With sharp observant wit Lisa Bonnice takes the reader through their own energy patterns; be they doubts, fears, coping mechanisms... what have you, into the knowledge that they are not alone and that they are stronger than the worst they can imagine.

Lisa gives us permission to be real-human-people, warts and all, while we choose how we will shift our shapes and what reality we are moving into. Truly a gifted author, and truly an empowering book!

Shape Shifting--reclaiming YOUR perfect body

Lisa, thank you so much for your fantastic book! I am truly very
grateful to you. I have read 2/3 of it already & it has really got me
thinking about some things which totally resonated with me. I've been
working with the Law of Attraction for some time now but your book has really opened my eyes to how I can make it work for me regarding my health & why I might be holding onto my weight so much. Your personal stories have been the most eye opening for me as I related to several of them, in areas I had never considered before (i.e. the feminist issue). I can't wait to finish the rest & get that healthy body!

For the past five years I have always had the belief that my weight changes are based on my emotions or my energy feild. I have had several experience of rapid weight change depending on what I felt(I attracked what I craved). This book helped me tie together my knowledge of science, auras, "Loves Energy" and why the body goes through changes when your in love. I give this book 4 stars because it helped my theory, but it didn't give me the additional information I needed to put my theory into pratice.

Lisa Bonnice smartly shows how what we think shapes our bodies. She's passionate and practical about guiding people through a mind shift - to first of all accept their bodies lovingly and then envision with confidence their bodies changing into a more comfortable size. She's such a great encourager that it would be hard not to succeed by following her plan toward weight loss and toward a whole new appreciation for your body. As the author of The Secret Wisdom of a Woman's Body, I'm very pleased to recommend this book as a great resource to support women, in particular, in appreciating and making friends with their bodies.

I almost didn't buy this, but something told me to. I'm so glad I did. For the first time in my 59 years, I've found what I feel I've been looking for. I'm very skeptical and picky, but this book felt "right" from the first page on. While very down-to-earth, Lisa's book seemed to connect me to a much higher dimension of myself. And yes, though I bought it to help me lose weight (it did and still does), the most valuable thing I gained is a sense of who I am on an entirely new and fascinating level--I've fallen in love with me! Quite an accomplishment. My "Authentic Self" will celebrate 60 years next July, and I'm thrilled to be me. Lisa, if you read this, I thank you from my heart.

More Than A Dieter's Cheating Guide

In addition to being a wonderful Dieter's Cheating Guide, this exceptionally well written book presents a very practical real world diet. I define a real world diet as one that is:

Easy to follow, practical and safe

Based on correct principles

Results in lost pounds in the near and long term

Compassionate and understanding of human nature

Some facts of life are not pleasant, such as the fact that a gram of fat contains more calories than a gram of protein or carbohydrate. Yet within such constraints Dr. Widroe offers the reader a way to manage her/his eating habits without sacrificing one's favorite foods and without the tedium of counting calories or taking on boring tasks. Further, the book is downright interesting with realistic accounts along the way that help solidify your understanding of his points.

Finally, a diet book that lays out a sustainable plan and gets to the roots of the psychology of, first, overeating, but more importantly, learning to eat properly! The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide provides powerful and specific psychological tools for controlling your food intake. It starts with the premise that all dieters are cheaters, and there's no use fighting it. What Dr. Widroe proposes is a fundamental shift in perception that helped me to burn calories instead of emotional energy. "Effective cheating" might sound like an oxymoron when applied to dieting, but this real-life approach carries the heft while you lose it. I really found it very helpful, and as a food writer, I'm constantly in the way of temptation.

A thoughtful, step-by-step guide to reforming one's eating habits

Review Date: 2007-09-06
Psychiatrist Harvey J. Widroe, M.D. presents The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide: Eat and Watch Pounds Melt Away, a guide to losing weight on a long term basis - rather than short-term dieting, which simply forces the body into starvation mode and prompts it to quickly regain any lost pounds. Chapters address how to use "controlled cheating" that substitutes small, regular filling snacks for out-of-control binging; which foods should be avoided and what to substitute for them; why weight control clubs don't work (they fail to take into account that dieters are inherently and biologically cheaters); why all-protein diets are extremely harmful; and much more. A thoughtful, step-by-step guide to reforming one's eating habits in a manner that not only encourages good nutrition but also takes natural and sudden cravings to "cheat" into account.

This is the "diet" book I've been waiting all my life for--easy to read, informative and above all, practical. Dr. Widroe confronts the myths and dilemmas that face a dieter. He is an author who understands human nature and gives examples on how a dieter can cheat smartly in a variety of social situations. I highly recommend this book.

Diet Cheaters Go to the Head of the Class

Review Date: 2007-04-13
Finally, a diet book that punctures the myth that the countless stream of diet books are full proof methods for weight loss. Psychiatrist Dr. Harvey J. Widroe, after many years of studying diet programs his patients had been following, invariably found that success was fleeting and failure the norm. From that starting point, he conceived a down-to-earth and sensible pathway to dieting.

"The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide: Eat and Watch Pounds Melt Away," by Harvey J. Widroe, M.D., with Ron Kenner, makes the case that people are only human and easily given to temptation. Widroe's innovative approach, with a focus on the mindset of the dieter, allows the dieter to cheat-- but cheat smartly.

This is not a crash program that excludes any one food group. Widroe allows you to have your cake and eat it, too; in lesser portions of course. But his strategy is anything but simplistic. It involves such things as shrewd restaurant ordering, and planning rewards in advance. In one chapter, How to eat Effectively, the reader is given space to write in his or her current cheating list and then devise a new, improved cheating list. There is fun to be had in candid confession. Perhaps most unique to this work are the human vignettes, where we get into the lives of husbands, wives and friends, as they confront the diet challenge and learn how to reap the benefits of smart cheating.

This is a diet book for the thinking person who doesn't want to obsess over calories, nor suffer the sin of giving in to temptation. In appealing to our ability to conquer weight loss through the use of our own psychological tools, Widroe has turned an old axiom on its head: Cheaters can prosper--but only by being honest with themselves.

I read this book because someone was giving it away at work. I had heard about it but thought it might be some more diet advise. This woman is now one of the most respected people in my life. I applaude Susan Powter for her accomplishments and for speaking out to the public. Now people can really see what our trusted diet and fitness industries are really doing. Memorize the script, sell as much as you can the first visit, cause you can bet they won't be back. I too had a prince in my life at one time. Not so much the cheater but the food watcher. He watched everything I ate. A half of a hamburger was enough. Now that sweet revenge is in the open and those princes of the world can find another option. Thank you Susan for your honesty and commitment to getting the truth out.

I found this book motivated me to get out and do something more physically active. The premise is that anything is better than nothing and any little activity will get you moving and eventually onto bigger and better activities. I like to dance with my son, chase my son to get him dressed and changed, and play with my dogs. It's a start.

This is a very good book for those who are just starting on a fitness program, mainly because the enthusiasm displayed by the author is inspiring. What impressed me the most was instead of dictating a specific type of excersise (weights, running, etc...) Boyd recomends that an individual should develop their fitness program around activities they enjoy, and he emphasizes his point strongly. I myself have learned from experience that if you don't like a particular form of excersise you won't stick to it. When I was in college I hated lifting weights but I would play racquetball till I dropped. Guess what I did more often? I strongly recomend this book to the beginning fitness enthusiast.

Great inspiration for fitness

As long as I know I can still have cookies and such but in moderation, then I can work easier towards obtaining a fitness lifestyle that will work for me. Loved the cover!

Lifestyle Changes for Long-Term Success

Review Date: 2006-12-03

"I realized that to lose weight and be the thin and healthy person I wanted to be, I would have to make a lifelong change. It finally forced me to look at my `issues.' In order to become the healthy, slimmer person I desired, I would need to `renew' my life." ~Ann King

"These Hips Are Mine" is a book by an author who spent many years looking for lifestyle changes that would assist her in her weight loss goals. She didn't want to live by strict restrictions on what she couldn't eat; instead she wanted to know what she "could" do to maintain overall health. Through her research she learned how to shift her thoughts from "losing weight" to "I want to eat and be healthy."

Some of the topics include:

Identifying the Need to Change
Goals
Visual Tools
Choices and Responses
Handling Negativity
Nutrition
Exercise
Journaling
Chocolate
Emotional Eating
Stocking Your Kitchen
Eating on the Go
Positive Self-Talk
The Five Stages of Success
You Deserve Success

Ann King, who adores chocolate caramels, writes beautifully and explores the topic of weight loss with great sensitivity and insight. She explains how you can easily create an environment for weight-lose success. Things as simple as putting out a fruit bowl and removing food temptations go a long way to encouraging success. She explains how to read food labels and identify saturated and unsaturated fats. She also explores "food myths" and explains how you can identify nutrients you are missing by the foods you are craving.

"These Hips are Mine" is an inspiring book that will encourage you to move towards your goals with a renewed sense of optimism.

It's not just another "Lose weight - Eat healthy" book. The fresh mental approach offered in this book also helped me in other areas that I feel needed improvement. It has also become my "Lose debt - Spend healthy" guide that I refer back to if I feel I'm "losing control". It has helped me gain a new, healthy perspective in many aspects of my life.

Pretty darn insightful. Worth every penny and minute.

My wife read this and left it on the bedside table. I picked it up late one night in a desperate attempt for an insomnia cure. I got hooked a few pages into it. It's not your typical fad or jargon filled weight-loss book. As an engineer myself, I found her steady, long-term, practical and realistic approach very appealing. You might have to muscle through (or skip) some of the detailed technical or "journaling" stuff, but you can easily get back to the meat of the book. Weight loss with her approach won't happen quick, but it will probably stay off forever. Reading further, I discovered that the book was really about getting what you want out of life. It's about succeeding. It's about being happy. It's about the journey. It's comforting yet requires that you take responsibility and control. Even if you don't need to lose weight, it's worth a read.

These Hips are Mine: A Weight-Loss Companion Guide is both a personal testimony and a how-to guide to improved overall eating habits and health. When author Ann King became frustrated at the ineffectiveness of diets and diet plans, she chose to abandon calorie counting in favor of positive lifestyle changes - fruit became easily accessible as a snack, junk foods were removed, and the family kitchen was closed at night. Once the author's mental focus shifted to eating healthy and making lifestyle changes rather than just losing weight, her physical and mental well-being both improved. Her story is a life-affirming testimony to conquering both internal and external demons in the search for better health. Chapters address the steps needed to promote a positive lifestyle change, basic knowledge such as how to read food labels and recognize different types of fat, factors that can limit one's efforts at weight loss and self-improvement, survival techniques for taking control of one's food intake at home or when eating out, the five stages of success and how to ensure that success is lasting rather than the first step of a yo-yo, and much more. A positive and practical-minded guide with a keen focus on overall health rather than simply fewer pounds.

It's obvious that Ann King spent a number of years researching this very workable weight loss program. She recommends more of a self analysis to determine why and when we eat. A very necessary step to a successful program.
She also reviews basic nutritional information to give the reader a healthy start to a new beginning.
Follow her five critical steps to change and you will undoubtedly see results - results that will last a lifetime.

An anthropologist once told me that certain human beings are touched by the hand of God. Lucia Capodilupo is one of these creative, insightful, and profound authors. This book is not "yet another" trendy solution to excessive weight gain. Bypassing the quick fix, Lucia focuses on the trials of the human soul. Her writing is clear and her suggestions full of wisdom and promise.

This is a wonderful book! In "Thin Through The Power Of Spirit" Lucia Capodilupo shares her ideas of how to "Create Paradise in Your Weight and World". Instead of focusing on fat grams and calories etc. Lucia suggests we look to the Spirit within us all to find permanent weight loss. "The first step to permanent weight loss begins in the soul" according to Lucia. Lucia gives you mental exercises to do to become more aware of your spirituality. By doing so Lucia believes you can accomplish the type of body weight that is right for you. Exercises include learning to practise self forgiveness, to treat your body with love, to learn the art of gratitude etc. The techniques she shares are powerful and life changing. She also shares wonderful techniques to help resist temptation. I think the book is a wonderful guide to developing greater spirituality and creating the healthy life we desire.

Lucia Capodilupo's book is the answer for all who want to reach and maintain normal weight, whether the unwanted weight gain is minor or serious. In it she captures the essence of permanent weight loss through spiritual change. Her clear writing and powerful techniques for making peace with the physical world, understanding the meaning and function of excess weight, and accessing "perfect" form (which already exists) resonate as Universal truths in the reader.

Capodilupo, who earned a Ph.D. in Russian literature at Yale, teaches us how to define our purpose and commit to making our body, life, and environment works of art. The reader gains a new sense of self-worth and well-being -- expressed by the body through perfect weight!

An effective, in-depth, practical, accessible plan.

Thin Through The Power Of Spirit: Creating Paradise In Your Weight & World makes the startling disclosure that excessive overweight is a spiritual problem, the root cause of which lies in the mind. the seriously overweight person is subconsciously unhappy with, and warring against, their own physical incarnation. With this perception that the "soul" or self is caught in the fleshy prison of the body, the compulsion to overeat takes over -- a symbolic acting-out of this imprisonment. The cure for excess weight lies in remembering that in the flesh, one is not meant to suffer. Permanent weight loss is possible when body reverence replaces body hatred , and weight-loss efforts are then seen as part of a larger commitment to creating Paradise on Earth. Thin Through The Power Of Spirit shows readers how to change their world view, psychology, body image, and food choices so that they can move out of the prison of excess weight and into conditions of normal weight and increased freedom. Author Lucia Capodilupo offers an effective in-depth plan that can, quite literally, change the reader's weight and life forever. Highly recommended.

This is a very fine book, well thought through and well written. The author has looked far more deeply and clearly than any other I have read into the emotional and spiritual issues involved with excess weight and losing that weight. More than that, the wisdom presented in this book could be useful for working with any personal issue or simply for personal development. Let us hear more from this author, soon. Strongly recommended for those of us who wish to truly break the superficial approach of quick fixes and really transform our lives.

This book is much more than just a list of carb counts. First, it teaches what carbs are, including the often confusing sugar alcohols. Then it gives you a choice of carb counting methods, from very basic to very technical. It teaches how to use each method, read labels, and estimate when necessary. There are food lists for each method and quizzes to make sure you're understanding the info. Of course, there is also a list of total carbs and fiber in 2500 different foods. I have been counting carbs for 4 years, but found new (to me) info in this book.

This book has it all. It provides detailed information on WHY people are overweight. It provides a laboratory test to find out how to customize the proper protein, carbohydrate and fat ratios. It provides fabulous recipes that really work. And it's humorous. Most importantly, it provides deeper insights into nutrition that no other book has touched--insights that really make a difference in health. I've read other books by Dr. Tips and they all have been jam packed with valuable information. This book is undoubtedly his best work to date. He shares a nutritional clarity that is the result of experience and deep insights. In my opinion, everyone will enjoy reading this regardless of their weight situation. Finally, I'll say that this program really works. It's the easiest one I've ever done and the results stay with you. I know you'll like this book, too!

In the age of chronic dieting, increasing obesity, and an epidemic of eating disorders, Ellyn Satter's approach to feeding children makes sense! As a former dieter myself, I know dieting does not work, so to impose a "diet" or restricted form of eating on my children doesn't make sense. Ellyn Satter explains in a common sense and non-judgemental way how to stop "restricted feeding" behaviors and allow children to regulate their food intake. Parents are responsible for providing a variety of food, (including food that some people may feel is off-limits, such as chips and cookies)and children are responsible for deciding what and how much to eat. Satter also strongly emphasizes the importance of family meals. It was a tremendous relief to me to hear that I don't have to control the amount that my children eat - that they can be trusted to regulate their own food intake and to grow in a way that nature intended for them. Satter emphasizes that it is OKAY not to be "skinny" and that some children are just larger than others - and it's normal and healthy for them. Satter has a common sense and loving approach for parents of children who are actually at an unhealthy weight to help them get back on track. I wish I had read this book when my children were infants - I would very highly recommend it for any parents who have weight or food issues of their own - read this book before you pass on those issues to your children. I thought I was "over" my own issues and still managed to pass them on! This book should be required reading for parents who are "dieters."

I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!! My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

Revolutionary, though repetitive

I love Ellyn Satter's healthy attitude toward food and eating. But I did get a bit tired of seeing the magic words "Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility" on page after page. Still, Satter's ideas are revolutionary enough that maybe she needs to repeat them frequently to get them across. Her basic idea? You are responsible for presenting your child with nutritious food at regular meal and snack times. You are not responsible for how much your child weighs, you are not responsible for how much (or how little) your child eats, and you shouldn't even try to prevent your child from ever eating "junk" food. Just as important as Satter's theory of how to feed a family is her critique of our "fat-phobic" culture. And she's not just making it up as she goes along--she cites the research to support her theories. This is an important book.

How much damage did my parents do to me by making me "clean my plate" because "there were children starving in Africa!" Urgh. After 20 years with a weight problem, I'm finally getting it under control (with the help of WW) A few months ago - I realized that dd was heading towards obesity herself - and I was helping her ! After reading this book, incorporating some of the suggestions, she lost 10 lbs over the past 3 months, without even trying. Definately urge an overweight parent to read it before putting a child on "a diet" or otherwise limiting food. So glad I did before I made the same mistakes with my other 3 children!

I am thankful that we found this book early enough in my daughter's childhood that we can implement the suggestions and really make a difference in her life. I have struggled with obesity my entire life, and my daughter appears to have inherited my genetic makeup. I learned from this book that many of the things my husband and I were doing WERE harming her and setting her up for full-blown obesity in the future. This book has helped us develop a more relaxed environment around eating, and we now have sit-down family meals for every meal we have at home. That is a key component of the whole philosophy, and even though we knew that was important in the same way that everyone does, we didn't make it a priority until after reading this book.

Some people go through life never realizing their potential, nor the impact they may have on others. This author has yet, once again displayed his chosen gift for reaching out, embracing and healing us from the inside out. I read this book from cover to cover and felt his sincerity as well as his passion for life with the turn of every page. The "somewhat" humorous approach he takes within his writings give you the incentive to keep reading, even if it's only to see what he will say next. This book is filled with simplicity, encouragement and wisdom. Things in which we all need to become better parents and families. If this author lives his life by the standards he speaks of in this book they are a VERY lucky family!!!!
Thank you Dr. John, for not only being inspirational but for your devotion and persistence to the well being of "our children."
You are wonderfully talented! Thank you again Dr John........

I received this book this January and started using it with my family. We are an extremely busy family with no time. Dr. Mayer's approach is sooooo easy and doable even for my busy family. And most of all he helps us think differently about FOOD and THE WAY WE EAT. YES, he may say things we already know, but it is good to hear from a professional and expert how and why we should do things. The extra little tips and suggestions he gives that you may not think about are great. Many of the things you can get from this book are very subtle changes, but I have found that these are the best and most lasting when you don't even realize you are being helped or changed. My family and family life has changed emensely. Thank you Dr. Mayer.

I am not sure why this book is not on the top seller list, because it is nothing short of amazing! I found this book in a pile of books that was donated to a book drive. I picked it up and thumbed through it. A few things caught my eye, so I sat down and started to read.
As I read, a woman and her three children rushed in, and seeing me with the book, came directly over. She explained that the book was dropped off by mistake, and she wanted it back. And, from what I read, I could see why. I went out and bought a copy for myself. After reading it, I bought copies for several people that I cared about.
I now know several families that have had success loosing weight and keeping it off! Not only did these families make fantastic progress in terms of weight loss, but they also encountered several unexpected surprises. Many delightful changes took place in their personal lives and the overall structure of their families.
This book is written to change the way families treat each other. And, also how each family deals with life and the surrounding world. The bottom line here is that, a healthy family is not a FAT family. It is not the FAT that makes the family unhealthy, but the ways in which they communicate, interact, and respect each other and others!
This book contains a wealth of sound advice on parenting, spousal relationships, single parenting, communication, problem solving, stress management, fun healthy food choices, resolving problems effectively, and so much more. It is well researched and nicely written. It has the power to change lives!
This book reaches down the throat and pulls out the stomach of the eating problem. After experiencing the power of this book, I highly recommend it to and family, or even single person who is still in contact with their family, who is dealing with a weight issue. You won't be sorry you picked it up. As they say, the proof is in the pudding-, which you won't want to eat after reading this book!
