Delightfully presented, practical informationReview Date: 1998-04-27
The two women responsible for the book - the author and the illustrator - have "been there, done that". Both are survivors of serious illness and have - along with their families - faced the questions that surround such illness, including the decision to use (or reject) life support and to move ahead with life despite some limitations following illness. They provide lots of practical, insightful information that can be useful to anyone - male or female - facing serious illness and/or surgery, but do so without losing sight of the inherent joy of life which, like the flowers that they use to illustrate emotions, seems to occasionally wilt as we face crisis situations.
The book is more than delightful; it is a charming, useful, practical guide to anyone undergoing a life crisis.
It seems strange to say that I enjoyed it - but I definitely did and plan on ordering additional copies to pass along to friends when they face similar situations. I highly recommend it!

A real winner An eye openerReview Date: 2004-04-10
This part on page 5 is what grabbed my attention and was a light bulb moment. The only clarification I would make is where she writes 'Spirituality is a faith in God, Nature, a higher consciousness, or any other power greater than our singular mortal existence'. I would have noted any positive God, higher consciousness or power per se, since I think like has yin yang, sun moon, good bad equals or opposites.
I like how the author seeks to educate western women or American women on how and why women in other areas of the world do not have the obesity or eating disorder issues American women have. Like on page 7 'Traditional Western diets fail to resolve the food body conflict because they don't deal with the root cause'.
Page 13 'Growing up in Western society, we're programmed to believe that every problem has a quick and easy solution. Have a headache? Take an aspirin. Coughing? Take a cough suppressant. Feel over weight? Go on a diet. Problem solved.' Of course Americans want it 'now' They want throw away diapers, fast food, and a remote control that changes the channel before you even know what is on.
Beginning on page 101 she shares some easy to do yoga exercises that I have found really do help energize me as well as relax me. More relaxed and energized I am the less interested in between meal eating. I also like her section on page 154 on the importance on becoming still and thankful BEFORE one eats. Some call it saying grace, I call it simply giving thanks and reflecting on the hands that created and brought the food to my plate. I also like how the author reminds the reader that one eating schedule doesn't fit all. I have learned that five small meals per day are best for me, whereas a friend of mine finds two larger healthy meals with two snacks mid morning and mid afternoon work best. And as the author notes on page 158 'a balanced meal is one that fosters good health'.
And finally a reminder in Chapter Ten that 'You are a work in progress' so don't beat yourself up but when you fall, get back up, and keep going.
this is a good book...Review Date: 2002-02-25
From a person who has battled body and food issues for some time, the authors present a new way of viewing my feelings and struggles. Take note that there are many exersizes (which they refer to as "practices") that are time consuming. In addition, to get the most out of this book, you have to be at a place where you are really ready to look at your food/body issues. It is not a diet book, it does not advocate weight loss. The goal, as I see it, is peace.
I personally have yet to follow all the exersizes but believe that when I am ready to truely confront my food/body deamons and take the time for the practices, this will be just what I need. (had i already done more of the exersizes I may have given the book 5 stars).

An Amazing, Candid and Emotional AccountReview Date: 2006-02-01
It was recommended to me by a friend even though breast cancer is not something that has affected me directly. Nevertheless, once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I was overwhelmed by Mark Weiss's candid, emotional and illuminating account of his and his family's experiences dealing with breast cancer. Although presented in the context of breast cancer, it provides valuable lessons for dealing with any type of adversity in life -- be it a personal health issue or otherwise. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone.

Get Out and Walk!Review Date: 2005-10-07
For our families and friends who have trouble wrapping their minds around it, this serves as a powerful teaching aid to make them realize 'why we walk' if they haven't grasped it already.
I had the pleasure of meeting several of the featured walkers during the weekend of October 1st & 2nd 2005 as I participated in my second Avon 2-Day. Mike McElduff (and the Peggy's Spirit team), Sandra Jordan (and her husband) and Barbara Jo Kirshbaum are such angels-on-earth that it's hard not to feel inspired.
There's a special kind of person who walks miles and miles, endures cold, wet, blisters and cramps, raises thousands of dollars and inspires others to listen and be educated about this disease that has torn so many families apart. We walk to raise awareness and inspire others to do the same. We walk for the survivors, for those we lost, for their families and for our future. We sacrifice one day, two days, three days, weeks, months, years, so that one day, we hope in our lifetimes, we will find a cure.
I hope this continues to illustrate why we walk and why we will continue to dedicate our lives to the fight.

A book every woman should readReview Date: 2004-10-10
Reading this book was such a breath of fresh air that I ordered two for family members and tell everyone else I know to read it. After switching to natural hormones, I'm almost back to my old self -- I sleep well, have energy, am losing weight and have more interest in sex. AND - after adding some testosterone to the mix, I DON'T have facial hair and acne (like my GP said I would)!

Perfect for Practicing With On the Full Moon--and Rest of the Month!Review Date: 2008-06-19
Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher Bobby Clennell brings decades of yoga study and teaching experience to The Woman's Yoga Book. As other reviewers have noted, her writing style is clear, friendly, deep and nurturing. This book reflects her personal practice and many trips to India to study directly with the Iyengars. She is a core faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York and teaches yoga workshops and retreats throughout the United States and abroad.
The beginning of the book presents an overview of the history of menstrual beliefs and practices, examining how modern concepts developed and how ancient traditions from pro-feminine cultures can help us regain a healthy perspective of our body rhythms.
Clennell points out that because today's woman starts her period earlier and has fewer babies (or none at all) she can have between 350 and 400 menstrual periods throughout her lifetime, as opposed to the 100 periods that most women experienced two hundred years ago.
I was delighted with Clennell's emphasis on honoring the menstrual cycle. In an era where women are encouraged to medicate themselves and suppress the cycle, a book like this is sorely needed.
Clennell rightly emphasizes that we are living in a culture that encourages women to ignore the very thing that makes us different from men: cyclical hormonal rhythms. For all our advances in social equality, attitudes toward menstruation are only slightly more enlightened than in the past. The media encourages us to suppress symptoms with drugs, keep up outer appearances and get over it as quickly as possible.
Yoga teachers need to be aware that the young women students in their classes may already be taking one of the new experimental pills that promises a "lifestyle revolution" by eliminating periods and putting an end to premenstrual syndrome.
Bobby Clennell gives sequences for each phase of the menstrual cycle, from the premenstrual phase (supported bridge pose stabilizes mood swings), menstruation (restorative poses allow the body to rest), and the post-menstrual phase (inversions allow the body to cleanse and recover). By ovulation, when a woman is at her peak, her yoga practice has built back up to its full strength and variety. In addition, The Woman's Yoga Book offers solutions for a variety of menstrual and premenstrual problems, including amenorrhea (failure to menstruate), menorrahgia (excessively heavy periods) and dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
A former professional animator, Bobby Clennell has used her skill in creating over 735 illustrations. Two photographers took hundreds of photographs of the author on which she based the illustrations. The illustrations show variations of poses and, when necessary, how to come in and out of each pose. Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend.
This book is useful to a wide range of practitioners. Women new to yoga can practice with this book, and teachers will have a vast storehouse of information at their fingertips. I urge any teacher offering workshops on yoga and the menstrual cycle to recommend this book to their students.
This is a book for any women's health practitioner who is curious about how yoga works. It is a book that could lead doctors and other health professionals to refer more women to yoga classes.
The publishers, Linda Cogozzo and Donald Moyer are themselves longtime Iyengar Yoga practitioners and the clarity of writing I have found in all their books is unsurpassed!
--Suza Francina is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and author of Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause, and other books for people at midlife and older.

Relief for your cycleReview Date: 2007-04-27
There is an intro with discussion on how menstruation has been viewed over the years by each culture as well as the physical dynamics. The illustrations are really nice - there are variations of poses and in some cases, she shows how to come in and out of each pose. Every picture is clear and easy to understand. Instructions are concise - Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend. Any possible discomfort that you may have during your cycle is covered along with a suggested routine. There are practices for mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue, migraines and more. And best of all, these routines do work!
Sadly, there is not a lot of information on perimenopause or menopause - but I guess since this is a book about menstruation, I shouldn't expect it. Perhaps Clennell could address these issues in a future book? After using The Woman's Yoga Book with great success, one can only hope!

The answer to my "thirty something" life crisis.Review Date: 2007-11-27
This book was a gift from a friend and I am telling you it was the best gift I have ever received. It allowed me to work together with other women like me, my friends and come up with a life plan. It was so easy to use and had step by step ways to live my life on purpose.
Since reading this book I went back and graduated from college, started a successful business that I can run from my home and still be a Mother that I can be proud of. One of the best things the book taught me was to say what I mean in a direct, yet kind manner. For women to find their voice is one of the most amazing gifts you can give.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book.
Sincerely,
