A valuable addition to the clinician's library

This book uses detailed case material to illustrate the various concerns experienced by patients who are dealing with infertility. It provides clear descriptions of the specific interventions that address many of these patient concerns. Deveraux and Hammerman have presented material in such a way that therapists are able to select appropriate specific interventions so that therapy can be individualized to address the concerns of a particular patient or couple. Infertility and Identity also describes effective interventions for patients who may still be struggling with the issue of infertility years after a successful pregnancy or adoption. This book is especially relevant at a time when financial constraints often necessitate therapy to be focused and time-limited. This book will be an excellent resource for clinicians who are helping patients deal with the many issues related to infertility.

An excellent resource on infertility.

This is a much-needed resource for a major problem area for many couples. Deveraux and Hammerman have written an informed and useful book about a seldom-addressed problem. Of particular interest are their challenges to traditional thinking. As a psychologist often working with clients with infertility problems I found their concepts challenging and useful, full of practical information. Although directed to the professional this book is quite readable and down-to-earth, and will be as valuable resource for individuals and couples struggling with this problem. Highly recommended. Burns and Covington's book has been very helpful in my practice. "Seasoned" clinicians as well as practitioners with less experience working with infertile clients will find the information presented valuable.

When managed care makes it impossible to refer a client to someone who specializes in infertility, here is the book that will make you feel confident about your work. And when you don't have time to read a whole book at once, here is the book that allows you to choose the chapters you need when you need them. The impressive array of interdisciplinary experts follow the same format in each chapter, making cross-references for the reader very easy. This book is truly comprehensive, including topics such as "Special Populations" and "Adoption after Infertility", along with the practical guidelines we all want but which are often lost amidst theory and statistics in other books. The appendices and resource section are especially impressive. There are questionnaires, guidelines, consent forms, and a record-keeping form. The resources section has over 20 pages ofdouble-column entries. The authors have organized a stunning amount of information in a way that is useful to clinicians new to infertility issues and to those with experience who want to learn more

This book is a valuable reference for RNs, LVNs and nursing students. I first became aquainted with Ingall's and Salerno's "Maternal And Child Health Nursing" as an LVN student. I am now an RN in a busy perinatal unit and still refer to it often. It contains virtually all the information needed to come to a basic understanding of this complex topic in an easy to comprehend format.

A must-have for student midwives

Behind me on my shelf, I have three copies of this textbook. The first copy is from 1966. It is a look back in time that is enough to make any childbirth professional giggle. The second book I have is from 1978. Again, this outdated book is a serious look at midwifery, with photos that are outlandish. I keep these books because I find the evolution of the books phenomenal... and yet, the content has not changed much over time. Childbirth is still physiologically the same as it was in 1966.

The third book I own is eight years old. While it is not the most recent edition of the book, it was the edition printed before the current edition. This book has been what the previous editions have not been for me: a serious textbook about midwifery. Realistically, there are hundreds of midwifery textbooks out there, all of them good. But the Myle's textbook stands out above the others for a number of reasons. For one reason, it is simply well written. For another reason, it is been kept current with the changing times. And for a third reason, it tends to be the accepted textbook in midwifery study groups everywhere. The information in this book is solid and helpful. As a book to read as an aspiring midwife, this is definitely an intermediate level book, although the first few chapters begin gently. It is a book I would pack with me if I travelled.

An excellent handbook for any midwife or perinatal nurse.

I was only just wishing this week that I had my old Maggie Myles textbook with me. I left mine behind when I left Zambia where the book was used as an excellent tool for those of us practicing as midwives and educating young Zambian nurses in the same skill. The book helped me many times in difficult situations to make critical decisions regarding the mothers and babies in our care. I never dreamed I would get a chance to write a review. I doubt it is to the standard you require. No matter. I know the book was up to the standard of any nurse midwife working in challenging circumstances.

Women's struggles: beyond the right to abortion
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-18
For a single-volume, in-depth history of women's struggles for reproductive freedom through out American history, college-level and many a public library holding will want to look at PREGNANCY AND POWER: A SHORT HISTORY OF REPRODUCTIVE POLITICS IN AMERICA. Historian Rickie Solinger argues that women's struggles go beyond the right for abortion: reproductive politics surfaced when slaveholders devised breeding schemes, the US government took Indian kids from families, and when doctors encouraged Latina women to be sterilized in the 1970s: thus PREGNANCY AND POWER embraces far more than the usual perspective.

An important, well written book

Pregnancy and Power is an eye-opening exploration of reproductive politics and should be read by anyone who cares about the social injustices women are subjected to in this regard.

A wonderful new conception myth

Karen Propp, a poet, teacher, and, with the help of infertility treatment, the mother of a young son, set out to write *The Pregnancy Project: Encounteers With Reproductive Technology*, in part to create "a new conception myth," but she's done much more: written a memoir that manages to be simultaneously intimate and discreet, a generous description of her own difficult, and ultimately successful quest to have a child via the miracles and dehumanizing horrors of infertility treatment. Her clarity, honesty, capacity to combine feeling and analysis, as well as her thorough explanations of the technology (these not for the faint of heart) are a gift to people struggling with infertility, and to those who love and care for them. Propp writes, "In years to come, when we tell our children the story of how they got here, the petri dish and the ultrasound will be coequal with the birds and the bees." This beautifully written book will be one of the important sources of that new story.

I found this book very fine and very moving. While in infertility treatment, I chose my reading material carefully. I wanted nothing that would discourage me or make me depressed. The Pregnancy Project helped me get through treatment with its positive spin. I compare it to The Empty Lap and A Little Pregnant. Thank you, Karen.

What To Read While Waiting For Deliveries

This is a neat concise text which covers almost any problem that you're likely to run into while on an Obstetrical service. The text is clearly divided into problems which facilitate "a fast look-up". Each subject is discussed with critial issues covered, such as statistics, decision trees, and the presence or absence of outcome based protocols. While there are limitations regarding the accuracy of the recommendations, given the publication date, this remains a helpful tool for learning basic obstetrical practice.

a women's history masterpiece

This historical work is truly skillful because it focuses on female leaders in reproductive rights and health other than Margaret Sanger. Before reading this book, I was unaware of the many other figures in reproductive health's history, but Rosen uncovers these figures and illustrates why their lives and actions were so important to this historical topic. A must read for women's studies' classes and any person who is interested in this aspect of women's (and society's) history.

This book is the real deal. If you are interested in breeding or just curious this is the book to own. I have bred boas and pythons and I refer to this as often as possible. Even if you are not interested in breeding and just want to bone up on your knowledge this is a must have book in your library. Every self respecting herper should own this book!! It is "THE WHAT IT IS" book.

A must have for those interested in Boids!

This is a book that you simply must have if you are at all interested in the keeping and or breeding of Boa and Python snakes. This is one of the most complete works on the subject available to date. It is an easy reading book that even though there are some technical discussions, even an amature hobbyist will be able to follow along. Advanced hobbyists will also learn things from this book that they had not learned before, and it will make them think in a way that they had not thought before. This is a book that you will find yourself reffering back to for years to come. Not to mention you'll see incredible photos that you will not see anywhere else. This one goes on my top shelf for sure!
