I've received more help from the first half of this book, than I have in 25 years of dieting. For the first time in my life, I looked in the mirror and saw some positives and I'm 100 pounds overweight! In one month I've lost 10 pounds and I'm finally dealing with the issues that have been plaguing my life. This is a doable lifestyle change that will enable me to be free from excess weight and the mental games that keep me overweight.

best so far (40 years) in many ways

First, I thought it was very interesting that when I searched for this just know, Amazon suggested to pair it with The Beck Diet Solution, which I discovered last summer and am using as well. Dealing with emotional eating is where I thought Beck fell short. This book fills that gap and so much more. I did a two-weekend training course on stopping emotional eating 27 years ago, but there was no follow-up, and it involved a lot of gimmicky things like 'selling" your right to overeat, and affirmations that would somehow magically make you act differently. Thousand of affirmations later-no such luck.

I definitely disagree with a few reviewers who said that it doesn't have any solutions. It has one of the best sequences of recommended activities that I've seen. The problem is when it comes right down to it is that a person is going to have to choose not to eat sometimes when he/she really, really wants to! No one can make you do that, unless firearms are involved, and that would be a temporary fix anyway. The book does a good job of helping someone realize that it is really more painful to continue emotional eating than it is to stop it, no matter how hard it seems at the time. A person must also choose to do something else besides eat. That is the bottom line. I've known both of those truths for a long time, yet somehow this book helped me actually implement the behavior.

Another plus is that he does not recommend any certain diet. It's up to each person to determine what foods will allow her/him to eat amounts that provide the peace we are looking for. (Beck says research shows few people maintain weight loss without some kind of systematic plan, but regimented systems are contraindicated for healing emotional eating. To each her path.) He also doesn't recommend substituting some low-cal food to replace the junk we want to eat when we aren't hungry. Drinking a lot of water, trying to fill up on celery, all those tactics, in my opinion, just make things worse later. Bite the bullet and face not eating at all until you are hungry for real food! Eating is not going to solve the problem!

In my years of trying to diet (I actually stayed on them only a few times, but I learned a lot about what healthier foods taste delicious to me and let me eat amounts I want often enough), I have changed what I eat for meals so much that I can't imagine putting a bag of chips in with my lunch, but you could do it, if that's what pleases you most. My downfall wasn't meals; it was a bag of chocolate kisses at a time, or 3/4 of a carton of ice cream, or a package of cookie dough-many of you know the drill. And it wasn't necessarily mindless, I KNEW I was eating the whole package. When I was in the middle of it, I couldn't imagine what it was going to take for me not to do it. But it has happened, for now, at least.

I've not binged for nearly two weeks (okay, I know that is a short time, but I've been working up to it, not just jumping in for the honeymoon), and I've been more active. I'm more comfortable in lots of clothes, and there is even a pair of fallback cords that are very close to going to the thrift store pile. I used to adore Geneen Roth, the queen of emotional eating writers, and definitely credit her with my having a much gentler attitude toward my body and habits, plus with eating, even overeating, everything without guilt, which I think also helped lay the foundation, but Gould brought it together. Finally, without his even mentioning anything religious, his approach dovetails quite well with a spiritual practice i've been implementing in other areas of my life. I'm very grateful I found the book.

I will say that i do recommend trying to find a support group in your effort, either live or online. I haven't done his online program, so I can't speak for that, but I joined (for free) Sparkpeople.com and got on a message board team called Living Binge Free that has also helped me have a place to kick around ideas and share success, as well as be lovingly made accountable. There is also a team there devoted just to Shrink Yourself which I and another person are trying to build.

Good luck in your quest. If you had given up for awhile, I think this will be your best bet to return to the issue. maybe your last.

The Best Diet Solution EVER

I felt compelled to spend my precious time to write this review because this is surely the very best diet solution ever! I say this because I have bought all the diet books and done all the diet programs, but there was always something basic and integral MISSING. What was missing is exactly what SHRINK YOURSELF explores thoroughly, and that is the question/s: What is making me eat? & Why can't I control my food? & How can I come to grips with those two dilemmas? I decided to order this book from Amazon after I read my library edition; I just had to have my own copy to reference and re-read forever. Go for it.

This book is awesome. It gives one the opportunity to look at the heart of the issues. Instead of trying to solve the problem from the outside in, it provides the individual the opportunity to explore the issues and problems from the inside out. This book really works. If you really want to shrink yourself, give yourself the opportunity to explore whether you fit the profile of an emotional eater. If you decide that you do, then the concepts and methods described in this book will help you achieve your goal.

This book is helps you get a better understanding of the problems so many of us face for so long and start addressing the issues causing you to binge eat. This book is more than just getting control of your eating habit, but helps you address so many other issues you're dealing with in your life that are all affected by thinking yourself unworthy-most of which I never would have guessed were related. It addresses relationships, with yourself and lovedones, job stress, and many other stresses we face everyday with real-life examples to relate to. If you're struggling with binge eating, the resulting guilt that only leads to more eating, and you're ready to do more than just eat your life away, I would reccommend this book to get back the control over your own body and mind. Believe me, you're more powerful than you think!

I found this book enabled me to recognize some of the main reasons which caused me to fail on previous diets. It was easy to digest, and the daily readings and tasks were easy to follow and kept me focused. The one day at a time approach is making dieting less onerous.

I just started this book three days ago but I am already excited about it. My book had a handwritten note from the author and I also received an email wishing me luck and offering support. Just the personal correspondence is great! I am on day 2 and, at the end of the 100 days, will be back to give a full review.

P.S. I have a blog wherein I chronicle my weight loss struggles as well as my daily life.

Highly recommended, appreciate her approach

I thought this was a very good book, with quick, easy, practical lessons. I found it motivating and insightful. Not every lesson resonated with me and I found some of the examples to be irritating and irrelevant, but I'm only one part of her audience and I'm sure those lessons and examples spoke to someone else. As far as the lessons go, you can do as much or as little as you want with them. Some days, I wrote a lot. Some days I wrote just a few sentences. If I missed a day, I just picked it up the next day. If you can't commit to that, I'm not sure if you're ready to commit to long-term weight loss or maintenance. The most important lessons, I think, are around managing long term weight loss. It really is a rest of your life challenge!

This book was essential to my change in eating habits and immediate fat loss. I had been in weight training for 8 months without much loss of fat. My personal trainer recommended this book. Reading it has made a big difference. For me, understanding the process of fat loss was the tipping point of changing my eating and meal preferences. This is the only book I have found that both clearly explains the process for a non-scientist reader plus incorporates exactly how the process works with weight training.

This is one of the best books you will find on fat loss. Its detailed enough to teach, yet written to be easily understood. This isnt a miracle diet. It describes how to eat healthy and lose fat - not muscle. It really works. I used the fat loss techniques from this book to diet for a bodybuilding building contest. I got down to 5.5% bodyfat without stripping muscle. Its not just for bodybuilders, but if you are one and you have trouble with the diet part of competing - you really need this book!

I would highly recommend this book. I have been experimenting with my diet the past 5 years and reading numerous books. This book is right in line with what has worked for me and also with other books I have read. This book should be one of several books to read if you are serious about fitness.

Okay, if you can look past the grammar.

I agree with many of the other reviews. The grammar and spelling are appalling. This book was definitely never reviewed by an editor (at least not a professional one.) Even though the content was somewhat useful, it's hard to be sure that it's all accurate when it appears to have been written by someone who failed highschool English. Some of the information on supplements are outdated. For instance, it fails to mention that Ma Huang has been banned.

My wife and I used this diet years ago and lost weight. We needed to loose a few pounds again (Holiday gains) so, after trying several other diets that didn't seem to work, we decided to do this diet again. It works! I lost eleven pounds in two weeks and my wife has lost weight also. The book is easy to follow with menus for each meal, every day. I found the meals to be very healthy and most are very tasty. If you follow the plan it will work but I suggest using some Hoodia to curb the appetite.

I love this diet! No! I adore this diet!

It helps me kickstart my healthy eating.

It helps me break my food addiction.

It helps me with all my ridiculous cravings.

It helps me with all my aches and pains due to unrevealed food allergies.

It's the easiest diet I've been on (after the first 2 days). It gives you choice, freedom to eat as much spinach and as many cucumbers as you want... freedom to stop after 3 weeks... freedom to choose.
This is such an American diet.

3 weeks on... as much time as you want off and then when you feel overwhelmed by how much you're eating due to stress, boredom, addiction, whatever your thing is, you go on it again for 3 weeks...

3 weeks of self-control and boosting your self-confidence b/c you get results.

This diet fits me and my lifestyle perfectly... I'm now clinically the correct weight for my height. I hope you find success with it.
From my friends and I with food issues... THANK YOU.

PS: I cheat a bit and do free weights every other day instead of aerobic every day... but I also lead a hectic lifestyle and make an effort to be even more active. Not medical advice... just MY thing... but they say if you're muscles are sore you're burning calories.

I've tried them all and this is the best by far

I've been on many diets over the last 18 years and none of them compares to this diet on any level. I have been successful on this diet whenever I do it. I am a size 12 5'4" woman who has trouble losing weight and I just lost 15 pounds in one round (including 2 weeks maintenance)on this diet. That is diet amazing. You have to have the right mindset going into it and you have to stick with it even when it seems impossible, but you will achieve results. I don't follow the food plans of the diet at all.. I just do the calories.

I have found a few foods that have really, really helped so I want to share them. For breakfast I have one package of Quaker cinnamon roll oatmeal with 1/2 cup of applesauce stirred into it after it's cooked. I usually use those pre-portioned applesauces (50 calories) so it's really easy. Also, the thing that I just found this week is snack-sized cottage cheese. It's 90 calories and it keeps me from being hungry better than anything else for 90 calories. They are perfect. I buy yogurt (100 calories-key lime is the best), slim fast shakes (180 calories-cappucino flavor is delicious!!), 30 calorie fake cheese and 40 calorie bread (I toast the bread in the toaster, put cheese between 2 pieces and microwave the sandwich for *5* seconds to form a 110 calorie grilled cheese which is not that bad); wheat thins and tuna; and I fry eggs in no-cal butter spray and put them on 40 calorie toast with a little ketchup, salt and lot of pepper and it is very satisfying for 200-300 calories. I eat a 15 calorie popsicle when I want to eats something sweet. When I am starving and feeling like I might go off the diet, I eat as many dill pickles as my little heart desires with the caveat that I vow not to weigh myself the next day. Dill pickles are my go-to desperation food that I haul out when I can't do it otherwise. You will retain water, but you will have kept on your diet and that is the most important thing. Just don't weigh yourself the next day or your might lose motivation.

I eat the grand majority of my calories during the day before working out so I can actually focus at work. Then, I go home at night and eat at least a cup of sugar-free jello with a few tablespoons of lite cool whip on it. Then, I go to bed. Throughout the day I am prepared at all times with low calorie foods to eat. I don't find myself tempted to go get something because I have all my food with me all the time. I carry food in the trunk of my car, my refrigerator is never out of anything and I have food in my desk at work.

I've cut out caffeine for the most part except my 1 big cup of coffee in the morning. It's best not to drink soda, but if I do, I drink caffeine free diet soda. I've recently read that caffeine increases cortisol stress hormones in the body, which makes it hard to lose weight. Who knows if it's true, but I'm decreasing my caffeine anyway.

When you are hungry, go to bed. Get as much rest as possible. Between all the added rest you are getting (which also decreases your stress and cortisol levels) and the time that you are using exercising (I exercise medium intensity for at least an hour 5 days a week), then you only have less than 14 hours in a day to eat anything. Do as many non-food related activities as possible.

I hope this review is helpful. These are all the dieting tips I've got.

Works for me

I used this diet to lose about 30 pounds eight years ago and it worked. I kept that weight off, through using the information I learned in the book, for about six years - until I went back to school, became broke, stressed, and busy, and my good eating habits went out the window. Now, finished with school for the second time, I am back on it and so far so good. As has been explained, you follow "rotations" of calorie limits per day (3 days on 600, 4 on 900, then 7 on 1200, then back to another 3 on 600, 4 on 900). There is a menu for every day - something I like because I can just follow it and helps me to be less tempted to cheat - and I can look ahead and see what I am going to eat later on.

The thing to know about this diet is that you will be hungry on the low calorie rotations - but it will work, if you follow it closely (and are careful and reasonable with your substitutions). The good part is you only have to follow it so closely and strictly for three weeks - then work on maintaining until you try again.

Yeah, this is an old diet, but it is the only one that has worked for me...I believe in it. If you can do it - and you can if you buckle down for 21 days and put your mind to it - this will work!

I must say I am really happy I bought this cookbook. It is really great. I love cooking and I am always happy to learn something new. I like to make my own sauces, salad dressings, even pastry. And this book is really about that. It simply guides you step-by-step trough the recipe, every recipe contains nutrition facts which help you to understand what you eat. Authors used plenty of fresh fruit, vegetable and herbs and most of the ingredients are commonly used in your kitchen so you don't have to do shopping for each recipe separately, which saves you money and time. This is another reason why I love this cookbook. It's a really great cooking for every day.

PS: And good thing is, the book even inspired my husband to look into our kitchen cupboard and he made a great dinner.

A wonderful WW cookbook for avid gourmet chefs!

This is one of my favourite WW cookbooks. I love the concept of WW collaborating with the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to produce a collection of gourmet recipes that are WW friendly and healthy.

You can WOW your family and/or guests with these recipes from start to finish and nobody would ever guess that they're WW and you won't feel as though you're falling off the bandwagon if you're following the program.

A couple of caveats: this book is not intended for people who don't enjoy cooking and/or have little experience in the kitchen. These are a bit more in-depth and require more prep and cooking time. The second thing to watch out for is the # of Points per recipe. Some of the values are as high as 13 Points per serving. In short, if you have a low Point allocation per day, be careful about the recipes you choose to make and/or your portion size.

Outside of that, this is a fabulous book for avid and curious chefs who wish to experiment with concoctions created by WW and the CIA. You will feel like a gourmet, accomplished chef without the guilt of preparing and eating unhealthy and fattening foods. Enjoy..

The book offers good advice on exercising, particularly on running, and nutrition. Stu places a lot emphasis on endurance training rather than speed; he also creates a model of exercise that revolves around the enjoyment of the process as the only way to develop the long-term habits of exercise.

I bought the book because I wanted to learn what Stu did to maintain such physical fitness and endurance in his 50s. The book covers his exercise and nutritional philosophy quite well, although the information is not revolutionary. Mr. Mittleman has an incredible record as an endurance athlete and in this book he teaches us his simple to follow approach for a healthy, energy-filled life. Stu Mittleman is an incredible role model and an extraordinary athlete. Enjoy!

It is easy to read and brings you to the point that you can make decisions about how you want to exercise, how often and what to eat.

Like all exercise books, this one is difficult to review, because everyone comes looking for different information, different motivations, & how much information they want.

First, let me say, I write as a casual runner who keeps getting more into the sport (that's why I read the book). I am looking for the nuts-and-bolts of a program & diet, but not necessarily a bunch of anectdotal stories and/or paragraphs & paragraphs of material that could be said in one, maybe two, paragraphs, which is much of this book. Second, I love his basic running methodology, his heart rate material, & training advice, which, if this was a 20 page booklet with just that would receive 5 stars.

So, here is my basic take on the book:

The book is divided into three sections - thinking, training, & eating.

The THINKING section I could do without - believe you can achieve, set goals, and work for it ('baby steps'). If you are a runner, then you probably have some motivation and goals, so this probably won't change you too much or provide anything different than what you have heard or read before.

The TRAINING section, I believe, is the best part, but, again, there is a lot of extraneous material and he spends 4 or 5 pages for what should be said in 1 page. The big error in this section, however, is that there are no in-depth training programs for particular distances. So, if you are looking to train for a marathon, then this section will not provide you with specifics. Yes, there are broad guidelines, which will help any runner, but not the specifics. Yet, he recommends his website "for more information about more specific 5K, 10K, and marathon training charts", but I found none at his site. Maybe you have to pay for them? But that is part of the reason I bought the book. Overall, however, his Most Efficient Pace, Mostly Aerobic Pace, and Speedy Anerobic Pace material is helpful.

The DIETING part has some interesting tid-bits (I want to get my acidity tested), but, as a person generally interested in fitness, I didn't find a lot of new material here - eat a lot of veggies and fish, avoid processed foods and sugars. The supplement section is very, very interesting and useful.

In short, I think the book is very worthy of a library checkout, but is not necessary to add to your personal library. You will lose weight, burn fat, and be in much better shape if you follow Mittleman's program, so that is worth 5 stars, but the book itself, which should be a booklet, is not.

I hope that helps you in your purchase decision process.

I purchased this book after I had made the decision to have WLS. The beginning was a little slow for me only because I had already made my decision to have the surgery, but after that, the rest was very interesting and informative about what to expect before, during, and after surgery. I especially liked the little things that were discussed, which is what we, as new patients, want. The Doctors, nurses, and dietitians do a great job preparing you, but the little things are what set you at ease. This book does that.

I am in the pre-surgery phase. I found this book to be one of the best out there and very informative. It's a must read for anyone considering weightloss surgery. This gives information from someone who actually had the surgery and what they went through before and after.

Well Put Together But Too Expensive And Time Consuming

I purchased this after reading other reviews here. Love how this is all put together but have not started using it yet so only gave it 4 stars and will update my review after trying this out soon. Follow up..This is a very very expensive way to do a healthy detox and unreasonable I think...such a pretty box and well put together but just too much work and too expensive to purchase everything...sorry but there are so many other ways to do this that will not cost a fortune and with the same results so I am lowering this to 2 stars.

I loved the Detox Box! I am on my third week, and I have lost 7 pounds so far. I feel great, my skin feels wonderful, and I have energy to last me throughout the day. As a chocolate junkie, my biggest fear was that I would give into a craving, but surprisingly I did not crave any chocolate or carbs. The food in the program is designed to keep you full and often times, I was too full to eat everything. Many of the supplements don't taste great, but once you understand how it works with your body, it makes it all worth it. The shakes are delicious and the menu can be very varied if you try to make it so. Be prepared to dedicate time to make the broth and really follow through with everything on the cards, it is worth it. I have a full time job, a boyfriend, and a toddler, and I was able to do it. It is quite an investment, even after you buy the supplements, weekly trips to Wild Oats don't come cheap, but it really pays off.

DO IT!

I first did this program three years ago at the beginning of spring. I have recently begun the process again. Although somewhat costly, the expense is completely justifiable in relation to the results.

I found this program because I was dealing with feelings of extreme mental and physical stagnation. I wanted to give myself a chance to pause and reconnect with my body. I opted to do the full three weeks; which went by much faster than expected. I kept a journal through the the whole experience which was a wonderful way to keep track of my progress. At the end I felt more grounded, much happier, and very proud of my ability to persevere.

Right now I am one week into my three week cleanse and I feel excellent. Spring is taking hold outdoors and I feel the same sense of newness and rejuvenation occurring within myself. It is important to not think of this process as a punishment. It is a great reward.

Don't listen to the skeptics. If you are considering doing this detox I recommend it wholeheartedly. Instead of spending money on material possessions or dinners out at restaurants; invest it in your health. Tailor the program to your needs and what feels best for you. And most importantly, take some time to really listen to yourself. You will feel empowered and happy that you did.

I am glad I spent the money and time on this book. It really opened up my eyes to a lot of things I never really thought about. I am now more conscious of what I do with my body. I have been recommending this book to all my friends around. Most of us really don't understand what we need to do to be healthy, or we think we are doing the right things while we aren't. This book really helps you to become as healthy as you can be. Are there more thorough detoxifications available? Probably, but few of us have the luxury of following them. The only other book that I can recommend with Detox Box is "Can We Live 150" with many cleansing recipes for the entire body. Check also Cure the Incurable

Great ideas to help with weight loss progress

From the first page of the book, there are great ideas on ways to lose weight and permanantly keep it off. This is not a diet but rather a change of life. This is something everyone can do without excuses. You just choose which tricks fit with your lifestyle and your on your way to permanent weight loss. I recommend this book to all who are looking to lose weight, whether it be 5 pounds or 100 pounds.

Marginally helpful but in an annoying format.

When I came to amazon this spring to buy a cookbook by one of my favorite Food Network hosts, amazon pitched Diet Simple in one of its "If you buy this, you can get this for only this much." promotions. Being authored by a nutritionist, I figured it was worth a shot for a few bucks more. Um, not really.

The book is a series of "diet" tips. I found the format annoying and not easy to refer back to something I'd read. Unless you are just about to start your very first diet, you won't likely come away with much new information. Granted, I've been around the diet block a number of times and have read quite a lot of diet/nutrition-related books over the years, so it wasn't like I expected that anything in this little book of tips would be earth-shattering news to me. Still, I didn't come away feeling like I'd gained much from reading the book.

Though stress eating is not a major problem for me, I know a lot of people who struggle with it. I did feel that her chapter on stress eating was quite good and helpful.

If you are just starting a diet or launching a healthy eating for life journey, you may find the book helpful in that you may be able to focus on just those tips that will give you the most "bang for your buck."

However if, like me, you've been around the diet block a few times, I would recommend "Thin for Life" by Anne Fletcher.

Katherine Tallmadge's book, Diet Simple,to me is slightly reminiscent of the "Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonomous. Not that it recommends a 12 step program for people who overeat or who have spent a lifetime battling weight and eating disorders, rather it offers those of us who strugle with these issues some experiance, strength and hope.
In the introduction Ms. Tallmadge briefly touches on the behavioral patterns and problems related to eating of three generations of her own family. Fortunately this is up frount in the book because her discussion of her own struggle with over eating, and her cycle of gaining and loosing weight pulled me in and was something I could relate to, the classic "yo yo" pattern as she puts it.
Some of the information in this book is stuff that I have read somewhere maybe in a woman's magazine, drink more water, exercise, eat less, etc. However after doing a Google search under the authors name I found that she had written many of these articals. Ms Tallamdge approch has talked me down from the ledge of these carb addict diet books and has me eating oatmeal for breakfast! I have never had more energy for my morning work outs than I do with this suggestion. I was on a protein regime that I though was helping me but I was stuck. These Diet Simple suggestions are balanced and not harsh. In the two months since I picked up the book I have lost 15 lbs.
The author's experiance as a practicing nutritionist shows in the many suggestions, mental tricks, substitions, habits and inspirations she anecdotally atributes to from work she has done with her clients over the years. My suggestion is that you skip the nutritionist, come to a place where you are ready to change, use this book as a tool and spend the money you save on new clothes.
I should mention that the recipes in the back are tasty and easy for a bachelor with few culinary skills to prepair. It shows us how to make the food we eat health yet exciting. With all this said I have to admit that I bought the book because I saw the jacket photo of the author before I read the title. She is very cute. Sadly there are no pictures inside the book.

This book coaches you how to make little changes, one by one, that can lead you to your weight loss goals. It's like having a friend cheer you on as you take more and more control of your eating habits. I appreciate the sensible advice and good natured guidance from the author. I don't need a "diet" I need a new way of being, and thanks to this book, I am constructing it.

Some good tips, some bizarre tips

This book could've been about 50 pages long (and greatly improved) if it were better organzied and eliminated redundant tips. I would've liked this book much better if the author hadn't put the number of pounds you could theoretically lose after each tip. I really don't see how some of the tips could possibly result in weight loss (finishing a shower with a blast of cold water?). And the batch cooking concept is a disaster waiting to happen for binge eaters.

Many of the tips are useful, e.g. eating a salad before lunch and dinner and keeping a food journal. But the tips aren't novel, and the lack of organization and ensuing repetition is annoying.
