This recipe has all kinds of great recipes. When I started dieting, I was disappointed that I had to give up several of my favorite asian and italian recipes. This great cookbook has several healthy versions of these recipes including general tso's chicken and orange spicy beef.
My only complaint is that the binding for the book isn't good, and pages started falling out almost as soon as I got the book. Maybe I got a defective book, though. Why do they make cookbooks with anything other than spiral binders anyway?

Easy recipes and most use everyday ingredients. Taste so good even my kids like it, especially skinny chimi's and brocolli beef.

I was really excited about this getting this book, but I have to say it is not my favorite. First, after using the book just a few times, the binding has cracked - one of the reasons I prefer the binder style cookbook. Also, one of the most common reasons I get take out is because its quick. None of these recipes are really quick. You can also find many of these recipes in other ww cookbooks. Since I got it for such a great price, its not that big of a deal, but there are definately better weight watchers or healthy cooking cookbooks to choose from.

How Optical Illusions Help You Eat Well

How can air in food make you more satisfied - make you eat less? How can it curb a tendency to be fat, or reverse a trend?
Can it? Turns out - yes.
Feed a hungry college student a half glass full of smoothie and they will eat 20% more at lunch ½ later than the college student who drinks the SAME smoothie only whipped until it swells to a full glass with air. Not only that, but the ones that eat the airy smoothie don't make it up at their next meal.
My brother, John, and my food guru, Dick, have both recommended Mindless Eating and Volumetrics to you and me. I finally read them. Actually, John recommends listening to Mindless Eating as a book on tape, so that's what I did. I recommend it.
Listen to get the fun of it and the flavor of it. Then get the book to read the summaries of what to do.
Both titles don't really work to tell you their messages. The subtitle of Volumetrics is great - Feel Full On Fewer Calories. I'd rewrite that to read - Feel Satisfied on Fewer Calories.
It's not my job to re-title these excellent books. Mindless Eating deals with how our brains are tricked to eat more than we want by other visual cues and often by genuine optical illusions.
You could summarize Volumetrics - We don't eat calories, we eat size, volume. We are stratified by greater volume and not necessarily by greater calories. Satisfied means you eat less, means you lose fat and still feel, well, satisfied.
These are not deprivation diet books. DEPRIVATION DIETS DON'T WORK. And need I say, not fun.
The two cheapest ingredients in food are water and air. Adding air or water is the simplest way to feel more satisfied with no additional calories. You read about air in the smoothie above. Soup is food with water added. Raisins are grapes with water removed.
Let's see what that does for you...
Raisins
Which is more satisfying. ¼ cup of raisins or nearly 2 cups of grapes (50 ml or 500 ml). The metric numbers makes the size difference even more startling. Exact same number of calories. Exact same food. One has water; one doesn't.
Which would you choose if you wanted to feel most satisfied?
Yep, me too.
Soup is the Free Lunch of Satisfaction
I live on good soup, not words. - Molière
Even though soup is mostly water, you and your body perceive it as food. This is very counter intuitive to me.
Proof? Give people a 270 calorie chicken-rice casserole and a glass of water as a first course to a luncheon.
Give another group the same casserole with the water added to it to make it a soup. Check both groups to see how much they ate for the rest of lunch.
The soup people ate 100 calories less of the lunch that followed and didn't make up the loss at dinner. Cool, yes! Soup created more satiety, satisfaction. Other experiments showed that chunky soup creates more satisfaction than strained soup. And hot and cold soups both create the same benefits.
You can read the physiology in the books if you're interested. But this seems like magic to me.
Bag the Peanut Butter
I over eat peanut butter; it is one of the highest density foods you can find. If I eat volume, then you have to eat a mountain of calories to get a decent volume.
If I lived alone, I would just not bring it into the house. Obviously you can use this useful tip for all your trigger foods. Since I live with the Mysterious Madame Ling, who likes peanut butter on apples, I simply put the peanut butter in a brown paper bag.
Not only is this -- Out of sight, out of mind -- it puts inconvenience into the circuit making it harder to mindlessly eat.
Note: You may be and I am on a seafood diet, I eat everything I see. Out of sight, out of mind.
OK, One Optical Illusion
People perceive tall as more than short.
Remember the optical illusion from childhood of the upside down T. They ask which is longer - the horizontal part or the vertical section.
People say the vertical is up to 20% taller when they are in fact the same length. (The illusion is so strong for me, that I got out a ruler and tested it.)
Tall thin glasses will have you drinking less wine, juice, or Coke. And again, you will feel satisfied. Remove the short squat glasses from your life, unless you want to increase your consumption of water, then the idea works in your favor. I drink water out of a Bavarian beer mug.
Action
If you have people in your family who need to monitor fat gain, get the books, read them, and then apply the tricks.
Eat well,
William

The quality of the books are excellent. I had a problem receiving the books, though. When tracking them I was told they were delivered, but I had never received them. I got connected with customer service through the website and they helped make things right by re-sending my order. These books came in the same time I should have received my other books. I feel confident that I can order through Amazon again and they will make sure that I am satisfied. Thank you, Amazon!

The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan is the best thing to come into my life since sliced bread - no pun intended. Barbara Rolls is a researcher and scientific investigator who isn't trying to sell you overnight success or supplements or super-duper curves or a body to die for. In fact, as far as I've been able to figure she ONLY selling her 2 books, and boy are they worth every penny you'll spend to buy them. The science isn't new, just the presentation. The book is filled with color pictures that actually SHOW the difference between a quarter cup of raisins versus a cup of grapes - a veggie pizza wedge versus a cheese slice.
The premise is simple and the science is sound. Your body doesn't know from fat, carbs, etc. It know from FULL or NOT. Make it think it's full, it'll quit nagging you to eat. It's so simple I can't imagine why we haven't all come to this plan.
Why am I using this book? I'm fat. I've been fat for about 16 years. I'm glucose intolerant, have high blood pressure, and before I found this book I was on the way to full blown diabetes, the very real possibility of a stroke, blown knees, and a life of waiting to die. My doctors have been telling me a simple truth for years. ALL - that means every single one - of your physical ills are directly attributable to being overweight. Sound familiar? For years they've been saying - start with 1800 calories Mary. Lose 20 pounds. Then we'll reevaluate. Just begin, Mary. So - I began - dozens of times. And failed. Dozens of times. I beat myself up mercilessly for my failures. Then, trolling Amazon as I am wont to do, I bumped into Volumetrics. OK, I thought. Can't hurt. Nope. Didn't hurt a bit. This is far and away the best eating plan I've ever met, and I've met a few. As soon as I started charting 1800 calories a day using the principles in the book - I started losing - slowly and steadily. And I felt full - ate stuff I loved - learned to plan for the day - even the week - bought a nice big roomy food carrier to take to the office. It's not in the carrier - it doesn't go in my mouth. For all of you out there who have been praying for the one that clicks - try this. It's a cheap price to pay for what may be the most important book you'll ever buy. It works for me and my hand to God, it'll work for you. Try it. You'll love it.

This is another one of my health bibles that I take everywhere with me for reference. I lost 50 lbs in 6 months by following this book's healthful balanced plan and exercising regularly. That was over 5 years ago, and although I do gain a little bit from time to time, I can always get it back off quickly by refreshing my memory. This is no diet; it is a healthy longterm lifestyle based on budgeting your calories to get the best bang for your bite!

I'm always looking for healthier options for meals and this book is great for that! I've only tried a couple so far but they've been very tasty and relatively easy to prepare, even for me, a total beginner in the kitchen! They did take a little longer than the 15, 20, or 30 minutes, but that could have been because I'm kind of new at preparing meals so I'm probably slower than the average cook. I'm very happy with my purchase and plan to use it alot!

I can tell you from my experience in buying this particular WW book that the recipe's are fantastic and all stay true to the timing of the recipe's! Even the 10 minute meals are GREAT!! My hubby was skeptical about eating the 30 minute meals and he absolutely loves them and NOW HE is making them! He's really the better chef in this house since he retired and he absolutely loves this cook book! You WILL lose weight with this book if you follow the instructions and get the right ingredients-don't worry!! And you'll NOT BE SORRY you got this book-that's for sure. I had a hard time choosing which one to start with and I'm so happy I chose THIS ONE b/c of it having 10, 20 and 30 minute recipe's.
Also don't forget to buy yourself a WW calculator-it's an tool that is very valuable for days when you're on the go and don't have time to cook anything in this book! You can get them on Ebay for $20 if you look around and not have to pay tax OR shipping. I got mine from some place called something like: Treetop Collectables or something close to that. I just know it is GREAT and a HUGE HUGE HELP as this book I got at Amazon. Also, I was shocked to buy this book from Amazon and get it TWO DAYS LATER!!! I didn't pay extra for fast shipping either-got the free shipping and presto-I had the book so fast I was shocked!! Folks, we live out in the boonies and they STILL got me this book so quickly after I ordered it-it was unreal!!
You won't regret buying this book-trust me!! It is GREAT!!!!!!!!

I highly recommend getting the book with the DVD because it really helps to see how the exercises are supposed to be done. I first got the book without the DVD and it was taking me over an hour to do the 45 minute workout. Now I see that it can actually be done in 45 minutes.
I'm only on day 4 of the plan and so far so good - I've already lost 3 pounds. I find that I am spending a lot of time preparing meals but I rarely cook so it may not be bad for someone who cooks most of their meals. The exercise requirement is tough but I'm looking at it as my personal 2 week boot camp.
that's all. good luck.

The book was fine, but I found the diet unrealistic. There were too many things to buy and cook. If I had a personal chef, it would have been great! I found it a total waste of my money.

I have had to begin at the preparation stage of this program because I am not in the best physical shape. I am not over weight, I just have not done any sport activity in some time.
But, upon beginning the preparation stage, after only one week I have noticed a bit of improvement in my strength. I am therefore quite hopeful that upon continuing Mr Kirsch's program I can only improve.
Since I am living where weights are measured in kilos, I have elected to begin with the one kilo weights. I found 1.5 kilo weights to be too heavy. (I am also a musician and did not want to take any chances on damaging my arms or fingers). The weight I selected is working quite well.

If you are really determined, disciplined, focused and motivated you will be able to loose 3 - 5 kgs in 2 weeks. I have been through a lot of diets and this one is by far the most effective and healthy. Although its for 2 weeks I did it for 4 weeks and lost 5kgs. No kidding! And remarkably it stays that way. Of course you can go on eating like a pig after but that's the beauty of this diet, you wouldn't want to. Combining with heart pounding sometimes torture routine and good food plan, its the way to go for ultimate weight lost. You will feel totally changed. You will feel your stamina improve, yoru complexion better and your muscles starting to develop. Most importantly your body mass will drop. Excellent way to loose weight on a long term basis.

I've been on the low carb lifestyle diet for years now (lost about 70 pounds total and kept it off for 8 years now!) and was eager to learn about this low carb program which combined diet and exercise. I've been doing various exercise programs at my town and work gyms but was looking for something I could do at home when I couldn't get to the gym. I'm happy to say that this exercise program is great! I don't follow the exercise or diet program strictly: I do eat egg yolks and don't use whey protein shakes (they're tasty but the whey protein (and dairy) makes my skin break out). Also, I don't exercise as much and as often as recommended in the book, but I am pretty strict about restricting my carbs and exercising using both the DVD and cardio on most days. While my weight hasn't really changed after 3 weeks, I have noticed my measurements have gotten smaller and I am getting more toned even though I "seriously cheated" on my diet several times. This is the first time that I've used a stability ball and a medicine ball and I love working out with them! I'm not able to do the "boy" pushups yet, but am hopeful! I think the DVD exercises are great. The only suggestion would be to have the warm-ups as a separate menu choice. (Right now they're part of the cardio-whole body workout.) He doesn't go too fast or too slow in the DVD - seems just right after getting familiar with the exercises. And I feel WONDERFUL when I'm done - ready to start the day with lots of energy! I'd recommend this diet and exercise program to anyone. I really am a believer in the low carb lifestyle/cardio and strength training exercises! I have lots of energy and I don't drink diet sodas, alcohol, caffeine, tea or juices - only water. I'm not planning on introducing many carbs into my diet over time - maybe some healthy carb vegetables and lower carb fruits so I'm going to stay pretty strict, but may do his later phase cheat meal once a week. One thing I like to cook with is ground chicken (he likes ground turkey) (making a beanless chili with low carb vegetables and canned tomatoes) and I like tofu (which David doesn't like much) and I also came up with using canned pumpkin with cinnamon too, sometimes mixing it with firm tofu. Another treat I've added is that I also sometimes mix cocoa powder with cold water for a chocolate treat. He recommends almonds, which I LOVE, but they're a trigger food for me and are hard to stop eating, so I try to eat them only on rare occasions. Dairy is also a trigger food for me, so I probably won't introduce it either except for an occasional cheat meal. I like the concept of a cheat meal once per week in the later phase; it helps to prevent boredom and should help prevent binging/going off the diet completely. I really like the way he used the ABCDEF term for the initial phase- avoiding alcohol, bread, caffeine, dairy, extra fats and fruit - easy to remember and keep in mind. So while I really, really like his diet plan, I have modified it slightly to fit my lifestyle/body better. This is NOT an easy diet/exercise program, but it is very effective! I'm a LOW CARB and exercise fanatic! In short: I highly recommend this book, his program and the DVD!!! Thank you so much, David!

This was well worth my money! After reading the first chapter I began to make changes. It all makes sense. The best part, after years of dieting and regaining the weight, I am losing weight without any effort. I no longer see food as the enemy. I'm grateful to have been introduced to this book and love the effect it had on me. I will certainly recommend it to others.

I give five stars to this book for a few reasons. First, being a young adult involved in the fashion industry, it is not easy to find answers out there that make sense. Of all the literature I have read on nutrition, dieting, and weight control, I feel this one is well rounded. There are no severe restrictions, no two week diet plans, and no extreme measures with results that do not last. I would feel comfortable recommending this to a younger crowd- teenaged group, or to an older more experienced crowd.
Pressure from outside sources are enough stress- we do not need to add the additional pressure form oursleves. One of the most important facts about this book was that it showed me what is right for myself may not be right for other people, and that is okay. Being true to yourself is one of the best ways to feel better, regardless of judgement and criticism.
After years of struggling with body image and disordered eating, I am starting to feel better. I have been practicing intuitive eating for 4 months now, and through the stress of graduating college, I feel pretty good! I realize that eating, as in what you eat, how you feel (or don't) when you eat, and how you eat, all reflect a deeper look into yourself. In this healing process, I finally realize it is no longer about losing weight. The point is to feel better, happier, and have more esteem for yourself and your body. I can say that I enjoy ice cream to the max now! By removing the deprivation and guilt, we release the need to stuff our faces (and our emotions). Thank you.

If you are a visual learner like I am, "Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss" and Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss 30 Day Plan can really help you to become more aware of the relative caloric density of different foods. I've tried many diets in the past during which weight came off, usually through self-denial, but then came right back after reaching my goal and eating "normally" again. Often, even more pounds piled on afterwards, a sure sign my body wasn't about to risk starvation again. I've followed Dr. Shapiro's books for only a month now and have already lost over 12 pounds without any feeling of sacrifice at all and I haven't even increased my physical activity yet. As he states in the first book, Dr. Shapiro does not want you to think of this as a diet but as "food awareness training." While I don't care for the resulting acronym, I have to say that this visual learning method has worked beautifully for me. I use my newfound knowledge at home as well as in restaurants and have no trouble making choices that are great for me. While no food is "forbidden" on this plan, I now know how to balance my caloric intake for little "indulgences" and am still losing weight. Best of all, I believe I have finally found a way of eating that I can live healthily with for the rest of my life. Thank you, Dr. Shapiro! Would that there were more books this Picture Perfect!!!

I'll be honest with you, when it comes to nutrition, I am illiterate at best and just plain lazy at worst. I have never had to pay much attention to my weight (so I thought). I pretty much ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. When I weighed 140 pounds and the military told me my maximum weight was 189 pounds, I remember telling soeone that if I ever reached my maximum, there would have to be something wrong with me. Well guess what? Something must be wrong with me.
In 2003, I topped the scale at 202 pounds (my ideal weight is 176). I knew I had to do something. I read Dr. Shapiro's book, and on September 25, 2003, I began his program. By November 20, 2003, I weighted a sleek 182 pounds. That is 20 pounds in less than two months. The funny thing is that I was never hungry. In fact, I ate more on Dr Shapiro's plan than I was eating before. My exercise consisted of a daily morning walk, and I cut processed sugar and sodas out of my diet. That was it. With his help, I was simply able to make more healthy choices.
Well, I got lazy (yep, I figured out what my problem was), and I put all of those pounds back on--they actually came back slower than they came off. Four years later, I am back over 200 pounds. I plan to implement his plan once again. This time, I plan to stick with it for life.
The only criticism I have is the same one that some others have mentioned. Dr. Shapiro does advocate a vegetarian diet, so there is no information in there about meats. But, in reading his book, you get the principle, which is most important, Then, it is just a matter of reading labels and making healthy choices.
Unless you have a medical reason for your weight, I truly believe that anyone who is willing to commit to Dr. Shapiro's plan will see the pounds literally melt away. It won't happen overnight, but you will begin to see results in as little as 1-2 weeks.

"Muscle burns fat, so you certainly don't want to lose muscle. This is one reason diets don't work in the long run." ~ Bob Greene
Over ten years ago, Oprah and Bob Greene wrote a book to tell the world how to lose weight in a healthy way. While Oprah still has issues with her weight (most recently because of thyroid problems - how I can relate) she continues to be a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. While many of us can relate to the roller coaster of weight loss and weight gain, this book shows that with a proper diet and serious exercise you can stand on firmer ground.
Oprah's entries from her diary reveal the source of her eating problems before she had to deal with a thyroid problem. She lost weight by following Bob Greene's ten-step formula which is based on increasing metabolism and shedding excess weight through exercise.
I liked all the extra information along with the diet which is based on the food pyramid. You are instructed to eat more fruit and veggies and to eliminate most fats from your diet. I was surprised to read that you should avoid frozen vegetables. They are so convenient. Bob Greene answers some of the following questions:
Why do you initially gain weight when you start a new program?
Why do you reach a plateau?
Why can eating more boost your metabolism?
Why should you avoid alcohol if you are serious about exercising?
If you are ready to make exercise a part of your day then you are ready for this book. Walking alone can help you lose weight. I lost 25 lbs just by walking and eating less. I can highly recommend the Subway veggie sandwich if you are trying to increase veggies, especially fresh and delicious ones.

The "Make the Connection" book is very good. It has continued to help me in my endeavor to lose weight. I am currently down 108 pounds with only 66 pounds to goal. What I like so much about this book is it goes straight to the substance of Bob Greene's philosophy. Try to pick up any health/diet/fitness book and you'll have to wade through an excessive introduction and pages of effusive testimonials just to get to the point.
While you do learn how Bob and Oprah met and how implementing his 10 changed her life, each chapter is devoted to one principle, from Oprah's and Bob's perspective.
This is not a fad. He is very honest about what it takes.
Most impressive was the conclusion: the fundamental reason of why we want fitness; what really is health and happiness. However, it will sound simplistic if you skip to the end. Read the book, I liked it so much I completed it two days.

Since I've started my weight loss program, I decided to get around to reading a book my boss was reading at work... From Chunk To Hunk - Diary Of A Fat Man by Fred Anderson. While I can tell some people will hate this book, I absolutely loved it...
Anderson was a *very* overweight 371 pound guy who found his "pain point" after watching a TV show about a leg amputation. The amputee was in the emergency room with a very gross leg due to diabetes complications, and they ended up removing it. Anderson saw that (he was diabetic also) and could tell that was not far away from his future unless he did something different. He ditched the Little Debbie snack cake he was munching on, and set out on his quest to drop below 200 pounds. Instead of finding some faddish diet or starving himself, he started eating nutritious food in portions that were "normal" for what a person should eat (not what *his* concept of normal was). He also started moving around and becoming more active. Between reduced calories and increased activities, he was able to change his whole mental image of who he was, how he related to food, and in the end dropped all the weight he was looking to lose.
Other than the fact that I loved reading his writing style, I also appreciated the insight of weight loss from a guy's perspective. There are no weight loss success books out there by women who will talk about the very real subject of "man boobs"... what weight loss can do for your love life... along with the hysterical episode of purchasing a girdle after his skin removal surgery... Great stuff!
Some people won't like this book as it's not a cookie cutter "program" that tells you what to eat, when to eat it, and guarantees success. Most American weight loss programs treat symptoms and not the underlying condition and mindset that got you into the situation in the first place. And once you're off the program, the weight comes back. Anderson's approach is perhaps the only true way to have permanent weight loss with no drastic risks... Move more, eat less, and understand your relationship with food...
If you're a guy trying to lose weight, I'd highly recommend this book. Even though you may be following a different plan (like I'm following Jenny Craig), the mental aspects of what happens are still the same...

I enjoyed this book immensely. My only quibble is that it gets a bit repetitive at times. Mr. Anderson does a lot of philosophizing about his approach to weight loss, all of which I agree with, but he tends to say some of the same things several times using different words. I also found the ratio of philosophizing to anecdotal stories a bit higher than I expected, and while I enjoyed reading all his thoughts on body image, exercise, weight reduction, etc, I would have liked to see more stories describing various days in his life while he was on his bodily transformation journey. This is primarily because he can be VERY funny while writing about real-life experiences. The most important thing, however, is that his approach to mental and physical change is down-to-earth, common-sense, and utterly right on. This kind of wisdom is desperately needed in today's culture of fad diets, dangerous pills, and rampant unhealth. Worth reading whether you need to lose weight or not.

This book isn't very good. While the author's large and rapid weight loss, using sensible food choices and exercise, is inspirational, he spends too much of the book simply parroting his favorite self help gurus - verbatim. If you're familiar with the work of Anthony Robbins in particular, you will find this distracting. I tossed the book aside in disgust after the first few chapters but eventually came back to it. There are some honest moments where he seems to actually write in his own voice about the physical and psychological anguish of obesity. But these moments didn't come often enough for me to be able to recommend this book.
A tragically missed opportunity to chronicle an amazing accomplishment ...

This was the first book I ever tossed in the trash. I did so after having attempted four times over the course of a year to make it through this book. It proved impossible. Anderson's book began its life as blog entries, and the material did not transform well at all.
The material is comprised of either the rather boring life minutae one would find in a weblog entry, or, worse, what I must unkindly call 'psychobabble' - material that oft seems poorly rehashed from other motivational sources. The overly frequent motivational material proves quite uninspiring, and, when taken cumulatively, becomes both exasperating and flaccid.
The complete and utter failure of this text is very tragic, since the battle Anderson fought is flabbergasting in its difficulty and his accomplishment in and of itself is amazing and deserves high respect. A more aptly written tale of the journey from extremely morbid obesity to a fit physique could have proved both inspirational and life-changing to a wide audience. But this particular journal of his journey is far too lacking in simple human emotion and far too overladen with recycled stale platitudes to be of any use to the great majority of people seeking to emulate Anderson's journey.

I had high hopes for this book -- I thought it was going to be a good read. Instead, I found it to be ponderously written, ploddingly slow, and deadly dull -- and the sense I got of the author made me pray I never end up stuck next to him on an airplane flight. What a self-centered know-it-all! Sheesh.
There are much better books out there on this subject -- I highly recommend The Obesity Myth by Paul Campos. The one thing Anderson is right about is that you simply need to eat less and move more, and live that way forever, period. That's what works -- but man, this guy really should have sprung for a decent editor who'd stare him down about some of his puffy prose, and not just allowed his wallowing ego free rein to self-publish. Not worth buying.

I am the author of a new book entitled GENOCIDE;HOW YOUR DOCTOR'S DIETARY IGNORANCE WILL KILL YOU. I am a family physician with over ten years experience introducing a low carbohydrate, more fat, more cholesterol, more protein diet into my patient's lives. Through this dietary approach I have cured type 2 diabetics, treated people with high blood pressure with little or no need for meds, seen tons of weight lost and the list goes on and on. Protein Power was the first book I read espousing the virtues of low carb diets.
Unfortunately most physicians will never read this book and if they do they will dismiss it as an opinion, not based in fact. For some reason, the scientific method is not followed in dietary clinical trials. The scientific method should be: I have an idea (theory, supposition, opinion, hypothesis whatever you want to call it), I perform an experiment to either prove or disprove my idea; if I prove my theory-great-look how smart I am. But if the results do not prove my idea, I am supposed to re-evaluate my initial idea, not call the experiment flawed or the results inconclusive.
The reason the dietary clinical trials appear contradictory is because the researchers in these trials start off with a conclusion--not an idea-- perform an experiment, and when the results of the experiment do not support what the researchers already 'think' they know; they now call the experimental design flawed or the results inconclusive, which is generally not the case.
I have literally treated thousands upon thousands of my patients with low carb diets over the last decade. I love when the labs come back with higher HDLs, lower triglycerides and normal blood sugars. I love teasing my patients and ask if they are eating more fat and cholesterol. When they say yes, I ask them "Well, if you are eating more fat and cholesterol, then why did your fat level drop and why did your HDL rise, and why did you lose weight?" I always get a smile back, because my patients know what I am getting at. And what I'm getting at is the fact--and I mean FACT, that low cholesterol, low fat diets DO NOT WORK to any degree to help people stay off or reduce their medications.
This book should be required reading in all medical and undergraduate colleges. If physicians actually understood the correct way to tell their patients to eat--many disease processes would become extinct--instead of the human race. I recommend my patients to purchase this book (along with mine of course :-), to help them understand why they must start low carb diets----NOW. By the way, my apologies to Dr. Michael Eades, I mistakenly called you Dan in my book, even though I must have said your name thousands of times to my patients--but I have recommended your book thousands and thousands of times, so I hope you forgive me for that.
Allow me to end my post with the three biggest dietary myths in America;
MYTH # 1
Eating fat makes us fat. FALSE. The truth is that eating fat does not make us fat, unless we're eating too many carbohydrates along with that fat.
MYTH #2
Eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease. FALSE. There has never been any study which has shown, convincingly, that eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease.
MYTH #3
Probably the biggest dietary myth out there is that the calorie actually means something in human nutrition. FALSE. The calorie means nothing in human nutrition.
Thank you Dr's Eades, for helping save my life and the lives of my patients. It inspired me to write my own account of what I've seen work in my practice over the last decade.

It was very informative and I liked that it was written in both a detailed format and a get to the point format - so I didn't have to read the whole thing to find out what I wanted to know -

I got this book at the same time as Protein Power. I read the older one first. PPL expands on PP, updates some of the research information and calculations.
In this book, the Drs. Eades get more into the Paleolithic diet, broken down into 3 styles for modern life. It does seem a little over the top, yet it makes a lot of sense. I love history and anthropology, and this approach does explain a lot regarding our modern diet giving us major problems in the way of diabetes, heart attacks, acid reflux, and a host of other "modern" diseases.
BTW, did you know the Egyptians ate a lot of grains and also had heart problems? Just a little factoid there from the book.
I am already a low carb lifestyler, but I learned a lot from these two books. The price of the books was worth the information on vitamins and minerals and nutrients, notwithstanding any other information.

If you follow this book, you will lose weight. A family member turned us on to this diet, and my husband and I both lost tons of weight, and we saw quick results. A few other family members have had nothing but good results from this book as well. The best part, is that the book teaches you healthly ways to eat, so after a while you don't even need the book, you just learn what foods are "good foods". I lost 15lbs and my husband lost over 30lbs. Every now and then when we get stuck in a rut and feel like we put on a few pounds, we go right back to the diet and follow the book, and off comes the weight again. We both experience more enegery when following this diet, and have the urge to excercise more. We have been very happy with this over the many other diets we have tried.
Great Diet, but this book could be better

I love this diet. It's easy and I am never hungry. However, this book was too confusing in explaining how to figure out meals on your own. I got this book over year ago and then quit because I didn't understand it enough to succeed without following the meal plans. Then recently I read The zone, and the way it broke foods down into blocks of food and how many grams per block, was an eye opener. Now I am back to this book with it's superior recipes and meal ideas.
I am giving this book 3 stars because I think they make figuring out the forumula too complicated. In the Zone it's easy-peasy. I've also dinged it one star for not having an index. We need an index!!! My book is covered in post-its! That's two dings off. The remaining three stars, however, are well deserved; The recipes and meal plans are very good.

The only diet that works. Yes it takes a bit to get the hang of it in the begining, but the weight melts away. Easily lost 15 pounds in the first 2 weeks with the fat flush menu. After a month, 20 pounds gone and dropped the blood pressure from 160/90 to 120/80 during that time with no excercise. Will no begin that and look to drop the remaining weight to meet goal. Balancing your body by the food we eat makes this a successful diet and one that will change the way you eat for life.

for starters, I don't understand how granulated fructose is commercially available to people. 2nd, I have no idea why the authors of this book actually think it's not unhealthy to add such large amounts of granulated fructose to your meals. do a google search for "dangers of fructose" to see what I mean. everything from exacerbating gout to decreasing nitric oxide levels in the blood to being the most unhealthy form of carbohydrate a diabetic can ingest. don't be fooled into thinking it's ok to use because it "comes from fruit!"
You'll feel great if you follow this program!

I followed this program for several weeks and lost about 18 lbs. It is based on a zone premise, and highlights eating low-glycemic-index foods. It is not so much a high protein diet as it is a healthy diet- lots of fruit, vegetables, lean protein.
The pros:
*I felt great, lost weight and did not feel at all deprived.
*The recipes are very healthful but many of them are very appetizing, as well. Even though I am no longer following the program, I still cook the low-carb lasagne because it tastes great!
*This is kid friendly and the whole family can go on it. It isn't a 'diet'. My kids love the shakes made with berries, fruit and nuts.
The Cons:
*The biggest drawback is that this plan takes a good deal of effort to follow if you want any sort of variety- there are lots of salads and shakes, but all require some preparation and are made from fresh ingredients
* Some things are a little on the fringe- putting protein powder in shakes and cereals makes you feel like you are on a diet, tracking down fructose to use in place of sugar took me a while and cutting out caffeine and artificial sweetners was near impossible... HOWEVER, probably part of why I felt so great!
Give it a try, it certainly won't kill you and you might even feel great. Ben & Jerry will wait for you if you don't like it!

I guess I'm in the minority -- I was super unimpressed. My family picked at both meals, and refused to eat the leftovers.
