perimenopause or menopause - but I guess since this is a book about menstruation, I shouldn't expect it. Perhaps Clennell could address these issues in a future book? After using The Woman's Yoga Book with great success, one can only hope!

This has become my 'go to' yoga book. After using this book for only a month, I was cramp free for the first time in years. The illustrations are so detailed, it is easier to use than practicing with a DVD. Can't recommend it enough!

I LOVED this book! It shows how important making goals can be - it can absolutely change your life. I do this in small ways; I write 5 goals and do whatever it takes to achieve them and cross them off my list (and start again!). This book is full of encouragement, success stories, action plans, tips on journaling, overcoming obstacles - and simply a FABULOUS way to connect with woman and build lifelong friendships. Thank you for writing this book!

This book came into my life at the perfect time. I was going through life, just getting through life, without a real plan. One day I woke up and realized, its happening. I'm in my mid thirties and life is just whizzing by without much meaning. I realized that if I didn't make a change I would wake up in another 30 years and have missed it.

This book was a gift from a friend and I am telling you it was the best gift I have ever received. It allowed me to work together with other women like me, my friends and come up with a life plan. It was so easy to use and had step by step ways to live my life on purpose.

Since reading this book I went back and graduated from college, started a successful business that I can run from my home and still be a Mother that I can be proud of. One of the best things the book taught me was to say what I mean in a direct, yet kind manner. For women to find their voice is one of the most amazing gifts you can give.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Sincerely,
Happily 37

I have been in a women's group which followed the format included in this book for over one year! The format and activities included in "Women Connected" are easy to apply and very powerful. This guide made all of the difference to our group of 7 women - and helped us to be a group of women with intention and purpose vs just a group of ladies that got together for "social conversation". What's more, the information is beautifully written and presented! I would highly suggest this book for any woman who would like to start a "Women Connected" group of her own!

Women Connected is a book which ultimately delivers confidence to women to enrich their lives, and the lives of those around them. The book is beautifully organized, and filled with proven techniques from the authors extensive coaching and group leadership experience. I love the specific tips on how to invite guests, the right words to use to open and close a session, and time tables to manage each part of the discussion. There are agendas, worksheets and handouts for the taking, which make it incredibly easy to get started. Pam's insights and caring spirit shine through, and in sharing her knowledge, thousands of new Group Leaders can now host meaningful and effective women's groups.
