best so far (40 years) in many waysReview Date: 2008-05-26
I definitely disagree with a few reviewers who said that it doesn't have any solutions. It has one of the best sequences of recommended activities that I've seen. The problem is when it comes right down to it is that a person is going to have to choose not to eat sometimes when he/she really, really wants to! No one can make you do that, unless firearms are involved, and that would be a temporary fix anyway. The book does a good job of helping someone realize that it is really more painful to continue emotional eating than it is to stop it, no matter how hard it seems at the time. A person must also choose to do something else besides eat. That is the bottom line. I've known both of those truths for a long time, yet somehow this book helped me actually implement the behavior.
Another plus is that he does not recommend any certain diet. It's up to each person to determine what foods will allow her/him to eat amounts that provide the peace we are looking for. (Beck says research shows few people maintain weight loss without some kind of systematic plan, but regimented systems are contraindicated for healing emotional eating. To each her path.) He also doesn't recommend substituting some low-cal food to replace the junk we want to eat when we aren't hungry. Drinking a lot of water, trying to fill up on celery, all those tactics, in my opinion, just make things worse later. Bite the bullet and face not eating at all until you are hungry for real food! Eating is not going to solve the problem!
In my years of trying to diet (I actually stayed on them only a few times, but I learned a lot about what healthier foods taste delicious to me and let me eat amounts I want often enough), I have changed what I eat for meals so much that I can't imagine putting a bag of chips in with my lunch, but you could do it, if that's what pleases you most. My downfall wasn't meals; it was a bag of chocolate kisses at a time, or 3/4 of a carton of ice cream, or a package of cookie dough-many of you know the drill. And it wasn't necessarily mindless, I KNEW I was eating the whole package. When I was in the middle of it, I couldn't imagine what it was going to take for me not to do it. But it has happened, for now, at least.
I've not binged for nearly two weeks (okay, I know that is a short time, but I've been working up to it, not just jumping in for the honeymoon), and I've been more active. I'm more comfortable in lots of clothes, and there is even a pair of fallback cords that are very close to going to the thrift store pile. I used to adore Geneen Roth, the queen of emotional eating writers, and definitely credit her with my having a much gentler attitude toward my body and habits, plus with eating, even overeating, everything without guilt, which I think also helped lay the foundation, but Gould brought it together. Finally, without his even mentioning anything religious, his approach dovetails quite well with a spiritual practice i've been implementing in other areas of my life. I'm very grateful I found the book.
I will say that i do recommend trying to find a support group in your effort, either live or online. I haven't done his online program, so I can't speak for that, but I joined (for free) Sparkpeople.com and got on a message board team called Living Binge Free that has also helped me have a place to kick around ideas and share success, as well as be lovingly made accountable. There is also a team there devoted just to Shrink Yourself which I and another person are trying to build.
Good luck in your quest. If you had given up for awhile, I think this will be your best bet to return to the issue. maybe your last.

The Best Thing That Ever Happened to ME!Review Date: 2008-04-18
It helps me kickstart my healthy eating.
It helps me break my food addiction.
It helps me with all my ridiculous cravings.
It helps me with all my aches and pains due to unrevealed food allergies.
It's the easiest diet I've been on (after the first 2 days). It gives you choice, freedom to eat as much spinach and as many cucumbers as you want... freedom to stop after 3 weeks... freedom to choose.
This is such an American diet.
3 weeks on... as much time as you want off and then when you feel overwhelmed by how much you're eating due to stress, boredom, addiction, whatever your thing is, you go on it again for 3 weeks...
3 weeks of self-control and boosting your self-confidence b/c you get results.
This diet fits me and my lifestyle perfectly... I'm now clinically the correct weight for my height. I hope you find success with it.
From my friends and I with food issues... THANK YOU.
PS: I cheat a bit and do free weights every other day instead of aerobic every day... but I also lead a hectic lifestyle and make an effort to be even more active. Not medical advice... just MY thing... but they say if you're muscles are sore you're burning calories.
I've tried them all and this is the best by farReview Date: 2008-02-20
I have found a few foods that have really, really helped so I want to share them. For breakfast I have one package of Quaker cinnamon roll oatmeal with 1/2 cup of applesauce stirred into it after it's cooked. I usually use those pre-portioned applesauces (50 calories) so it's really easy. Also, the thing that I just found this week is snack-sized cottage cheese. It's 90 calories and it keeps me from being hungry better than anything else for 90 calories. They are perfect. I buy yogurt (100 calories-key lime is the best), slim fast shakes (180 calories-cappucino flavor is delicious!!), 30 calorie fake cheese and 40 calorie bread (I toast the bread in the toaster, put cheese between 2 pieces and microwave the sandwich for *5* seconds to form a 110 calorie grilled cheese which is not that bad); wheat thins and tuna; and I fry eggs in no-cal butter spray and put them on 40 calorie toast with a little ketchup, salt and lot of pepper and it is very satisfying for 200-300 calories. I eat a 15 calorie popsicle when I want to eats something sweet. When I am starving and feeling like I might go off the diet, I eat as many dill pickles as my little heart desires with the caveat that I vow not to weigh myself the next day. Dill pickles are my go-to desperation food that I haul out when I can't do it otherwise. You will retain water, but you will have kept on your diet and that is the most important thing. Just don't weigh yourself the next day or your might lose motivation.
I eat the grand majority of my calories during the day before working out so I can actually focus at work. Then, I go home at night and eat at least a cup of sugar-free jello with a few tablespoons of lite cool whip on it. Then, I go to bed. Throughout the day I am prepared at all times with low calorie foods to eat. I don't find myself tempted to go get something because I have all my food with me all the time. I carry food in the trunk of my car, my refrigerator is never out of anything and I have food in my desk at work.
I've cut out caffeine for the most part except my 1 big cup of coffee in the morning. It's best not to drink soda, but if I do, I drink caffeine free diet soda. I've recently read that caffeine increases cortisol stress hormones in the body, which makes it hard to lose weight. Who knows if it's true, but I'm decreasing my caffeine anyway.
When you are hungry, go to bed. Get as much rest as possible. Between all the added rest you are getting (which also decreases your stress and cortisol levels) and the time that you are using exercising (I exercise medium intensity for at least an hour 5 days a week), then you only have less than 14 hours in a day to eat anything. Do as many non-food related activities as possible.
I hope this review is helpful. These are all the dieting tips I've got.
Works for meReview Date: 2007-10-23
The thing to know about this diet is that you will be hungry on the low calorie rotations - but it will work, if you follow it closely (and are careful and reasonable with your substitutions). The good part is you only have to follow it so closely and strictly for three weeks - then work on maintaining until you try again.
Yeah, this is an old diet, but it is the only one that has worked for me...I believe in it. If you can do it - and you can if you buckle down for 21 days and put your mind to it - this will work!

A wonderful WW cookbook for avid gourmet chefs!Review Date: 2007-02-17
You can WOW your family and/or guests with these recipes from start to finish and nobody would ever guess that they're WW and you won't feel as though you're falling off the bandwagon if you're following the program.
A couple of caveats: this book is not intended for people who don't enjoy cooking and/or have little experience in the kitchen. These are a bit more in-depth and require more prep and cooking time. The second thing to watch out for is the # of Points per recipe. Some of the values are as high as 13 Points per serving. In short, if you have a low Point allocation per day, be careful about the recipes you choose to make and/or your portion size.
Outside of that, this is a fabulous book for avid and curious chefs who wish to experiment with concoctions created by WW and the CIA. You will feel like a gourmet, accomplished chef without the guilt of preparing and eating unhealthy and fattening foods. Enjoy..

Enjoy the process of exercise and eat right. Nothing complicated here, just good sound advice and reminding.Review Date: 2007-08-21
I bought the book because I wanted to learn what Stu did to maintain such physical fitness and endurance in his 50s. The book covers his exercise and nutritional philosophy quite well, although the information is not revolutionary. Mr. Mittleman has an incredible record as an endurance athlete and in this book he teaches us his simple to follow approach for a healthy, energy-filled life. Stu Mittleman is an incredible role model and an extraordinary athlete. Enjoy!
Every runner should read this!Review Date: 2008-02-23
ExcellentReview Date: 2007-11-09
I have been running for 26 years - competetive and recreational - but never experienced the joy of running this way.
Good, but...Review Date: 2008-05-01
First, let me say, I write as a casual runner who keeps getting more into the sport (that's why I read the book). I am looking for the nuts-and-bolts of a program & diet, but not necessarily a bunch of anectdotal stories and/or paragraphs & paragraphs of material that could be said in one, maybe two, paragraphs, which is much of this book. Second, I love his basic running methodology, his heart rate material, & training advice, which, if this was a 20 page booklet with just that would receive 5 stars.
So, here is my basic take on the book:
The book is divided into three sections - thinking, training, & eating.
The THINKING section I could do without - believe you can achieve, set goals, and work for it ('baby steps'). If you are a runner, then you probably have some motivation and goals, so this probably won't change you too much or provide anything different than what you have heard or read before.
The TRAINING section, I believe, is the best part, but, again, there is a lot of extraneous material and he spends 4 or 5 pages for what should be said in 1 page. The big error in this section, however, is that there are no in-depth training programs for particular distances. So, if you are looking to train for a marathon, then this section will not provide you with specifics. Yes, there are broad guidelines, which will help any runner, but not the specifics. Yet, he recommends his website "for more information about more specific 5K, 10K, and marathon training charts", but I found none at his site. Maybe you have to pay for them? But that is part of the reason I bought the book. Overall, however, his Most Efficient Pace, Mostly Aerobic Pace, and Speedy Anerobic Pace material is helpful.
The DIETING part has some interesting tid-bits (I want to get my acidity tested), but, as a person generally interested in fitness, I didn't find a lot of new material here - eat a lot of veggies and fish, avoid processed foods and sugars. The supplement section is very, very interesting and useful.
In short, I think the book is very worthy of a library checkout, but is not necessary to add to your personal library. You will lose weight, burn fat, and be in much better shape if you follow Mittleman's program, so that is worth 5 stars, but the book itself, which should be a booklet, is not.
I hope that helps you in your purchase decision process.

DO IT!Review Date: 2008-04-14
I found this program because I was dealing with feelings of extreme mental and physical stagnation. I wanted to give myself a chance to pause and reconnect with my body. I opted to do the full three weeks; which went by much faster than expected. I kept a journal through the the whole experience which was a wonderful way to keep track of my progress. At the end I felt more grounded, much happier, and very proud of my ability to persevere.
Right now I am one week into my three week cleanse and I feel excellent. Spring is taking hold outdoors and I feel the same sense of newness and rejuvenation occurring within myself. It is important to not think of this process as a punishment. It is a great reward.
Don't listen to the skeptics. If you are considering doing this detox I recommend it wholeheartedly. Instead of spending money on material possessions or dinners out at restaurants; invest it in your health. Tailor the program to your needs and what feels best for you. And most importantly, take some time to really listen to yourself. You will feel empowered and happy that you did.
Good and very useful bookReview Date: 2007-09-19
I am glad I spent the money and time on this book. It really opened up my eyes to a lot of things I never really thought about. I am now more conscious of what I do with my body. I have been recommending this book to all my friends around. Most of us really don't understand what we need to do to be healthy, or we think we are doing the right things while we aren't. This book really helps you to become as healthy as you can be. Are there more thorough detoxifications available? Probably, but few of us have the luxury of following them. The only other book that I can recommend with Detox Box is "Can We Live 150" with many cleansing recipes for the entire body. Check also Cure the Incurable

Great ideas to help with weight loss progressReview Date: 2008-02-08
Marginally helpful but in an annoying format.Review Date: 2004-06-04
The book is a series of "diet" tips. I found the format annoying and not easy to refer back to something I'd read. Unless you are just about to start your very first diet, you won't likely come away with much new information. Granted, I've been around the diet block a number of times and have read quite a lot of diet/nutrition-related books over the years, so it wasn't like I expected that anything in this little book of tips would be earth-shattering news to me. Still, I didn't come away feeling like I'd gained much from reading the book.
Though stress eating is not a major problem for me, I know a lot of people who struggle with it. I did feel that her chapter on stress eating was quite good and helpful.
If you are just starting a diet or launching a healthy eating for life journey, you may find the book helpful in that you may be able to focus on just those tips that will give you the most "bang for your buck."
However if, like me, you've been around the diet block a few times, I would recommend "Thin for Life" by Anne Fletcher.
Diet SimpleReview Date: 2002-11-08
In the introduction Ms. Tallmadge briefly touches on the behavioral patterns and problems related to eating of three generations of her own family. Fortunately this is up frount in the book because her discussion of her own struggle with over eating, and her cycle of gaining and loosing weight pulled me in and was something I could relate to, the classic "yo yo" pattern as she puts it.
Some of the information in this book is stuff that I have read somewhere maybe in a woman's magazine, drink more water, exercise, eat less, etc. However after doing a Google search under the authors name I found that she had written many of these articals. Ms Tallamdge approch has talked me down from the ledge of these carb addict diet books and has me eating oatmeal for breakfast! I have never had more energy for my morning work outs than I do with this suggestion. I was on a protein regime that I though was helping me but I was stuck. These Diet Simple suggestions are balanced and not harsh. In the two months since I picked up the book I have lost 15 lbs.
The author's experiance as a practicing nutritionist shows in the many suggestions, mental tricks, substitions, habits and inspirations she anecdotally atributes to from work she has done with her clients over the years. My suggestion is that you skip the nutritionist, come to a place where you are ready to change, use this book as a tool and spend the money you save on new clothes.
I should mention that the recipes in the back are tasty and easy for a bachelor with few culinary skills to prepair. It shows us how to make the food we eat health yet exciting. With all this said I have to admit that I bought the book because I saw the jacket photo of the author before I read the title. She is very cute. Sadly there are no pictures inside the book.

Some good tips, some bizarre tipsReview Date: 2004-01-26
Many of the tips are useful, e.g. eating a salad before lunch and dinner and keeping a food journal. But the tips aren't novel, and the lack of organization and ensuing repetition is annoying.
