A great book for understanding modern genetic engineering
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-08
This book is a must for anyone interested in understanding the amazing advances that have been made in biology in the past half century. The author simplifies complex modern scientific methods so that non-scientists can understand them. This book would be a wonderful gift for an advanced biology high school student, college student, or college graduates who just want to understand current biological principles. There are many examples of ethical issues surrounding modern molecular genetics that make the book a must read for anyone interested in bioethics. I found this book fascinating reading and very educational.

excellent and important read

This is a great book. Therapists are good people (I'm one of them), but we tend to be really pollyanna about sexual diversity. The DSM-IV-TR has some serious shortcomings, and this book is a wonderful, accessible analysis that launches mental health into the realm that it should have always embraced. Highly recommended.

A GUIDE TO READ
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-17
"Sexual Medicine in Primary Care",by William L. Maurice is the kind of book that once read, will never be forgotten... The author gives a guideline that takes you to the world of Sexology...The way that the author writes the Sexual History-taking,Interviewing and Assesment gives general aspects that are important to conduct the first step on Sextherapy. Sexual Dysfunctions are shown as a comprehensive matter...I would like to give a special attention to the part of the book where the author writes an important aspect of Medications and Sexual Function...It reminds me Helen Kaplan...

Great addition to library for pediatricians
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-25
Many pediatricians and pediatrics residents own Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Malformation. However, this text is not as widely used and discussed. It's a great addition to "...Patterns of Malformation". Mechanical deformation patterns often overlap with malformation sequences, and the text is careful to separate the two and focus on deformations secondary to fetal constraint, fetal position and presentation.

Many issues pertinent to general and subspecialty pediatric practice are covered. On a newborn nursery rotation, I used the book repeatedly when encountering various deformations in newborns including: calcaneovalgus, metatarsus adductus, talipes equinovarus, DDH, polydactyly (pre-axial and post-axial). The pictures are color and of high quality. Each deformity is defined. Epidemiology, work-up, management and treatment strategies are discussed.

A great addition to your library if you work in a pediatric field.

Great for expatriates or espatriate wanna-be's!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-28
After I retired early in the U.S.A. (see "Cashing In on the American Dream", Paul Terhorst), I spent time in various inexpensive third world countries looking to settle down, maybe even find a nice wife and form a family. This I did in Chile, but I wish I had had the benefit of reading Ms. Dean's book first! Things have worked out OK, but there have been pitfalls that, along the way, could have been avoided via the perceptive insights contained in this book! Herein, one gains insight as to why, in some countries, women are over-anxious to have kids, and yet while in others, they are under-anxious... also detailed are various idiosyncracies of foreign culture/governance (corruption?) that affect efforts of international pro-health organizations... a must read!

Freedom of choice for every woman!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-17
This groundbreaking book documents the courageous activism of feminists of color fighting for reproductive freedom. Faced with the oftentimes blatant racism and classism of the mainstream women's movement and obstacles of sexism amongst many of the men within their racial communities, these women are bravely demanding access to abortions and an end to sterilization abuse. With the anti-choice opposition trying to control female sexuality and reduce women's bodies to baby-making factories, this book is more important than ever. Not to mention that race and class are still pressing issues in this country, as evidenced by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and recent attempts to further criminalize undocumented immigrants . However, though the book details the thoughts and actions of African-American, Latina, Asian-American, and Native American feminists, I was disappointed that it neglected to mention the work being done by Arab-Americans. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book, and unfortunately an urgent one.
